Speaking of evil, if anybody knows any good ways to access Office365 email from a Linux box, please, please do tell me. Access is limited to MS Exchange (i.e. no POP or IMAP) and Exchange encryption is being enforced for all staff accounts next month. [Normally, I think encryption is Good. But I assume it will be Extremely Evil in this case, even if i don't know quite how yet.]

At least, there was IMAP but they turned it off on Monday and now I can't read email....

@PauloCereda Thanks! Unfortunately, that page assumes that POP and/or IMAP is switched on on the server, but my institution has just switched it off. I did have Thunderbird configured to read mail from Office365 just fine (well, for 1 out of 2 accounts anyway). But that, indeed, used IMAP. I should probably look at Evolution. I have heard that it might be able to work even without POP/IMAP.

@cfr There's an add-on for Thunderbird (not free: £7 per year, will check name at work) that can do it transparently, or you can use DavMail to run a local IMAP/SMTP where it fetches using the EWS protocol (DavMail is free).

@cfr Originally when we move to Exchange from a proper mail server, our IT people took the attitude "Outlook or web access only", but that got modified I think when it became clear it was unworkable.

@egreg I could disable sffamily and issue a warning/error for this example. Or use a different (serif) font, a bit like the use of Schwabacher inside Fraktur to make stuff different. All that would be a bit much for just a titlepage in which no sffamily is used.

Does anyone here happen to have knowledge on the fashion in which glyphs are read into TeX font metrics? Is a character/glyph allowed to have an irresponsible large height?

It seems like the ascenders are not scanned correctly in the conversion from opentype to font metrics.... but I don't know

@1010011010 no idea but I'd be surprised if it looks at the glyph shapes at all, isn't it just taking the metric information from the opentype file and expressing it as tfm?

I edited a single glyph and almost every single font management tool shows something different for that glyph (updated, not updated, etc.)

The font itself is fully functional..

I tried with XeTeX, font shows the wrong glyph as well. Can't tell what's going on.

@1010011010 presumably your edit was wrong:-) (or it isn't using the font you think it is, if it has several copies in the search path, which isn't unknown)

@cfr -- don't know whether anything but imap can save you. i'm keeping my fingers crossed here; the only reason imap is still available is because some key person has to travel, and uses a blackberry, and can't read mail otherwise. try to find some such person (somebody in the administration would be a good candidate) and have that person complain. folks in the trenches don't count, unfortunately.

But the new Exchange has it disabled by default, apparently. davmail was the option I was looking at. Or evolution. davmail looks kind of complex to set up but might be worth it if I can figure it out.

@JosephWright Me, too. But this is MS so, of course, it is something different. It is something done on the Exchange server, as I understand it. I'm not sure yet what it is or what purpose it serves as they are rather short on details. I just know it is going to be 'switched on' so any solution has to deal with that.

Why don't I seem to be able to get the .iso image for TeX Live2015 from the CTAN mirrors? I only see the iso.md5 and iso.sha256 files (I checked in three different mirrors from the official list).

@GonzaloMedina -- i haven't gone looking for the new tex live, but i do know that the announcement on the tug web page was posted before the ctan mirrors had a chance to catch up; even, perhaps, before the files were completely live on the main host. (there was an apology to that effect on the tex live mailing list this morning.) so don't despair; please be patient and try again in a couple of days.

@barbarabeeton The net installer seemed to work fine. But I always forget that it needs extra disk space for the installation (i.e. more than the completed installation needs).

This one was messier, basically, because I got 'I don't really want to know about X' and 'Can you explain how to use Y?' and people somehow thinking that 'Y would be useful to everybody' when it was far from obvious that Y would be any such thing :(. And one person again whose English just seems very poor...

@barbarabeeton They've got instructions up for Blackberry. (Which is the officially supported mobile device although I don't actually know a single person who has one. Presumably, people in admin.) So presumably, Blackberry doesn't depend on IMAP, unfortunately.

@cfr When I teach my LaTeX course, I focus on general aspects useful for "everyone". In the inter-semestral period I give some "specialized" lectures and people can decide if they're interested in the topics offered, so they can choose whether or not to attend.

@cfr -- i suppose i could be wrong about imap; perhaps it's smtp that's involved. whatever, i am still able to run alpine on a linux box, which is a blessing, because outlook often corrupts in-line tex code (at least the way i've included it when forced to use outlook directly, or the way it's been received from outside). if nobody else comes up with something that can help you, i'll see what i can find out. one thing does differ, however -- we're not forced into compulsory encryption.

@barbarabeeton Alpine is really my favourite email client, even though I'm using Thunderbird. I haven't looked into the encryption yet. They didn't mention it in the email to users - local IT told me about it so I wouldn't spend time on a solution which won't work for more than a few weeks. They said the information they'd been given included essentially no technical details i.e. up to the usual helpful standards of such communications. ['Local' means school-based rather than central university.]

@GonzaloMedina Yes. That sounds sensible. The workshop descriptions were put together by somebody else. I made a couple of minor suggestions but largely have been teaching according to the existing model. Now I've done that, it is not clear to me that it is the best one. This is very unlike other teaching I do, though, and the person who designed them is in the CS department so I'm not sure how open they will be to my suggestions....

@JosephWright I was about to ask what SVI mode was.... I had some people from the first workshop and some who were already using LaTeX. Very, very mixed and a bit tricky. Somebody wanted to know about working with 'templates' and I tried working with the university thesis template they gave me. However, I ended up telling them that, if it were me, I wouldn't use it and it would be easier to start from scratch. Nobody seems to know who maintains it, though.

Most of them seemed reasonably happy, but each person thought some subject X was of little interest. If they all agreed this for the same X, life would be a lot simpler....

Presentations are highly visual and, unless you need lots of maths or logic, it is not clear to me that there is a great case for beamer. I use it, but I suspect it is quite inefficient. However, I've never produced a presentation using anything but a latex package....
