@JosephWright No I think that we have to claim that é is a letter for the system, but that as a personal choice you might want to think hard before using non ascii identifiers, for compatibility with pdftex or english people or something. We shouldn't try to enforce that in the system (if we tried someone would just make an international-latex that hacked \dump to reset the catcodes)
@PauloCereda so more seriously in Brazil where English isn't so well known, would you find people using non ascii identifiers in programming languages that support it (javascript, perl6, python3 etc...)
@PauloCereda well the context of the above comments was thoughts about what the catcode of say ç and ã should be. Currently xe/lua latex makes them catcode 11 so you can go \def\atenção{...} if you like, then it's just a social or policy choice whether doing that is a good idea. But you could make them catcode 12 then that would define \aten with a weird null argument delimiter, just as it does in pdftex. personally I think catcode 11 even if that feature isn't often used.
@DavidCarlisle Ah I see. :) I was doctrinated to avoid accented letters, so \atenção automatically looks weird to me although I agree it's to some extent semantically closer to one's intention than \atencao.
@DavidCarlisle I'd also suspect the TL team would say something like 'we can't alter this in XeLaTeX/LuaLaTeX now as people have written docs assuming catcode-11'

@DavidCarlisle I can see both sides to this, but it seems pretty odd from a user POV to say 'this thing that is clearly a letter is regarded as a non-letter by XeLaTeX/LuaLaTeX for compatibility with pdfTeX': one of the points of the newer engines is that they are native Unicode!
@JosephWright yes, I think it's same as the other programming languages, in practice you almost never see non ascii identifiers in public libraries, but if there isn't a technical reason to prevent it it shouldn't be prevented, and in private or local projects people can make their own choices.
There was this plugin named Cloud to Butt which replaced all ocurrences of the cloud with er... posterior. :) So I adapted one which replaces the TeX family with duck. :)

Is it one of your LUA files? I looked but could not find it. The reason, I wanted to make print the full path name of the latex file it is processing.
I invoke the build using make4ht ofcourse. I have a need to find which file it is processing all the time, since I have large tree, and when I look at the monitor, I have no idea where it is at the time.
This is being fixed now. Stand by. We are in the middle of converting some of the older sites to a new CSS framework, so they may take a little longer.
@TRiG There are various good texts: I like Nicola Talbot's book and also Marc van Dongen's for 'up to date' info, but Kopa and Daly remains a strong starting point
@TRiG Using LaTeX for documents does involve the code/output idea but it's rather specialised: most of a 'real' document will be text/'content' rather then commands

I am frequently asked this question by friends who want to learn LaTeX, and I recommend the book which got me started, The Not So Short Introduction to LaTeX2ε, but I feel that there might be better option...
@TRiG I've no idea how their backend works, but running a LaTeX server is somewhat specialised. Perhaps [Overleaf ](overleaf.com) have something in the right vein (certainly you can try stuff out their without installing)

Does anyone here know how LaTeX renders integral symbols?
and other mathematical symbols? To me it doesn't look like it needs a font to do so, because typing ∫ in CMU font doesn't look as good as the real LaTeX typeset thing
@Ell oh yes of course, that isn't the default font used by tex (which can't use unicode fonts unless you are using xetex or luatex variants) tex uses many different fonts and in math each symbol is associated with (potentially) a different font.
@DavidCarlisle \usepackage[spanish]{babel} ought to work, if the class and the font definitions were complying with LaTeX programming rules. They aren't.
@egreg Yes but since the published class is just designed for publishing english manuscripts submitted to one publisher, making it suitably generic probably wasn't a requirement
@DavidCarlisle It's wrong anyway; why not producing a set of virtual fonts instead of relying on non standard encodings? They're looking for disgrace once somebody wants to insert some part in different languages.
@Ell -- there are a lot of things in unicode that also require "markup", in other words, just specifying a unicode character position isn't enough. and the sizing and selection of an appropriate integral is one of those things -- it's necessary to know the context and interpret it properly. this is somewhat covered in unicode technical report #25 (unicode.org/reports/tr25 , support for mathematics).

