@Johannes_B It's a feature of the file system, so much the same as C:/.... I'd probably suggest the path of least resistance is to mount the server as a drive: for example, my 'home' folder is \\ueahome3\stfsci2\c227\data\Documents but is also accessible as U:\Documents

    pdftex \\?\some long path\test.tex
    and UNC paths
    pdftex \\server\share\test.tex


All is supported, but use / instead of \.
In the case of path names with spaces, quotation is needed.
If you don't use 8.3 names, they should already work in
TeX Live 2013/2014:

pdftex "c:/some dir/some file.tex"
pdftex //server/share/test.tex
pdftex "//server/share/some dir/sample text.tex"

Yes, i saw that post (and one other). Which is why i checked every @article in my .bib file to have authors and year - still it will crash

(+ i deleted .aux and .bbl files before running latex and bibtex again)

That*s what i tried. The overall .bib has 18 articles. I currently only cite 4 of those (early phases of my thesis), and i tired commenting out all 4 cites, still it crashes

@Shiuyin i have a very poor view of universities making arbitrary rules about tex source, when people used typewriters (and don't say that was that long ago..) universities didn't try to tell you what typewriter to use they just cared if the content of the thesis was true...

@StrongBad because originally minipages always had unspecified height, when we added the optional height specification (which almost no one uses:-) for 2e, we could I suppose have added a local setting of \textheight but I don't recall it ever being suggested

@Shiuyin if you want the abbrv style but to use natbib features use \bibliographystylke{abbrvnat} which is a modifed version compatible with natbib, see texdoc natbib page 5 at the bottom

@StrongBad mostly textheight is to do with page breaking and minipages even when given the height specification never break into multiple boxes

@DavidCarlisle I am trying to make a poster and am putting pgfplots into a minipage hoping that would constrain the size.

@StrongBad specifying the height of a minipage fixes the vertical size of the box but doesn't do anything to make the content fit in that size, it just makes tex complain if it is too big

This means we can make tuenc.def as normal as we like.
