@JosephWright apparently it's all your fault:-)

12:16 AM
@wilx er not sure what you mean. It is defined in the format so universally defined. whether it does what you need in all situations depends on what you need....

7 hours later…
6:51 AM
@DavidCarlisle Yes, I saw
@DavidCarlisle One of the things on my 'to do' list to to try to tidy up Till's code for redefining core commands: it's a bit of a hack-up. That said, I don't think it changes do anything other than add the <> notation. (The issues with Till's code are largely to do with robustness.)

7:48 AM
@UlrikeFischer If you need any help with MikTeX questions you know where to ask ^^^ :-)

Jan
8:25 AM
@all Good morning everbody
Congratulations David.

@DavidCarlisle Do you think it would be worth asking him for a full demo?

8:51 AM
@Jan I have never even seen a miktex installation:-)

9:01 AM
Oh my, Yahoo! won't be no more in a couple of weeks...

@PauloCereda Huh?

@JosephWright The company was bought and they will rename it to Altaba.
Will be no more
Ouch, my English fails terribly today.

@JosephWright oh

Jan
@DavidCarlisle I have, but I can't remember :-)

9:14 AM
@PauloCereda if you really want to sound like a native englishman slip in as many spurious negatives as possible, don't you think, no?

@DavidCarlisle ooh

@DavidCarlisle Perhaps Leslie will start watching the beamer repo: I see Frank has decided to :)

@JosephWright Frank has starred your repo, didn't you see it, no?
@DavidCarlisle ^^

@PauloCereda Yes

@JosephWright Now I am confused. Is it yes meaning you didn't see it, so it's technically a negation to what I just commented, or is it a yes meaning no as in you saw it, so it's a double negation...
@DavidCarlisle ^^ LOOK WHAT YOU'VE DONE

@DavidCarlisle I'd have picked The Dubliners version :)

@DavidCarlisle the lyrics hurt my brain. :)

@JosephWright have sound off, and that was first yt hit:-)

@DavidCarlisle I guess having the lyrics is useful

@JosephWright ooh it sounds nice

9:19 AM
@DavidCarlisle I've no Windoze box, as you know, but…

@PauloCereda the trick is that is negations doubled for stress not to negate the negation, which is an idiom that ensures total failure to translate to anything else:-)

It's so awesome to have TeX manage all documents of a conference. I generate lists, name tags, certificates and proceedings with just a few arara invocations. :)
@DavidCarlisle ah!

9:38 AM
@CarLaTeX: No more info about the duck, at least from the Brazilian side. :) I believe the duck is now in your domains. :)

10:23 AM
@PauloCereda Unfortunately I haven't received it yet! A couple of days ago there was a piece of news about the postal centre of Peschiera Borromeo going haywire due to Amazon's parcels. I think it'll be late...

@CarLaTeX It will arrive, don't worry. :)

@PauloCereda I'm looking forward to receiving it! :)

@CarLaTeX <3

Anyone understand what is wanted in
Thanks. I do not see .bst file. (I have bbl file but I do not use natbib). In the bbl file, I do not see \BibitemOpen stuff. You also mentioned this. But now if i want to create a bbl file with \BibitemOpen stuff and create the bst file. How can I do so? — kww 5 mins ago
I have a feeling I'm missing something!

3:59 PM
@DavidCarlisle You are hereby appointed as miktex assistent!
3

4:16 PM
@UlrikeFischer I'll answer @egreg's MikTeX questions, and you can do the rest

@DavidCarlisle use emacs is a valid MiKTeX answer?

@PauloCereda That's like 42, so it's good for anything

@egreg even my thesis? :)

@PauloCereda Of course. That is an answer to most computer related problems.

@PauloCereda Exception.

4:19 PM
@egreg oh
@DavidCarlisle emacs thesis.tex

@PauloCereda By the way, there was light snow, today.

@egreg ooh

@PauloCereda You would have finished it by now with emacs (C-x C-f thesis.tex ret \C-c \C-e ret ret ret C-x C-s and you are done)

4:59 PM
@DavidCarlisle @JosephWright latex-community.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=98101#p98101 Anybody working on something like that?

