@GonzaloMedina It's a weird problem now, that's for sure.

@AlanMunn Weird indeed. Even without the font size change, the qtree package behaves in strange ways with the tlp class.
And tikz-qtree wins!

Q: Good template for DIN A1 poster in portrait format

joachimI'm looking for a good and easy-to-use DIN A1 poster template in portrait format for a scientific poster flash.

@lockstep done!

@lockstep Voted too. :)

@GonzaloMedina Right. The problem is that the class evilly redefines tabular. I've posted a fix as well, but the tikz-qtree solution is certainly preferable.

Hi =)

@N3buchadnezzar Now what joke am I supposed to make with that entrance?

12:43 AM
@AlanMunn Now my answer is completely useless; that should teach me not to meddle in the affairs of linguists and their trees ;-)

Oglibogelido, here I am
@AlanMunn Was that a better entrance?

@GonzaloMedina Sure, but given the first question, your solution was entirely appropriate.
@N3buchadnezzar That's so obscure, even Google doesn't know what to do with it.

Hi, can I come in?
@AlanMunn how about mine?

@percusse Google does well with that: motifake.com/57003

@AlanMunn Ahah, my girlfriend asked me if I am in the strange part of the internet again.

12:58 AM
@percusse is that her name for TeX.SX?

@GonzaloMedina She tends to ignore my virtual relation with here. She was kind of impressed at first then the usual Meh! mode was on.
Unfortunately she saw me figuring the Batman thingy and there is no hope ever again. I said it was a college logo, you know... the modern ones. But she went out shopping. :)

1:19 AM
@percusse: I know Star Trek well, but don't get the reference at tex.stackexchange.com/questions/48435/…

@PeterGrill the page was empty and only he had his question and answer. Hence my comment. I guess he's using naval jargon :)

@percusse Ok, feel better now that I know it is not a Star Trek reference -- thought I was going senile there for a moment. :-) Oh, BTW, I am still going thru the Pink Floyd videos (but only listening as it is in a background window)... Have quite a few still to go...

@PeterGrill That's the prime example of a Floyd addiction... Then you would buy the Pulse DVD and why not get some vinyls maybe some limited edition stuff .....

I pretty much have almost all their CDs, and have them in my iPod, but just haven't listened to in a while. Been addicted for many years already...

@PeterGrill Try also these :)
I just came back from a Mike Stern concert so excuse my bias...

1:29 AM
@percusse Sounds good so far. Have Floyd paused for now... Thanks for the recommendation, this is new to me.

@PeterGrill No problem, Gary Novak is actually my drum idol.

1:42 AM
and yet another one with different personnel :)

@percusse I am back on Floyd. Hard to compete with to David Gilmour.

@PeterGrill I didn't think otherwise :)

Have answered the latter.

@YiannisLazarides It's actually a double post by the same OP. I closed the first one.
There's a slight difference in meaning, I think, but that's not much, not enough to keep the questions separate.

@Stefan Thanks! I answered the first 4-5 top unanswered over the last week or so and this came up.

12:04 PM
@YiannisLazarides Sometimes, when I need a nice distraction, I check unanswered questions here, there are more than 1000 unanswered :-O latex-community.org/forum/search.php?search_id=unanswered

Rep: 33533 Another palindrome.

@StefanKottwitz A lot of the unanswered here are destined for the close button though. The good thing answering them is you get to inch your knowledge a bit as inevitably the answer needs a bit of research.

Q: Two-Column Line Numbers on Either Side

Micah DombrowskiI'm looking for a way, in a two-column format, to put line numbers on the left side of the left column and the right side of the right column. This was asked before, but the asker accepted an alternative. I need to use a fixed style/pagination (agutex), so I don't know that the alternative work...

Hi! :)
Im watching the women's curling competition. I have absolutely no idea of what's going on. :P

@PauloCereda Did you arrive in time for the Mass?
@PauloCereda They have to put stones as near as possible to the mark. It's very easy. :)

@egreg Ah yes, I live very close to the church. :) They were all waiting for me. :)
@egreg Ah got it. :) I was watching Italy and Sweden, it's a very interesting game. :)

@egreg Bocce on ice.

