this is my first question ;). I have defined a custom header in my beamer template and I want to show multiple lines. Since \\ isn't available in beamercolorbox I had to use \newline instead. The problem is that I cannot define a distance between the lines! I cannot use \vspace or another \newlin...
If I feed a simple LaTeX table to Pandoc, e.g.

the resulting table will lack the caption (moreover, it also prints the characters '[h!]' ...
You have to expand the optional argument before \printbibliography sees it:

@FaheemMitha: tex.stackexchange.com/a/228402/3094 Although your code works, IMHO it's badly written (try, for instance, adding some real text in the document scope, since you are inside expl, which is not even properly closed). :( I highly suggest you to enclose your L3 code inside a proper macro and avoid side effect propagation.
Where would an Off line go? After the end of the expl3 code? I was meaning to ask about that. Do the expl3 conventions and regular LaTeX 2e code mix, or not?
@DavidCarlisle well, you'd have to check the list at every addition. One could do that, certainly, but it's probably more efficient to remove dupes at the end.
@FaheemMitha it is exactly the same as \makeatletter ... \makeatother you need hose around a region to use @ and you need the L3 version to use _ and :

@FaheemMitha You are adding ref so if \csname r@#1\endcsname is already defined you have seen this ref before and don't need to add it again. There is need to build a list with duplicates

@FaheemMitha yes although not testing r@#1 (as that just tells you that there is a label) but you could make each ref leave a csname so you know you have seen it (this trades space for time)
@FaheemMitha When an argument is specified as s, a * is looked for; if there is, \IfBooleanTF(#1} follows the true branch (in this case it's the first argument, so #1). Since we do nothing when the * is given, it's easier using \IfBooleanF{#1} that has only the false branch.
@ChristianHupfer :) In Portuguese we have masculine and feminine articles only, so the neuter thingy is quite new for me. :) Amusingly, I found some words are masculine for you and feminine for me; e.g, der Apfel in Portuguese is a maçã, so if I had to put an article before Apfel considering my acquired grammatical knowledge (based on Portuguese), I'd go with die Apfel (then an apple is killed!), because maçã is feminine in Portuguese. :)
@JosephWright currently I have build-config.lua saying checkengines = {"xetex","etex"} (and then I fail) do you think we should check in xetex tlg so it passes (even if the tests are nonsense under xetex as they use inputenc?)
@JosephWright OK I'll look through my failures and if they just look like inputenc nonsense rather than an actual unexpected behaviour I'll check them in as xetex.tlg (I think I did that before but no harm to check again:-)
@JosephWright I don't have a problem with checking in ones that have a warning saying "dont use inputenc" but is it ok to check in tlb0380 as passed (this explicitly sets T1 fontenc then checks all the space factor codes). I supposed it's passed as in "best we can do this time" but if we check them in it means at some point we need to go through all the xetex tlg again and see why they are different. perhaps that's what you meant by " clear idea of where we have failures"
If you let the \sqrt grow large it might be hard to avoid a horizontal notch at the top, but...

@Johannes_B feynmf is difficult to answer as it appears that not at lot of QCD/QED physicists are here on TeX.SX! It's about 15 years ago I've done such graphs (by hand ;-)) for the last time.

@Rico depends what you expect as input, just parsing the occasional \ or {} is easy but if you want to convert real world documents loading some weird journal class and tikz and expl3 it gets harder, which is why tex4ht and latexml end up being complicated

@yo' yes that's a possibility but technically it's going 3 sides round a square, pretty much all the drawing primitives in pgf are supported in svg (or canvas) so it ought to be able to go straight to that rather than via pdf.
@Rico Same here. I don't know where color (or keyword?) should be typeset. The thing is, i bet he doesn't know either and asks for suggestions. But i don't know what the general goal is.
@JosephWright graphics, top level buid ctan just quietly hangs but if you run texlua build.lua check tlb3873 in graphics you get the error. I tried a couple of things but couldn't see immediate fix other than ping you
@DavidCarlisle Sounds about right: the build check routine is meant to be 'quiet' when running all tests mainly as I don't think scrolling all of the output is that helpful. I find it better to focus on issue tests as and when I need to
@DavidCarlisle Like I say, this is another thing I suspect we need to sort out: xetex.def is a 'community' effort at present (i.e. something got written and used with minimal oversight!)
@JosephWright yes but I left it running and came back and it had got stuck with no obvious error:-) build.lua in base does dofile (maindir .. "/build-config.lua") would it need to look for its own config file?

