Hi. If anyone can check whether this is correct, it would be helpful.
Hi Peter. I just ran into your note 1, which I didn't notice at the time I copied this code some years ago. I'd consider this is a bug, or at least an unreasonable restriction. However, there's an easy way around it. Namely use: \DTLforeach[\DTLisSubString{#2}{\RowID,}]{#1}{%. I.e. match \RowID, rather than just \RowID. Let me know if that seems correct to you, or if you are missing something. If you think it is correct, consider changing your answer. — Faheem Mitha 5 hours ago
Peter said he didn't have time to check it right now.
This is an old question involving datatool, which I based a couple of later questions on.
Peter said I could edit his answer, but I'd like to have confirmation before I do so.

@DavidCarlisle Here's a well-written answer on the topic of the GPL and licensing as was been talked about in the last few days.
26
A: How can large open source projects be monetized?

Bruno LowagieWhether or not you can make money with an open source project, depends on many things. Based on experience, I see three factors that are important: Which license did you choose? Take a look at the schema in this answer and you'll see that on one end, you have permissive licenses and on the othe...

@AlanMunn Huh? Grocer's apostrophe

Is it still Will that is maintaining the unicode-math? A user sent a bug report on mathtools where, if mathtools is loaded after unicode-math then \underbrace is garbage in the following example:
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{amsmath}
\usepackage{unicode-math}
\setmathfont[Extension=.otf]{texgyrepagella-math}
\usepackage{mathtools}
\begin{document}
\(\underbrace{x\ldots x \ldots x}_{i\ \text{times}}\)
\end{document}

8:46 AM
Morning all
@daleif Will is certainly looking after unicode-math

@daleif mathtools should be loaded before unicode-math

@egreg Indeed, you do get a warning
*************************************************
* unicode-math warning: "mathtools-overbracket"
*
* Using \overbracket and \underbracket from `mathtools' package.
*
* Use \Uoverbracket and \Uunderbracket for original `unicode-math' definition.
*************************************************
which suggests this is a 'known issue'
Must mumble at Will about using backticks there (I'm not a fan in message text)

9:05 AM
@JosephWright but it only adjusts \underbracket
@egreg but is the mathtools adjustment to \underbrace then carried through unicode-math?

@daleif I don't know. Why don't you try?

@barbarabeeton not sure bold math should be a priority but an interesting test case for stix2....

Q: xits-mathbold.otf: Some ugly symbols

user96150I do not know how to get equations completely in bold without mistakes with Xits-boldmath. Here is my MWE: \documentclass{article} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{fontspec} \setmainfont{xits-bold.otf} \usepackage[math-style=upright]{unicode-math} \setmathfont{xits-mathbold.otf} \begin{documen...

@egreg I've never understood the fix, so I do know what to look for, but I'll have a look
Hmm, placing mathtools before unicode-math of course ends up giving the wrong version for \LaTeXunderbrace (it saves the default version, which hasn't been updated with unicode-math and the specific math font
Hmm2, \underbrace{foof}_{zzz} looks bad in that font even without mathtools, not wide enough

@barbarabeeton Re: new community ads: Maybe some ideas in my answer in meta 3 years ago (shameless plug) could be adopted...

@Johannes_B it's a feature (I'm sure @egreg knows all such features)

@DavidCarlisle Does anybody want bold parens?

@Johannes_B in the standard cm setup there is no bold extension font
@Johannes_B they need a bold font if they want them. There is no bold cmex (other font sets may be different...)

@DavidCarlisle Note that I had to renew my email provision today: it's going through but currently no access to the usual address (I forgot it was outstanding)

9:55 AM
@Johannes_B Add \SetSymbolFont{largesymbols}{bold}{OMX}{txex}{b}{n} to the preamble, load bm and do \bm{\Big(}

@egreg excellent package, bm !
2

@Johannes_B The result is horrible, but it doesn't really matter. ;-)

@JosephWright OK will ping you here if needed:-)

@egreg Oh, that is true :-)

@DavidCarlisle Hope to add some stuff to the news today

10:08 AM
Two bad boxes in the whole 88-page thesis: one of 1565 in a figure caption and one of 1694 in the bibliography, whence both acceptable. Achievement unlocked!