@AlanMunn aaaaaaaaaaaah!
Best description ever. :P

Would curling be even more interesting if they used something else than stones?

2:01 PM
@AlanMunn Do you know "bocce"? Interesting!

@N3buchadnezzar Like mines. :)
@egreg I was going to mention bocce too, but I was afraid of being too much regional. :)

Does anybody remember a discussion or post in meta about the quality of an answer, especially that code-only answers or one-liners would be bad? I know: meta.tex.stackexchange.com/questions/227/… and meta.tex.stackexchange.com/questions/1700/…

@N3buchadnezzar What do you have in mind? Flaming bowls of gasoline?

@AlanMunn I was thinking about dwarves dressed as clowns, instead of stones.
Or something that would make the female contestants inhale large amounts of alcohol and have a wet t-shirt contest.

It reminds me of blernsball: theinfosphere.org/Blernsball :)

Just uploaded a new package, usebib. :) biblatex impaired people can say \bibinput{bibfile} in the preamble and print some data (the title of a work, for instance), just like \citetitle can do with biblatex.

@egreg Amazing! :)

@PauloCereda This sport here is amazing
I could not find it in english, I am sorry.

@egreg Toronto, where I grew up has (had?) the second largest Italian immigrant population outside of NYC. Some names from my high school class: Cenedese, Condotta, Colantonio, Gambino, Fabiani, Gualtieri, Guidoni, Scalise, Brofoglio, Stradiotto etc.

@N3buchadnezzar Cool! :) I see an epic goat. :P

@PauloCereda It had been sitting there for some months and I promised that I'd publish it as a package if at least two people asked for it. Yesterday the second one appeared. :)

2:22 PM
@PauloCereda Later in the episode Donald and Daisy also gets a chance to play ;)

@AlanMunn A friend of mine was born in Montréal, but returned to Italy when he was 14. He's from Carnia (a valley near Udine) and I remember very well the epic party for his graduation: we ate for some hours. And drank accordingly to the local habits, of course. He used to say that his village had 3000 inhabitants and 14 pubs. :)

@egreg: Milito lost a penalty, yay! :)

@StefanKottwitz I've flagged a question; please, take a look.

Q: Throw an error message

UiyHow can one throw an error message in latex/tex or lualatex? I am doing some lualatex computation and want to abort the program if the computation fails(say a divide by zero) and print a pretty message.

2:39 PM
@AlanMunn Voted. :)

@egreg: Nice announcement: The usebib package is a poor person's replacement *for the more powerful methods provided by biblatex to access data from a .bib file *

@egreg I edited the question and commented.

tex.stackexchange.com/questions/48493/… support needed to promote civilization;)

@YiannisLazarides I removed bad language from that question and changed the title

@StefanKottwitz ... You spoiled my pre-dinner fun:)

2:52 PM
@YiannisLazarides because @egreg was faster pointing to that question ;-)

@StefanKottwitz ... he will have to buy us some dinner and Italian wine one day:)

@YiannisLazarides When you come to Italy …

@egreg Maybe next year, is on the cards ... Corfu and then to Italy by boat.

Q: How to count all characters including spaces?

BobHow can I count the number of characters in the compiled version of a Latex file? This should include spaces and all of the document (index, footnotes, bibliography etc)

pdftotex | wc? :P

@YiannisLazarides It's quite a travel from Brindisi to Padova. :) Let me know!
@PauloCereda pdftotext file.pdf - | wc -c But I don't think the count is really correct

3:02 PM
@egreg :)
@egreg We could write a package using Lua and print to te log file the number the count of all characters. :)

@egreg ... it is, never been to Italy and would love to visit.
@PauloCereda Hack the microtype package to increment a counter for every letter:)

@YiannisLazarides Oh! :P

@percusse @lockstep Sorry for flooding the frontpage :-/ However, I don't like to see questions without images because the image hoster has an expiry date for pictures... Anyway, I'm approaching the end of the list^^

@diabonas Don't worry -- re-uploading "lost" images is one of the better reasons for bumping. :-)

@lockstep it would be cool to get a warning about non-imgur pictures directly when a question/answer is posted - I try to check that when reviewing, but I forget most of the time...

