2:00 AM
@DavidCarlisle That's a strange song. And a strange video.
But nothing unusual for American popular culture.
Has anyone noticed how rarely the lyrics to pop songs make any sense?

What tag should I use as a stand-in for mailmerge-like functionality? Since the mailmerge tag does not itself exist, presumably intentionally.

6:31 AM
@TorbjørnT. Have you more silly songs this morning? Or wasn't it you?

@1010011010 Not in the habit of posting silly songs, so that probably wasn't me. (I may actually have posted this one once, but that's probably the only one.)

@TorbjørnT. Some would argue that constitute as boring ;-) But no, I guess it was somebody else.
Who could patch me up with some fontforge-related info?

Hi, I just updated to MacTeX 2015 and here is what my tex live utility says: he repository at mirror.switch.ch/mirror/tex/systems/texlive/tlnet has TeX Live 2015, but you have TeX Live 18446744073709551615 installed. You need to switch repositories in order to continue. Any hint?

@1010011010 Perhaps, but it's also quite silly.

@TorbjørnT. Oh, oops, I meant to say "silly". I'm not an early bird, exactly.
I didn't even notice I typed that.
@TorbjørnT. Ah it was Johannes_B. I remember now.
I guess it was the naming resemblance.

7:10 AM
@s__C, I'd wait untill next week for all the mirrors to carry the new versions. Also updates might not start comming until a little later on.

7:58 AM
@egreg Did you see the mail to the OS X list about the new 'rootless' 'feature' in OS X 10.11?
@DavidCarlisle Ready for the LaTeX kernel issues to start appearing?

@JosephWright I'm sure it will be fine.... (no one answered my email about update policies though:-)

@DavidCarlisle Frank's still away, I feel this is one for him (and suspect Bruno and Will are likely too as well)

@JosephWright yes I know:-)

@DavidCarlisle I'm surprised Chris hasn't commented
@DavidCarlisle Of course, as MiKTeX picked up the kernel update a while ago we probably are OK on that score
@DavidCarlisle I've only my own packages and expl3 to work from, and there the release policy is very different!
@DavidCarlisle It doesn't help that we have updated LaTeX in the past using the 'Robin sneaks stuff onto CTAN' approach, which means that the official position and the reality have diverged
TeX Live installation updated to release TL'15 :-)

8:17 AM
@JosephWright yes although complicated by "offical ctan position" being that ctan bundles have dates or versions that increase and we don't really have a date or version for "base" other than the format date which leaves open how to update a core package like latexrelease.sty without changing the format
@JosephWright I think mine is too (I switched mirror from the cz pretest to warrick and it didn't complain, but I got no updates yet:-)

9:00 AM
English speakers: Does one write "there are 5 minutes left" or "there is 5 minutes left"

@daleif 'are'

thanks
People are sloppy ....

9:16 AM
Finally downloading TeXLive 2015

@ChristianHupfer is there a revolutionary change in the 2015 release or something?

@1010011010 yes we switched the underlying formatting engine from tex to ms word. Hopefully though the compatibility layer will mean that no one will notice any real changes.

@1010011010: Yes ... the number changed from 2014 to 2015 ;-) No, seriously. Some (or all?) of the fixltx2e package issues are now in the kernel

@ChristianHupfer all, and extended allocation for etex registers, and xetex/luatex aware defaults for catcodes and upper/lowe case tables.

@DavidCarlisle Don't be silly. MS Word is no formatting engine, it's a formatting Black Hole ... all information is lost and little hope of Gates radiation to get some information back ;-)
@DavidCarlisle Thanks

9:23 AM
@JosephWright Now I did; doesn't seem so difficult. Annoying, of course.
Downloading MacTeX2015. :)

@DavidCarlisle About time... is the randomization of the formatting that MS word offers also included or is that still on the todo list?

Well, back to the analog desktop and blue - penciling graduation exams in Math (Well, red-penciling in Germany actually)

@egreg Can be turned off but that is clearly an expert feature
@egreg I'll probably do a clean install to avoid issues
What is it with people wanting TL'15 in the first 24 h and being surprised that it's not updated yet

@JosephWright: Blame the release announcement... Perhaps the mirrors should be updated, then issue the announcement -- make it available, then talk about it ... a general rule in PR ;-)

@ChristianHupfer it's not announced yet is it? (other than a message to texlive list saying it's not announced yet)

9:34 AM
@JosephWright mv /usr/local/texlive/2015{,-pretest} and install MacTeX

@DavidCarlisle According the website (a release statement) I would say this is an announcement (at least in German language we would call it that way)

@ChristianHupfer yes but you need to update the site so it can propogate to the mirrors, after a couple of days then a message goes to relevant lists. Not much you can do (probably) about people watching the site directly.