@JosephWright OK, if I see what changed in 0.88 I may do some more tests (I suppose in theory I could look through the svn log but I'd rather have a top level changelog:-)

@DavidCarlisle Indeed: that's why each expl3 release gets a summary from me :-)

@yo' I'm sure a bad box is immediate fail

yo'
@DavidCarlisle I'll counter-attack with sloppy !!!!

@yo' if tex's happy, I'm happy

yo'
10:10 AM
@DavidCarlisle and if it's not, I don't read the log.

@yo' you and 99.999999999999% of tex users.

yo'
on a more serious note: does this sound good to you? I~hereby declare that this dissertation thesis is my own original work and that I~acknowledged all used references.
@DavidCarlisle :-)

@yo' possibly I'd drop the "hereby" (which is correct but a bit victorian) on the otherhand in most contexts where you need such a declaration, the wording is given and not optional.

yo'
@DavidCarlisle yep. The Czech guidelines list the Czech version

@yo' ah:-)
@yo' pass that to google translate and print whatever it says?

yo'
10:14 AM
btw, hereby should probably be dropped, since the original does not say místopřísežně :-D
@DavidCarlisle I don't dare trying it

@DavidCarlisle Installing v0.88 now

@yo' whilst there are arguments that the usage isn't technically correct I'd use "thesis" or "dissertation " but not both. (I don't think I've ever seen both together) but I'm not an academic any more, @JosephWright sees more: of these things,

@DavidCarlisle Agreed: I personally dislike thesis (as it really means 'idea'), but it's commonly used so ...

@yo' in the other direction:
Prohlašuji, že tato disertační práce je můj vlastní původní práci a že jsem na vědomí všechny použité reference

yo'
@DavidCarlisle in Czech it's disertační práce, which really means dissertation(adj.) work(n.). I translate it as dissertation thesis by the analogy with master thesis as the translation of diplomová/magisterská práce
@DavidCarlisle sounds good, modulo declination and one missing modular verb :) (problem of acknowledged as an adj. vs v.)

10:18 AM
@DavidCarlisle Formats rebuilt ...
@yo' In English we wouldn't say masters thesis so ...

@yo' no but in masters thesis the master refers to the degree not to the work, hence commonly used phrase "PhD thesis" but "dissiteration" refers to the work same as "thesis" (even if the etymology is suspect)

@DavidCarlisle Yup, dissertation for a masters, report for a final year undergrad project

yo'
@DavidCarlisle couldn't dissertation be used as an adjective?

(I'm marking interim reports as I type)

yo'
@JosephWright I gave 14 F's and 3 D's today...

10:20 AM
@yo' declination? verb? don't bother me with mystical grammar technicalities:-) (google warned that it changed "acknowledged" to "acknowledge" before translating:-)

yo'
@DavidCarlisle ah that makes sense...

@yo' not in this context, I think.

@DavidCarlisle Test suite running: I guess I better update l3build on CTAN soon

yo'
@DavidCarlisle so you guys would drop "thesis" and keep "dissertation"? Sounds good. After all, there are no official guidelines on the translation, AFAIK

@yo' What degree is this for?

10:23 AM
Germans also happily say master thesis and alike. On a different note, there is latextemplates.com/template/masters-doctoral-thesis

yo'
@JosephWright PhD of course

@yo' :-)
@yo' OK, I'd go with dissertation. From my own:
This dissertation is a summary of research work carried out in the Department of Chemistry of
the University of Cambridge between October 1999 and December 2002. Unless stated
otherwise, the results are those of the author’s own work. It has not, either in whole or in part,
been submitted for any qualification to any other University.
which was what everyone in my area had copy-pasted for the past n years.
> A dissertation submitted to the University of Cambridge in partial fulfilment for
the degree of Doctor of Philosophy
@Johannes_B Yes, I know, but in English we don't (at least not in the UK)

yo'
@Johannes_B Doctoral thesis is a theoretical option, but I'd vomit after seeing it on my own work.

