Q: Beamer customization - itemize not changing color

dingo_dI am trying to recreate this presentation in beamer. I finally made a proper header, but for some reason my itemize items won't change color. Here is a code sample %&latex \documentclass[xcolor={dvipsnames},hyperref={breaklinks=true}%,mathserif ,10pt]{beamer} \usepackage{amsmath,amssymb,amst...

Q: Distance between multiple lines in header of beamer template

user46573this is my first question ;). I have defined a custom header in my beamer template and I want to show multiple lines. Since \\ isn't available in beamercolorbox I had to use \newline instead. The problem is that I cannot define a distance between the lines! I cannot use \vspace or another \newlin...

@PauloCereda: Looking for upvote candidates? ;-)

@ChristianHupfer You mean the reference? I'm afraid it's from the original OP's code. :)

@PauloCereda: Yes, I know, I've tried to answer it but failed that's why I posted a follow-up question... @egreg (of course ;-)) could answer, but actually, I was quite near :-(

@ChristianHupfer Oh I've just upvoted a question of yours. :)

@PauloCereda: I feared you would :-P
@PauloCereda: The stupid thing about asking questions and accepting answers is: You get out of line of rep dividable by 5 ;-)

@ChristianHupfer :)

@PauloCereda: Now I have to post four questions ... (and getting answers to accept of course)... Let me think... Ah ... "Why is LaTeX so complicated" .... damn, it's already there ;-)

@DavidCarlisle: I assume \@ifundefined is a LaTeX primitive?

@ChristianHupfer LaTeX2e kernel command

texdef -t latex @ifundefined

\@ifundefined:
macro:#1->\expandafter \ifx \csname #1\endcsname \relax \expandafter \@firstoftwo \else \expandafter \@secondoftwo \fi

@JosephWright@TorbjørnT.: Thanks, got it too now... via \show ;-)

@FaheemMitha: tex.stackexchange.com/a/228402/3094 Although your code works, IMHO it's badly written (try, for instance, adding some real text in the document scope, since you are inside expl, which is not even properly closed). :( I highly suggest you to enclose your L3 code inside a proper macro and avoid side effect propagation.

@PauloCereda Yup

10:15 AM
@JosephWright <3

@PauloCereda By properly closed, you mean \ExplSyntaxOff? And what do you mean "some real text"?
And also, what do you mean by side effect propagation?

@FaheemMitha Yes
@FaheemMitha The point of expl3 is to provide a proper code layer, but that means you should clearly separate code from interfaces

\documentclass[12pt]{article}
\usepackage{seqsplit}
\usepackage{expl3}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\ExplSyntaxOn

\let\oldseqsplit\seqsplit% Copy \seqsplit
\renewcommand{\seqsplit}{% Redefine \seqsplit to...
  \expandafter\oldseqsplit\expandafter}% ...expand its argument before processing it

\begin{document}

\gdef \ReferencedIDs{,2014.11.14,2014.11.14,2014.11.17,2014.11.14,2014.07.18.tm,2014.11.12.tm,2013.10.05.kanjur,2013.10.05.powai,2013.10.06,2013.10.28.zhm,2013.10.17,2013.10.22,2013.10.14.ks,2013.10.06,2013.10.17,2013.10.22,2013.10.24,2013.10.28,2013.10.30,2013.11.11,2014.09.05.tm,2014.0
@FaheemMitha ^^ try. :)

desperately looking for a solution.... I spent around 20 hours for trying to solve this issue...

http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/228282/table-apa6-class-rotating-with-caption-and-table-notes

10:19 AM
@PauloCereda you added a "hello world" line. I don't see the point of that.

@FaheemMitha I can't see why you'd need \clist_remove_duplicates:N if duplicates are a problem then just don't put them in the list.

@DavidCarlisle :-)

Where would an Off line go? After the end of the expl3 code? I was meaning to ask about that. Do the expl3 conventions and regular LaTeX 2e code mix, or not?
@DavidCarlisle well, you'd have to check the list at every addition. One could do that, certainly, but it's probably more efficient to remove dupes at the end.

@FaheemMitha it is exactly the same as \makeatletter ... \makeatother you need hose around a region to use @ and you need the L3 version to use _ and :
@FaheemMitha I doubt it

@FaheemMitha You asked what a real text would be. That's it. And have you tried?