Is TeX.SX down?

@ChristianHupfer it's going up and down (status page says they are moving a server and might be down for 10 minutes...)

@DavidCarlisle: I see, thanks

9:43 AM
Has anyone with knowledge of FontForge checked in yet by the way?

@1010011010 we know it exists (even used it a bit) but probably wrong forum to find many people really experienced at font editing.
@egreg shocking outcome to tex.stackexchange.com/q/247464/1090

@DavidCarlisle My question is highly trivial, since I'm editing a font and the output only shows up in font forge... (Not in fontlab, not in fontexplorer, not in the windows font, not in the TeX font table, etc. etc.) It's pretty weird ....

@egreg I meant more generally: I tend to avoid in-place OS upgrades as a matter of course

Maybe GraphicDesign.SX knows more..

@DavidCarlisle About the tick?

9:55 AM
@egreg yes
@egreg always bad to start the day from -15

@DavidCarlisle The advantage of writing articulate and informative answers over tiny code snippets. :P

@egreg oh, I see.

10:15 AM
Is the site insanely slow for you?

Woohoo: new pickups arrived: guitar modification is on today :)

@clemens Oh no! :) Cool, I don't know how to make these mods. :)

In a utf8 text I have α sitting directly in the text, it comes out as an alpha. But how is that defined? I'm assuming it is typeset as a letter not math (it is not input as math). I need to make this alpha in some sans-serif font, so I need to know which slot to redefine it with.

@PauloCereda I'm just learning: I got a LP guitar kit as a birthday present

@clemens ooooh

10:25 AM
D'Oh, my bad, hmm, how do I delete my comment?
ahh it is too old

@daleif in pdftex, probably it should be defined to be \textalpha where that is an encoding specific command that picks up an alpha from somewhere, but what you actually have may be different...
@daleif you could grovel to Joseph and ask him to do it:-)

@DavidCarlisle turned out I had defined it myself (embarrassed imoji). Which slot is math alpha usually in? I'm just going to steal it from arevmath

@PauloCereda ^^^

@clemens AWESOME

10:30 AM
@daleif \DeclareMathSymbol{\alpha}{\mathord}{letters}{"0B}

@DavidCarlisle Thanks. Hmm. lato and arev doesn't mix that well, but it is better than lato + CM

@UlrikeFischer l3keys3 bug fixed in SVN :-)

lato + lxfonts looks better

Finally, after a long download time ...

@ChristianHupfer don't say that, only yesterday I was telling @JosephWright no one needed the DVD version anymore...

@DavidCarlisle: Well, the time until the DVD is shipped (or the iso image downloaded) is probably longer than download time of TL'15, so it's ok

@ChristianHupfer so now you can have runs of 1000 [h] floats all stacked up without running out of floats if you use \extrafloats{1000} :-)

@DavidCarlisle You know me: I object floats, so would rather say \extrafloats{-100000} :-P

@ChristianHupfer you don't like floats?

11:06 AM
@DavidCarlisle So instead of questions about “Float(s) lost” we'll have more about “why do all my figures get printed at the end of a chapter?”

@clemens: Yes ... consider that I use worksheet oriented content -- it's most time useless to let diagrams float to some other place -- students can be confused by figures that appear on the verso page of a sheet of paper ;-)

@ChristianHupfer phew!! I worried a bit what that would actually do. (it's silently ignored:-)
@egreg that's progress!

@DavidCarlisle Why not adding also a big flashing red warning when [H] is found? ;-)
The error message shown in tex.stackexchange.com/questions/249834/… recalls me of the announcement I often hear at the train station when I get back home: “the bus to Bassano is expected to leave from the expected place”.

11:29 AM
@egreg it does generate an error if H is found now.

11:58 AM
Given a fairly simple PDF file (Emacs says it is 155 lines), vector graphics, how can I change the colors in the file (it only uses a few). Was trying to get Acrobat v9.5 to do it on Windows (VM), but that does not match any of the guides I've found online.

