@GonzaloMedina You could make \polynomial protected (if it isn't already) and inside \polynomial first thing read the argument and fully expand it.

@StephanLehmke: Hi Stephan, long time no see! How are you?

1 hour later…
10:40 AM
@PauloCereda Currently rather far away from TeX I'm afraid :-(
Working a lot with XSLT, SQL, JavaScript and such, which is admittedly all much easier to manage and also a lot of fun ;-)
I've been reading here from time to time, but not logged on most of the time.

@StephanLehmke apart from the sql, which I've mostly avoided, sounds like my day job:-)

@DavidCarlisle We'll I'm mostly learning currently, so it's all very new to me.

I am doing \includegraphics[width=\textwidth,height=\textheight,keepaspectratio]{rules/21} and getting error
./report.tex:2207: Dimension too large.
<argument> \ht \@tempboxa
the file 21.pdf is large, 221,870 bytes. It is one page actually, cropped pdf image. Is there a limit for including image files like this in Latex?

Nine upvotes (so far) for a question that might be off-topic due to a simple typo. The voting system is really strange.
9
A: What in Heavens is this error complaining about?

egregThe error message you get from platex is ! Undefined control sequence. l.11 \headding {please stop crying and tell me what your problem is, Latex} ? and it's pretty much clear: the control sequence \headding is not defined. It's probably a typo and you should type \heading (one...

@Johannes_B the upvotes are for the (good) answer, not for the question. Amazingly it still has two upvotes

@clemens Imho, the answer is a comment at best.

@Johannes_B if the typo was the problem (which is a rather safe assumption) then the answer solves it, doesn't it?

I get the feeling the author of that question does not have a long and happy future using TeX if he/she is going to get upset so easily. Or, to put it another way, you aint seen nothing yet.

@clemens Yes. But ... i don't know. Making aware of a typo should not get upvoted that hard.

1:31 PM
@Johannes_B Maybe the upvotes are for @egreg's politeness.

@FaheemMitha He/She could have known what to do by reading a bit of introductory material.

@Johannes_B Well, quite. That's my point. Sorta.
I see egreg is approaching 400k.
Maybe you guys should have a party or something.
Hmm, the plot of egreg's rep is almost exactly a straight line...

@Johannes_B I just looked: neither jsarticle nor the only lab.sty I could find define a \heading or \headding… either an incomplete MWE or a bad template…

@clemens Or just the assumption that heading should work. Or just trolling. I mean, read the question.

@Johannes_B I don't think it's trolling. Why bother posting some code when all you want to do is troll? LaTeX errors can be frustrating, especially when you're new to them and believe what your editor tells you is the whole story. It took me quite a while myself until I learned what the log file is for :)

1:42 PM
@clemens It is the whole over-emotional tone of the question.

@Johannes_B I had to smile when I read it the first time :)

@clemens Me too :-)

2:14 PM
@StephanLehmke I am glad to hear you are ok. :) I was beginning to worry. :)

3:00 PM
@cfr Oooh, well that's just because of \int_show:N. Remove that line and you won't need \nonstopmode, either. Sorry for the confusion. For whatever reason, all of the _show:N commands cause 'errors'. — Sean Allred 1 min ago
Does anybody know why this is?
I'm not sure if it's an unimportant bug or something there by design, e.g. I probably don't want _show: commands in distributed code.
Hmm, never mind! @cfr set me straight :) Not errors, it's just how \show works… still odd behavior in my opinion :) Still odd that it will cause TeX to exit with non-zero status, but I guess that can't really be helped at this point :)

3:28 PM
@SeanAllred Everything that alters the workflow changes the exit code for TeX stuff, it annoys me so very much, that's why I had to include an exit key to v4 in order to surpass this nuisance. :(

@PauloCereda It really doesn't make any sense at all. I mean yes, it ran abnormally, but that doesn't mean it exited abnormally.

@SeanAllred Indeed.

@FaheemMitha I needed points because I'm on journey. ;-)

@egreg I don't see what one of those things has to do with the other...

@egreg: Hi! Back home?

@yo' Arrived safely at the hotel in Austria.

@yo' Oh.

@PauloCereda No, I finished the first stage. Tomorrow afternoon or early evening, depending on what route I'll choose: the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße is near but unfortunately the forecasts say rain up there. :(

@SeanAllred \show is a forced error, essentially. If you don't want that use \typeout{\meaning instead

@egreg Oh.

@JosephWright Please, registering l3 prefixes: How's it done? I can't find it on the L3 website...

15
A: How do I register the prefix of my expl3 package?

Joseph WrightFirst, a bit of background. Registration is of course not 'compulsory' but is encouraged: the idea is to have a much better idea of who looks after which code than is the case with LaTeX2e modules. The prefix register is available from GitHub. Registration simply requires informing the team that...

@DavidCarlisle Thanks.

@clemens Hi, I just noticed that you've got a typo in your profile text: transtlations

@yo' thanks, fixed :)

@clemens you're welcome :)

@JosephWright @StefanKottwitz @MartinScharrer Unfortunately, when creating the tkz-kiviat tag I made a mistake and created tikz-kiviat (with a spurious i). Is there a way to delete the wrong tag: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/tikz-kiviat ?

@GonzaloMedina Remove it from the question and it will be 'garbage collector' removed

@JosephWright Ah, OK. I've already removed it. Thanks.

7:55 PM
How are people getting on with their TUGboat articles?

8:06 PM
Don't we have an answer with all the legal units of measure?

@JosephWright done all mine!

@egreg Yes
@DavidCarlisle :-)

@JosephWright "Yes, we have", or "yes, we haven't"?

@egreg Yes we have: I remember a table from someone showing them all (@Werner, @GonzaloMedina, someone like that)

43
A: What are the possible dimensions / sizes / units LaTeX understands?

Stefan KottwitzFrom the plain TeX reference: pt: Point pc: pica (12 pt) in: inch (72.27 pt) bp: Big point (72 bp = 1 in) cm: Centimeter mm: Millimeter dd: Didot point cc: cicero (12 dd) sp: Scaled point (65536 sp = 1 pt), the smallest TeX unit ex: Nominal x-height em: Nominal m-width Available in math mode...

@egreg @JosephWright ^^ although I'm not sure that's really a duplicate of a question about inches in \includegraphics

8:12 PM
@egreg Yes. :)

@JosephWright Found the same as @DavidCarlisle

@egreg That was the one I was thinking of

@JosephWright Voted for closing, there's also a CW answer.

8:29 PM
One article drafted: will look over it again tomorrow then send to Karl

@PauloCereda fyi, motorists are told not to stop for duck crossing the freeway! I thought you might to read this news item ;) grindtv.com/wildlife/…
"Patrol spokeswoman Lt. Tiffani Nielson told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. “People should not stop on the freeway for ducks."

10:56 PM
@Nasser awww <3
They should stop!
:)
"a driver who stopped for ducks potentially could face a criminal charge" Wow.

11:31 PM
@PauloCereda No, they (the people) shouldn't! Cars should, though ;)

11:47 PM
@all Would it make sense to answer a question basically attaching some pieces of a package documentation? (Or course, I'd make it CW, but still...)