10:22 AM
@DavidCarlisle Ok. So at the end of the expl3 code then?
@PauloCereda Tried what? Adding that line?

@FaheemMitha You asked what would be a side effect. Add the text to see it.

@FaheemMitha running the document he posted, yes

@DavidCarlisle ok
Fine, how about:
\documentclass[12pt]{article}
\usepackage{seqsplit}
\usepackage{expl3}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\ExplSyntaxOn

\let\oldseqsplit\seqsplit% Copy \seqsplit
\renewcommand{\seqsplit}{% Redefine \seqsplit to...
\expandafter\oldseqsplit\expandafter}% ...expand its argument before processing it

\begin{document}

\gdef \ReferencedIDs{,2014.11.14,2014.11.14,2014.11.17,2014.11.14,2014.07.18.tm,2014.11.12.tm,2013.10.05.kanjur,2013.10.05.powai,2013.10.06,2013.10.28.zhm,2013.10.17,2013.10.22,2013.10.14.ks,2013.10.06,2013.10.17,2013.10.22,2013.10.24,2013.10.28,2013.10.30,2013.11.11,2014.09.05.tm,2014.07.
The second invocation of \seqsplit does not wrap. I don't know why.

@FaheemMitha You are adding ref so if \csname r@#1\endcsname is already defined you have seen this ref before and don't need to add it again. There is need to build a list with duplicates

@DavidCarlisle sorry, you lost me there.
And I assume you mean "there is no need".
You are presumably saying that code in the original question can be modified so dupes are not added.
E.g.

10:37 AM
@JosephWright: have you seen Khaled's fork? :) github.com/khaledhosny/biditex

\def\ref#1{%
\immediate\write\@auxout{%
\string\gappto\string\ReferencedIDs{#1,}%
}%
\oldref{#1}%
}

10:50 AM
@PauloCereda No, new to me

@JosephWright Might be interesting to keep an eye on it. :)

@PauloCereda Hmm: I wonder why he's doing this rather than working on the XeTeX primitives issue or simply using LuaTeX (or even there talking to John Plaice)

@JosephWright oh.

@FaheemMitha yes although not testing r@#1 (as that just tells you that there is a label) but you could make each ref leave a csname so you know you have seen it (this trades space for time)

@DavidCarlisle Ok. I don't know how to do that, though.
I don't think space is an issue.

11:01 AM
@PauloCereda not heard of that, what's it do (that xetex or luatex doesn't?)

@DavidCarlisle No idea, I'll try that later and report back. :)

@JosephWright did John work on biditex? (Don't see his name at biditex.sourceforge.net)

11:24 AM
@egreg what is the meaning of the \printIDs* command?

@FaheemMitha It prints the list with duplicates

@egreg Right, but I don't understand how it works.
Where is that defined?

@FaheemMitha In \NewDocumentCommand; the \IfBooleanF{#1} part is executed only if the * is not present and it's the “remove duplicates” code.

@FaheemMitha Checking for the star.
^^ what egreg just said. :)

@egreg Oh. I see.
I'm not familar with \NewDocumentCommand. I assume that is some latex3 thing.
Maybe mention that there.

11:28 AM
@FaheemMitha Take a look at xparse.

@FaheemMitha When an argument is specified as s, a * is looked for; if there is, \IfBooleanTF(#1} follows the true branch (in this case it's the first argument, so #1). Since we do nothing when the * is given, it's easier using \IfBooleanF{#1} that has only the false branch.

@egreg In a keynote I gave, I called it nif. :P

@egreg is this documented in interfaces3?

@FaheemMitha No, in xparse.pdf

@FaheemMitha: \NewDocumentCommand is quite 'easy' to use, for standard commands

11:41 AM

@egreg: how are you feeling today? Today is the doctor's appointment, isn't it?
I heard doctors are afraid of apples. :)

@PauloCereda All going well. At least, this is what the surgeon said.

@egreg Yay!

