4:58 AM
@Moriambar Approved!
@Moriambar You read my mind!

1 hour later…
6:09 AM
Can somebody have a look at this github issue. My system is outdated.

@CarLaTeX Thanks!

@Moriambar :)

6:40 AM
@CarLaTeX You are back to work, or still on vacation?

@Moriambar Back to work :(

@CarLaTeX Ohh I see.. I went to the book exhibition on sunday. It was awesome, and found some contacts to probably turn my career around

@Moriambar I'm happy of that! :):):):)

@CarLaTeX yes it's nothing written but even if it goes into nithing, at least it's a step forward

@Moriambar Let's hope it'll go forward!

6:50 AM
@CarLaTeX We'll see, thanks. I'm trying not to get my hopes up. It's a long and difficult road, and has no guarantees, but my job stresses me too much and my hates towards it it's reaching unbearable levels

@Moriambar I know, I gave up for the same reason...

@CarLaTeX my problems are: I'm too old, I have virtually no experience (only amateurish experience), and I have to make a good income out of it, in order to pay for the house (the payments are bound to start, sooner or later).

@Moriambar Money is the problem... Unfortunately, you have to do a job you don't like if you have to pay back a loan!

@CarLaTeX yes, and being alone complicates it too since I have to have an income that can afford to pay that back and still have enough to pay the bills
@CarLaTeX otherwise I can screw the bank and live in my car :)

@Moriambar I'm alone, too, and I have to help my mother with the "pensione minima"... Think that some colleagues of mine spend 2.000 euros for a bag! If I had 2.000 euros to spend in bags I wouldn't go to work even under torture!

7:00 AM
@CarLaTeX I understand. Well sometimes one spends more than he could afford

@Moriambar It's not the case of my colleagues, I assure you!

@CarLaTeX Well lucky for them. To be honest I spend quite a lot too... but 2000€ well... maybe over many months I do. The loan payments should start in a year or so, hence I will spend less and less :)

@Moriambar I spend only for vacations :):):)

@CarLaTeX no, I spend a lot for books regarding things I like. Being it LaTeX, typography, electronics and tinkering, linguistics, etc... I seldom go on vacation

7:18 AM
@Moriambar I spend a lot for books, too, but till now only for university (even if I bought the e-book version of "The LaTeX Companion" and a couple of Stefan Kottwitz's books, I've almost finished reading the one for beginners, then I'll read the more advanced ones)

@CarLaTeX well for LaTeX, I bought the companion pack some years ago, and the "computers and typesetting" set. I actually wouldn't know which other LaTeX books I should buy. But when it comes to typesetting and typography... I spent quite a lot there. Those books are quite expensive
@CarLaTeX do you have any suggestions (about LaTeX books)?

@Moriambar I'm not an expert! :):):):) Have you read Prof. Knuth's book?

@CarLaTeX which one? The TeX Book I read 1.75 times

@Moriambar That one! I don't talk with you of "The Art of Computer Programming" since you don't like computer programming :):):):)

@CarLaTeX I nevertheless want to buy that one too. I had a long discussion about it with @barbarabeeton and @DavidCarlisle (regarding its status and completion rate). @barbarabeeton convinced me not to wait too much to buy it. I think I will next year when a colleague of mine will be in the states (thus saving on the shipping rates)

7:30 AM
@Moriambar Good!

@CarLaTeX Anyway I wish there were a book like the TeX Book on LaTeX. Well I wish all books were like that. Of DEK I also read "surreal numbers" (since I also kind of studied that kind of game theory, and have J.H. Conway's books on the matter) and I found it really superb

@Moriambar Knuth is a genius!

@CarLaTeX I have to say that J.H. Conway is too

@Moriambar I don't know him, I have to remedy!

@CarLaTeX he's an hardcore mathematician, so if you're not into mathematics or combinatorial game theory, well I don't know if it's for you.

7:38 AM
@Moriambar I know a bit of game theory but, obviously, not at that level! I have something to learn when I'll retire!