@Johannes_B It's a feature of the file system, so much the same as C:/.... I'd probably suggest the path of least resistance is to mount the server as a drive: for example, my 'home' folder is \\ueahome3\stfsci2\c227\data\Documents but is also accessible as U:\Documents

@Johannes_B doesn't that just work? It's like using a mounted disk on unix??

yo'
@PauloCereda @egreg @DavidCarlisle @barbarabeeton current temp -9C, expected -17C towards the morning. I go prepare my car for this.

@DavidCarlisle @DavidCarlisle I never tried. I'll let the user know. Thanks.

@Johannes_B @Johannes_B you don't even need to map it to a letter:

5:05 PM
@DavidCarlisle I'll check with my TL set up

@DavidCarlisle Amazing.

@JosephWright I decided not to attempt it from cygwin, but generally I'd trust what Akira says about TeX on Windows:-)

@DavidCarlisle It does :)

@JosephWright OP says he is using Linux. Most likely TL

@JosephWright could you zap that email address from the above quote thanks (or just delete and I'll repost without)
@Johannes_B then just use samba or equivalent and map the windows share as part of teh unix filesystem
Akira Kakuto

to Martin, tex-live
Dear Martin Heller,

    Thats good news. How about
    Long path names
    pdftex \\?\some long path\test.tex
    and UNC paths
    pdftex \\server\share\test.tex

All is supported, but use / instead of \.
In the case of path names with spaces, quotation is needed.
If you don't use 8.3 names, they should already work in
TeX Live 2013/2014:

pdftex "c:/some dir/some file.tex"
pdftex //server/share/test.tex
pdftex "//server/share/some dir/sample text.tex"

5:10 PM
@JosephWright Where is your post gone?

@Johannes_B I'd missed the Linux part

@JosephWright ah

@Johannes_B Better answer, still using TEXINPUTS, posted

@JosephWright Great, thank you.

5 hours later…
10:21 PM
@DavidCarlisle Ah, strangely enough I've stumbled across my Leslie is having 'fun' with beamer and \includegraphics :)

@JosephWright s/my/why/ ?

@DavidCarlisle Till's redefinition of stuff fails to allow for the (xparse-syntax) s O{} O{} m situation, as he's defined it in terms of s O{} m only

@JosephWright hmph:-)

@DavidCarlisle One of the things I'm planning to do is look over the entire \newcommand<> set up: it's buggy. The only question is whether just to go 's*d it, use xparse'

@JosephWright which inconveniences all the uses of the graphic-s- interface ...

10:25 PM
@DavidCarlisle As it is there's a fix in from me to allow for the star
@DavidCarlisle Exactly
@DavidCarlisle Oddly, no-one has reported this before

@JosephWright but not for uses of the graphics interface with a 2009 latex distribution I guess..

@DavidCarlisle No, that's before I was involved
@DavidCarlisle Perhaps I will mail Leslie at least to say 'ah, I see the issue: I'll fix it'

@JosephWright i was going to suggest mailing and saying it was all your fault... (but I have to fix that undefined GPT@whatever command in pdftex.def (I'm tempted to remove all the nested ifs with 100 code paths for undistributed versions of pdftex)

@DavidCarlisle I'll mention something on the team list: I've got a related question for everyone anyway (tomorrow now)
@DavidCarlisle I'd thought much the same re. pdftex.def: yes, it's all clever but it's entirely pointless today and makes the code horrible
@DavidCarlisle Cf. expl3 primitive requirements: any pdfTeX in the last 10 years has all of the 'sensible' stuff

@JosephWright when I made luatex.def I stripped all that out, could do same in pdftex.def

10:41 PM
@RestlessC0bra I trusted Google Translate for the Greek phrase, as I know nothing of the language, beyond the alphabet. ;-)egreg 34 mins ago
@egreg you could have asked me ^^

@DavidCarlisle I'm able to Google myself, Ευχαριστώ πολύ, დიდი მადლობა

@egreg what makes you think I need such props?

@DavidCarlisle Intuition

@egreg Il mio greca è buono come il mio italiano

@DavidCarlisle greco

10:44 PM
@egreg impossible

@DavidCarlisle I'll go and edit all grammars, then.

@egreg perhaps it's just a naturally self documenting sentence:-)

@DavidCarlisle I've suggested a correction.

