I WAS ABLE TO ANSWER A QUESTION!

A: Latex by using command lines in a terminal

CanageekLaTeX is always run from the command line: An editor simply enters the command for you when you hit the button. Most tex editors will even allow you to customize what command you send. Given this, you don't need to write your file on the command line. Simply write and save the file as normal. T...

Welcome to TeX.SX! You cannot simply change the extension of the .tex file to .pdf: that's not how TeX works. Instead, you run a compiler on an input .tex file, which produces the output .pdf as a separate file. — Paul Gessler 32 mins ago
@PaulGessler I must say, I've never seen that one before.

4 hours later…
6:42 AM
@SeanAllred Is that from the question I linked? Or the same person?

7:22 AM
@wget presumably it is defined already to something you don't expect. put \show\footerRight before the \else (or before the \ifx) and tex will stop and show you the definition at that point

@DavidCarlisle Should we rollback if the OP adds different details to his question?
See revision 3 here:

@Alenanno I wouldn't roll back an edit from an OP to his own question, I do leave comments sometimes saying that changing a question (especially if it invalidates existing answers) is not the thing to do.

@DavidCarlisle I did leave such a comment (although under my own answer), but I doubt it's going to work.

9:28 AM
@Alenanno it happens:-)

@DavidCarlisle True. :P

10:02 AM
Anyone ever see tex/latex/tools/ going missing on a MacTeX installation? A student just came by with a missing bm.sty problem. I ended up asking her to reinstall MacTeX 2014.

@Canageek ... instead of subcaption :-p I agree with you, think about header-footer. At least 3 different packages available that do the job more or less properly.
@daleif Moved by mistake to somewhere LaTeX can't find it?

@Johannes_B no idea, never seen this before. And since the files are owned by root I don't think she would have moved them by accident.

@daleif Haven't seen it before either. Deleting files would also need root priviliges. So this is strange.

@Johannes_B Cosmic rays, the presence of annoying people, anything can happen

@daleif :-)
Let me also add that my dissertation is due tomorrow, so I will not have time to put together a small working example today. Seems there was something missing in his studies.

@Canageek Different person/question, actually :)
@Johannes_B oy… A MWE takes exactly three minutes to put together… that question took at least five/ten minutes to write on its own.

@SeanAllred Usually takes me a bit longer to prepare one, but i agree.

12:06 PM
@Johannes_B Well, a minimal example for a question such as that wouldn't take much. Just paring down a copy of your own document, removing a couple packages, etc., and making sure the problem still shows up.

@SeanAllred True, i usually have to dig a bit through user-code (sometimes my own) to find the reason of problems.

Hi guys. Has any one here experience with generating (I do mean generating, not drawing) graphs in LaTeX? I don't know where to start ;)

12:38 PM
@VicAche pgfplots manual is usual place to start (or type pgfplots into search box on the main site for 1000s of examples)

yo'
@VicAche you mean "plots", right? :)

No guys, I mean graphs ;)
graphviz-dev.appspot.com/… @DavidCarlisle @yo'

@VicAche oh answer is more or less the same actually (same underlying tex code) tikz (and its many extension packages) has lots of stuff for that start with tikz manual (or pstricks, but tikz seems more popular on this site)

@DavidCarlisle OK thanks I will look into it.

@VicAche you may not want "directed graph" but it helps disambiguate the search phrase:-)

12:46 PM
@DavidCarlisle again most of it is to plot graphs
@DavidCarlisle I'm into generating graphs, I use dot/graphviz to do that but I would like to be able to do it in LaTeX directly

@VicAche Part IV of the current TikZ manual is the Graph Drawing documentation. But I don't understand what you'll gain from generating a graph without drawing it.

@VicAche first couple I looked at were about graph theoretic graphs rather than function plots eg
21
A: Typesetting a directed, weighted graph with TikZ

Alain MatthesI made tkz-graph and tkz-berge to help beginners to draw some graphs. tkz-berge is used for specials graphs (named graphs in graph theory) You can use only tikz to draw graphs. Version with tkz-graph \documentclass[]{article} \usepackage[utf8]{inputenc} \usepackage[usenames,dvipsnames]{xcolor} ...

@PaulGessler ah the mythical tikz manual, do you claim to have seen it?

I do want to draw the graph. Here is what my code looks like:
digraph g{
S
E
S->E
}
What I want to avoid is having to provide coordinates or any other positional information for my graph.