@CarLaTeX I think that the game theory you know is the other kind (non-combinatorial). It's completely different
@CarLaTeX nevertheless I advise you to do it now: I find myself too old and not that receptive anymore, and I really am not able to learn much math/physics/science anymore

@Moriambar Unfortunately, I have no time now, I have a thesis to finish! :):):):)

@CarLaTeX well that's nice... I never managed to complete my second degree!

@Moriambar It's not because you're old, it's because you're stressed!

@CarLaTeX nah, even when relaxed I find myself unable to understand concepts that once I got at first glance. The mind decays too, you know? There are only few lucky people who can keep on on such things. I tried but failed. So I turned towards less scientific matters and am comfortable with those for the moment. I simply cannot get math any longer

7:48 AM
@Moriambar I love math! I'm obliged to read bank regulation documents, I assure they don't remain in my mind!

@CarLaTeX I love math too. Simply I cannot understand new concepts and information about math topic as I used to. I find really hard at times, while once it was really easy or, at least, not as difficult as it is now

@Moriambar I think you only need more time... If you are living a stressing period your mental activity is affected by this...

@CarLaTeX Well, it's been at least three years since I found those difficulties. In the beginning it was minor and I was inclined to think exactly as you did. Slowly it became worse and worse, so I think it's kind of a "degenerative process"

@Moriambar I don't think so, let's see when you'll find a new job!

@CarLaTeX if, not when. :)

7:56 AM
@Moriambar Don't be pessimist!

@CarLaTeX realistic, not pessimistic

8:12 AM
If a person votes to close with a custom close text, and the four next closers use the same reason, should not that custom text be displayed in the yellow-ish banner in the post, that says the post has been closed? Because it appears that the default "not in the scope" text is used instead, with the custom text only shown in a comment below. (@JosephWright, do you know?)

@TorbjørnT. Sounds odd I agree
@TorbjørnT. Link?

@JosephWright tex.stackexchange.com/questions/366810 I was thinking about asking on Meta, but thought I'd ask here first, in case I had missed something obvious.

@TorbjørnT. I think that the yellow box can only have the 'pre-defined' text

@JosephWright OK. I thought I had seen the custom text in those earlier, but perhaps I'm remembering wrongly.

8:32 AM
@TorbjørnT. However, I agree with you: it's misleading!

@DavidCarlisle @egreg A template error boiled down to an MWE. I don't know why the maintainer wants to set the width, but it is failing. Only in this combination.
\documentclass{scrreprt}%
\usepackage{pdfpages}
\usepackage{xkeyval}
\renewcommand{\sectionmark}[1]{%

        \settowidth{\parindent}{Wombat}

\end{document}

@Johannes_B you really love templates, don't you?

@Johannes_B don't do that

@Moriambar No. :-/

@JosephWright which helpfully probably makes it go from being an error to silently doing something nonsensical:-)

8:37 AM
@DavidCarlisle \protected ;)

@Johannes_B you always talk about them. You must love them

@Johannes_B actually I'm struggling to guess what is the intended meaning of setting a length in a \mark

@Johannes_B A collection of dirty tricks called cleanthesis
3

@Johannes_B I don't follow links from untrusted sources

8:41 AM
@DavidCarlisle Don't you trust me or github? :-)

@Johannes_B lots of my code is on github, so clearly I trust that:-)

@egreg Doesn't matter if you prefi it with clean or classic (or even MD), it stays a mess.
@DavidCarlisle :-)

@Johannes_B what the world needs is an ABNT thesis class
@PauloCereda ^

@DavidCarlisle There is! That's why @PauloCereda is so slow.

@egreg oops

8:43 AM
@DavidCarlisle We need lots of thesis classes.
3

@egreg is it being used by you-know-who?
@Johannes_B They are like Pineapple Pizza you pretend to hate them but everyone loves them secretly.

@DavidCarlisle as long as he's to do with pineapple pizza I am really happy

@Moriambar I cooked arroz con pollo yesterday. No pineapples in there. ;-)

@Johannes_B what is "arroz"?

8:51 AM
@Johannes_B quite interesting. I like chicken, and I like rice. It sounds good as long as there's no pepperoni in it :)

@Moriambar I used regular bell peppers.