@yo' Oh, that template is loved by so many many people. Masters/Doctoral-Thesis.

yo'
@Johannes_B circle the one that applies

10:29 AM
@DavidCarlisle I guess we need to hassle Karl about .ini files
@DavidCarlisle And get all of the other stuff onto CTAN

@JosephWright yes

@DavidCarlisle Mainly you I think ... ;-)

yo'
@JosephWright @DavidCarlisle intranet.cvut.cz/informace-pro-zamestnance/jak-se-rekne/c-a -- under "d"

@yo' Oh no, i see a titlepage in my head with both degrees and a bright yellow text marker circle around one of them.

yo'
@Johannes_B :D

10:32 AM
@JosephWright OK so... make a new repo for shellesc tidy up luatex85 and set up both with ctan style zip files (probably no need for tds or would you always do tds these days?)

@DavidCarlisle Nothing obvious in the LuaTeX SVN log as to what is v0.88 as opposed to v0.87 :-)
@DavidCarlisle I always do TDS as it's easy, but there's no particular need (Karl after all is not keen)
@DavidCarlisle Overall plan sounds good
@yo' Yes, but it's probably a Google translate entry :-)

yo'
@JosephWright :D
@JosephWright like distance study, I suppose you don't use this, do you?

@yo' "distance learning" (usually)

@yo' distance learning is when you do a course but don't physically attend, part time is different

yo'
10:48 AM
@JosephWright but here, you can organize your study either as presence (you attend all courses), distance (you attend only exams) or combined (most the courses have usually smaller number of sessions and there's a lot of homework)

11:01 AM
@JosephWright except I've already moved shellesc to tools I now remember:-)

@PauloCereda I've some good idea ;-)

Aaarrrggghhhh, it's bad enough when tagged to the question, but I just looked to the right and saw all of those bold faced tags in the "Favourite Tag" sidebar --- it's just .... shudder.... <-- yes it looks exactly as bad as this...

@RomainPicot hold on hold on. :)

@Johannes_B ;)

@PauloCereda :) When did the bold tags happen?

1:15 PM
@clemens No idea, Clemens. @Johannes and @BMWurm mentioned them today. :)

@BMWurm All the freaking tags on main are bold. I hope this is a glitch in the matrix and not a serious design decision my the SE team.

This is the best tag description ever.

@clemens Within the last two hours i think.

@yo' thesis tends to get just used for phd thesis, whereas dissertation is more general (and arguably more correct) so it does have that connotation slightly. To be honest if it's for a phd (or similar) I'd call it a thesis, that's what almost everyone else would do

@RomainPicot we need Psmith to decide (@PauloCereda)

@DavidCarlisle seems to be vice versa in germany. dissertation is equal to a Phd, also called Promotion.

A: Tags displayed in bold

Johannes_BI think the main site looks a little bit silly now. In the following screenshot, the things encircled in red need to be bold as well. The content of the blue circle needs to be super-mega-bold to fit again. Just reverting the bold tags to normal would be easier and better, though.

@Johannes_B yes but in Germany you probably have some rules somewhere that says what words to use and what the words mean. This is English so we just make it up as we go along.

@DavidCarlisle :-)

yo'
@RomainPicot but you compare non-comperable

1:29 PM

@JosephWright Any thoughts on why \SIrange{1e-3}{1}{\m} outputs 1mm to 1mm with exponent-to-prefix enabled? \SIrange{1}{1e3}{\m} on the other hand works. For convenience, complete example below.
\documentclass{article}

@barbarabeeton A small interesting bug report a researcher just gave me:
\documentclass[a4paper]{memoir}
\usepackage{amsmath}
\begin{document}
\begin{alignat*}
\phi(t) &= ...
\end{alignat*}
\end{document}
Shouldn't alignat* give an error about the missing number. I'm not sure why it actually works.