@DavidCarlisle far too much of it, I must admit. I assume you are an expert in the MS Paint manual, yes? I hear it's several thousand pages long. ;-)

12:56 PM
@VicAche that manual is not current anymore

@VicAche most of the code in the link I just gave does not set the node position by coordinates (but does have some compass direction hints on edge directions) but I have to ask latex is highly non-optimised for doing the combinatorics necessary to implement graph layout algorithms, why do it in latex?

Just do texdoc tikz at a command line to get the docs for the version currently installed on your system.

@DavidCarlisle I'm publishing a paper, and need to include illustrations. I want my nodes to display latex-formated text

@PaulGessler just for you ^^^^ (@VicAche ignore us:-)

1:00 PM
time for a new question on main: How do I make my directed graph look like it was drawn by a Cthulhu-worshipping madman?

@VicAche yes but you can use something else to do the graph layout and still have tex text, you just need to get the coordinates

Yes of course. It would be acceptable for me to find a way to display graphviz output in LaTeX
I found several of these on the internet, none of which that works

@VicAche searching for tikz graphviz turns up an application to take dot format input an dgenerate needed tikz: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/51693/…

yeah but that requires external processing
the manual I linked to seems to imply tikz is capable of doing it directly, but the syntax has changed since publication

@VicAche because the manual you linked to is 2.5 yr old. As I said above, use texdoc tikz to open the locally-installed documentation.

1:11 PM
@PaulGessler I'm using (not my choice) sharelatex.com/ here. Cannot.

@VicAche then use texdoc.net/pkg/tikz to open the online documentation for the current version. You'll still have to make sure this matches ShareLaTeX's installed version, you can check it by putting \pgfversion somewhere in your document temporarily and looking at the output.

@PaulGessler thanks :)
@Paul 3.0.0 ;)

@VicAche that's good news, that's the current version, and the texdoc.net's copy of the manual will match up. :-)

@PaulGessler Now I'm left with spending the night reading a 1k pages manual :)

@PaulGessler ah the mythical tikz manual, do you claim to have seen it?

I need 236 more reviews before getting the reviewer badge for First posts, that means i have done 14 reviews. The highest review count of 6714 (about 24 % of all reviews) by a user i cannot remember to have ever seen an answer. Another user is almost in the top reviewers list, coming to my attention by editing questions/answers (for which i get a brown sign in the top bar). Does that mean i am not active enough? ;-)

@PaulGessler out of the two syntaxes described, one doesn't work
@PaulGessler @DavidCarlisle Now it works. Thanks for your help with using paint guys

@Johannes_B yes

@DavidCarlisle Well, somehow the review queues are always empty. :-) Wonder how that can happen.

@Johannes_B you've done almost 3 times the number I've done

@Johannes_B no, it means that the guy-at-the-top is a robo reviewer.

@yo' Funny thing is, i skipped more suggested edits than confirm.

@Johannes_B I think I reject a lot of them, but not skip. I've skipped couple reopen reviews

Hi. Perhaps a strange question but does the following document compile for you guys without errors?
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\usepackage{microtype}

\catcode`\^^[=12 % for technical reasons

\DisableLigatures[^^[]{encoding=T1}

\begin{document}
ffl ffi
\end{document}

@1010011010 under TL14 frozen it does on my system (pdflatex)

No errors like... say... Package microtype Error: Disabling ligatures of a font is only possible
(microtype) with pdftex version 1.30 or newer.

@1010011010 works fine (tl2015 pdflatex)

@Johannes_B: other guys have scripts to sweep over the queues ;-) No, I am not one of them

@1010011010 not a thing

2:32 PM
@1010011010 that's an old pdftex, mine says This is pdfTeX, Version 3.14159265-2.6- 1.40.16 (TeX Live 2015) (preloaded format=pdflatex)

@DavidCarlisle Does that come with TL15?

@1010011010 yes but tl2014 was ...

Mine says this: This is XeTeX, Version 3.14159265-2.6-0.99991 (TeX Live 2014/W32TeX) (preloaded format=xelatex)
Or
Oh wait, yes it was XeTeX...
That's why... haha

@1010011010 This is pdfTeX, Version 3.14159265-2.6- 1.40.15 (TeX Live 2014) (preloaded format=pdflatex)
@1010011010 that is xetex not pdftex

Are any of you ligature-savvy?

@ChristianHupfer Sitting in the sun my laptop gets quite warm. The sun is shining right at that cooling thing at the side. Looks dusty. Took a little vacuum cleaner with little success. Blowing air inside with my mouth, i think dust came out of the speakers or something.