@Johannes_B sorry I used the wrong word: it's bell peppers that I hate. I find them... yucky

@Moriambar I had a very delicious potato soup on tuesday. No pineapple, no bell peppers. :-)

@Johannes_B but soup!
I can tolerate it but soup is a torture :P

@Moriambar Soup is very good. I like soup.

8:54 AM
@Johannes_B Soup is something I eat at most 2 or three times a year
and only when I'm sick
(that's why I cannot travel abroad, I have difficulties in finding something suitable to eat)

@Moriambar Soup prevents you from getting sick. You should eat more soup ;-) <- True story

@Johannes_B I prefer getting sick.
@Johannes_B Of course it's not like pepperoni or worse: cinnamon or honey
I can tolerate soup but I prefer not to eat it

@Moriambar What about this? it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulasch

@Johannes_B ahah if it wasn't for the beef and the lard, it would be good. I don't like beef too. nor pork meat unless is in some kind of sausage/salami form (lard is an exception)
I have difficult tastes regarding food. Thus I stay in Italy :)

@Moriambar You are very picky :-)

9:02 AM
@Johannes_B I never have problems eating, really. I think it's a cultural thing: abroad red meat and soups are widely used. I simply don't like those (well I told you of sauseges, salami, etc.).
@Johannes_B the problem is that the void created by the absence of "pasta" cannot be filled

@Moriambar If you ever see german pasta sauce with an italian label ... run, run fast.

@Johannes_B your arroz con pollo could be good, without bell peppers :)
@Johannes_B well lucky me I do not travel
@Johannes_B abroad everything with italian label should make you run fast
@Johannes_B there was a film, back in the 80s, where a group of italians went to the US, and in their luggage had 10kg of pasta and 2 or 3 kg of sauce for it... I kinda am like that. But fortunately I really don't travel

9:36 AM
@DavidCarlisle @egreg oh no

4 hours later…
1:23 PM
@PauloCereda: The duck has no name yet.

@ChristianHupfer o.O

@PauloCereda I use the duck and the truck in many occasions in my Mechanics lessons
Looking at the authors name, i question the quality of the template without looking at it. — Johannes_B 2 hours ago
@Johannes_B: Zombie-like authors publishing templates out of hell? ;-)

@ChristianHupfer The same guy did this strange homework assignment template that Vel put on his website.

@Johannes_B I dare not to look there ...

@ChristianHupfer Just wanted to post a link :-(

1:36 PM
@Johannes_B I believe you -- I don't need a link ;-)

Q: How to solve float lost problem in this template

TonyI am using this template, but when I add \begin{figure} in the '\problemAnswer{}' there always has a error "Float(s) lost. \end{document}". Is anyway to fix this bug?

@Johannes_B Yes, why should one use a caption in a Problem or Answer box...

@TorbjørnT. I just noted you reached 100k. Congratulations.

Well this is for once an interesting terminal output from pdflatex:

@UlrikeFischer How did you manage that? :-)

1:50 PM
@Johannes_B With the exsheet question on texwelt.

@UlrikeFischer Have'nt even tried to attack that question yet.

@UlrikeFischer @DavidCarlisle's work?

@UlrikeFischer ooh

@Moriambar No, Clemens' (or some expl3 side effect).

@UlrikeFischer Oh, I see

2:02 PM
hi
I have a question
How can I put two images, one under the other, next to the text?
@ChristianHupfer @Johannes_B @PauloCereda @UlrikeFischer @Moriambar

@Curio Leaving an empty line between the two image file inclusions should place them one above the other one. If you don't want to float the images away, drop the figure environment (if you're using that all)

Do I have to use wrapfigure?

@Curio I have a question too! :)

@ChristianHupfer can you write the code here so I can understand better?

@PauloCereda Is it duck-related? ;-)

2:14 PM
@ChristianHupfer NO! Most certainly not! Well... yes.

@PauloCereda are ducks good with images?