@PauloCereda: One apple a day keeps the doctor away, two apples a day keep two doctors away (bad German joke :-P)

@ChristianHupfer ooh I see a pattern. :)

@PauloCereda: Really? :D

11:48 AM
@ChristianHupfer Das Apple a day keeps das Doktor away! :)

@PauloCereda: I am quite fascinated about your obsession of the German article "das" ;-)
@egreg: I hope you'll feel better soon

@ChristianHupfer I heard it's neutral, so I use it in order to avoid getting something wrong. :) But I get then wrong anyway. :)

@PauloCereda: I think there are far more German nouns being female or male than neutral genus

@ChristianHupfer I must: exams tomorrow. :)

@ChristianHupfer :) In Portuguese we have masculine and feminine articles only, so the neuter thingy is quite new for me. :) Amusingly, I found some words are masculine for you and feminine for me; e.g, der Apfel in Portuguese is a maçã, so if I had to put an article before Apfel considering my acquired grammatical knowledge (based on Portuguese), I'd go with die Apfel (then an apple is killed!), because maçã is feminine in Portuguese. :)

11:58 AM
@PauloCereda: It's vice versa if I have to learn French or Spanish ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Indeed. :)

@egreg... or Italian ;-)

@DavidCarlisle Don't think so: was thinking about primitive he suggested recently

@JosephWright I... I don't know!

12:50 PM
@JosephWright currently I have build-config.lua saying checkengines = {"xetex","etex"} (and then I fail) do you think we should check in xetex tlg so it passes (even if the tests are nonsense under xetex as they use inputenc?)

1:01 PM
@DavidCarlisle Sounds reasonable: at least we then have a clear id of where we have failures

@yo' Bonjour! Je vous en prie.
:)

@JosephWright OK I'll look through my failures and if they just look like inputenc nonsense rather than an actual unexpected behaviour I'll check them in as xetex.tlg (I think I did that before but no harm to check again:-)

1:20 PM
@JosephWright I don't have a problem with checking in ones that have a warning saying "dont use inputenc" but is it ok to check in tlb0380 as passed (this explicitly sets T1 fontenc then checks all the space factor codes). I supposed it's passed as in "best we can do this time" but if we check them in it means at some point we need to go through all the xetex tlg again and see why they are different. perhaps that's what you meant by " clear idea of where we have failures"

@DavidCarlisle Yes: we'll know we have a set of .xetex.tlg files that still need thinking about

@JosephWright Ok I'll stop looking and check them in:-)

Till later on

yo'
@PauloCereda that didn't quite make sense. Better would be: Salut! Oui, bien sûr! :)

A: How to create a bracket-ing √-Operator?

David CarlisleIf you let the \sqrt grow large it might be hard to avoid a horizontal notch at the top, but... \documentclass{article} \usepackage{mathtools} \begin{document} \[ \sqrt{\frac{1}{\sqrt{\frac{1}{\sqrt{x}}}}} \] \newcommand\bsqrt[2][]{% \sqrt[{#1}]{\vphantom{\left[#2\right]}}\left[#2\right]% } ...

@Johannes_B something about trimming glue on legs. I don't think questions about prosthetic limbs are on topic.
@egreg I hope so. It's a "don't do that or it will look like this" answer...

@DavidCarlisle I am still amazed by tex.stackexchange.com/questions/228224/…

@egreg It's like planting a tree. :) After all, it's a root. :)
How can I draw a duckly ducky diagram with a duck running in the loop with DuckMF?

@egreg: :D :D :D
@Johannes_B is difficult to answer as it appears that not at lot of QCD/QED physicists are here on TeX.SX! It's about 15 years ago I've done such graphs (by hand ;-)) for the last time.

@PauloCereda We could discover a new elementary particle: the duckon.

@ChristianHupfer Das Skalarrunningloopvacuumpolarizaktiondiagram! :)
@egreg ooooooh! <3

2:04 PM
@egreg: Is there an anti-particle? The anti-duckon then? ;-) Pair annihilation of a duck(on) and an anti-duck(on) ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Oh no!
Leave the poor duckon be. :)

@ChristianHupfer Like the photon, the duckon is its own antiparticle.

@egreg that seems like a contradiction but :)

@ChristianHupfer Being the author of a Feynman diagram related package, I know absolutely nothing about them.

@egreg: ... never used, but perhaps you could answer tex.stackexchange.com/questions/228423/…

2:18 PM
Hi to all! Is there some way to make closer superscripts number in this case \lim_{n \to \infty} \left(\frac{1+n}{2+n}\right)^{-\frac{n}{2}-1} I hope you understand me {-\frac{n}{2}-1} is problem, I would like if that can be more shifted in left (oh, that my splendid english...)

@Cortizol Little advice, if you make your example compilable, and we can just copy/passte/compile, you chance of quick help increases.
For example, i am too lazy to copy the code and add documentclass, and stuff like that. But i would copy a compilable example without thinking.

