@Nasser google always does that (or equally irrelevant things) to me, but how is it to know that I mean LaTeX and not latex? I find that add 'tex' as a search term helps, although I'm not clear why. I guess it searches on whole words and so it makes a kind of sense.
Not sure what to make of this

After a bit of work, UK-TUG website working again :-)
Just need to fix categories for all of our posts

8:05 AM
    LaTeX2e <2015/01/01> patch level 1

@DavidCarlisle For the next release we really need to have the date be that we actually send it to CTAN: they do not like the current version string

@JosephWright they should allow whatever version we say, the ctan upload form says date or version, why couldn't this one have said 2015/01/01 patch level 1 instead of 2015/07/01 which is going to be confusing?

@DavidCarlisle It's to do with the fact they like to be able to check they've not messed up, and that times tend to run in only one direction

@JosephWright yes but I just uploaded symbols.tex and didn't date it it just says version 3.4

@DavidCarlisle Yes but LaTeX2e doesn't have a version string

8:12 AM
@JosephWright it does that was the whole point, the string was supposed to be 2015/01/01 patch level 1

@DavidCarlisle Ah, but you see that's a date :-) I guess 2.10.2015.01.01.1 or something (taking 2e as 2.10 cf. LaTeX 2.09)

@JosephWright no it's not a date, and anyway they ask for dates in ISO 2015-07-01 format, it is a string loosely designed around a date concept.

@DavidCarlisle We can talk to at least one of them about it at TUG2015: certainly Petra will be there

@JosephWright probably we should take to team list but I think ctan.org/pkg/latex-base should be corrected not to say version: 2015/07/01 as that isn't the version and doesn't appear anywhere in the spftware

@DavidCarlisle, @ArthurReutenauer Could you check UK-TUG website is working for you
@DavidCarlisle I suggest you take this up with the CTAN team :-)
@ArthurReutenauer I think I have a plan for the tex.ac.uk business

8:18 AM
@JosephWright I'm happy to mail ctan but I think I'll mail latex team first:-)

@DavidCarlisle OK

@JosephWright URL?

@DavidCarlisle uk.tug.org

@JosephWright seems like it, home page says you are fixing issues but sidebar links work that I tried

@DavidCarlisle Yes: issue is that I had to sort some SQL stuff manually and somehow the post categories got fried. Not sure I can be bothered to fix that!
@DavidCarlisle Same here :-)

We need to somehow get the awareness, that report and maybe book are sufficient for a basic report (bachelor, master, Diplom, Phd, ...); with additional optional packages to ease some special tasks.
@EnthusiasticStudent Delete the aux file and try again.

looks like you have an aux file from a document using pgf

9:26 AM
@JosephWright Works for me!

@ArthurReutenauer Good
@ArthurReutenauer Next step is to sort tex.ac.uk

@JosephWright Looking forward to hearing it - I was found to suggest to try and extend the registration for, say, five years, that may help our case.

@ArthurReutenauer Registration is always for only two years on anything in the .uk TLD

Anybody looking at the Video Tutorial about LaTeX? Markus Kohm wrote a review on his website. komascript.de/node/1938

@ArthurReutenauer Certainly JISC make this clear: two years tops
@Johannes_B He doesn't like them
@ArthurReutenauer My current plan to to redirect to a new server: one is already in place

9:31 AM
@JosephWright Who of us does?
Oh no, looking at the review is like a spoiler. I have to watch the videos. That sarcastic writing of Markus is great.

@Johannes_B Like I said, he really doesn't like them, does he

@JosephWright Course not. He was the first writing a blog post about bad templates tha i personally linked many times. But i have to say, it is much much worse in the german speaking world. LaTeX-Templates.com is predictable. But german users find stuff i sometimes can't believe/.
Autocomplete in a tutorial for beginners. :-( Annoying.
Achja: Es heißt weder »inpu-tenc« noch »font-tenc«! Markus Kohm.