@Moriambar oh we are. :)

@Curio The chat is no place for posting larger portions of code. I am also pretty sure this has been asked multiple times

@PauloCereda us cats... not so much

@PauloCereda I am not surprised ;-)

2:15 PM
@ChristianHupfer you naughty German <3

@PauloCereda The Evil is strong in me ;-)

@ChristianHupfer @UlrikeFischer I know you are probably not following any wikibook stuff. One user got banned for life, he is active on another forum. ^^^^^^^^

@Johannes_B User = You? ;-)

@ChristianHupfer If i ever claim i have done something like said in the screenshot, you can be sure i am nuts.
@ChristianHupfer I guess i would say what is said in the bottom post.

@Johannes_B Yes, that's why I asked if you would be the user :D
@Johannes_B: How can we translate "Vollposten" into English, for example?

2:23 PM
@ChristianHupfer de.wikibooks.org/w/…

@ChristianHupfer I found out a lot, but it didn't go well...

@ChristianHupfer Google tells me: Idiot

@Johannes_B Leo says 'dumbass' ....

@ChristianHupfer I wouldn't call him either. He seems to have some real issues.

@Johannes_B Well, that's not the right place to discuss this. I've never heard of him before and I am not familiar with things he wrote/published

2:28 PM
@ChristianHupfer I'm really not able to do this thing, please help me

@Curio You already posted a question. @DavidCarlisle asked you to provide a compilable document, not just a fragment

The text is too long

I don't find how to add two images one under the other and I don't have much time, please, can you post the code here? I would be grateful
@ChristianHupfer

@Curio He told you to place an empty line between the pictures. That is it. If that doesn't solve your problem, there is something else oing on, unbeknown to us. That is the reason why we asked you to provide a minimal working example.

2:41 PM
I have a text and I want to put two images one behind the other next to the text. What is the code to write it?
@Johannes_B

Q: LaTeX: Put two images next to the text

CurioI have two images and I want put them next to the text, but I don't know how to do this. The images have to be one under the other. \section{Procedimento} \begin{wrapfigure}{H}{5cm} \caption{Il metro teso grazie alla sedia}\label{wrap-fig:2} \includegraphics[width=5cm]{metrofisso2.jpg} \end{wra...

so?
The code is that, if I have to post all the code, I add 300 lines of text, so it isn't useful

@Curio We are going in circles. We need a minimal working example (how to link already posted), you are not willing to post one. You are still asking how to do it, we still don't now what is going on. If you are in such a hurry, you can get paid help that can take over your complete project and fix your figures.

I posted what I have wrote
I don't understand what is the problem
@Johannes_B Well, I wrote this: now \begin{wrapfigure}{r}{0.5\textwidth}
\vspace{-20pt}
\begin{center}
\includegraphics[width=0.48\textwidth]{metrofisso1.jpg}
\includegraphics[width=0.48\textwidth]{metrofisso3.jpg}
\end{center}
\vspace{-20pt}
\caption{A gull}
\vspace{-10pt}
\end{wrapfigure}
And it goes right, however under the image in the next page there is a white space which covers the text
Why is there this white space?!?
Oh yes, I fini
I managed to do this

3:13 PM
@Curio no one can see any white space as no one can run your example

3:25 PM
@Curio I posted an answer on the main site

1 hour later…
yo'
4:32 PM
@Johannes_B you haven't attacked the question, but the question seems to have attacked @UlrikeFischer!

@yo' No, i don't think so. She is very experienced. :-)

@JosephWright Yeah, we have. Still, I understand the cost is pretty tiny compared to our consumables. Cheaper right now as the pound is still pretty weak.
@DavidCarlisle I just realized I've got the only answer to this question. You should probably put in a better one. tex.stackexchange.com/questions/20450/…

I know it's a simple thing for some here, but I just wrote a macro off the top of my head that had two \expandafters and it worked out of the box. Expansion is finally sinking in.

One of the reasons I love forest. <3
@AlanMunn ooh

4:48 PM
@PauloCereda I would load forest with the [linguistics] option to make this look nicer.

@AlanMunn ooh let me see
@AlanMunn I owe you a Canadian beer, kind sir.

@PauloCereda :) linguistics makes everything nicer.

@AlanMunn <3 Is there a way to set this option for just a specific forest drawing?