@daleif emacs :(

Hmm, got it sort of working. But not quite how I wanted it

12:20 PM
@daleif depends how colors are set, assuming it's not compressed you may see colour operators such as C or K preceded by their arguments that you can edit, keeping the total byte counts the same. Otherwise, it gets harder:-)
@PauloCereda s/:(/:)/

@DavidCarlisle :)

12:46 PM
@cfr I'm not sure I agree with you on 'not having to check capitalisation' (logos are a different thing). For example, there's quite a prominent chemist with surname "RajanBabu" which does require a capital in the middle of the name. If I refer to his work I need to get that right.

1:02 PM
@DavidCarlisle Not if here is loaded. ;-)

is the download broken for anybody else? tug.org/mactex/mactex-download.html ( :( )

@GBeau Wait till the mirrors are updated

Oh was it just released TODAY? I thought it was earlier this week. I misread the schedule

@GBeau It has been uploaded to the main server yesterday, it takes a couple of days for the mirrors to be updated.

oh I see
I tried again several times and it directed me to a server that had the file

1:06 PM
@DavidCarlisle hmm, just for the fun of it, it is worth playing with. Just send the conference booklet off to printing. Interesting exercise in using LaTeX to format stuff where the content cannot be hand edited. Not super duper good, but good enough.

cfr
@JosephWright I don't think people's names are 'logos'. Indeed 'bell hooks' is not a logo, even though it is not even the author's legal name. (In this case, the name ought not be capitalised at all.) In any case, I used 'most' as a qualifier for 'words' advisedly.

@GBeau For instance, the Italian mirror I normally use has no MacTeX now; it had the old one a few hours ago.

@cfr Agreed, they are not logos :-)
@cfr My point was that whilst I don't particularly like \TeX{} in running text, TeX and Tex are different things
@cfr How do you handle iPhone and so on?

@JosephWright iTeX^G

Paulo help
I want to use the arara, but I don't want to install the JDK D;
I must cave in!

1:15 PM
@GBeau Hello! Which OS do you use? :)

OS X

@GBeau OK, gimme a minute, I need to consult my brain. :)

I recently switched from Linux (Gentoo)

@egreg don't use my packages
@GBeau get @PauloCereda to re-implement it in emacs lisp, he really wants to...

I am a vim guy
but if it avoids JDK...

1:21 PM
@GBeau I cannot avoid the JVM, but I could provide a batteries-included thingy that has everything (including a stripped down version of JRE), so you wouldn't need to have a external JVM

@PauloCereda Don't bother, but I am glad for the good thought! I will probably end up needing Java for something several months from now anyway

Good day

Inevitably somebody else will have something written in Java I need

@GBeau Stay tuned, this might be an interesting project. :)

I just discovered the incredible power of beamer.... why did i not use it much ealier? I guess I had to be reminded by PPT that told me last week that a presentation from two years ago needed "repair" ... wtf...

1:23 PM
@GBeau You could install the legacy Java, which is not a big deal. arara is compatible with it.

@PauloCereda I can watch your Github repository?

@GBeau You are more than welcome! :)
@RalfB Hello!

okay I will look

@RalfB: Blame @JosephWright for beamer. :)

hehe, i will

1:25 PM
@GBeau we forgive all kinds of sins here.

@DavidCarlisle specially emacs

@PauloCereda What I am surprised about a bit is that there are so few good templates for beamer despite its widespread use.

@DavidCarlisle I must admit I was surprised when I learned it shipped with an IRC client
Tex Live 2015 is still making its way around the mirrors, I presume i.imgur.com/6l5NLeq.png

cfr
@JosephWright I think the law should cover them, too! But at least you aren't meant to have the h a bit below the baseline, the o somewhere above the i and the n somewhere under the e and just a bit to the left or something.

oh

1:29 PM
@RalfB This is my current template:

user image

I must sudo - on Linux I have installed so tlmgr does not require

It's Mary Poppins flying over the rooftops of London as my presentation advances. :)

Installation success! I may annoy my colleagues with my bright orange beamer slides once again!
(Uni colors!)

@GBeau DO IT

cfr
1:52 PM
@JosephWright They'd never sell any because nobody would ever manage to complete the order form.

@cfr :-)

2:09 PM
oh! that reminds me
ATLAS updated their meta package of standards to play nicer with @JosephWright 's siunitx
I complained enough times

2:30 PM
help, somebody ... i just updated this answer tex.stackexchange.com/a/37481/579 to say that the earlier information about where to find something in a manual has changed, because the manual has been rewritten. but the intended link to the location of the manual on ctan isn't showing up. (well, the words are there, but are not highlighted, so no access to the url.) what have i fouled up this time? doesn't the [...](...) that works in comments work also in answers? it used to.