11:20 PM
Uh, someone here who can tell me, why "natbib Error: bibliography not compatible with autho-year citations" comes up, even if i checked my .bib file and each @article has a year and author?
thanks :)

Q: Package natbib Error: Bibliography not compatible with author-year citations

grrrbytesI have a basic tex file and a bibliography which is exported from Mendeley However, when I want to cite in the author-year style, I get the error: Package natbib Error: Bibliography not compatible with author-year citations. (natbib) Press <return> to continue in numerical citation style. Any...

@WillRobertson hi, what do you want me to do with tuenc.def ? :-)

Yes, i saw that post (and one other). Which is why i checked every @article in my .bib file to have authors and year - still it will crash
(+ i deleted .aux and .bbl files before running latex and bibtex again)

@Shiuyin the help text for that error is:
{Check the bibliography entries for non-compliant syntax,\MessageBreak
   or select author-year BibTeX style, e.g. plainnat}%
@Shiuyin which suggests that either there are missing fields -or_ you have specified a bibliography style that isn't suitable for natbib's author-year processing

thanks for your answers - i am now looking for some online-validation tool for my .bib file
to see, if there is still anything wrong

@Shiuyin trying commenting out (or deleting) chunks of it at a time.

11:28 PM
@Shiuyin if you use \bibliographystyle{plainnat} does the error go?

That*s what i tried. The overall .bib has 18 articles. I currently only cite 4 of those (early phases of my thesis), and i tired commenting out all 4 cites, still it crashes

@Shiuyin try commenting out all 18

ye, error goes away, if i cite with plainnat

@Shiuyin so there is nothing wrong with your bib file you are just using an incompatible bst style

well i use "abbrv", which is the default one my university forces me to use

11:34 PM
@Shiuyin there is a reason that tex errors all have help texts:-)
@Shiuyin just don't tell them:-)

hahaha
not possible ^^
but even though no error message shows up, my test-cites are all shown as "?" instead of [1], [2], etc. as "abbrv" should do

@Shiuyin i have a very poor view of universities making arbitrary rules about tex source, when people used typewriters (and don't say that was that long ago..) universities didn't try to tell you what typewriter to use they just cared if the content of the thesis was true...
@Shiuyin that is of course normal until you latex again
@Shiuyin if you are forced to use a numerical [1], [2] style for citations why are you telling natbib to make citations in author-year style that is [carlisle1998] that is the reason for the error.

oh man
i had it all set to "abbrv" but the author-year error message came up

@DavidCarlisle why doesn't \textheight get redefined in a minipage?

anyway, thanks for your help. i will try to fix this tommorrow

11:41 PM
@StrongBad because originally minipages always had unspecified height, when we added the optional height specification (which almost no one uses:-) for 2e, we could I suppose have added a local setting of \textheight but I don't recall it ever being suggested
@Shiuyin if you want the abbrv style but to use natbib features use \bibliographystylke{abbrvnat} which is a modifed version compatible with natbib, see texdoc natbib page 5 at the bottom
@StrongBad mostly textheight is to do with page breaking and minipages even when given the height specification never break into multiple boxes

@DavidCarlisle I am trying to make a poster and am putting pgfplots into a minipage hoping that would constrain the size.
I am probably abusing \textheight
I think I can pull the value from \@mpargs

@StrongBad specifying the height of a minipage fixes the vertical size of the box but doesn't do anything to make the content fit in that size, it just makes tex complain if it is too big

@DavidCarlisle my pgfplots are set to be \textheight x \textwidth in size...

@StrongBad oh in some file to be input? but why put a pgfplot into a minipage (unless you are adding some text as well?)

@DavidCarlisle I have a table in one file to be inputted and the figure in a different file. I want them side-by-side.

11:49 PM
@StrongBad yes but each of those is already a box so putting them in a minipage does nothing useful

@DavidCarlisle So I could just define \textheight and \textwidth so my stupid table and pgfplot code gets the size right?

\makebox[\textwidth]{\input{filewithtable}\hfill\textheight=.4\textheght\textwi‌dth=.4\textwidth\input{filewithplot}}

@DavidCarlisle well that is a lot cleaner... Thanks

@StrongBad the outer makebox is just to get in hmode so any blank lines at the start or end of the input files don't start a new para so stop them being side by side

@DavidCarlisle I have no idea any more! :)
@DavidCarlisle What do you think about:
\ImportTU → loads tuenc.def with some redefinitions
\input{myfontrange.def} → for any home-grown TU definitions
This means we can make tuenc.def as normal as we like.