is it memory allocation issue? because the dvi file is very large?
I am starting the build again, just in this one folder, to see if I get this error again.
I googled and can't find hint. It looks like memory allocation from the std::bad_alloc above

@michal.h21 actually, since now I broke the build into smaller files, this file is not that huge, about 100,000 images in it only.
@percusse, @PaulGessler would you say the behaviour in the intersection cs described here tex.stackexchange.com/q/229297/3954 to be a bug? It's so weird that the syntax allows spaces before -- but not after it (in my opinion, it should admit spaces on both sides or don't admit spaces on either side).
@michal.h21 sorry, I had one extra zero, it was 10,000 images or around there. So not really large idv file. But it is running now, will see if I get same error again., If so, it might be due to doing it all once vs. one at a time? do not know now.
@michal.h21 we really need an internal design document for tex4ht. The data flow that is. I had no idea for example that tex4ht, takes the images from dvi file, put each math equation image in one page and make idv file, then process that. May be there is a way to optimize all this process from the start if one knows how tex4ht works internally a little more
Since more the time spend is in this phase, image generation for equations. This what makes tex4ht so slow

I am looking for a program that will let a user edit text and then compile the document without any knowledge of LaTeX. Not like a WYSIWYG editor, because no changes to the layout should be made. Only edit text, then compile.

@michal.h21 i've put 2 IDV files here 12000.org/tmp/make4ht one is large 80 MB, which was before I broke the build to smaller files, but kept it for reference, and the second is only 12 MB, which is typical of what now I use. Thanks again for speeding up the dvi process. Now it is much faster. WHat used to take 4 hrs, now takes less than one hr
@Johannes_B Now speaking seriously, the OP is asking for some .tex file "ready to use". All needed packages loaded, all configurations set, so he/she only has to replace the placeholder text with his/her actual text and compile and bam! His/her shinny document is ready! That should be called the "LaTeX freshman's dream".

@michal.h21 the latex compile part is always fast, it is the dvi image processing which is slow. my VBox/Linux has 2 GB RAM for it, my PC has 16 GB RAM.
@Nasser yes but still since you are generating your documents anyway there is no need to remake any of the svg maths equations unless they have changed.

Actually I was just going to have a moan about the fact that TeXworks keeps crashing on me (twice in 2 hours) and I keep losing stuff. But I guess nobody round here much uses Windoze, right?

@FionaSmith these days (as i only use latex for questions here) I just type pdflatex into an xterm, i used to use auctex (emacs front end to latex when I was doing more of my own documents)
@DavidCarlisle <sigh.> I need to get me a linux machine... What I don't get about emacs is why it insists on having keyboard shortcuts that bear no resemblance to any other piece of software known to man...
@FionaSmith cygwin is a passable linux emulation over windows so you have windows but with all the usual linux things like bash as a command line and perl and sed and make and X windows (I find it hard to use windows without installing a real window system:-)
@DavidCarlisle thanks for the explanation. I am contemplating removing Vista from our old laptop and installing some flavour of linux instead, so if that all goes well, I might just end up using windows for web browsing in front of the TV and extracting photos from my (windows) phone!
@michal.h21 I put the idv file that causes the crash here 12000.org/tmp/make4ht I will now start build again, but will not use your open-one-time method and go back to the old way open-each-time method (the slow way) and see if the error goes away. If it goes away, this means the open-one-time method does not work on large files? or bug in dvisvgm program

@JosephWright I did wonder at the time if we ought to have a test harness that runs the whole thing with \RequirePackage[2014/05/01]{latexrelease} as there are a lot of code branches not tested otherwise.
@JosephWright as it is the test suite is checking the new code returns the same tlg as the old release but it isn't checking the docstrip guards claiming to re-instate the old code do in fact generate the old tlg.

There seems to be something strange in the default texlive 2014 I get !
