@HarishKumar: I think I can guess who's who. :)
Tom, Joseph, Henri, Heiko, Frank, David, Bruno, Martin, Herbert, Julien, Petr, Stefan, Enrico, Urike, Arthur and Will.

@PauloCereda bingo! 100% correct!

@PaulGessler: where were you? :(
@PaulGessler Yay! :)

@PauloCereda depending on when this was taken I was either sleeping or working in my hotel room, lol.

Either @Arthur is really tall, or Will is... well... quite short. :)
@PaulGessler ooh :)
@Johannes_B, @ChristianHupfer: ^^ please explain. :)
I want GTA to have a mod for yodelling while driving. :)

12:30 AM
@Paulo It's a mix of both, really :-) Joseph is actually taller than me.

@PauloCereda Nothing to explain, just don't, don't. Oh please don't watch that.

@ArthurReutenauer Joseph looks quite tall indeed. :)
@Johannes_B ooh
:)

@PauloCereda Oh oh!. That is good. :) Thank you. Now I see some very young lads and some elderly men ;)

I noticed that we always tell poster to provide a MWE. But many folks who answer, actually just give one or 2 lines answer, even the experts, and do not show a MWE in the answer, and not show the output (where appropriate). Should not the answer also be self contained just like the question? Many times I have hard time with these answers and how to use them since they are just small fragment and missing much code.

@HarishKumar :)

12:39 AM
Bruno, Henry, Joseph all look very young :)

1:27 AM
@PauloCereda
@Nasser Many of us do try to give MWE answers with images as well. But some questions are so simply answered with a line or two of code, it's not always worth the effort. I guess if you have questions about an answer you could leave a comment asking for clarification.

@PauloCereda -- not yet. won't be heading home until august 3.

Q: amsbook customization of toc, section alignments and running heads

user82510I am working with \documentclass[12pt,twoside,openright]{amsbook} and I wish: titles of Chapters centered in the page titles of Sections left aligned (for instance: 3. Third Section) In the contents, the full titles of the Sections and, since such titles are sometimes long, the running heads...

@egreg or someone else familiar with amsbook ^^^^^. i've left a comment on this how it's best done, but i can't do anything about it until i get back to the office in august, so someone else please give this person a workable answer.

@PauloCereda Wrong combinations of genes, that's the best explanation ;-)

it seems that with KOMA v. 3.20 fancyhdr will not work anymore. I wonder how many documents will break.

@Johannes_B: The solution: Don't use KOMA :-P

@ChristianHupfer Support is a bit easier for KOMA classes. I don't need to patch stuff all the time and explain it. The amount of patching \@chapterhead on site is just ridiculous.

@Johannes_B: Yes, but I don't like KOMA anymore. It's too much overhead for me ... I will use the summer holidays and remove scr.... stuff from my work sheet etc. files

@ChristianHupfer Ok.

10:01 AM
@DavidCarlisle and @JosephWright: One for you tex.stackexchange.com/questions/256807/…

10:30 AM
@ChristianHupfer think comments are right that prop is essentially a sparse array, but for dense arrays with numeric index we don't currently have code.

@DavidCarlisle You're the expert... I have not used l3 very much so far. Perhaps you should comment or answer there

@Nasser it depends on the answer and the time available. people choose to ask and should take the time to ask an understandable question. if I only have a minute to spare it may be more useful to give a one line answer than no answer at all.
@ChristianHupfer did you see @JosephWright svn stats he posted yesterday:-)
@ChristianHupfer almost all my l3 use is from before we did latex2e....

@DavidCarlisle: No, I didn't. Should I have seen it?
@DavidCarlisle Ah, that's where the bugs entered in l3 :-P

@ChristianHupfer in general no, but if you think I know lots about l3 then perhaps yes;-)
14 hours ago, by Joseph Wright
@DavidCarlisle For fun, I checked through all of the LaTeX3 SVN:

@DavidCarlisle You're just about destroying my idolizing image of you being a LaTeX(3) hero , you know?

10:50 AM
Hi

@ChristianHupfer excellent, it's all going to plan then!
@DominicMichaelis hi

@DavidCarlisle :D
@DominicMichaelis New user? Hello from me too...