@barbarabeeton I fixed the link; it was invalid, full of %C2%AD mysterious bits. Well, not mysterious: it's the soft hyphen

@egreg -- thanks. i cut and pasted, and those "substitutions" didn't show up on my screen. (if they had, i would have fixed.) bah, humbug.

@barbarabeeton Too smart editor? ;-)

@egreg -- no, not even an editor, just the @#*(#%)*@$^ windows/firefox interface. can you tell that i really hate "tools" that hide things? (like my "smart" phone that insists on telling me that it has "nn apps running secretly".)

@barbarabeeton I use Firefox only for logging in to the site for entering grades after exams, because it doesn't like Safari. As far as the other thing you mention is concerned… ;-)

2:42 PM
@egreg -- well, at least there's only one thing here that absolutely requires explorer; that's even worse. i've also got seamonkey available, but it keeps telling me that something is out of date, and i don't have the authority to update any software on my workstation.

@egreg I am told you use | for absolute value, is \lvert and \rvert bad for any reason?
it seems everybody is using unique solution for this

consistint <<<<< @barbarabeeton 'bout time I found a typo in one of your documents:-)

is that THE Barbara Beeton

@DavidCarlisle -- where? (i'll fix it ...)

@GBeau @barbarabeeton are you an impostor? ^^^^

2:46 PM
:o

@barbarabeeton the stix test thingy Stephen just posted

@DavidCarlisle -- of course i'm an imposter. i'm pretending to be myself.

@barbarabeeton as we can tell, if you were pretending to be the AMS you'd have a shift key.

@DavidCarlisle -- urk. thanks. i'll fix it in the file, but it's too late for the posted version. once that's up, all useful contact is lost.

@GBeau To the contrary! Using \lvert and \rvert is recommended over |

2:52 PM
@barbarabeeton good: may be useful future ammunition to remind you next time you criticize my typing

@GBeau On the other hand, on Math.SE I usually don't bother and use |

@GBeau barbara always refers to herself in the third person so there's no way of finding out if this barbara is actually referring to the real barbara or if the real barbara is referring to herself which is actually her third person reference.

@DavidCarlisle -- well, i suppose then we should set a "handicap". one typo by me is equivalent to ten typos by you? sound fair?

@barbarabeeton 1:10000 more likely

Jan 23 at 12:41, by David Carlisle
@yo' that's ok I never make typos

2:56 PM
@PauloCereda I suspect that there is a proof reader in the house who may disagree

@DavidCarlisle barbara is my typographic guardian angel. :)

@PauloCereda -- i once made the rash statement that i proofread what i typed before sending, and corrected accordingly. clearly, @david found the one time i didn't.

@egreg Thank you. I have always wondered and not known what is recommended.

@barbarabeeton David is very good at breaking stuff, I guess. :)

@barbarabeeton I thought you'd take the simpler option of blaming your colleague. That's what I would have done.

2:59 PM
@DavidCarlisle -- nah, i have a policy to simply admit when i've done something stupid. then i don't have to remember what i might have told different people.

3:14 PM
@egreg Eek! Webkit :-(

cfr
@barbarabeeton Doesn't that require remembering what you've done?

@JosephWright Yeah, it's impossible to persuade the site to get the credentials from my keychain with Safari. And the password is ever changing, so I can't remember it.

@cfr -- not necessarily. i can always ask what problem was found, and if i caused it, admit it and apologize. (as for determining the cause, it's usually acceptable to ask to look at the evidence. i can usually recognize my "fingerprints".)

@JosephWright eek Webkit. :)
I will use Firefox until the end of time.
Unless a duck-themed browser appears.
Then I am sold. :)

@DavidCarlisle david pls
:)

yo'
@GonzaloMedina You missed it by 1 :)

@PauloCereda do you know those guys? github.com/johannesbottcher github.com/BlackForester ;)

4:10 PM
@clemens ooh :)

4:49 PM
What would we do with this kind of question?

@Johannes_B Thanks

@1010011010 Check out the video, it's quite nice.

5:19 PM
@Johannes_B You were right. It is quite nice.

@1010011010 ;-)

5:34 PM
@egreg: I'm not arguing against good typography. I'm trying to be factual and faithful to the network...

@Werner Overfull \hbox (169.4292pt too wide). That's the problem!
That's 2.35 inches.