@Johannes_B: There is sun in Freiberg? ;-)

@ChristianHupfer about 20 celsius on moday, thunder storm in the early evening, little bit colder. Tuesday, snow, quite a lot. Today, nice.

@Johannes_B: The appendix question shows again that there are lot of users having no idea how to structure documents, regardless whether they are using LaTeX or ... the office program which must not be named in here (let's call it 'DROW') ;-)

@ChristianHupfer I didn't know it either before i learned it. But not by some teacher in school or university, but by a fellow TeX user explaining the \appendix business.

@Johannes_B: Nobody showed me... it used 'old' books or existing PS files to learn how to structure the doc. Perhaps I will offer a LaTeX course next year at school for pupils and teachers ;-)

2:57 PM
@ChristianHupfer In the same room, getting the same grades?
@ChristianHupfer Any ideas how to do your LaTeX-course?

@Johannes_B cooperative learning...

@ChristianHupfer meaning what?

@Johannes_B: Yes, I will advise anyone to use \bf and classicthesis

@ChristianHupfer Oh please don't even joke about this.

@Johannes_B: Each one does help another one
@Johannes_B: I wasn't joking :-P

3:01 PM
@ChristianHupfer Sitting in a circle, you whisper a command in the ear of the first, to the next, to the next and in the end you get XeTeX-like confusion for everybody?
@ChristianHupfer LaLaLaLa i cannot hear you

@Johannes_B: Nobody is forced to use XeTeX :-P

@ChristianHupfer We had quite the hard case today ot goLaTeX. Almost called up Sherlock Holmes for help: golatex.de/…

Implementing \hfill by way of tabularx with an empty X column. Sometimes I wish I'd never written that package :(
@KhaledHosny Hi! Hope things are well with you (you shook up the xetex list a bit!)

@DavidCarlisle I really should have followed that list.

@DavidCarlisle: I’m fine, thanks for asking. I think people are over-reacting, it have been worse when Jonathan “left”, it just went unnoticed back then because it was not announced.

@KhaledHosny yes of course, I more or less dropped off latex maintenance for 10 years and then came back but no one noticed (much:-) I spent some very frustrating hours trying to make \string and friends work on non-bmp characters. I must say I understand now your comments on the difficulty of following the web code. (I'd read tex.web before but never actually tried to change any web code until last few days)

@DavidCarlisle: I never understood much of anything when it comes to the WEB code, and it shows; wherever I touch it I end introducing more bugs than I fix. It was really frustrating and I’m really glad I do not have to worry about it anymore.

@KhaledHosny :-) well good luck in whatever projects you take up instead. Hopefully out of some combination of xetex/luatex/sile/something the tex world will finally get something that works well with rtl languages and font shaping etc. One day....

4:12 PM
@DavidCarlisle: As for \string bug, my “understanding” is that print_char() there puts the UTF-16 surrogate pairs in the input stream at a very late stage so they end up interpreted literally, and you can just insert them as Unicode scalar values (UTF-32) because XeTeX internally uses UTF-16 and the string pool array is a UTF-16 array. I have no idea how to fix it, though.
@DavidCarlisle: hopefully...

@KhaledHosny yes exactly but when I tried modifying it not to do that I got a single token instead of two but it just had the lower 16 bits of the utf32, and when I tried to fix that, I got segfaults and gave up:-) I might try again later

@DavidCarlisle: I once considered moving XeTeX internally to use UTF-32 and stop all the surrogate pairs mangling here and there, but I couldn’t get myself to do it and had no idea how bad that would be on memory usage.

@KhaledHosny sounds like a plan although at some point adding font library support to luatex starts to appeal more, eg github.com/michal-h21/luatex-harfbuzz-shaper

@DavidCarlisle: Hooking HarfBuzz into LuaTeX is relatively easy, getting that integrated into TL build can be tricky, but getting Hans to accept it (even as an option) is near impossible (which is less important if you don’t use ConTeXt).
But there are more trickier questions, like having directionality model that actually works and integrating Unicode BiDi algorithm on top of it (it is 2015, one should not be marking right-to-left and left-to-right text manually!).

4:29 PM
@KhaledHosny yes
@KhaledHosny I suppose you are not so keen on this as a plan:

@JosephWright new plan: everyone speak English.

@DavidCarlisle The British and Americans have tried to implement this. With significant partial success. Which is why I'm typing this in English, though I am neither British or American.

In terms of profiling, is it better to first check whether a boolean is true and then define something based on what the result is, or first define something and then check whether the boolean is true? The environment is pretty basic so two checks for the boolean seems a bit weird (looking at the sidenotes package here?)