@ChristianHupfer Not really but a very inexperienced one

@DominicMichaelis Ah, ok, never noticed you so far ;-) But I cut down my chat time a little bit, perhaps that's the reason
@DominicMichaelis: Inexperience is quite relative, I would say ;-)

at the moment I need to replace a lot of number ... unit by \Si{number}{unit} and i think it would be much easier if I know something about regular expressions :D

11:00 AM
@ChristianHupfer there are people here with some years more experience than me, I've only been using latex since 1987.
@DominicMichaelis the regex syntax is easy enough once you get used to it, the hard part is deciding what exactly is the rule you need to distinguish the numbers to be wrapped in \Si from other numbers such as dates etc (or you use a simpler regex that does not distinguish and use an editor that lets you say yes/no in each case, rather than sed or perl just changing all the files in one go)

@DavidCarlisle ...which is ten years more than I am using it. I think, one of the first packages I used was graphicx... I always wished to talk to the author of that package, but I can't remember his name.. Do you him, by chance? ;-)

@ChristianHupfer no idea

@DavidCarlisle the document has fairly no other numbers in it

@DominicMichaelis are you on unix ? (so have sed or perl or something) or windows?

I have windows, but winedt search function allows regular expressions
the replace function too

11:10 AM
@DominicMichaelis ok syntax varies from system to system but basically you want to replace ([0-9.]+) *cm by \\Si{\1}{cm} that is match a run or digits and decimal pint followed by any amount of space followed by cm by \Si with the contents of the first () group in the first argument. some regex systems use \1 some use $1 to refer to the () groups. I don't know winedt but ideas are always the same
@DominicMichaelis if getting brave you could replace cm in the match by (cm|m|Kg) or whatever and replace cm in the replace by \2 so it does all units at once, but I'd do them one at a time, as a check:-)

oki thanks :)

@DominicMichaelis and if it all goes wrong and messes up your file, blame @ChristianHupfer

@DavidCarlisle Or @PaulGessler ... or @egreg

11:42 AM
ah i think now i got it, i have to search for " {+[0-9\,]}2
without the 2, and replace it by \\SI\{{+[0-9\,]}\}

hhh
11:55 AM
What is so special in this expression that compiler does not stop?

$a\Rightarrow b\iff a\and\neg b$

Just trying to write proposional logic and got into some loop, why?
Solved!

It is \land, not \and

i got a lot of overfull boxes which are all exactly 12,0 pt too wide from using \multicolumn{2}{p{\linewidth}}
what would be a better width?

12:10 PM
@DominicMichaelis \dimexpr\linewidth-2\tabcolsep

ah thanks :)

Is function composition really denoted with f \circ g? Oh my.

@PauloCereda yes how else?

@DominicMichaelis Just thought it could have other symbol rather than simply \circ. :)

@egreg feature request for kantlipsum: Provide a few shorter texts. This will be useful for testing constructions that are only expected to contain smaller amounts of text.

12:23 PM
@PauloCereda the other common symbol is juxtaposition but that can get confusing:-)

@DavidCarlisle Indeed. :)

@hhh I'd have expected a simple undefined error for \and (\or is usually the problem as that is a tex primitive)
@PauloCereda are you writing function application on the right? please do!

@DavidCarlisle: would it be evil if we add a legend to the blog photo based on Monty Python's Spot the looney sketch? :)
2

x f g = x (f ∘ g) so much more logical

@DavidCarlisle I'm going with lambdas. :)

12:28 PM
@PauloCereda not evil, but a bit rude to egreg don't you think?

@PauloCereda: Too easy: All of them are looneys :-P

@DavidCarlisle that's mean. :)
@ChristianHupfer :)

@DavidCarlisle why ? if you have linear mappings A,B (i will denote the induced matrices with A and B as well you have) (A\circ B)x= A\cdot B \cdot x

@DominicMichaelis but that's cheating:-) in that you choose to write the matrices that way (rather than transpose) so left multiplication works, but for general function application you don't have that luxury. When I did algebra as 1st year undergrad the professor made a point of always writing functions on the right (partly to get rid of half the students before Christmas I think:-)

1:23 PM
@JosephWright do you mind having a look at this at some point

Q: Beamer interaction remove footline

daleifCan anyone explain why the MWE below is bad? When I compile it, there is no footline on the first page!?! I use the <+> and <+-> in order to not having to explicitly having to specify the various overlays. \documentclass{beamer} \usepackage[T1]{fontenc} \usepackage{fix-cm} \usetheme{Copenhagen}...