@PauloCereda Yes, instead of putting it in the package options, I think you use \useforestlibrary{linguistics} (or something like that) and then add for tree=sn edges to an individual tree.

@AlanMunn Thank you!

5:00 PM
Men
An easy question
Why do the images sometimes cover the text and sometimes not?
@PauloCereda @sgmoye @Canageek @AlanMunn @Johannes_B @yo'
@DavidCarlisle

5:29 PM
@Curio This can happen if the images have bad bounding boxes.

5:43 PM
@AlanMunn two?, not one less than a power of two? That's advanced stuff:-)
@Curio there's no need to ping everyone, that is not how chat works!
3

@AlanMunn how much did it take? Just to know whether I'll ever be able to master that

5:59 PM
@DavidCarlisle I usually use one less than a specific power of two…

@AlanMunn Two in a row?

@egreg No!

@AlanMunn Exactly two in a row is quite rare to find. You might enjoy tex.stackexchange.com/a/366127/4427 which has more than two of them (but always single).

@Moriambar I don't think I've ever used more than 31 in a row for any real code
@egreg just been sent a bug report for newunicodechar package by mail, odd looking package, do you know where it came from?
@JosephWright I see we failed to have a test for setglue in the test suite...

6:21 PM
@DavidCarlisle Oh good

@JosephWright (as reported on luatex list) It might be worth having some larger set of lua tests just to try to check the stability of the engine going forwards

@DavidCarlisle I think in an article @egreg talked of a piece of code that to run using expandafter would need something around 1000. I never used a single one

Bugzilla released version 5 public beta! All bug reports must be submitted to... Bugzilla.

6:37 PM
@PauloCereda A self-aware bug buster? ;-)

@Moriambar tex.stackexchange.com/a/181405/1090 (first frame finished)

@ChristianHupfer :)

@DavidCarlisle yup I'm watching it and I hope higgins goes out since I cannot understand him

@Moriambar you don't like the Scottish accent?

@DavidCarlisle apart hating it I really don't understand a single word. It's not like Hendry, which is still understandable. It's completely jibberish
@DavidCarlisle don't tell me you can understand him

6:45 PM
@Moriambar Capisco molte lingue
@Moriambar actually I hadn't noticed his accent was particularly strong:-)

6:59 PM
@DavidCarlisle that is not an accent, it's a full fledged dialect! :)
@DavidCarlisle buon per te, te capiset anca ul milanés?
@DavidCarlisle ah, regarding expandafter, any more that I used become not understandable by me

@Moriambar these local dialects don't confuse me
@Moriambar \expandafter\scottish

@DavidCarlisle if only it were that easy. Aussies I can understand but Higgins… I'm not even close
btw hawkins isn't settld and the game is a bit one sided

@Moriambar How much time did it take? We'll I've been using LaTeX only since 2004. :)

@Moriambar so you'd better practice your Scottish:-)

@Moriambar I agree with @DavidCarlisle. I don't find his accent particularly strong. Of course both my parents were from Glasgow, so that might help... :)

7:07 PM
@AlanMunn well yes I was just checking where's he's from: Wishaw=15 miles from Glasgow....

@Moriambar Just to make you feel better, here's one that even @DavidCarlisle won't be able to understand, I bet. mashable.com/2017/04/10/irish-farmer-strong-accent/…

@AlanMunn Damn, using it from 2000 -.-' epic fail for me
@AlanMunn well when an "i" becomes "a" it's not an accent anymore. I understand Irish guys better.

@Moriambar I've been using it since about 2004 too :)

@JosephWright =)
@JosephWright @AlanMunn but when did you start using it in a more advanced manner?

@AlanMunn yes I could catch the odd phrase but pretty tricky and large sections I couldn't get at all
@Moriambar 1987 for me

7:20 PM
2007 for me.

@DavidCarlisle well you were out of the picture, as @egreg. Too old to have a word in this :P

@Moriambar @egreg's old: I just started young
@PauloCereda maybe once you've been using tex for 30 years you'll be able to use it to finish your thesis?
2

@DavidCarlisle Yeah, me too. There's also some Scots that's like that too. You get bits and pieces, but a lot is ununderstandable.
@Moriambar I published my first package in 2009, first class in 2011.
@Moriambar But I still consider myself an amateur.

