@PauloCereda In what way not work (on phone)

6:40 AM
Been sorting out my laptop: reinstalled TL2010,11,12,13,14,15 from DVDs :-)

@PauloCereda use \centering \arraybackslash
@JosephWright morning from Mainz!

@DavidCarlisle Morgen
@DavidCarlisle Wie geht's dir?
@DavidCarlisle wir duzen uns, oder?
@DavidCarlisle Seen the LaTeX-L thread?

I'love see if the waiter is any good at English

6:58 AM
@DavidCarlisle :-)

I'll not i'love auto correct. . No will look. ...

@DavidCarlisle How's the weather looking?

1 hour later…
8:14 AM
@JosephWright hot although occasional threaten of rain showers

@DavidCarlisle Thanks

@JosephWright about to go to airport?

@DavidCarlisle Not yet: last flight of the day is 1815 so will get the train mid-afternoon

2 hours later…
10:26 AM
Can somebody check, if the code blocks are block? I see everything as inline code, so linebreaks are not treated right. What do you see? en.wikibooks.org/w/index.php?title=LaTeX/…

10:38 AM
@PauloCereda Or use \tabularnewline instead of \\ . This is often better than \arraybackslash if you want correct centering in the column:
\documentclass{article}

\usepackage{array}

\begin{document}
\begin{tabular}{l>{\centering}p{2cm}}
xxx& abcabc\\abc \tabularnewline
xxx& \arraybackslash abcabc\\abc
               \tabularnewline
xxx& \arraybackslash abcabc\newline abc \\
\end{tabular}
\end{document}

11:02 AM
@DavidCarlisle, @UlrikeFischer: Thank you. :)

@Johannes_B -- i didn't even get that far. reading the entry for title pages, i found that there is a note for ams document classes to put the abstract before \maketitle. while true (with a very specific exception for one anomalous journal), it fails to say that the required method for inputting author information is very different with ams classes as compared to the "basic" latex classes. (i'm the one who gets the questions at ams when something doesn't work, so i care!)

@barbarabeeton I want to fix a few things in there, but i want to have the markup sorted first.
@barbarabeeton They have a template for block code (i think) but it seems to have changed over the last few days. I am unsure how all this works. en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Template:LaTeX/Usage
note the term template ;-)

@Johannes_B -- okay, i looked at the markup. i don't know how a block is coded in wiki language, but the coding does look suspicious to me. and certainly, the output is totally dreadfully wrong. absolutely the markup needs fixing.

@barbarabeeton It looked ok a few days ago, so i guess somebody changed the template. But i don't know how to access the template code (yet).

@Johannes_B -- there's a "small glossary" that just resurfaced in a link in mets. i added "template" to the list, but no definition.

11:10 AM
@barbarabeeton mets?
@barbarabeeton by the way, john Hammersley wanted to send me over some thoughts on templates (in reference to Overleaf) to contribute to the discussion. But nothing received yet.

@Johannes_B -- i'm wiki-illiterate, so can't help there. all i can claim to do is edit for content and mark for needed format changes. oh ... "mets" ==> "meta".

@barbarabeeton Can you give a link?

@Johannes_B -- hang on. laptop is dying. have to go search for plugin cord.

:-)

11:20 AM
@barbarabeeton Thanks, i was just reading the answer from percusse. :-)

@Johannes_B -- nice one, i think.

Oh no, I have a hearing obstruction and infection. :(

@barbarabeeton Yes, good advice.

@PauloCereda -- get thee to a doctor and thence to a pharmacy. and don't go swimming until the infection has gone away. (and thank you for your good wishes for a safe trip. it was. and i'm almost recovered from jet lag.)

@PauloCereda Oh, get well soon.

11:28 AM
@barbarabeeton That's exactly my plan. :) I will go to my doctor tomorrow and hopefully things will get better. :) I suffer a lot from jet lag, specially when hours are stolen from me; but you will get them back when returning to the US, so it's like using a backwards time machine. :)
@Johannes_B Dankeschon. :)
Naughty Europeans want to be ahead of time. :)

@Johannes_B -- is that your edit on the wiki getting rid of pdftex? i'd sure vote it up if i could. but the only edit i've tried to make to a wiki (not tex, if i remember correctly, but something i did know about), was rejected, so i just gave up. i tend to react that way, so i can spend time on things that are appreciated.