It find it strange that this combination can remove the footline.

1:39 PM
@ChristianHupfer what did I do now? ;-p

Just read about this new monospace font: github.com/larsenwork/monoid

@daleif I have been meaning to do that request for the blindtext package. :-)

2:07 PM
@Johannes_B I just often see myswelf going into the sources (shortcut in my editor) to take just a piece to use as sample code.

@daleif For a caption where just two sentences are needed, i usually make up some strange sentence :-)

@DavidCarlisle I think I've tracked down Morten on Github :-)

@PaulGessler I know what you did last summer :-P

Interesting blog stats: I get more hits on my own one than the TeX-sx one gets

@JosephWright on my blog I've enough hits to (virtually) earn £34.36 :-)

2:56 PM
@DavidCarlisle ooh money

@PauloCereda define "money"

@DavidCarlisle paper thingy used to be exchanged for goodies. :)

@PauloCereda that's what I thought, the minimum unit of payment is £100 (I think) so I haven't any actual paper. The minimum payment is considerably more than I've got in 8 years: I think not posting anything and having readers that don't click on adverts doesn't help.

@DavidCarlisle What if we all click an advert a day?

@PauloCereda I'll get banned for having drawn attention to the adverts: like serial voting reversed, but more serious

3:04 PM
@DavidCarlisle oh no

@daleif Fun one :-)

3:31 PM
@JosephWright strange definition of fun. Was just testing my new theme on old code and stumbled upon it.

4:03 PM
@daleif A nice bit of detective work and an outcome that it's not my fault :-)

@JosephWright Is it worth it to comment about someone who just turned my comments into an answer? I don't really care, but it's not the best practice to get into.

\underbrace{\lambda}_{\text{função de}} \underbrace{x}_{x} \underbrace{.}_{\text{que}} \underbrace{x + 1}_{\text{incrementa valor de } x}
Guys, is there a way for me to keep this thingy equally spaced vertically? :)

@PauloCereda Quick and dirty put \strut inside each of the first arg of the \underbrace.

@PauloCereda or \vphantom{fçq}.

4:19 PM
@Alan, @Heiko: thanks, both approaches work. :) But only the last part seems unaligned, for some reason.

@AlanMunn Link?

The last part is a little low, I guess.

@PauloCereda The + has a descender, therefore, you also need \vphantom{+} in the math part.

@HeikoOberdiek oooooh
@Heiko: thank you thank you thank you!

@PauloCereda Or you can do the opposite: \mathbin{\smash{+}} for the visible plus sign.

4:26 PM
@HeikoOberdiek Is there anything you don't know? :)

@PauloCereda I am afraid, lots of things, even things, where I do not know, that I do not know them.
6

@HeikoOberdiek oooh :)

yo'
@PauloCereda We had an ice cream with @egreg today!

@yo' yaaaaaaaaay
@yo' which flavour? :)

yo'
@PauloCereda vanilla :)

4:41 PM
@yo' ooh vanilla TeX Live ice cream! :)

yo'
@PauloCereda :)

@yo' What about Petr?

yo'
@PauloCereda We didn't take him with us

@yo' Cool

Q: RTL with tabluar

BachThis is a question about xelatex, even though I mention LyX here. My goal is to produce an RTL table with one row, two columns, which looks more or less like that: +---+---+ ...

4:46 PM
@JosephWright we went for a trip. I had to go there anyways. We've visited a nice historical town (with the 3rd largest Czech castle) and a small pittoresque castle in the middle of nowhere. In the evening, we'll go for a good local beer :)

@daleif Added to the memo

@JosephWright since you keep telling me to fix xor I thought I'd read the doc to remind myself... `texdoc xor` shows a pdf that just shows the graph of a neural network or something and `texlua build.lua doc` in `xpackages/xor` produces `Typesetting xo-capt

@PauloCereda Did you notice that I'm in most of David's photos? Of course, if you guess who I am. ;-)

@egreg I did notice! :)

yo'
@egreg lol (a laugh coming from next door :D )

@egreg ah but we are going to win the americas cup, which we've been trying to win since 1851...
@PauloCereda I was trying to take photos of different people at the conference but this Italian bloke kept walking in front of the camera (phone).