Did anybody encounter a presentation with an index until now?

Q: beamer with \index creates empty lines in the index

sigbertI try to build an index in two columns at the end of my slides. To do so, I use the definitions from http://www.latex-community.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=11993 . @all This tex.stackexchange.com/questions/37320/… needs a round of applause and upvotes if you haven't done so.

@YiannisLazarides At your service ... upvoted.
@YiannisLazarides BTW, congrats for being "Epic"!

5:59 PM
@lockstep Got me by surprise:)

@YiannisLazarides Don't be overmodest. ;-)

@lockstep I am quite impressed with the tikz-cd package and it got buried. Also the author is a newcomer and I tought he deserved better.
@lockstep Missed a great one the other day tex.stackexchange.com/questions/48295/…

@YiannisLazarides No, I upvoted your answer, if only for the "talking about patience" part. :-)

@lockstep I actually wrote the whole thing, just to add that part:)

@YiannisLazarides Let's see if it earns you a "Reversal".

6:06 PM
@lockstep In South Africa I would have used the word voetsak. Only guy with a reversal so far is Alan.
@lockstep How is your retagging going? I see things are more organized now.

@YiannisLazarides I managed to get the "Populist" badges, which is nearly as hard.

@lockstep What is that badge?

@YiannisLazarides Roughly speaking, you need to outscore an accepted answer with score >10 by a factor 2.

Q: Replace `et al.` with `\& al.`

Konrad RudolphI’m a big fan of ampersands (possibly too much …) and I’d like to replace all mentions of “et al.” (included in citations) by \& al. – both in the main text (I use natbib citations of the form [Author1 et al., 1999]), and in the actual bibliography? How can I do that, considering that BibTeX...

@lockstep That is really tough, I will check it out.

@YiannisLazarides Speaking of retagging, I'm rather happy with the current state of affairs. The main exception is the tag, which could profit from a set of supplemental tags (though I don't know what they should be called).
And now a "Good Answer" badge got me by surprise.

6:13 PM
@lockstep Biblatex is great and you seem to know it inside out:) It deserved it:)

@YiannisLazarides I'm sure Audrey will surpass me eventually.

@lockstep tagging tikz-pgf, I thout one could start from pgf-plots and add subtags.

@YiannisLazarides First, I'd like to see the tikz-pgf experts agree on possible subtags. ( is an existing one, but more are needed IMO.)

@lockstep Reason I always look these up. I don't use tikz too much and when I do is mostly plotting. Some of the themes from physics are very esoteric would be difficult to tag unless one has application-physics, application-cs etc.

@YiannisLazarides Science discipline (sub)tags didn't fare too well at tex.sx until now. Maybe could become an exception to this rule.

6:27 PM
@lockstep Yes the science sub(tags) so far wouldn't but as you say maybe a few would be appropriate now. Let us bounce this on Jake and the other TikZ guys, maybe on meta.

6:57 PM
@lockstep It must be somebody who thinks that slides are a useful substitute for lecture notes.

@YiannisLazarides The tagging on texample.net/tikz/examples could serve as an inspiration. Also that tagging is open for suggestions.

@percusse Note the nose ring tex.stackexchange.com/a/48479/963 :)
@StefanKottwitz You right never thought of it, and I have used it quite a few times. It is quite good.

@azetina I've had a request from an "azetinasjc" to join the TeX-SX package team and I presume that it's you. What would you like to do to contribute to the code? You can check out the source and hack away at it without being a member of the project - that just gives you the ability to commit to the trunk. Were there any particular answers you'd like to convert into packages?