Well, here you go (but it's too trivial):
\documentclass{article}

\begin{document}

\[\lim_{n \to \infty} \left(\frac{1+n}{2+n}\right)^{-\frac{n}{2}-1}\]

\end{document}
Maybe I can do this with \hspace{}, I didn't try.
Yap, that works, but that probably is not good solution

2:35 PM
hi there, its been a while ;) good to be back

@ChristianHupfer I get the correct picture, I believe. Added a comment
@Cortizol ^{\!-\frac{n}{2}-1}

@egreg How is everything now?

@Rico Hi, are there any news on tex.stackexchange.com/questions/180424/…?
@Rico I am on a special mission to make this place a bit more tidy.

@egreg: Thanks.... looks a little strange, the picture ... (from a Physicist's view ;-))

@Johannes_B let me have a look
@Johannes_B i guess tex.stackexchange.com/questions/48193/… as well as @PauloCereda Blog post should both solve the issue.

2:45 PM
@Rico So you never finished that and can't write a self-answer? Schade. We could close as a dupe tex.stackexchange.com/questions/48193/…

@Johannes_B the problem resolved itself as the customer canceled the job. Since I never wrote an actual script I would say we could close it as a dupe

@egreg awwww

@Rico Voted.
@Rico Long time no see on TeXwelt either.

@Johannes_B right. Had a lot to do for the uni. And did a whole redesign of my own blog. I'm thinking of writing a new one for TeXwelt. Any suggestions on topic?

@Cortizol you can hide the width of a subscript with _{\mathclap{n\to\infty}} (mathtools package)

2:52 PM
@Rico Why should i never search for templates?
;-)

@Johannes_B like tex templates? because its a f***ing pain in the ass to fit them to your needs
;)

@Rico Exactly.

mh how about pubCSS as an alternative? I'm currently looking for a parser TeX-> PubCSS maybe I write one myself.
@Johannes_B looks like the texwelt blog definitely needs some new content

@Rico depends what you expect as input, just parsing the occasional \ or {} is easy but if you want to convert real world documents loading some weird journal class and tikz and expl3 it gets harder, which is why tex4ht and latexml end up being complicated

@DavidCarlisle one could imagine to copy only the result of tikz...

3:03 PM
Asked for clarification, he changed the names, but didn't explain what he really wants. It is just as unclear as before for me. Does anybody understand what he is trying to achieve and where?

Q: To visualise Schematic Intersections of Sections over Parts

MasiAssume you have Parts Eggs Bars Some of Eggs belong too to Bars. I can visualise this by a venn diagram, however I would like show this kind of structure in colours too. Assume you have Bacteria which belong to Eggs and Bars or any combination Mars (in both groups) Kinder (in both groups)...

@Rico copy as what though? A bitmap looks rubbish and converting to svg is still not completely done (although people working on it)

@DavidCarlisle fair point.

yo'
@DavidCarlisle pdf and pdf2svg, but that's far beyond optimal (and bug-free)

@yo' yes that's a possibility but technically it's going 3 sides round a square, pretty much all the drawing primitives in pgf are supported in svg (or canvas) so it ought to be able to go straight to that rather than via pdf.

@Johannes_B sounds like we wants to color groups but I don't understand the way or logic he's trying to group them

3:16 PM
@Rico Same here. I don't know where color (or keyword?) should be typeset. The thing is, i bet he doesn't know either and asks for suggestions. But i don't know what the general goal is.

@Johannes_B xD classic
@Johannes_B his tags are confusing me. is this question about data visualisation or about document structure?

@Rico No ducking idea, thats why i came here. I was the first confused guy.

yo'
3:37 PM
@DavidCarlisle I know.

@JosephWright ! LaTeX Error: File xetex.def' not found.`

yo'
@DavidCarlisle double backquotes ;)

@yo' that's the least of the problems:-)

@Johannes_B: Perhaps the OP should include the image instead of the table itself? ;-)

yo'
@DavidCarlisle :-)

3:51 PM
@DavidCarlisle Tools?
@DavidCarlisle Hmm, we might need to fix that too!
@DavidCarlisle I guess the issue here is that we don't currently look after the XeTeX driver. Perhaps just alter the config for base at present?

