Morning all

8:02 AM
@JosephWright morning

@DavidCarlisle (u)pTeX support nearly ready

@JosephWright anything we should do for 2e? (for some definition of we)

@DavidCarlisle Not unless we want to wade through all of the changes they make there: I think not!

@JosephWright I guess I'll add the accented WwYy for Welsh, I think that's all that's needed there, maybe @cfr will pass by and confirm:-)

@yo' Ulrike has found it useful already

yo'
@DavidCarlisle really? Well, I've found that maybe we get very low attendance at Answer the Unanswered because it's on the weekends :-)

@yo' Can be moved, of course

17 hours ago, by Ulrike Fischer
@DavidCarlisle I learned that there is less trafic on weekends -- would never have guessed it ;-).

yo'
@JosephWright it's just an observation. I would hardly attend more on weekdays than on saturdays. Any time is bad for me to spend 3 hours straight on the site...

8:36 AM
@yo' You see, You and Ulrike, both.

yo'
@DavidCarlisle isn't it called "independent observation"? :)

@yo' or "reading the same data"

yo'
@DavidCarlisle :)

Q: LaTeX Service for PhD Students?

Rachel SleepsI am close to finishing my PhD. Some of my peers use LaTeX. Obviously, it looks much better than Word and alike. As I wrote a few papers that go into my final thesis, I however have numerous formats depending on the journal in question. I would like to transform them all into one final document w...

9:43 AM
@yo' I don't agree with the answers. Naturally it can get costly, and also learning to something yourself is a good thing, but I'm often hiring people to do things for me - to clean windows, to build a shelf, to repair my computer or my car. One simply has to decide if the quality and time gain is worth the money. Do-it-yourself is not always the best strategie to get something done.

yo'
@UlrikeFischer Well, I am on your side in this, but I feel unable to express myself in a reasonable way. That's partly why I posted it here.

@yo' Well if you think my remark is reasonable you can quote it. I don't have the time this week for an extended discussion - I have to prepare a lot of material for a latex course.

yo'
@UlrikeFischer ah good luck!

10:25 AM
@yo' I saw your answer. But my name is Fischer not Fisher. Btw: A lot of thesis support is not so costly as many students only need help for polishing and not for the whole typesetting.

Q: Why was this question marked as a duplicate?

David P. KendalUse system fonts (Mac OS) while using book template I understand that it is a question about changing the font, but the asker was using the correct code to change font. My answer explains why it doesn’t work in this case, a problem which people may well have using fontspec on OS X.

Maybe we could answer this.
:)

10:53 AM
I read that Soy Milk could be the milk introducing itself in Spanish...

11:23 AM
@UlrikeFischer oh, sorry for this. Corrected.
@PauloCereda anybody can. (and I did)

11:36 AM
@yo' <3 I'm a humble duck who doesn't understand the technicalities of duplicated questions. :)

Anyone know of a tikz example somewhere, showing how one can define an object in tikz/pgf, kind of like a node, such that given its name, say B, then I get access to several key points on the object B. In the drawing I need the same box four times, and I dislike copying code, and might as well learn to programme tikz better. suggestions?

yo'
@daleif that's an interesting question :-)

@yo' come to think of it, isn't this just what the shapes library does? Thus look in the source.
Hmm, got to get my Emacs setup to work on this Win10 PC. Driving me nuts that I do not have my normal tools. Then again learn a little more about TeXStudio usage.

@daleif look at pics in the documentation (Chapter 18). Nodes are more sophisticated but pics are more flexible.

Ok, just learned something new, CTRL-Alt-arrows changes orientation in Win10, don't do tht on my Ubuntu.

11:45 AM
@daleif I think it's a thing since Windows 7. My dad accidentally hit that key combination and was in despair. :)

@UlrikeFischer Interesting. Did not know that one. I think mine is a little more complicated (rectangles with stuff in it), so the shapes seems a better candidate.
@PauloCereda lets just say my laptop went Australian for a while until I realised what happend.

@daleif shapes will give a lot of key points by default, so they are good if the shape you need exists ... (but you can use nodes inside a pic and imho also access its points.)

@daleif ooh :)

@UlrikeFischer it just gets messy getting inner nodes positioned right. Especially when I can to be able to just place the object at any point I like. My internal tikz/pgf skills are not that good.

12:25 PM
@daleif Is tex.stackexchange.com/a/241737/586 somewhere near what you need?

2 hours later…
2:02 PM
@JosephWright You broke chemmacros ;-) See tex.stackexchange.com/questions/266481/…

@egreg I'd seen that

@JosephWright Somehow, the space that got ignored is not any more.

@egreg I'll track it down in a bit: half-way through sorting out (u)pTeX tests at the moment

@JosephWright In this case it's not a big deal, but it might be a symptom for something more serious.

@egreg Indeed
@egreg A chance for me to try out git bisect :-)

2:18 PM
@egreg tick \leadsto the deserving (for a change)

2:31 PM
@clemens Have you worked out what's wrong in tex.stackexchange.com/questions/266481/…? I'm just about to track through expl3 changes to work it out

@DavidCarlisle No justice, as you always say.

git bisect seems quite good

@JosephWright you broke Will's code again?

@DavidCarlisle Saw that too
@DavidCarlisle Will test that after the chemmacros one

@JosephWright having to form a stack of broken packages, busy day:-)

2:38 PM
@DavidCarlisle Yes, plus all of the e-mails I've had about sys plus I'm half-way through doing (u)pTeX plus I have my job to do!

@JosephWright still when we incorporate ltluatex/luatexbase into the format: what could go wrong, have that to look forward to....