@AndrewStacey: the new script version simply warns about \citation{*}, but does the check anyway. :) Thanks a lot for the suggestion. :)

@YiannisLazarides @lockstep There are some subtags already. One could consider [pgfplots] a "subtag" of [tikz-pgf]. There are certain natural sub-divisions like that: extra packages built on top of TikZ/PGF. Another would be Altermundus' TKZ.
@PauloCereda Who-hoo. I made a suggestion and it got implemented! (I remember the rush when I first emailed a developer and he implemented my suggestion)

7:12 PM
@AndrewStacey Maybe one of you can produce a proposal for the tags in a TikZ tree:)

Other possible sub-tags: decorations, path manipulation, wholistic drawing (things along the line of "Draw this for me" but a bit politer).

@AndrewStacey At first, I thought about introducing a flag named --ignore-asterisk, but then egreg suggested me to simply warn the user about \citation{*}. After all, the user should know that when running the script. :)

Q: Sub tags for TikZ/PGF

Andrew StaceyThere are 1670 questions in the tikz-pgf tag at time of writing. There was a suggestion in chat (and thereabouts) to have some subtags. This "question" is to gather together some ideas. Two major threads suggest themselves to me: TikZ/PGF derived packages There are several packages (or colle...

@YiannisLazarides, @lockstep I took the liberty

Hello everyone!
A simple question: how can I manually typeset a table of contents?

@MarcoDaniel You need to squeeze the environmnt within the \boxit in the lua function. I will try it out tomorrow and see if I can get a fix, it is getting late here.

I need to translate a table of contents, which means it wouldn't be generated from a document, but it must look the same
The main problem is the dots between page numbers and titles
and also the indentations

@AndrewStacey Great idea! Let us get the ball rolling and keep lockstep busy with re-tagging:)

Is there maybe a file somewhere that includes the generated contents, so I could translate everything?
Like BBL files. The AUX doesn't really have it.
I found the .toc file, but I am not sure how to make use of its contents.

Q: LPeg alternative match?

UiyLooking over the LPeg docs I do not see a way to have alternatives(OR) http://www.inf.puc-rio.br/~roberto/lpeg e.g., a | b will match a or b. Am I missing something?

IMO off topic:
This should be on stackoverflow.com

@PatrickGundlach Agreed. :)

@PatrickGundlach Yes.

@PatrickGundlach Indeed. One more vote to close.

@Szabolcs Copy file.toc into file-toc.tex, translate the words, leaving commands such as \l@chapter and \l@section and \numberline where they are. Then input it by \makeatletter\input{file-toc}\makeatother

8:33 PM
Only three @egreg days to go for 10k rep ;-)
(9400 now)

@YiannisLazarides Superb! There was a similar one with the "Girl With An Earring" but couldn't find it. I'll let you know when I find it. :)
@lockstep Should I vote for closing or should I wait for a mod to migrate it?
The reason for asking is because I don't want to offend him given that he was a little bit sensitive previously to the matter.

@PatrickGundlach I'm under average, today, in view of the plan to reach 75000 with the Yearling badge. :)

@percusse Migration is for better-than-average questions. I'd say vote to close.

@PatrickGundlach But 300 days are not so frequent. :)

A friend of mine said, "This songsheet looks nice! How did you do that in Word?" I replied, "It's LaTeX, not Word." "But LaTeX isn't a Pokémon creature?". Then I facepalmed. :(

@PauloCereda It's not listed here. :)
This is a list of characters in the Pokémon games, animated TV series, and manga series. Save for notable specific Pokémon, the specific species of Pokémon are not listed here; they are instead detailed further at List of Pokémon. Note that this list includes characters from all of the various incarnations of the Pokémon franchise. This includes characters from a number of discrete, similar-but-separate continuities, including the video game continuity, the anime continuity, the Pokémon Adventures continuity, the Electric Tale of Pikachu manga continuity, and the Magical Pokémon Journey m...

@egreg Oh my, should we edit the wiki? :P
If I open the main site and read a question named "How do I draw a Pikachu in TikZ?", I'll run for the hills. :)

@PauloCereda A good idea for my first question!

11:48 PM
@egreg Oh my! :D

@PauloCereda Did you write it now?

@egreg With a big help of Inkscape. :)

@PauloCereda Can it output Metapost?

@egreg I don't think so, but let me check. :)