@barbarabeeton No, i linked this page here in chat and @egreg commented on the pdftex business. Next day, it was gone. It might have been @TorbjørnT. :-)

@PauloCereda -- jet lag is a wretched thing. i get jet lag going into daylight saving time. i figure it takes about a day per hour shifted to recover completely. usually easier going west, but going to india or japan, it's such a big difference that it's about the same as going east the same distance. (in other words, don't schedule anything important for at least three days.)

@Johannes_B same here

@Johannes_B -- ah! that change is still pending, so if you're making more changes, i think you should edit that one so it doesn't get lost. who is actually "responsible" for approving edits on that site?

11:39 AM
@barbarabeeton Absolutely no idea. I haven't found a button to accept the edit.

11:59 AM
@Johannes_B Ah yes, that was me. Didn't log in first, as I forgot that I actually had an account.

@TorbjørnT. Do you have any idea, how to alter a wiki-template?
@TorbjørnT. en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Template:LaTeX/Usage seems not to do code blocks.

@Johannes_B Nope. I've never worked much with wikis.

@TorbjørnT. :-) Me neither.

12:14 PM
@barbarabeeton thanks for the reply. Don't you hurry. I just found that post and wondered, if it is still actual.
@barbarabeeton enjoy your time in Darmstadt!

2 hours later…
2:23 PM
Why are there user questions in the discussion page of a wikibook?

@Johannes_B because people are strange? ;)

2 hours later…
4:27 PM
@Johannes_B I seem to have acquired a 'PM fan' on LC!

@JosephWright ooh how many?

@PauloCereda One
@PauloCereda Nothing particularly exciting: trouble with chemscheme, or rather with epstopdf interfering with auto-numbering

@JosephWright Oh no!

@PauloCereda Speaking of being a Doctor, by next week I should have a picture of my group on uea.ac.uk/chemistry/people/profile/joseph-wright#researchTab (have just discovered how to get our CMS to actually add my group to my webpage!)

@JosephWright yaaaay!

4:31 PM
@PauloCereda Currently on PhD student, one summer student, one Brazilian visitor but will gain another PhD student and a post-doc in October

@JosephWright I will try to visit you too. :)

4:43 PM
@JosephWright What does that mean?

@Johannes_B Lots of private messages from a user: would have probably been easier if they'd just e-mailed me!

@JosephWright I get a pm once in a while, i usually explain why a public thread is better

@Johannes_B Yes, was wondering about that myself

hhh
What was command to add newline in \sum or \prod?
moved it to main site, tex.stackexchange.com/questions/256037/…, I am sure I asked this earlier perhaps in chat but I cannot find it. Hope this is easier to find in future when forgetting...

@hhh Please dont use $$ <math> $$

hhh
4:51 PM
@Johannes_B I know people keep telling me it but so far everything has worked fine even with it so cannot understand the suggestion truly...

@hhh LaTeX uses it internally as we, but there are some additional checks involved in the background.
@hhh If people keep telling you that an alternative is better, yield or keep getting the same message over and over and over again.

@Johannes_B oh no

hhh
@Johannes_B haha I am happily the rebel until solid reasoning, everything has compiled alright many years wout any erros due to $$...$$ ... bling bling :D

Q: Why is \[ ... \] preferable to $$ ... $$?

Ben AlpertI've heard that you should use \[ ... \] for displayed equations instead of $$ ... $$, but why is that? I'd assumed that it's so that you can more easily tell which are starting and which are ending delimiters, but if I always use a syntax-highlighting text editor, I can see that easily based o...

hhh
5:11 PM
Perhaps I am stuck to $$...$$ because it is visually more accessible than [ ... ], using Texpad -- I have done so many typos w [ like [\ so less source of typos with $$, otherwise hard to explain getting stuck to $$ ... well when they update $$...$$ not to work, it is just a one vim oneliner to fix it, not big deal. Liking visually more accessible things :)