@DavidCarlisle The test file runs :-) (It's the 'Oxford trial')

@JosephWright as in "my house" :-)
OK I'll start there..

@David: you will love my talk this year in the UK-TUG meeting. :)

Tom, Joseph, Henri, Heiko, Frank, David, Bruno, Martin, Herbert, Julien, Petr, Stefan, Enrico, Urike, Arthur and Will.
I got all right! :)
Of course, my search algorithm was slightly different. :)

yo'
@PauloCereda Well, me and @egreg were just making sure to get the order right

@yo' :)

yo'
btw, has anybody got any news from percusse? Because he either didn't come or managed to hide his identity even further...

@yo' Sir hasn't gone to Darmstadt.

@PauloCereda so now you get to add up the rep see what total rep for that picture is (or was)

5:27 PM
@DavidCarlisle Hold on. :)
@DavidCarlisle 1,558,652
9

@PauloCereda not a bad amount:-)

@DavidCarlisle Indeed. :) Speaking of which, @egreg is about to hit 400k. :)

@PauloCereda he did tell us that every coffee break and meal time:(

@DavidCarlisle LOL

yo'
5:55 PM
@DavidCarlisle well, he surely didn't tell you because you were always at the L3 table, while @egreg was not.

6:14 PM
@percusse Re the meta question: I did say keks was taking risk :-) (I'd already seen the answer he got)

6:37 PM
@JosephWright True. And somebody got the bait :P

@percusse Indeed
@percusse I'm tempted to follow up on the main meta but it's non-productive

@JosephWright I think it's better to have the grunt on our meta instead. That would at least prevent the Meta.SO residents flocking to the discussion.

@percusse Exactly: on the main meta you are talking cross-network so our local conventions don't show

@JosephWright I (tried to) participate a bit on SO. That place is really interesting. But every time I engage with someone I always remember @AlanMunn's gem:
Dec 15 '12 at 4:10, by Alan Munn
@percusse Exactly. There's nothing more annoying than a bunch of disciples. :)

6:53 PM
@percusse SO's scope is so huge I do understand why they have a different set of norms

@PauloCereda #4 is wrong (now)

@DavidCarlisle Wait till the very end. :)

@PauloCereda its still playing...
@PauloCereda except that favour is spelled with a u

@DavidCarlisle :)

7:03 PM
@DavidCarlisle Certainly if you want to be the British monarch

@PauloCereda judging by your songbook I guess you are disqualified.

@DavidCarlisle Act of Settlement?

@DavidCarlisle Uh-oh. :) And according to the British monarchy, catholicism is transitive. :)

@JosephWright yep
@JosephWright xoutput.pdf has an interesting set of comments:-)

@DavidCarlisle The whole thing does!
@DavidCarlisle Will remind myself of what actually appears

2 hours later…
8:53 PM

@ChristianHupfer Grr, dine-o-saw

@PauloCereda: A riddle, for you :D

@ChristianHupfer awwww

@JosephWright Just saw Jurassic Park \Romannumeral 3 ;-)

@ChristianHupfer: I am back to the bee avatar. :)
@UlrikeFischer: Hi, welcome back!

9:05 PM
@PauloCereda In my heart, you never changed from being the bee duck ;-)

@ChristianHupfer awww <3

@PauloCereda My nose just grow like Pinocchio ;-)

@ChristianHupfer :)

9:24 PM
@ChristianHupfer goo.gl/2et9VS

9:54 PM
@AlanMunn I can't speak Italian without moving my hands. :)

@PauloCereda The art is Spanish, though... does that make a difference?

@AlanMunn a big difference. :)

10:15 PM
@PauloCereda A long time ago I was in a car driving around the ring road in Milan and the Italian driver's hands were only on the steering wheel about half of the time.

@AlanMunn :)

10:30 PM
@AlanMunn Sorry, was distracted! Thanks for that

@ChristianHupfer No problem. It's a clever cartoon.

@AlanMunn: In Germany we call this the Zeitalter des gesenkten Blicks...

@ChristianHupfer Yes, there is that aspect of it too. :)