@JosephWright graphics, top level buid ctan just quietly hangs but if you run texlua build.lua check tlb3873 in graphics you get the error. I tried a couple of things but couldn't see immediate fix other than ping you

@DavidCarlisle Sounds about right: the build check routine is meant to be 'quiet' when running all tests mainly as I don't think scrolling all of the output is that helpful. I find it better to focus on issue tests as and when I need to
@DavidCarlisle Like I say, this is another thing I suspect we need to sort out: xetex.def is a 'community' effort at present (i.e. something got written and used with minimal oversight!)

@JosephWright yes but I left it running and came back and it had got stuck with no obvious error:-) build.lua in base does dofile (maindir .. "/build-config.lua") would it need to look for its own config file?

@egreg -- in a comment to this answer Changing the apperance of equation numbers with amsmath you say "This shows a weakness of amsmath: the same command \tagform@ is used for two distinct purposes; it's true that frequently the appearance of the equation number is the same, but this can't be taken for granted. ..." not sure what you mean; this is used only for equation numbers, not \ref. please explain.

@JosephWright short term is there anywhere i can copy in xetex.def so it just works I thought maindir/support would work (where test2e is but apparently not)

3:58 PM
@DavidCarlisle Not really: in general I do overrides by using the foo = foo or ... construct for Lua
@DavidCarlisle I can adjust if you want
@DavidCarlisle Exactly the right place :-)
@DavidCarlisle Also add to checksuppfiles list

@JosephWright ah, that I didn't do
@JosephWright checksuppfiles was the key thanks, I'm back on track

@DavidCarlisle It's strictly opt-in to avoid any unexpected files being included

@JosephWright yes That's what I expected but i was looking for ".def" (as it seems to work with etex but didn't see dvips.def or pdftex.def ?)

4:25 PM
@DavidCarlisle dvips.def is extracted from drivers.dtx so is team code, and as the tests are in DVI mode they don't look for pdfmode.def
@DavidCarlisle (Another reason expl3 now uses it's own drivers: they are all 'ours' and a known quantity)

@JosephWright yes that came to me after I wrote the above (just not while I was looking around your lua code unfortunately:-)
@JosephWright it slows it down quite a bit so perhaps i won't check in the checkengines = {"xetex","etex"} but I want to check that build ctan works with that before checking in the additional tlg. It's running now (again;-)

@DavidCarlisle Fine with me but I guess at some stage we have to bite this one
@DavidCarlisle Do you want to raise the drivers issue on the team list? ;-)

@JosephWright my plan was to get the thing to pass then check in extex.def in to support along with the xetex.tlg then mail to say what I'd done

@DavidCarlisle Cool

  tlxs01l
  tlxs01p
@JosephWright got to there^^ :-)

4:58 PM
@DavidCarlisle @egreg Thanks guys!

@Cortizol did we do something? :-)

@barbarabeeton The \tagform@ macro is used both in \tag and \eqref.
\newcommand{\eqref}[1]{\textup{\tagform@{\ref{#1}}}}
\def\maketag@@{\@ifstar\maketag@@@\tagform@}
@barbarabeeton ^^^

@egreg -- thanks. i'll put this on the list to be looked at next time amsmath is opened up for inspection/upgrade. (i sure hope that happens before i retire.)

@barbarabeeton Andrew's answer actually shows a case where this would be useful. I think that looking for \tagform@ you can find other cases on the site. It has been popular for some time, IIRC.

@JosephWright you got mail :-)

6:11 PM
Cup of Earl Grey! :)
Now I need a monocle and a tophat. :)

yo'
@PauloCereda why a monocle?

@yo' ^^

@yo' awww <3

yo'
I'm still lost :(

@DavidCarlisle -- looks like he's in his pajamas ... with boutonniere even!

6:26 PM
@JosephWright doc/ltnews.pdf builds but ltnews22 (only) has no table of contents?

@DavidCarlisle Will look

yo'
@barbarabeeton the other male characters give a similar impression, only the lady behaves like a dog.

@DavidCarlisle: Playing Minecraft on my Mac. :)

@PauloCereda M discovered mods last week now he has to learn how to control 1001 new block types

@DavidCarlisle OMG
@DavidCarlisle: What do you guys use to apply them?

6:29 PM
@PauloCereda er download jar file from wherever drop into .minecraft/mods restart and see what's changed...

@DavidCarlisle Cool! So now Minecraft does have official mod support!
In the past, I had to insert the classes into the minecraft.jar file.