@FaheemMitha sadly yes, sorry
@1010011010 ?

@DavidCarlisle don't apologise. It's not your fault, unless you are several hundred years old and a member of some secret society.

@FaheemMitha that's @egreg not me

There is apparently some theory that the world is run by some secret lizard organization. If true, it would explain a lot.

Funny cracked article on the subject - cracked.com/…
Totally off topic, of course. But hey, at least it's not cricket. Or ducks.

@DavidCarlisle Saying that when I'm blocked at the train station because of a big power outage. You're mean, as usual. :)

6:01 PM
@DavidCarlisle ? :-)
@egreg How do I generalize your answer here to any font? tex.stackexchange.com/questions/230118/…
My font blatantly refuses to use ligatures... I'm at the point where I'm considering using tftopl, change the pl file and setting ligatures manually, and pltotf back to squeeze them out. :-/

@1010011010 It is general, provided the font has the right glyphs at the positions.
@1010011010 But of course it's only for XeTeX.

@egreg So my font doesn't have the right glyphs at the positions.

@1010011010 Sorry.

@egreg I'll post a question. I actually don't mind some manual labour to get everything just right. I just need to find out how:-)

@1010011010 If the font has no f-ligatures, what can you hope to get?

6:13 PM
@egreg It has the ligatures, they're just not applied.
I have a small question before I post a question that is possibly too broad:

@1010011010 ?

@egreg The ligatures are in the font table, but they don't show up in the compiled document.
Anyway, the small question is the following. My font has all types of glyphs in the font table. Ranging from the square root sign (excluding an extensible overline for the argument of the square root of course), integral signs, but also ligatures, alternates, swashes, etc.

LaTeX has a few automated solutions which (in my opinion) are *more complete* but also more error prone if you want to have everything "just right" (as I mentioned earlier). Does all of this fall under the same term, that is, am I right to ask for a generalized method to do this manually, or am I asking for several diffe

6:31 PM
@1010011010 but are they specified as ligatures in the font or do you just mean it has an ff glyph?

@DavidCarlisle If one would believe Illustrator, at least two of five glyphs definitely show up as ligatures.

@1010011010 those two have "legacy" unicode code points are you sure it isn't just showing that unicode block rather than ligature glyphs in the font (which typically have no code point) (But I know nothing about opentype internals, know rather more about tfm)

@DavidCarlisle The drop down menu has two categories, "Entire font" and "Standard Ligatures". I'd argue that this is going to be it.

@1010011010 as I say I know nothing about opentype fonts and have never used illustrator so you don't need to have too much faith in my statements:-)

6:46 PM
@DavidCarlisle It's fine. My question will cover tfm as well so there's something for everybody. And of course I can stay as true to the goal we set to use every single of your answers that I could find. (I'm still not going to implement the power tower in my document.)

@1010011010 as long as you include the plane

7:09 PM
Would an MWE be desirable? It would literally contain nothing since I technically can't distribute a commercial font...
Think a few lines like \usepackage[T1]{fontenc} and \begin{document} fi ffi ffl\end{document}....

@1010011010 use a public font, try to add a ligature between a and b or whatever,

@DavidCarlisle Fair enough.

7:35 PM
This is it for now, I guess...

Q: How to manually set font encoding settings of a font?

1010011010I have a font with a font table containing ligatures, but also math radicals, operators and e.g. an integral sign. (It's a different font from the one I'm showcasing in this question, which doesn't contain the integral sign.) In my case some character combinations don't trigger the glyph replace...

@DavidCarlisle Oh, how nice, thanks
@DavidCarlisle I wonder if the prof is happy that his email address is all over the place.
What kind of question is this?

8:08 PM
Help! I spent the afternoon printing almost 2,000 pages of material (12 copies of about 150 pages plus a bit more). I did not notice until somebody just looked through some and pointed it out to me, but most of the 't's are missing from the print. Not all of them. Just most of them. It always seems to be the serif, upright, lowercase 't' which is missing. And it seems entirely random.
I'm using cfr-lm so it is Latin Modern. I'm also using microtype. The PDF was generated using pdflatex. It was printed from Adobe Reader 11 on a Windows machine to a networked photocopier. The material was sent as one document of 86 pages and one of 60 pages. How can I figure out what is causing it so that I can correct it?