10:06 AM
@Johannes_B thanks, solved.
:22559172

@EnthusiasticStudent Nice to hear :-)

@DavidCarlisle thanks, solved.
@Johannes_B I was afraid a little, because about five minutes earlier than facing that failure, I updated all my TeXlive packages; and I was afraid I did something wrong in my update process. By the way, thank you so much. You are always kind to me.

@Johannes_B perhaps some of the sarcasm doesn't survive google translate:-)
@EnthusiasticStudent i noticed you had today's latex release:-)

@DavidCarlisle Maybe not. But he also had some good words. Not everything seems to be bad.

@Johannes_B he had some complicated german words that google didn't know. Shocking I thought it knew everything.

10:10 AM
@DavidCarlisle Maybe they were made up? Do you have an example of such a complicated word?

@Johannes_B i could go back and re-translate, just noticed that there were one or two words that didn't look very english in the result. Was understandable enough anyway.

@DavidCarlisle Yes, latex was also updated for me during texlive update... Why this error happened? Do other users also face such thing? What part of update causes such error?

@EnthusiasticStudent hey don't blame me:-) it's unrelated to the update. You used the same filename for two documents

@DavidCarlisle :)) so how did you notice that I had recent update?

@EnthusiasticStudent see the log you post above, just before the error it says (./untitled-1.aux which means it has started to read the aux file and finds an undefined command, but the comand is \pgf... but your document does not load pgf package.
@EnthusiasticStudent it starts <2015/01/01> patch level 1 which went to ctan yesterday and reached texlive this morning

10:16 AM
@DavidCarlisle Aha... thanks...

@EnthusiasticStudent see the starred comment on the right from earlier today:-)

@DavidCarlisle let me see...
@DavidCarlisle Is this update related to what included in the 2015/01/01 newsletter of the latex-project.org? latex-project.org/ltnews
They have same date...

@DavidCarlisle Perhaps not: it's pretty clear in the original
@EnthusiasticStudent It's a patch for that release which fixes a few mistakes on the part of the team
@EnthusiasticStudent We are still working out a release policy in these days of online updates: the kernel used to be altered very rarely but then updates where much harder

@JosephWright Today I saw the answers package for the first time. It is great. And I felt really proud to see your name on the first page of its manual. I really appreciate your activities on latex...

@EnthusiasticStudent That one has my name on it essentially for licensing reasons (someone had to pick it up to allow it to stay in TL)

10:41 AM
@DavidCarlisle Imho (but I haven't really analyzed it) because you are using two math families. In standard tex italic correction in math is connected to font family switches. to quote Dan Luecking (tug.org/pipermail/tex-live/2011-October/030308.html): "If two adjacent symbols are from the same family and if also \fontdimen2 is not 0, then no italic correction is used, but ligature and kerning information are used."

@EnthusiasticStudent well it's a patch release on that fixing bugs see changes.txt in the release

@DavidCarlisle That's what I said :-)

For no reason, quack! :)

@UlrikeFischer yes so something else is needed, but I'm far from convinced that should be catcodes:-) but need to look further in to this

@PauloCereda A DUCK!

10:46 AM
@JosephWright so you did, I was away from machine:-)

@JosephWright <3 Good morning! :)

@DavidCarlisle Neither is Taco, it seems, but that did not actually make much difference
@DavidCarlisle, @ArthurReutenauer I've emailed Trinity to see if I can get a room: I've asked for the airy one but we may yet end up in the dungeon again

@JosephWright Do they have comfy chairs? :)

@PauloCereda Not that comfy
@PauloCereda Did I not show you the 'tour' via Skype?

@JosephWright I think we had a quick overview in 2012. :)

10:49 AM
@PauloCereda Perhaps
@PauloCereda Looking over the UK-TUG stats (website rebuild): I see your Arara video is on 87 views :-)

@JosephWright Oh no! :)

@PauloCereda @DavidCarlisle is winning: 136 views

@JosephWright naturally

@JosephWright Not fair, he had just an emacs buffer opened. :)

% you should never, ever, use the standards out-of-the-box T1 fonts with pdfLaTeX, they look ugly.Always include the "lmodern" or "pslatex" package, that uses much better postscript fonts.
Nice. :-)

10:52 AM
@Johannes_B I agree: everyone should use my packages!
2

@DavidCarlisle :-)

@Johannes_B Oh for goodness sake

@JosephWright It could be worse, it could be Papyrus. :)

11:08 AM
@JosephWright I could ask Murray about this italic correction business, he (and his team) are basically responsible for the opentype math table so should be able to give an authoritative answer on when they expect italic correction to be used.
@JosephWright might mean constructing an example in Word...

@DavidCarlisle I think that would be a good idea, although I assume Hans also talks to Murray about these issues
@DavidCarlisle Doesn't seem a problem to me
@DavidCarlisle As long as it uses a font where the problem shows
@DavidCarlisle I see we've uncovered a hidden 'feature' of the CTAN upload form

@JosephWright yes but making word do anything is a problem for me, I'm not sure yet if I would be trying to make the problem occur in word, or finding it doesn't occur and then asking why not. (I have a phone call with Murray every month, or at least there is a phone call every month and we are both usually on it...
@JosephWright not for the first time, still seems to be resolved amicably. I do wish they could find a way to let authors see the catalogue entries for their own software.

Q: Computation in Incomplete LaTeX Tables?

MasiI use Pandoc tables in my incomplete LaTeX documents. I do computation on those tables with the field separator as pipe. Raw data ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Size | File | EventSize | W.Events | ID | HeaderSize | ffff | ...

Does anyone understand this even after the edit?

@JosephWright he seems to be asking how to edit away the dashes so perl or python it's basically unrelated to latex as far as I can see other than that he wants to generate pandoc input (I think) Off topic, definitely

@JosephWright incomplete LaTeX table -> pandoc table, that will be converted to LaTeX in the end. He wants to do computation on the table, which means loosing the dashed needed for Pandoc to create a table in LaTeX. Off topic.
Almost tempted to say Use excel
Well, this is how i understood the question.
@JosephWright @DavidCarlisle CTAN-ANN says the package is from 2017 ;-)

@Johannes_B <sigh>

12:44 PM
@JosephWright I guess you know what i meant by the package.

@JosephWright I saw the related discussion on the pandoc mailing list. It could be that wants to know if some data manipulation/calculations can be done with latex. But imho one would need hours to extract a sensible problem description from him (in between there seem to be also some html involved).

@UlrikeFischer Certainly the question as it stands is unclear

1:12 PM
@JosephWright Fixed up in the dev version of unicode-math; thanks.
@JosephWright — also just realised I'd been using @@ notation in unicode-math without loading l3docstrip instead of the original :)

One about expl3, is there any plan of “standardizing” 0pt plus 0pt minus 0pt? I mean, something like \skip:n { 0pt }, \skip:nnn { 0pt } { 0pt } { 0pt } and \skip_plus:nn { 0pt } { 0pt } and \skip_minus:nn { 0pt } { 0pt }?

@JosephWright I bet @stefan has a bit cooler weather on the coast.

@Johannes_B Possibly

@JosephWright you pass the test.

@DavidCarlisle :-)

@JosephWright "things to try before going to induction week at big school..."

@egreg -- yes, i do remember the discussion. but have to go back and check the details. (i don't remember whether the situation of d^2x was covered, for one thing.) what would you like to point out?

4:07 PM
@Johannes_B -- i've looked back at a couple of articles in tugboat on thesis classes. while everything i've looked at is clear about "follow the instructions of your university regarding the style", none of them gives a clear pointer to a basic class in the absence of an (approved) document class from your university. i think that's what's missing. and report or book is probably as good a place to start as any. (although i admit my bias against the "national enquirer" style of headings.)
not sure where the best place is to start to issue a "corrective", or at least a counter-argument. might be put on the topic list for discussion in darmstadt.

@barbarabeeton Exactly where mi mind got stuck yesterday, where/how to get this fallback information distributed. You cannot get in touch with every university telling them: If you don't have a template to satisfy your university laylout, tell the people to use the base classes.

@PauloCereda -- oh ... i read that (quickly) as a "quack overview".
@Johannes_B -- complicating matters even more, not every university even recognizes that latex exists, never mind providing for its use. i nearly cried when i saw the question a while ago that asked where someone could get a credit course for latex. that's probably never going to happen; the best one might hope for is a rather informal "tutorial" group meeting at lunch time for some number of successive weeks, one day a week, or maybe something at a community college or extension division.
@DavidCarlisle -- why in the world would you want to do that? (the chemical reaction is much the same as what happens when you put buttermilk and baking soda into a flour mixture so that you end up with something "lighter" than library paste. both are capable of making a big mess.)

4:35 PM
@barbarabeeton Our university provides classes and packages for reports, official letters, posters, presentations and lab reports, to apply to the corporate design. We also have a few user meetings each semester, where users can come and have a drink, or ask a question.
And i am not even the maintainer of the classes :-)

@Johannes_B -- the german-speaking world seems to be much more supportive in this regard than the u.s. (for example). just as there are more, and more active, dante members (per capita) than tug members in the u.s. i have my ideas about why, but am not ready to publish them.

@barbarabeeton Quack. :)

@barbarabeeton I am a DANTE member. Get the little magazine each quarter with nice articles, the DVD with the coloured paper thingy around. And i know that my dues are spend on useful projects. Why not give something back?

4:52 PM
@JosephWright So that's one of the few things that will be untouched and be like in original plain TeX. Just out of curiosity, what more other things are probably going to be just the TeX way? Why not try to standardize those plus and minuses?

5:04 PM
scared. Running a TL update and a system update. Let's see how high the temp gets.

@barbarabeeton Just that it's possible to avoid the italic correction, if one wants to. However one loses the kerning with the following letter. :( That's why a special symbol is better.

User asks in Spanish. I, thinking I'm doing a favor, translate to English. User replies he prefers Spanish!

Q: How can I rotate some pages keeping the same header/footer sequence as the other pages?

Arnold FernándezIn order to facilitate reading, I'm trying to rotate some specific pages containing tables or images which are wider than \textwidth. How can I achieve this? Translated from Spanish by Gonzalo Medina

If he decides he wants to keep the Spanish text (though I already explained to him that the main language here is English), what should be done with the question?

5:23 PM
@GonzaloMedina I would need to say it is unclear, since i don't speack spanish.

@barbarabeeton you are not an 11 year old boy: big mess is the main aim.

@egreg -- i don't disagree with this. but if it's requested from unicode, they're going to reject it. also, at the moment, different fonts treat the math italic "d" differently, and until that's straightened out, other attempts are kind of moot.

@Johannes_B Yes, that's what I thought. Let's wait and hope that the OP decides to keep the English version.

@GonzaloMedina When i just read your spanish comment, in myy head you had the voice of Gustavo Fran from Breaking Bad. :-)

@DavidCarlisle -- on the other hand, an 11-year-old boy has his father (or at least somebody else) to clean up after him. (but it's a fun experiment, i agree.)

5:29 PM
@GonzaloMedina Ins't what he wants the standard behaviour when using packages like rotating or pdflscape?

@Johannes_B Most probably, yes. The thing that is not clear (and it wasn't clear in the original Spanish question either) is what does he want to do with the headers/footers. The title of the question mentions them, but then in the body of the question there's no mention to them.
@Johannes_B No idea who he is, but he must be a really cool guy if I made you remember him ;-)

@GonzaloMedina I know two TV series where the spanish is kept and they use subtitles, that is Dexter and Breaking Bad. But calling him a cool guy? Maybe cool killer.

By the way, today I had a nice tour across two new (for me) mountain passes in the Dolomites. Gorgeous day (albeit hot when below 1000m).

5:46 PM
@barbarabeeton actually no need, outside on the drive, I'm sure a bit of vinegar won't hurt, canister got to about 6 feet:-)

LaTeX-Team: Is there any chance of adding adding unnumbered chapters to toc, something like KOMA's \addchap to classes.dtx?. It is asked so very very often, and many users use \addcontentsline wrong, getting wrong page numbers. Please at least consider it for the first generic L3-classes.
@PauloCereda A quiz to make compilaton go by shorter?

@Johannes_B Or make the user suffer. :)

@PauloCereda Strange thing is, few users will recognize the names. :-(

@DavidCarlisle -- what do kids do whose parents are too young to have old film canisters lying around -- or even to know what a film canister is? also, i think the results might be different if using a plastic vs. metal film canister. (in either case, get out of the way quickly!)

@barbarabeeton they have parents who go to a camera shop and blag a few old ones:-)
@Johannes_B yes/no/perhaps. probably not. (in the standard 2e ones)

@DavidCarlisle -- "blag", new word for me. = "scrounge", i think.

@barbarabeeton sorry, I forgot English was not your first language.
@barbarabeeton I suppose 5th meaning here but not quite that sense..

Apr 29 '14 at 8:59, by David Carlisle
@PauloCereda Never learn grammar from an Englishman.

@DavidCarlisle -- ah, something more like "midnight requisition".
@PauloCereda -- ah, but here we've descended into the fine points of slang vocabulary.

7:16 PM
@barbarabeeton I suspect in this case it was more like "have you got any old canisters please" but blag sounded better

@barbarabeeton ooh I wonder if David knows Cockney Rhyming Slang. :)

@DavidCarlisle -- then that is precisely "scrounge". (oh, and my previous rephrasing was a bit off. should have been "moonlight requisition".)

@barbarabeeton yes
@PauloCereda I don't think the sound of Bow bells reaches all the way to nottinghamshire

@DavidCarlisle Lor' luv a duck! I can't believe.
@barbarabeeton: oh my, is this a real expression? link

@JosephWright Oh I was going to invite her to join us, do not worry. :)

Q: How maintainers/developers of TeX LaTeX packages benefit from their volunteer work?

Enthusiastic StudentI am a user of LaTeX for about two years and I can see that almost every package which exists for TeX are free and these packages are maintained perfectly; packages are updated regularly and new packages or classes are developed when needed. Why people do such volunteer work? How do they benefit...

@Johannes_B I suspect so

8:21 PM
@Johannes_B no!

@EnthusiasticStudent But the reasoning and rewards are very different within the community. So no answer could be taking everything and everyone into account, or if so, it would be very very long. At least i guess so, the answer you want to have could be quite simple as well.
@clemens Now, since the forum exists, and already has three users. Should i send anybody to this new locale on purpose? Or answer the question (if i can) and mention your forum?

If community decides to close it, I never oppose. But, we have similar questions like that one which seem to be opinion based but received good answers. Look at this:

Q: How can I explain the meaning of LaTeX to my grandma?

Stefan KottwitzI wrote a book about LaTeX, and my proud grandma wanted to have a copy. So she got it, said "What a beautiful picture on the cover!" and - "What is this, LaTeX?". She doesn't know Word, never used a computer. But she reads books. How can I explain what makes TeX and LaTeX special to a non-techni...

And of course, never closed.

@EnthusiasticStudent That is the problem, we never play strictly by the rules. Strictly speaking, that should be closed as well. There are several of those questions.
@EnthusiasticStudent So far, there isn't close vote ;-)

@Johannes_B If in the next few days, my question does not receive good answers, I myself will ask moderators to delete it. I really like this site and I want it to be always perfect.

@EnthusiasticStudent There will never be perfection ;-) But we have an event starting in half an hour to answer some old questions, that never got any attention before. And to clear the list of unanswered of a few questions, that cannot be answered. Feel free to join :-)

8:31 PM
@Johannes_B Indeed
@Johannes_B You can work on them at any time :-)

@JosephWright You know i do ;-)

@Johannes_B Indeed

@Johannes_B You guys are already perfect and I always appreciate you. I do not have enough knowledge of TeX to solve problems here, but I will be here to enjoy your event.

@EnthusiasticStudent Ah, but you probably do
@EnthusiasticStudent Quite a lot of the work is looking for older questions where we gave them time to be improved and that didn't happen

@EnthusiasticStudent I remember my first weeks here. Could not comment on questions to ask for details because i didn't have the rep. Finally, i found a question that i could answer, got enough reputation (iirc) to comment other questions. But the tick went to @egreg :-)
@clemens @PauloCereda You guys have a bit of experience typesetting songs, maybe you can add something useful? tex.stackexchange.com/questions/187062/…

8:37 PM
@Johannes_B So if one easy question found, pass it to me! :)) I feel like a child who is starting to learn writing in front of you...

@EnthusiasticStudent Sadly, the possiblity of finding an easy question is quite low. They are answered quickly. Most of the stuff we will dig up will be either not answerable, or nobody has taken care of it yet, so no. The first bunch gets closed after consideration. The last bunch keeps staying, and staying. And staying.

@Johannes_B I used that package (songs) quite some time ago, I will see what I can do.

@Johannes_B the whole event is so productive and helpful to the site...

@EnthusiasticStudent What is your favourite tag? use the search like this: [templates] duplicate:0 answers:0 closed:0 Change templates to the tag you think you know a bit and have a look at the questions.
@EnthusiasticStudent If somebody joins in ;-) But the good thing is, you can browse and answer unanswered questions at any time.

@Johannes_B my favorite one is pgfplots, beamer and amsmaths

8:43 PM
@Johannes_B If that question doesn’t get closed, I have a few comments that I think may sound interesting, and I think people might want to hear them, but I’m afraid all of them will be rude :-/

@Johannes_B yes of course I try to answer unanswered, but as you said, easy ones usually get answers really fast. But I do my best to learn from the answered ones too...

@ArthurReutenauer Once it got an answer, there is (imho) no need to close a question. Except for duplicates or really off-topic questions that fit better on another site.
@ArthurReutenauer The rude business is another things. Maybe rephrasing will be a good idea ;-)

@Johannes_B I don’t mean literally rude; I just mean it will sound like I hate users all over the world.
@Johannes_B I’m pretty drunk, I think I should let you know.

@ArthurReutenauer Well you do do development so ...
@ArthurReutenauer Ah, in that case perhaps wait until tomorrow

@ArthurReutenauer I am not the one who starred that (yet), but Prost! :-)

8:48 PM
@Johannes_B For some reason I decided I should get drunk tonight, so I’ll wait until tomorrow.

@ArthurReutenauer Maybe a good idea. ;-)

@ArthurReutenauer Tomorrow there may be a headache

@Johannes_B Thanks. 9 pints so far; I estimate it takes me 15 pints to get really drunk, so we’ll see. I’ll keep you informed :-P
@StefanKottwitz No, not with 9 pints. English ale is pretty light.

@ArthurReutenauer who or what was bugging you today?

@StefanKottwitz No one. I just thought I’d like to get drunk.

8:53 PM
@ArthurReutenauer Sometimes a man has to do,what a man has to do. ;-)

@ArthurReutenauer cold ale with this hot weather may be fine

@Johannes_B You probably still don't know what the OT2 font encoding is about. ;-)

@ArthurReutenauer You're not William Hague really, are you?

@JosephWright No; if I was anything pretending to be a politician, I would be Al Murray ;-)
@Johannes_B Yep :-D

@ArthurReutenauer Fair enough

8:56 PM
@StefanKottwitz Ale is not supposed to be served cold. But I’ll survive it.

@egreg A bit before my time, i think. Would advice anybody to use that buggy new engines for using non-latin scripts :-p

@ArthurReutenauer I'm fine with a cold dark beer, currently.

@egreg Did you just upvote my first answer?

@Johannes_B Yes, I forgot to do it at the time. ;-)
@Johannes_B But the language is Serbian, not Russian. :P

8:59 PM
@egreg You got one from me as well, a few minutes ago ;-)