@cfr tex.stackexchange.com/q/288184 sounds a bit like a feature request towards you...

2:45 PM
@daleif It works because \phi is a \mathchardef token, so TeX considers it the <number> it is looking for.

yo'
@egreg goodness.

@JosephWright just sent email to someone at uea, hope it was you:-)

@egreg interesting, we just thought it was funny, the author does not usually use alignat, and thus wasn't aware of the argument. He has just seen me use it in my edits of his notes

@yo' An alignat with 286*2 columns! ;-)

@egreg *2?

2:53 PM
@daleif alignat{2} provides two pairs of rl columns.

yo'
@daleif you give the number of the pairs :)
@daleif he might have been more surprised by the missing phi ;-)

@egreg of course, my bad
@yo' that was what he reacted to

yo'
@daleif SOMEONE ATE MY PHI!!! (well, someone ate my pie, but that's another story)

@yo' Happily it wasn't a pie!
@yo' Oops!

btw, I just ordered three hardcover copies of my thesis. The paper/plastic cover ones will follow tomorrow ...

@DavidCarlisle Yes, me
@DavidCarlisle Tried tex.stackexchange.com/questions/288194/… with LuaTeX v.088: oops ;-)

@JosephWright I'll let you sort it out with Frank:-)
@JosephWright would it have worked with 87?

@DavidCarlisle OK
@DavidCarlisle No :-)

@JosephWright that's good (in a warped sort of way)
@JosephWright you should have write access to luatex.def and I just pushed something to luatex85 (simple ctan script for now, could be l3build but then I'd feel pressure to make all those examples into test files:-)

3:17 PM
@daleif -- thanks for report. nobody has ever reported this problem before, so accepted and recorded. @egreg's analysis is correct, of course. if \phi had instead been f, it would have blown up. clearly needs to be fixed. (surprised it hasn't been noticed before; maybe noticed, just not reported.)

@barbarabeeton not sure it's easily fixable, a (math)chardef token is accepted as a number everywhere.

@yo' In American English, (and I think British English too? @JosephWright @DavidCarlisle) dissertation is only used for PhD theses. thesis is a more generic term that can be applied to the final document at any level. So "undergraduate/senior/honors/Masters/PhD thesis" is fine, although Americans in particular like to make the thesis / dissertation distinction.

@AlanMunn rather the other way round I think (although to be honest dissertation isn't used at all, or at least wasn't when I was a postgrad) and you'd never use thesis for an undergraduate level document

@DavidCarlisle might it be possible, as an exceptional case, to require that the next thing after {alignat} (with or without star) to be an open brace? that wouldn't catch everything, but should cut down the exposure.

Jan 12 at 12:15, by David Carlisle
@PauloCereda finished your thesis?

@barbarabeeton Unless you require \begin{alignat}{<number>}, checking for the brace, there's little you can do. Of course this would break documents using \begin{alignat}2 maybe because they were converted from AMS-TeX: the manual is sprinkled with \alignat 2

@PauloCereda I wonder how long we could keep up a conversation that only consisted of chat permalinks?

@RomainPicot Oh no!
@DavidCarlisle That would be interesting. :) Something like evolved Markov chains. :)

3:23 PM
Nov 18 '11 at 17:38, by Yiannis Lazarides
@egreg if you use markov chains you can make almost any author's text sound authentic but meaningless.

@DavidCarlisle Do you consider "Quack !" and "Coin Coin !" as a language? (with @PauloCereda we can speak a lot with this only two permalink ;-) )

@egreg -- okay. i guess the "obvious fix" is simply to document this problem in very strong terms. really too bad. so you're saying that ams-tex also has this problem?