@cfr is the t visible in reader and vanish in print or is it missing in reader

yo'
Google is a bunch of idiots. Now, it's official.

cfr
@DavidCarlisle I don't have access to the Windows machine now but I think it is missing in the print only. The 't's are definitely there in reader 9 on Linux.
The only fonts not embedded (because included PDFs use them) printed fine. Only the Latin Modern 't's are affected and those are all embedded subsets.

@cfr hmm print driver out of my area of expertise:( If it's only some of the t's I'd look at adjacent characters st ligatures... etc
@cfr you could force lm not to be subsetted

cfr
@DavidCarlisle Ligatures involving 't'? It's the T1 encoding.

8:21 PM
@cfr or kerns, although that's less likely to have such an effect. Have no idea really

cfr
@DavidCarlisle Might that help? Is there a way to do that within the document?
@DavidCarlisle It isn't ligatures. I know it is not ligatures. I wrote the encoding file. If it was 'f', yes, but there are no 't' ligatures.

@cfr no idea, no (you can fiddle with the map file to stop subsetting but I've not looked at that this century, so don't recall the details)

cfr
@DavidCarlisle It's OK. Thanks. I am pretty sure I can change the map file appropriately if necessary. I am wondering if microtype is involved but I can't think how or why.
@DavidCarlisle Actually, the ligatures there are are fine - find, different etc. Also, the same word will occasionally be fine even though mostly the 't' is missing. E.g. Kant is occasionally 'Kant' even though mostly he's 'Kan'. (Aristotle has fared even worse.)
@DavidCarlisle I guess for now I'll just go the PDF -> PS -> PDF route, which destroys the fonts and replaces them with whatever. I hoped that if it was printed from the computer this wouldn't be necessary. But I guess there is just a more subtle problem this way. Damn.

@cfr sorry something about your phrasing lead me to ...Immanuel Kant was a real pissant...Aristotle, Aristotle was a bugger for the bottle,

cxbayrakWhat is the best Textstudio configuration. The reason I am asking this question is related to the inconsistent behavior I have been encountering. The document that I used to edit and compile cannot be compiled any more.

@StefanKottwitz A quick google search yields: google.nl/…
@cfr Thanks for your comment, I guess it does put some things in perspective. I may need to make rather intrusive changes to my question....

@1010011010 mh

@cfr Alternatively I could rephrase it to cover only the conversion from a "relatively standard" .otf file to TeX understandable format.

cfr
9:42 PM
@ChristianHupfer I could answer the TeX/pdfTeX but I'd have to write a book which would exceed the limit on posts. It is, as I indicated to @1010011010, a bad question (for this site) which it was entirely reasonable to ask. There should be some sort of badge available for asking such questions so that the OP can be compensated for inadvertently opening Pandora's Box when all they meant to do was get 'affluent fluidity' and 'officially finishing differentiation' to display correctly.
@StefanKottwitz What happened to him? Nothing bad, I hope?

@cfr I have one question so that I know what I'm up to a little better: texdoc fontinst as well as the font installation guide both start with the assumption afm files are available. I'm working with otf font files and I'm not sure how clean the conversion from that format to afm will be. In fact, I feel like it's a bad idea to make the conversion at all. What's your take on this? Or should I inquire with the type foundry to supply the correct file types?

cfr
@1010011010 That is doable. It doesn't really matter whether it is .otf or not, actually. Well, there are ways of using otftotfm, probably. fontinst offers a more general solution if you don't mind using virtual fonts. One reason to like this option is that I think it is probably the best way to go if you are interested in doing other things later. Moreover, if you might want to combine characters from different fonts into one TeX 'font', then you have to use virtual fonts.

@cfr He should be traveling these days, visiting a conference, so I guess he just doesn't have the possibility to come here

@1010011010 otftotfm is converting the fonts to type1 fro TeX/pdfTeX anyway. I wouldn't worry about converting to afm. I've done it for truetype and opentype. The only problem is that, in some cases, you have to drop some kerning pairs if there's not room. But that is quite unusual - I've only had to do that a very few times.
@StefanKottwitz OK. Good. The way you said it I worried that I'd missed some kind of bad news and he was in hospital or something.

@cfr not at all, there are no bugs in my system (of course)

@DavidCarlisle Well, the bug is not in my system either! I suspect that the crappy printer driver or the crappy memory can't cope with more than so many fonts, and that it objects to the number microtype produces. But I'm not sure. I know that the basis on which the university selected their current copier contract was the following: cheapest. It seems to have escaped them that this was likely to turn out to be rather expensive.
@DavidCarlisle Hmm... I have bad memories of Spain, so I'm not sure that's an improvement.