@PauloCereda It always did didn't it? Ah yes but all the mods he's used so far use "forge" which uses its own class loader and avoids the need to mess with the main jar

@DavidCarlisle Hmm that I don't know. :) Any link to help me? :)

@PauloCereda files.minecraftforge.net we got the one for minecraft 1.8 but actually had to go back and get 1.7.10 as most of the mods available seem to use that still then he's got railcraft and lots o mobs which both sit on that forge base

@DavidCarlisle Thanks! I'll take a look!

6:40 PM
@PauloCereda hardest part was downloading the mods, they all seem to use spurious ad-laden spoofware sites where every link that says "download" is the wrong thing, and you have to carefully click on the actual filename to trigger a download of the file you want.

7:05 PM
@DavidCarlisle I'll try to install it right now. :)

@JosephWright You there?

@Anthony Yes

Is there an easy way to display the coordinate values on a plot in pgfplots?
(Also thanks for showing me it, the plots are amazing)
Oof, actually I found something.
This: \addplot[mark=*] coordinates {(.58,1.3)} node[pin=180:{$(.58,1.3)$}]{} ;

7:25 PM
@DavidCarlisle I've found the issue with ltnews

@JosephWright thanks
@JosephWright I made a test file for the lmtt bug but can't really add it as it depends on lmodern package setup...

@DavidCarlisle !

@ChristianHupfer That seems like a good idea.

@JosephWright I'm curious about the review queues and perhaps you could help me here. How exactly does a question go into a review queue? Let's say I vote to close a question; does it mean that that question will immediately go to the "Close" queue for some users (other than me)?

7:42 PM
@GonzaloMedina Yes

@JosephWright And those other users are randomly selected?

@GonzaloMedina No, anyone with review privs could see them

@JosephWright Hmm... but not every user with review privs will be notified, is that right? I guess that explains a lot.

yo'
@GonzaloMedina There're couple problems with the queues. First, the brown number is only shown when there're at least 3 items in the queue. Second, especially the FP queue does not receive all first posts, for whatever reason. Third, in the FP queue, if someone votes only with no other activity, it counts as reviewed and doesn't show to more users.

7:59 PM
I've always wondered- and I figure you all would know the answer. How do book authors make such nice looking photos? Something like a spinning top in a physics book, or a picture of an atom... I know LaTeX has packages for some basic pictures, but what about for the more complicated ones?

@Anthony search for pstricks or tikz-pgf on the site. They can be made as complicated as you dare... ;-)

@yo' Yes, I've noticed some problems too.

@PaulGessler Do you think that's what textbook authors use?

Wow, another feyn* question. What is going on?

yo'
@GonzaloMedina it's not optimal. I've got a MSE feature request in mind, but posting requests there takes some consideration and time, which I'm not gonna devote to it now :)

8:07 PM

@Anthony in my experience, most textbook authors don't produce the final figures used in a textbook.

@PaulGessler That makes sense. Do you know how I would make one like the one I just linked?

That's done by the publisher or some contractor thereof

@Johannes_B Goodness only knows
@Anthony Very much varies

@PaulGessler Actually I think this answer talks about it- going to read it in a bit: physics.stackexchange.com/questions/401/…
@JosephWright I see.

8:09 PM
@Anthony I was actually going to say it looked like metapost, but it's hard to tell. Now you know. :-)
I mentioned pstricks and tikz-pgf, but there's also Metapost and Asymptote, etc.

yo'
@PaulGessler you live in an ideal world :D Here, if you wanna make a textbook, you give the PDF (!) file to the university Publishing House. There's no post-production. Unfortunately.

Oh metapost is a package?
lol
I see. Well thanks!

@yo' well that's why I said "in my experience": I am making money doing just that right now. And what I get from the authors is usually .... well, to put it nicely.... not fit for publication.

yo'
@PaulGessler that's how most our textbooks look like: to vomit of on.

@yo' Depends very much on your area I suspect: it's one thing to expect me to do good chemistry figures, quite another for say engineering
@PaulGessler What area?

yo'
8:14 PM
@JosephWright well, the university should be willing to pay for the post-production. They are not. It took a lot of convincing to make the university journal get proper typesetting workflow.

@PaulGessler So you typeset/publish scientific books?

@yo' are textbooks normally published by university houses in Europe? Here in the US most textbooks come from the "big wig" publishers: Pearson, Wiley, etc.