@Moriambar It's not about how long you use (La)TeX, it's about what you do when you do that

@JosephWright apparently some people use it to write documents and never really program in it. Not sure I have met any of those people though:-)

7:32 PM
@DavidCarlisle well, it's been 30 years, you must've been very young

@DavidCarlisle :)
@DavidCarlisle Certainly not at any TeX meetings (which is hard to get through to some people)

@AlanMunn way more advanced than me. First package 2017 (never felt the need for one, let alone a class!!!)
@JosephWright probably, but I don't see much to do with it except typesetting :)
@JosephWright @AlanMunn for example I did not quite get the hang of minipages and things. That's why I am trying to be more active here, to try and learn something more

@DavidCarlisle It's a feature, of course

@Moriambar Just to depict very young: Started with LaTeX at all in 2014.

@TeXnician fantastic!

7:44 PM
@Moriambar What? That I didn't know about the magnificence of LaTeX before?

@TeXnician that you, after three years are already an active member of the community
(and possibly more an advanced user than me) :)

@Moriambar Probably not, just a very careful reader of documentations ;)

@TeXnician nevertheless I don't feel that I should be able to solve any of your possible LaTeX problems
@TeXnician I think that it's the key to solve many questions here. e.g., I read here about the forest package, read the first pages of the package documentation (maybe the first two) and answered a question right after
@TeXnician wait a second, that does mean that I have to be careful in writing typoaid documentation?

@Moriambar Let's say I don't care about typos ;)

@TeXnician It's not typos I'm worried about
:P

7:49 PM
@Moriambar That's great. I do not do that straight away. Usually I first have to digest the docs...

@TeXnician Nah, I'm a quick learner (esp. if docs are well-written)

@Moriambar Don't worry at all. I've also read the complete KOMA documentation and am still alive. The most important thing is that the reader is able to understand the aim of the package and then there's source code ;)
@Moriambar Please stress that if if it comes to LaTeX packages!

@egreg actually it probably is:-) I'll forward the mail

@TeXnician If I have toread the source codes, I'd better wait for @egreg or young @DavidCarlisle to answer better. Ps: KOMA? No, please

@Moriambar Yeah, that's the other option, but as you may know I'm member of this site for few months only. Before that I really used to use package source codes (and still do). Btw: KOMA is not that bad (I love its customization options and all of my three classes are based on that).

8:07 PM
@TeXnician you're German, aren't you?

@Moriambar Maybe?! Just look back in this chat (some days ago there were some nearly clear hints) ;)

@TeXnician anyway, I do not understand LaTeX source, most of the time
@TeXnician using KOMA means you're bound to be German

@Moriambar It's not that important as we are a friendly community eitherway.
@Moriambar :D

@Moriambar Good that being German does not mean being bound to KOMA ;-)
5

8:13 PM
@ChristianHupfer yes, indeed

8:37 PM
For @Mico: please see my 2 new comments to your answer at tex.stackexchange.com/questions/366244/…. The method you suggested breaks down when the \cref or \crefrange appears in a different chapter from the one that contains the actual examples environment.

@murray: The addressing of users with @ does not work the user has not been in chat recently. You can test this with name that pops up if you use @ + name. If this is not the case, the user wasn't in chat for some period

@ChristianHupfer: not sure what I do -- do I type literally "@ + Mico" or "@+Mico" or "@Mico", as I had done?

wth??? temporary fault on the red button???

@murray the ping to Mico will not reach him from here you woul dneed to coment under his answer
@Moriambar main bbc coverage went as well, just came back

@DavidCarlisle thanks

8:44 PM
@DavidCarlisle: OK, I had already commented under his answer; was trying to see if he was here in chat.

@murray if @M does not offer Mico as an alternative the ping will not work (in chat you can only ping people who have been here in the last day or so)

@DavidCarlisle Yes, if the \uccode is not updated, there is no change to ß; then, of course, one needs a definition for the active version of uppercase ß (U+1E9E)