@DavidCarlisle Ok. So dissertation is a particularly American thing then.

@PauloCereda Quack ! :)

@DavidCarlisle Oh no!

yo'
3:27 PM
@AlanMunn well, it's thesis now since that's what I ordered at the bookbinder's

@DavidCarlisle -- in the u.s. (as noted by @AlanMunn) it really is the practice to limit "dissertation" to the work written up for a ph.d. what i wrote as requirement for masters degree was definitely a "masters thesis" and if i'd called it a dissertation i would have been regarded as pompous.
@egreg -- thanks. i'll look up the documentation on that, but it's too late, i'm afraid, to do anything about it.

@yo' I think that's completely fine.

yo'
at least most countries agree that thesis (without any adjective) is the PhD thesis.
@AlanMunn so do I :)

@barbarabeeton Unfortunately, Spivak was fond of Knuth style input such as \frac12 and the manual is full of such shortcuts. :(

3:45 PM
@PauloCereda love your commit comment github.com/cereda/arara/commit/… :)

@clemens :)
@clemens: any method naming suggestions?

@egreg -- to an extent, i agree. i definitely prefer delimited arguments to "everything must be braced" (having once spent more than three hours trying to find a single stray brace in automatically generated input where the data consisted of groups of 3-5 lines). it's just unfortunate that mathchardef tokens aren't able to be distinct from numbers.

@AlanMunn AS @DavidCarlisle says, in the UK you'd never call anything other than a PhD final document a 'thesis'

@barbarabeeton The alignat environment is not defined to have an argument; rather it calls \start@align with just two arguments instead of three, so the final one is looked for. One could introduce a previous sanity check such as
\newenvironment{alignat}[1]{%
  \CHECKARG{#1}%
  \start@align\z@\st@rredfalse{#1}%
}{%
  \endalign
}

yo'
@JosephWright In Czechia, thesis with no adjective is certainly a PhD thesis, but master thesis or master's thesis is used a lot.

@barbarabeeton However this would break if a clever user does \mathchardef\mynumber=3 to be able to say \begin{alignat}{\mynumber}

@JosephWright So what would a masters final document be called? Or an undergraduate final document (if such things exist)?

yo'
4:06 PM
@AlanMunn master degree project

@PauloCereda nice !

@barbarabeeton If alignat had been defined with an optional argument, rather than a mandatory one, the problem wouldn't arise. Interesting feature, not bug. ;-)

@AlanMunn Undergrads write a final report. We don't get many masters in chemistry done that way, but I guess I'd go with dissertation.

@JosephWright mail bounced for me as well
@egreg \begin{alignat}{\tw@} :-)

@egreg -- that's just too perversely clever. but i'm hoarding your comments to write up the bug record. thanks.
@egreg -- yes, feature, but must be written up as a bug since the documentation is insufficient.

4:27 PM
@PauloCereda Should it be a funny name?

Drecks #LaTeX… KOMA-Script will net mit fancyhdr kann aber keine Bilder in Kopfzeile. Man darf fancyhdr, aber wie man’s tun soll ist kaputt

@clemens this time, no. :) It has to have a clear indication of what's being done. :)

Well, that escalated quickly.
@yo' @clemens @ChristianHupfer ^^^^

@Johannes_B translation?

@Johannes_B But why does he think scrlayer-scrpage doesn't allow pictures in the header?

4:31 PM
@RomainPicot "Damn #LaTeX.. KOMA-script cannot with fancyhdr, but cannot image in header. You can fancyhdr, but how is broken"
@clemens Look at the conversation and you know why.
@RomainPicot Please don't think i am drunk. I tried to translate the german as is ... broken and hardly undderstandable.

yo'
@Johannes_B tweet, so max 160 chars :)

@Johannes_B #german
:-)

@yo' To be honest, there are places where a human being can find help. TeX.SX, LC, gL, TW and others provide LaTeX support, with almost no limitation on characters. That's why i suggested gL in the very beginning.