The NSA is manipulating internet nodes again: WTF

@DavidCarlisle :-)

@DavidCarlisle Oh! The tick went to the right answer!

9 mins ago, by egreg
@DavidCarlisle No justice, as you always say.

3:20 PM
@DavidCarlisle But sometimes it gets smoothed out. :P

@DavidCarlisle Both problems are Bruno's fault :-)

3:39 PM
@JosephWright it's important to have someone to blame.

@DavidCarlisle Yes, though to let him off this was actually deliberate

4:28 PM
Hello

@JRichardSnape hi

Hi. I'm a noob here, use chat a bit over on stack overflow
I'm browsing round for help on why a particular bit of tex is causing my latex compile to hang. Is here a good place to ask?

@JRichardSnape Hi
@JRichardSnape You an always try ;-)

That probably sounds a bit vague, re-reading. I have a longtable in a 196 page document. It looks well formatted to my (fairly untrained) eye. When I comment it out, doc compiles fine. With it in, compile hangs. Using pdflatex within Texstudio
It's a long time since I used LaTeX (15 years) so I've forgotten which bits of the environment setup might be relevant
I guess my first question is - is longtable noted for causing any such problems? If it's too involved - I'll post a proper question on the main site

@JRichardSnape Ask @DavidCarlisle ;-)
@JRichardSnape More seriously, no, it's normally well behaved

4:34 PM
Thanks @JosephWright I kind of assumed it would be (I'm using it all over the document elsewhere). I must be missing something I guess heads back to re-examine doc

@JRichardSnape longtable is famous for being bug free:-)
3
@JRichardSnape it's not actually likely to loop in the longtable code (it's not a very looping algorithm, it just outputs pages and never goes "back") but something within the table may be misbehaving of course. Going offline for a bit, back later.

@DavidCarlisle Thanks David - I hadn't realised immediately that you are its author :)
I suspect there's something in the table contents that causing a strange recursion. I'll find it... eventually...

@JRichardSnape Kinda unfair: David is the author of at least half of the LaTeX code out there. :)

4:53 PM
Oops - I could stick my foot in my mouth frequently in this unfamiliar environment. Apologies - no offence meant to anyone - I should have recognised the name.

@JRichardSnape Don't worry :-)

@JRichardSnape No worries, pal. :) We like to tease David. :)
Specially @egreg. ^^
@JRichard: by the way, it's nice to meet a fellow Java developer. :)

5:17 PM
@PauloCereda Me? When? ;-)

@egreg :)

@egreg always?

@DavidCarlisle Persecutory delusion. ;-)

@egreg it could be, although there is historical evidence in the log

@DavidCarlisle I declare not guilty

1 hour later…
6:46 PM
@JosephWright just saw you pinged me here. I guess this is resolved now? :)

@clemens Yes

Did you know? More than 1 in every 4 referrals come from duckduckgo.com:
Never heard of DuckDuckGo.com until now...!

@Werner they can't all be @PauloCereda, can they? ;)

@clemens ...maybe...?!

@clemens Quack! I mean, hello. :)

7:07 PM
An update of classicthesis?

@Johannes_B looks that way

@clemens Thought i never see this hapening.
@clemens Just listening to the Kazutoki umezu kiki band
Saw them live a couple of years ago. It was great.

7:30 PM
@Johannes_B nice! I wonder what they call the genre… some kind of fusion, probably

@clemens I don't know what it was called. But it was very very loud and just as awesome. That guy played almost the sax almost nonstop for two hours.

1 hour later…
8:39 PM
@JosephWright hmmmm

@DavidCarlisle Indeed

@JosephWright I might try a run with all font names removed, see how many failures are left...

@DavidCarlisle Sounds fun

@JosephWright I still can't read the lua gsub stuff as easily as I can regex, makes reading bits of l3build hard:-)

@DavidCarlisle Send me the requirements and I'll send back the patterns
@DavidCarlisle Or better: ask @PauloCereda (as we can now take pull requests, but don't let on!)

8:43 PM
@JosephWright Yo.

@JosephWright yes that's one way, thanks:-) except I suspect requirements are somewhat iterative, change a bit run suite see if more pass....

@DavidCarlisle Well you can 'send' the requests here

9:01 PM
@DavidCarlisle I think I've found another LuaTeX 'feature'

9:13 PM
No, have to let them off: my fault this time :-)

9:23 PM
@Werner It is a misattribution of SO in my opinion. It is a search engine but they classify it as a social referral site.

@percusse The help says that's Google's fault :-)

@JosephWright Right ;)

@percusse Oh...

@Werner The motto is that it doesn't track your stuff unlike the rest of that search engine list
But their coverage is still in early stages

@percusse Yup.

9:28 PM
It keeps getting better though. I made it my default already
A few times a day, I have to change it to Google.

Percusse 100K update: –252

@egreg Aaah don't jinx it. I will get a negative bounty or something :P

@percusse And you've been a member longer than me. :P

@egreg But my brain runs slower
duck duck ... go.. @PauloCereda is here

@percusse Soy milk duck. <3

9:35 PM
The avatar looks like one of Stephen King book covers though
before after

@percusse o.O

free association olympics

9:50 PM

@JosephWright I may send you one for help in a bit. The line (un)wrapping is still off for the lua specific normalisation (one file the wrapped lines are joined, and in the other not) I tried to fix it but got it wrong somewhere;-) but I'm a bit pessimistic, I have an aggressive normalisation now that removes all font names, removes all plus and minus components but still fails 91 tests so only 6 better than with just the rounding of fil components to 3dp and only 10 better than the svn version:(