@JosephWright short term is there anywhere i can copy in xetex.def so it just works I thought maindir/support would work (where test2e is but apparently not)

@JosephWright it slows it down quite a bit so perhaps i won't check in the checkengines = {"xetex","etex"} but I want to check that build ctan works with that before checking in the additional tlg. It's running now (again;-)

@barbarabeeton Andrew's answer actually shows a case where this would be useful. I think that looking for \tagform@ you can find other cases on the site. It has been popular for some time, IIRC.
@PauloCereda It always did didn't it? Ah yes but all the mods he's used so far use "forge" which uses its own class loader and avoids the need to mess with the main jar
@PauloCereda files.minecraftforge.net we got the one for minecraft 1.8 but actually had to go back and get 1.7.10 as most of the mods available seem to use that still then he's got railcraft and lots o mobs which both sit on that forge base
@PauloCereda hardest part was downloading the mods, they all seem to use spurious ad-laden spoofware sites where every link that says "download" is the wrong thing, and you have to carefully click on the actual filename to trigger a download of the file you want.
@JosephWright I'm curious about the review queues and perhaps you could help me here. How exactly does a question go into a review queue? Let's say I vote to close a question; does it mean that that question will immediately go to the "Close" queue for some users (other than me)?
@GonzaloMedina There're couple problems with the queues. First, the brown number is only shown when there're at least 3 items in the queue. Second, especially the FP queue does not receive all first posts, for whatever reason. Third, in the FP queue, if someone votes only with no other activity, it counts as reviewed and doesn't show to more users.
I've always wondered- and I figure you all would know the answer. How do book authors make such nice looking photos? Something like a spinning top in a physics book, or a picture of an atom... I know LaTeX has packages for some basic pictures, but what about for the more complicated ones?
@GonzaloMedina it's not optimal. I've got a MSE feature request in mind, but posting requests there takes some consideration and time, which I'm not gonna devote to it now :)
@PaulGessler you live in an ideal world :D Here, if you wanna make a textbook, you give the PDF (!) file to the university Publishing House. There's no post-production. Unfortunately.
@yo' well that's why I said "in my experience": I am making money doing just that right now. And what I get from the authors is usually .... well, to put it nicely.... not fit for publication.
@JosephWright well, the university should be willing to pay for the post-production. They are not. It took a lot of convincing to make the university journal get proper typesetting workflow.
@yo' are textbooks normally published by university houses in Europe? Here in the US most textbooks come from the "big wig" publishers: Pearson, Wiley, etc.
@PaulGessler it depends. Mostly they are "self-published", because they are aimed at the specific course at the specific university. If you write a "good textbook" and publish it in "a better place", you have a hard time convincing the library to get a load of copies to be available to the students.
@GonzaloMedina I just work with a smaller publisher right now, been going for about 6 months now. It can get frustrating at times: doing figures "the right way" takes more time than this publisher is used to, just converting the author's raster graphics.
@JosephWright as I say, most bigger universities have a PH that is able to properly publish your book, but they only get it camera-ready. The quality of the result is varying.
@percusse I don't think so: the authors change their ideas often. Right now I just change the style and I can re-generate all the figures for the book. If I had to change each one individually it would take even longer.
@JosephWright that's another story, yeah. I'm really happy that one my colleague decided to write the textbook in a larger team, and asked me to consult couple things with her. We didn't agree on some typographical stuff, but my participation was certainly an improvement.
@GonzaloMedina not at the moment, sorry. But maybe in the future! It is a very small-scale operation right now, just me. But I definitely have ideas to expand it in the future.
@PaulGessler Ah I meant, the complicated parts can be imported and annotated with TikZ. I do it all the time for complicated complex analysis pictures. I would go nuts if I try to do those in pgfplots or anything else for that matter
For two things: She wanted to use the same notation on the blackboard as in the textbook. Which is fine, but it means that you use \mathbb for both the matrices and the fields (IMHO unfortunate, but I got her point). Second, she wanted the enumerate inside theorem and alike to start on the next line (I don't like it, but it's probably ok).
@percusse Yeah, markup is not everything (especially in graphics).
@percusse oh, yes, I see what you mean. Sometimes I do that, where there is something complicated with annotations on top. It hasn't happened for the books I've worked on recently.