Looking at those bold tags are giving me a migraine.

yo'
@Johannes_B oh it's meant as a question?!
@PauloCereda I rather don't look at the page :)

4:37 PM
@yo' :)

@yo' Maybe just some useless rant, noise in the vast nothingness of space.
When somebody walks by mumbling "I cannot find the freaking post office" i give him a pointer, even if he did not ask for it.

yo'
@Johannes_B because at first it looked like an announcement that KOMA will become fancyhdr-compatible

@Johannes_B MT has a long way to go still...

@yo' The fact that fancyhdr wasn't updated was the reason to ddevelop a KOMA-own version, iirc.
@AlanMunn MT ?

@Johannes_B I now use titleps instead of fancyhdr.
@Johannes_B Sorry, Machine Translation.

4:46 PM
@AlanMunn I translated that ;-)

yo'
@Johannes_B microtype or mathtools, choose one.
!!/choose microtype, mathtools, machine learning

@AlanMunn :-)
@AlanMunn And facebook.

@Johannes_B If you have lots of LaTeX using FB friends, FB isn't necessarily the worst way. And maybe the same goes for Twitter I guess.

@AlanMunn If you know LaTeX and just need a pointer, 140 chars are enough. If your question is: "My header title moved to apge end" ... not

5:04 PM

I asked this here before, but nobody gave me a pointer. Maybe i am more lucky today. Where can i read up on this vertical skip?
\documentclass{article}
\begin{document}
\parbox[t]{4em}{Miau!}
\parbox[t]{4em}{\hbox{} Miau!}
\end{document}

@Johannes_B the first one aligns on the baseline of M the second on the baseline of \hbox (I assume, didn't run it:-)
easier to see what is happening if you do
\documentclass{article}
\begin{document}
\parbox[t]{4em}{Miau!}
\parbox[t]{4em}{\hbox{oops} Miau!}
\end{document}

@Johannes_B \hbox doesn't start horizontal mode.

@Johannes_B this is also why this doesn't align:
\documentclass{article}
\begin{document}
\parbox[t]{4em}{Miau!}
\parbox[t]{4em}{\color{black} Miau!}
\end{document}
which is mostly documented as it's not my fault

@DavidCarlisle The twitter user complained wildly about this being KOMAs fault.
@egreg Thanks :-)

5:15 PM
@Johannes_B with hbox or color?

@DavidCarlisle \normalcolor under the hood.

@Johannes_B texdoc grfguide footnote on page 6 :-)

@DavidCarlisle I expected No, it's not my fault" :-)

@Johannes_B the fact that colour commands affect the position is rubbish, but pretty hard to avoid in a latex2e context (latex3 xgalley and/or luatex can possibly fix this (in different ways)

@DavidCarlisle Wait, luatex can fix stuff?
:-p

5:22 PM
@Johannes_B well the text won't move when you colour it but it may segfault and you get no text at all, but at least that is a proper respectable computer science type of error.

@DavidCarlisle I see a seg fault on the top of main :-)

@Johannes_B yes that's what I meant:-)

@DavidCarlisle My provider has the usual 'it may take 24 h for a change to happen' business, so I can't really hassle them until tomorrow

@Johannes_B I should sue them. ;-) By the way, it's a great project and it will be in TeX Live 2016, if things go smooth.

@egreg Just saw it on the TL mailing list :-)

@egreg I think it should be included, even if arara has to come up with a rule for it. :)

@Johannes_B What's the matter? I am busy ;-)

5:50 PM
@ChristianHupfer Better not read it then ;-)

@Johannes_B Where?

@ChristianHupfer Two above your ping is a link to twitter.

@Johannes_B I never follow Tweets -- It seems I have to die still being silly ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Not even the ramblings of a green penguin? :-)

@Johannes_B Black Counter to Green penguin: No

5:53 PM
@ChristianHupfer Copy that, over and out
:-)

@Johannes_B quaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack
