@cfr: my cat Ciça is pregnant! Expect cute kittens in the upcoming weeks! :)

@PauloCereda Awww.... ;). (I take it it is not 'Oh, no!' which would be the reaction of most people here.)

@cfr <3

rootless sounds evil...
Speaking of evil, if anybody knows any good ways to access Office365 email from a Linux box, please, please do tell me. Access is limited to MS Exchange (i.e. no POP or IMAP) and Exchange encryption is being enforced for all staff accounts next month. [Normally, I think encryption is Good. But I assume it will be Extremely Evil in this case, even if i don't know quite how yet.]
At least, there was IMAP but they turned it off on Monday and now I can't read email....

1:05 AM
@cfr Web access is OK?
@cfr: if you want to configure Thunderbird, Evolution, KMail or other mail program, I think this page might help: support.office.com/en-nz/article/…

cfr
1:48 AM
@PauloCereda It should work, yes. I just loath the web interface. It is horrible.
@PauloCereda Thanks! Unfortunately, that page assumes that POP and/or IMAP is switched on on the server, but my institution has just switched it off. I did have Thunderbird configured to read mail from Office365 just fine (well, for 1 out of 2 accounts anyway). But that, indeed, used IMAP. I should probably look at Evolution. I have heard that it might be able to work even without POP/IMAP.

@cfr There's an add-on for Thunderbird (not free: £7 per year, will check name at work) that can do it transparently, or you can use DavMail to run a local IMAP/SMTP where it fetches using the EWS protocol (DavMail is free).
@cfr We've just had the same switch but do have IMAP/SMTP enabled: I'd have thought this was a general Office365 thing

yo'
6:11 AM
@cfr oh no! :-(

6:45 AM
@cfr Originally when we move to Exchange from a proper mail server, our IT people took the attitude "Outlook or web access only", but that got modified I think when it became clear it was unworkable.

@egreg I could disable sffamily and issue a warning/error for this example. Or use a different (serif) font, a bit like the use of Schwabacher inside Fraktur to make stuff different. All that would be a bit much for just a titlepage in which no sffamily is used.

@cfr I use thunderbird/imap but this looks like it's a free addon that should work via the ews interface: techrepublic.com/blog/smb-technologist/…

10:34 AM
@DavidCarlisle Not sure about the encrypted mail part [I'd just say 'use PGP/EnigMail' :-)]
@DavidCarlisle That's not free: exquilla.zendesk.com/entries/… (it is the one I was thinking of and am currently testing out)

@JosephWright ah it didn't mention money on that page, oh well.

@DavidCarlisle Seems to have an issue sending plain text emails: adds =0A= to each line (contrast sending via SMTP, which I can do)
@DavidCarlisle Like I said, it is cheap

Does anyone here happen to have knowledge on the fashion in which glyphs are read into TeX font metrics? Is a character/glyph allowed to have an irresponsible large height?
It seems like the ascenders are not scanned correctly in the conversion from opentype to font metrics.... but I don't know

@1010011010 no idea but I'd be surprised if it looks at the glyph shapes at all, isn't it just taking the metric information from the opentype file and expressing it as tfm?

@DavidCarlisle That's what I thought...

10:46 AM
@1010011010 if you're using opentype you really should give up with tfm and use xetex:-)

@DavidCarlisle That won't matter, since it doesn't work either.
I edited a single glyph and almost every single font management tool shows something different for that glyph (updated, not updated, etc.)
The font itself is fully functional..
I tried with XeTeX, font shows the wrong glyph as well. Can't tell what's going on.

@1010011010 presumably your edit was wrong:-) (or it isn't using the font you think it is, if it has several copies in the search path, which isn't unknown)

11:11 AM
@DavidCarlisle I've tried reproducing the issue with somebody from GD, but failed

11:28 AM
I have three systems, all windows, and none of them could edit the font like the guy on GraphicDesign said he could, so yeah that's that then? :-)

1 hour later…
12:56 PM
@barbarabeeton blame Leslie:-)

@DavidCarlisle What did he do now?

@DavidCarlisle -- that's certainly peculiar. i don't think i've ever seen a semicolon in a bibliography except in a title, and that's really the wrong place to have an extra-wide space. stretched spaces should best occur at "logical" breaks -- between author(s) and title, between title and publication info, etc. if it weren't for the way most bibliographic processors wipe out such useful information, a more constrained approach could be applied. (of course, there's always ragged right.) — barbara beeton 19 mins ago

My train is in the station, the train in the opposite direction is in the station. So why are we still waiting?!

@yo' Maybe the train will go backwards. :)

yo'
@PauloCereda well, we've got a 15-minute delay at least, and I have a 5-minute change at 4pm (in 1 hour). I doubt we'll make it :-(

1:14 PM
@yo' :(

yo'
@PauloCereda yeah. The connecting train is so far scheduled without delay, so it looks bad :-( I can only hope it'll wait for me

@cfr -- don't know whether anything but imap can save you. i'm keeping my fingers crossed here; the only reason imap is still available is because some key person has to travel, and uses a blackberry, and can't read mail otherwise. try to find some such person (somebody in the administration would be a good candidate) and have that person complain. folks in the trenches don't count, unfortunately.

Ciça is in her nest!

yo'
1:31 PM
ok, I gotta save some battery time of my notebook in case I get stuck at Budweis station. See you later!

@yo' Good luck, Tom! <3

@JosephWright One for your decision tex.stackexchange.com/questions/249384/…

3:54 PM
@Johannes_B Unclear

the MacTeX support says "You can find a complete list of files installed by double clicking on the MacTEX-2015 pack- age and then choosing the menu item “Show Files”."
is that referring to the installer?

@GBeau Yes

Time to redownload the installer, then :P

cfr
4:44 PM
@JosephWright Really hope they figure that out soon here. The annoying thing is that when we first switched, IMAP was enabled. But the new Exchange has it disabled by default, apparently. davmail was the option I was looking at. Or evolution. davmail looks kind of complex to set up but might be worth it if I can figure it out.

cfr
4:54 PM
@JosephWright Me, too. But this is MS so, of course, it is something different. It is something done on the Exchange server, as I understand it. I'm not sure yet what it is or what purpose it serves as they are rather short on details. I just know it is going to be 'switched on' so any solution has to deal with that.

Seems there is a reason for all TUG members to stay in Germany. Richard Stallman will give two speaches in Frankfurt in July. ffsci.de/index.php?id=6

@cfr DavMail is pretty easy to set up, really, at least for the basic mail part (LDAP more complex)

Hi all

@Alenanno Hello

@JosephWright What's up? (Please don't say "the sky") :D

Q: Removing double punctuation when SI units with dots occur at the end of a sentence

E.P.I'm writing a document that uses a mix of SI and atomic units. The latter are usually written in the slightly awkward notation p = 1 a.u. with dots and all. (I know, it's not great, but what can I do?) Since I'm using SI units, I would like to use a cohesive approach to units throughout, vi...

I'm not sure what can be said here: I do know about the set up inside siunitx and this is not workable

Not my area of expertise. :P

@Alenanno Indeed
@Alenanno I'm wondering who other than me can make a comment on the question!

Hey @TorbjørnT. my last question was not sarcastic by the way (just FYI). If there are indeed cases where a figure environment is not advisable with a figure, then I'd like to know which ones.

yo'
5:25 PM
@PauloCereda I of course missed the train by 5 minutes :-( Some motherF stole train signalling wiring to get couple bucks from them for the copper :-(

@Alenanno I didn't say I interpreted it that way, I said it *could* be interpreted that way. But now I'm just being difficult, and I realize that my comment did take things a bit to extreme. Sorry about that. (I do think that anything that is said that is not completely clear *will* be interpreted by those hearing it, consciously or not. But that's a different discussion altogether.)

I didn't think of your last question as sarcastic. It depends on where that figure is placed and/or the structure of the document. Generally speaking:

@TorbjørnT. Don't worry, no problem! :D Ah I see. I didn't think of those cases. You have a point.

yo'
so they say I should be happy for "only" 90 minutes of delay; some people got much more.

6:03 PM
@yo' I am lost. What did I miss?
Why don't I seem to be able to get the .iso image for TeX Live2015 from the CTAN mirrors? I only see the iso.md5 and iso.sha256 files (I checked in three different mirrors from the official list).

@GonzaloMedina -- i haven't gone looking for the new tex live, but i do know that the announcement on the tug web page was posted before the ctan mirrors had a chance to catch up; even, perhaps, before the files were completely live on the main host. (there was an apology to that effect on the tex live mailing list this morning.) so don't despair; please be patient and try again in a couple of days.

cfr
6:32 PM
@JosephWright In that case, I'll have a go. You don't happen to know if it supports this Exchange encryption stuff, do you? Otherwise, I'll just have to read some documentation... ;).
@barbarabeeton The net installer seemed to work fine. But I always forget that it needs extra disk space for the installation (i.e. more than the completed installation needs).

@barbarabeeton I see. Thanks. I normally install the pre-release test version, but this year I didn't have the time and I had to wait until now. I'll try again in a couple of days.

cfr
@JosephWright By the way, I taught the second latex workshop this week, including a couple of bits from the UK TUG stuff (which were not covered by the description of the previous workshop). This one was messier, basically, because I got 'I don't really want to know about X' and 'Can you explain how to use Y?' and people somehow thinking that 'Y would be useful to everybody' when it was far from obvious that Y would be any such thing :(. And one person again whose English just seems very poor...
@barbarabeeton They've got instructions up for Blackberry. (Which is the officially supported mobile device although I don't actually know a single person who has one. Presumably, people in admin.) So presumably, Blackberry doesn't depend on IMAP, unfortunately.

@cfr That's what makes teaching such a funny activity ;-)

cfr
@GonzaloMedina I think it would be better to split the second workshop, really, so that people could attend sessions specific to their interests e.g. not do the beamer one if they are happy with PowerPoint.

@cfr When I teach my LaTeX course, I focus on general aspects useful for "everyone". In the inter-semestral period I give some "specialized" lectures and people can decide if they're interested in the topics offered, so they can choose whether or not to attend.

6:44 PM
@cfr -- i suppose i could be wrong about imap; perhaps it's smtp that's involved. whatever, i am still able to run alpine on a linux box, which is a blessing, because outlook often corrupts in-line tex code (at least the way i've included it when forced to use outlook directly, or the way it's been received from outside). if nobody else comes up with something that can help you, i'll see what i can find out. one thing does differ, however -- we're not forced into compulsory encryption.

cfr
7:04 PM
@barbarabeeton Alpine is really my favourite email client, even though I'm using Thunderbird. I haven't looked into the encryption yet. They didn't mention it in the email to users - local IT told me about it so I wouldn't spend time on a solution which won't work for more than a few weeks. They said the information they'd been given included essentially no technical details i.e. up to the usual helpful standards of such communications. ['Local' means school-based rather than central university.]
@GonzaloMedina Yes. That sounds sensible. The workshop descriptions were put together by somebody else. I made a couple of minor suggestions but largely have been teaching according to the existing model. Now I've done that, it is not clear to me that it is the best one. This is very unlike other teaching I do, though, and the person who designed them is in the CS department so I'm not sure how open they will be to my suggestions....

@cfr We had that with one person who'd used TeX before so was asking about DVI mode, which we deliberately avoid
@barbarabeeton We've moved to Office 365 but with IMAP/SMTP turned on (they tried to turn it off on our internal Exchange server: there was trouble!)

cfr
@JosephWright I was about to ask what SVI mode was.... I had some people from the first workshop and some who were already using LaTeX. Very, very mixed and a bit tricky. Somebody wanted to know about working with 'templates' and I tried working with the university thesis template they gave me. However, I ended up telling them that, if it were me, I wouldn't use it and it would be easier to start from scratch. Nobody seems to know who maintains it, though.
Most of them seemed reasonably happy, but each person thought some subject X was of little interest. If they all agreed this for the same X, life would be a lot simpler....

@JosephWright do you know why comments can be up-voted but not down-voted?

@GonzaloMedina Comments are meant to be 'throw away' and anything 'bad' is meant to be removed. Voting on questions/answers is meant to be much more about showing quality, on comments it's not intended to be anything like as important.

@GonzaloMedina If you want to read a (rather long) discussion about this: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/3615/…

7:20 PM
@JosephWright @TorbjørnT. Thanks.

@cfr That's why we've stuck to a rigid format to date!
@cfr At least you didn't have someone try to start writing your thesis during the session: we had that the first time we ran a course

Back from my tour (and dinner). What did I miss?

@cfr -- what about making a general list of topics that might be covered, and asking participants up front who is not interested in each of them. (an example or two of situations in which each topic might be useful could possibly change some minds.)

@egreg We surely missed you, but I'm pretty sure you didn't miss anything.

@GonzaloMedina :) I went to check Brunelleschi's dome. It's still there. :)

Guys, i just did tlmgr update --self and i am now updating 284 package of my TL2014, which i guess will be a TL 2015. Can anybody confirm that this really works?

8:36 PM
@Johannes_B: A clean fresh install is perhaps the better way

@ChristianHupfer I'll do it once i did a complete reinstall of the OS ;-)

@Johannes_B Reinstall of the OS? Never change a running system ...

@ChristianHupfer A patchy Ubuntu 14.04.
@ChristianHupfer Right, now everything is lagging. I don't even can type fluently.

@Johannes_B: I am still running OpenSuSE 12.3 here on my workstation, for four years now.

@ChristianHupfer But this creepy Ubuntu is getting on my nerves.
Load 8.79

8:45 PM
@Johannes_B: Ezechiel 25,17 is funnier than Load 8.79 ;-)

2 hours later…
10:30 PM
Are TeX font metrics all vector-style or are they just fancy'd up bitmaps?
graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/a/54938/37440 suggests TeX uses bitmap strikes
@egreg What kind of tour are we talking about here? :-)

@1010011010 My usual summertime saturday motorbike tour across Italy and neighboring countries.

@egreg I was going to say... 580 km by bike is rather ambitious :-)

@1010011010 I can do better. ;-) Have you ever been to Florence?

@egreg Almost a decade ago... I was a kid back then... heh

@1010011010 Well, I went there today! :P

10:43 PM
If I hadn't so many academic obligations, Florence would be very high up the list for holiday destinations. So did you actually make a stop in Florence or did you just pass by?

@1010011010 I made a short stop at Piazzale Michelangelo, a very panoramic point where you have the whole city before you.
@1010011010 Of course I visited Florence several times; I also lived there for some months as a postgraduate student.

@egreg That sounds amazing.

cfr
11:31 PM
@JosephWright Why would they start trying to write my thesis? I do have nightmares in which I've not finished it, but I'm pretty sure I at least started it...
@barbarabeeton And if they don't change their minds? To be honest, it isn't terribly clear to me that there is a really good argument for using beamer rather than PowerPoint, for example. Presentations are highly visual and, unless you need lots of maths or logic, it is not clear to me that there is a great case for beamer. I use it, but I suspect it is quite inefficient. However, I've never produced a presentation using anything but a latex package....
@JosephWright It seemed harder to do that at the second workshop because some people came with really specific things they wanted to find out or do. (And were naturally sure that whatever they really wanted covered would obviously be of much more use to everybody than the material I was - and was supposed to be - covering.)

@cfr Do you happen to know if any glyphs in TeX are bitmap or vector strikes?
Or what it pays attention to?
when doing the conversion

11:57 PM
@clemens When clicking on Post comment on mychemistry my browser tries to open wp-comments-post.php. Is that localized to my machine? Do you have any idea how to fix it?
@clemens Fot the record, that was supposed to be my comment:
Concerning the list of reactions: No, never used it in my own documents. But i have given advice on how to use it in support a few times.

But the changes above are <em>quite</em> a few.