@yo' I've no idea about university press work I'm afraid, just the obvious candidates

yo'
@PaulGessler it depends. Mostly they are "self-published", because they are aimed at the specific course at the specific university. If you write a "good textbook" and publish it in "a better place", you have a hard time convincing the library to get a load of copies to be available to the students.

@GonzaloMedina I just work with a smaller publisher right now, been going for about 6 months now. It can get frustrating at times: doing figures "the right way" takes more time than this publisher is used to, just converting the author's raster graphics.

8:17 PM
@yo' I've heard this is the way in central Europe: not something I've directly come across

yo'
@JosephWright as I say, most bigger universities have a PH that is able to properly publish your book, but they only get it camera-ready. The quality of the result is varying.

@PaulGessler Switch to Inkscape :)

@JosephWright mostly engineering thus far. But all fields within: sometimes I learn interesting things! :-)
@percusse never :-p

@PaulGessler Are you hiring? :-)

@PaulGessler It will make your boss happy

8:20 PM
@yo' Not to mention the content!

@percusse I don't think so: the authors change their ideas often. Right now I just change the style and I can re-generate all the figures for the book. If I had to change each one individually it would take even longer.

yo'
@JosephWright that's another story, yeah. I'm really happy that one my colleague decided to write the textbook in a larger team, and asked me to consult couple things with her. We didn't agree on some typographical stuff, but my participation was certainly an improvement.

@GonzaloMedina not at the moment, sorry. But maybe in the future! It is a very small-scale operation right now, just me. But I definitely have ideas to expand it in the future.

@PaulGessler Ah I meant, the complicated parts can be imported and annotated with TikZ. I do it all the time for complicated complex analysis pictures. I would go nuts if I try to do those in pgfplots or anything else for that matter

yo'
For two things: She wanted to use the same notation on the blackboard as in the textbook. Which is fine, but it means that you use \mathbb for both the matrices and the fields (IMHO unfortunate, but I got her point). Second, she wanted the enumerate inside theorem and alike to start on the next line (I don't like it, but it's probably ok).
@percusse Yeah, markup is not everything (especially in graphics).

8:23 PM
@PaulGessler I see. Let me know if some of your ideas could include me :-) I don't really know why, but that kind of work has always atracted me.

@percusse oh, yes, I see what you mean. Sometimes I do that, where there is something complicated with annotations on top. It hasn't happened for the books I've worked on recently.

@percusse tsk tsk ;)

yo'
I'm so happy to be in TCS :) most figures I make are either graphs/automata (easy peasy), or tilings (sage and automatic generation of tikz code FTW :D )

@GonzaloMedina will keep it in mind, definitely. :-)

Have to leave. Bye, everyone!

@Johannes_B finally finished your long lunch, I see. ;-) :-)

@PaulGessler I bet it was delicious :-p

@GonzaloMedina I want to keep my hair on my head :)
Hack the most ridiculous TikZ macro 2-3 votes. Draw a triangle 17 votes.

@percusse We had this discussion already. The voting system seems unfair at times ;-)

@percusse LOL, so true. I think many of us have been on both sides of that coin.

8:42 PM
@Johannes_B I remember having this discussion even with Caramdir :) It still hurts

@percusse One of the simpest questin on main, i got 8 upvotes tex.stackexchange.com/questions/218948/…
Others, maybe an hour of work, thinking about what could be done, providing a nice solution. Maybe just one upvote, even left behind the OP.

@Johannes_B I wasted about 1.5 months for a complex number library for TikZ then Till Tantau switched to Lua :)
I killed a lot of kittens with that code.

@percusse Sorry, but i am laughing right now. Must have felt frustrating.

@Johannes_B Not really :) I am converting it to rep points little by little

percusse....converting TikZ manual to rep points since 2011

@percusse Is it here on site?

@Johannes_B Nope, I'm using nonlinear transformations so it is really obsolete code now.

@percusse Do we have a This is f***ing floating and it is supposed to move your *ducking* objects around-question we can link to?

@Johannes_B Anything with
I don't even remember the package name haha

@percusse Sorry for the multiple pings. Thos asterisks were ... Argh :-)

8:54 PM
@Johannes_B Are you trying to write fucking?

@percusse The package is indeed called capt-of ;-)
@percusse Pssst :-p

@Johannes_B This is for you :D