Q: Install LaTeX on Mac OS X El Capitan (10.11)

LaXHow do I install MacTex or another LaTeX distribution? Even after installation, LaTeX commands like latex, pdftex or lualatex are not found, and /usr/texbin/ doesn't exist. Even worse, commands like sudo mkdir -p /usr/texbin return "permission denied"

Holy cow, El Capitan ALREADY?!

@PauloCereda Dev build available

@JosephWright what have the dev builds ever done for us? :)
3
@JosephWright I suspect @egreg has a Leopard running. :)

@PauloCereda I'll go for a clean install for 10.11, I suspect (I'm due one)

@JosephWright Cool!
I might do the very same thing.

7:12 PM
@PauloCereda Yes, on my good old MacMini.

@egreg Cool!
@egreg You probably know I keep arara Java 5.0 compliant because of you. <3

7:43 PM
@PauloCereda Wow, would love to try this template on some students ! :D

@PaulGessler Can I ask you a question about the \pgf path construction in tikz? I mean, when declaring a new shape.

@RalfB It is still in alpha. I have both elements fully TikZ-ed, so I hope to release a beta version soon. :)

great sounds nice... one could make adaptations to it... King Kong crawling over the Skyscraper skyline... etc.
Primarily i am looking for those simplified looks (for presentations and lectures) that hide the fact that I used beamer, you know what I mean?
There so many beamer templates and they are all sooo similar and overly cluttered

yo'
7:57 PM
@RalfB ever checked some of the simple ones?

i only found 2 or 3 now that use this simple style
i am happy for links

yo'
@RalfB I can't give you the template just now (it's under review, the code is unpublishable), but I can show you what can be done: kmlinux.fjfi.cvut.cz/~hejdato1/main/www/papers/…

@Alenanno sure, but I can't promise I'll be able to give any useful help... :-) :p I'm still at work, so my responses might be sporadic. But I will look here when I get home to see if you've asked anything. Or you can always email me—address is in the title block of the mugsthesis documentation on CTAN.

@PaulGessler Ok I'll write you an email. Thanks!

8:37 PM
@JosephWright I think I'll push my lua ucharcat to ctan now tl15 is out and it's pretty clearly not going to be added as primitive

9:03 PM
I just tried fontspec option Letters=Uppercase with TeX Gyre Adventor, but the feature is not available. Does anybody know how big chances are for a feature request to be implemented?

Should have said a while ago: MeFi has a tribute thread to Hermman Zapf: www.metafilter.com/150334/RIP-Hermann-Zapf-1918-2015
(A period on a line by itself represents a moment of silence in MeFi tradition)

9:23 PM
@DavidCarlisle Cool

Contemplates giving out bounties until he does not have enough reputation to be messaged about spam/insulting messages
@JosephWright You are the expert at this: Space, no space or SIunitx space on 22.81 %?

@Canageek Huh?

@JosephWright Hit enter by accident.

@Canageek Commonly seen all ways :-) The BIPM list as a unit (hence in siunitx) so I treat the same as ever other one

@JosephWright OK. I'll leave it as that then.

9:29 PM
Per my comment, is the El Capitan question OT on the grounds it's about a pre-release?

@JosephWright Step 1: Install linux. Step 2: Perform exorcism to remove any lingering evil.

Some of the titlepage are currently purely made up, some are built after actual titlepages. Does anyone know if i can get into licensing trouble for this? github.com/johannesbottcher/titlepages

@Canageek You could have the same on Linux with appropriate kernel set up :-)

Amazing and creepy: Sulimov dog

@Johannes_B You get fined by using Computer Modern Sans along with EB Garamond in the Duck book.
@JosephWright I agree with OT (and voted).

9:38 PM
@egreg I've commented

@JosephWright Error? I'm sure. I wonder if anyone has hacked it to use Linux kernal with Mac user space, or vis versa?

@egreg You are right, that looks awful. I can set those occurences to rmfamily. Any suggestion for a sans that goes along with EB Garamond?

@Canageek Have you heard of tripwire? You can set up the Linux kernel (appropriately patched) so that even root cannot alter some parts of the file system without a reboot into single-user mode. This means that only someone with physical access can make certain key changes.

@JosephWright Sounds useful for servers.

@Canageek Exactly

10:01 PM
@Johannes_B EB Garamond
@Johannes_B Garamond was designed when sans serif wasn't even imagined.

@JosephWright So, with Angew. Chemie, Int. Ed. which do I add ties to? o.0

@Canageek Probably none

@JosephWright So I should have only tied the J. ?
