12:08 AM
i've been making tex documents for physics and my teacher was really impressed with this pgfplots graph I made, and asked for a copy

12:34 AM
also, does anyone know how to have only one axis with an arrow in pgfplots? as in, have the x axis with an arrow but no arrow on the y one

12:53 AM
@avghighschoolstudent: axis y line=none

wouldn't that make the entire axis line invisible? I'm just trying to get the arrow to be invisible

@avghighschoolstudent: untested: y axis line style={-}

awesome! here's the graph if you're interested puu.sh/dtCrm/baa9a18bf0.png

@avghighschoolstudent Nice. You may share the code too ;-)

it's the same thing as tex.stackexchange.com/a/217604/67575 more or less, but good idea about sharing it

1:24 AM
@avghighschoolstudent +1. It will be nice if you could add the full code starting from \documentclass{...} and ending at end{document}
@SeanAllred What does sx.el do?

1:56 AM
@HarishKumar it is a stack exchange client for Emacs
You can read and write questions, answers, and comments, but we'll be adding features once it's publicly tested
s/once/as/

2:17 AM
@SeanAllred Looks good then. So we can write code compile etc all at one place without copy pasting?

2:31 AM
@HarishKumar Exactly :)
The only thing that's notably missing right now is a solution for tag completion – there is a hard question behind that missing feature. But for answering questions, I don't think there is a better way to do it if you're comfortable with emacs :)
(I'm probably biased)

@SeanAllred: you're comfortable with emacs... That part I doubt. I started learning but you know.... :-)

@HarishKumar Ohhhh, come on :) It's a modal client, so it's pretty easy :)

@SeanAllred sx.el doesn't show up with mermalade! My emacs is configured only for mermalade. How do I add it with the following?
(add-to-list 'package-archives
    '("marmalade" .
      "http://marmalade-repo.org/packages/"))
(package-initialize)
I am zero with lisp :(

@HarishKumar vvv
(add-to-list 'package-archives
             '("melpa" . "http://melpa.org/packages/") t)

@SeanAllred Let me try!..
@SeanAllred Yes!. Now I have to learn how to use it. Looks like a long journey ;-)

2:42 AM
@HarishKumar :D

@SeanAllred :-)

sx-tab-frontpage will get you there. jk to go up/down (or np to do it without viewing, RET to view) ud upvote/downvote, etc. etc. As usual, C-h m will be your guide :)

@SeanAllred Thanks...
Opening TLS connection to `api.stackexchange.com'...done
if: Headers missing; response corrupt

@HarishKumar D:

@SeanAllred Now why that happens? That is what I was talking :P

2:47 AM
That's very strange.
@HarishKumar I suppose I'll try to reproduce, but I don't think I'll be able to. Would you mind posting a new issue on github.com/vermiculus/sx.el?
Very strange that the headers would be missing, but I'm glad I put that check in there right about now

@SeanAllred That may be my installation has weird things in .emacs. I didn't/don't know what I was doing while adding lines there :) I added latex preview pane, solarized, reftex and very few other minor things but I have lot of problems...

@HarishKumar a LaTeX preview pane?
solarized is a theme, so that shouldn't have any effect

@SeanAllred Yes. But then it is on windows so expect problems. :P

@HarishKumar Mmmm… yeah you might have problems :(
Do you have curl installed?

@SeanAllred Yes I have.

2:57 AM
We were considering having a use-curl-p but we haven't had the need

back from a short night trip, and off to bed. See ya!

I'll make this a priority then :)
I forgot that url doesn't really work on windows

@SeanAllred Is it? I will check on curl and get back to you later today.
BTW I installed emacs from here: vgoulet.act.ulaval.ca/en/emacs/windows

@HarishKumar Should be nothing wrong with a prepackaged emacs :) and yeah I just remember having problems years back with my windows box
Though I have always used straight GNU emacs
(with msys for other utils)

4:05 AM
@SeanAllred May be my case is too localised (poor me being on windows) :)

4:21 AM
@HarishKumar Not at all :) Windows isn't exactly a small portion of our target demographic :)

Q: Input/Output primitives of TeX

MatteoI'd like to write some simple macros for handling things like cross-reference, to use them in plain TeX. (I know there are already macros devoted to this, like the ones present in Eplain, but I would like to try something different by myself.) So I need to know how to read from a file and how to...

@egreg I've tried to answer: there are only two primitives here so it's not so bad

@JosephWright I added a note about the expansion timing

@egreg Yes, saw that
@SamWhited Huh?

@JosephWright I won't start a discussion on Meta (I guess you understand what I'm talking about) as somebody would think it's just a quarrel between me and him. But there's another example: it's absurd showing an example of a Plain TeX table that's many levels below what booktabs and siunitx can do without any hassle (as Heiko demonstrated).

@egreg We have a long-standing position as a site that answers can use alternative formats (so a ConTeXt answer to a LaTeX question is OK, etc.).
@egreg I of course do know what you mean
@egreg The position 'each TeX user should be a TeX programmer' is not one I take but it is not 'abusive': after all, DEK would take much the same line I think

3:18 PM
@JosephWright Yes, but the “alternative” answer should produce output of the same quality.

@egreg That is reasonable, yes

@JosephWright Which is not true for LaTeX users.

@egreg Ah, but they are TeX users so ....

@JosephWright I added the output.

@egreg There are quite a lot of plain users who really don't like the idea of wrapping up TeX at all as LaTeX (or I guess ConTeXt)
@egreg In any case, the question of output, etc. comes down to voting

3:27 PM
Is there a way to make an itemize environment in the left beamer column stand completely still? When having equations (with align) or images in the right column, the itemize seem to move up and down. Obviously, that's where TeX feel like it should be, but is there a way to force it to be stationary?

@Argo MWE?
@SamWhited Given the stage of the year, not much point worrying about it!

4:00 PM
@StefanKottwitz I see our friend with the plot issues continues to be interesting

@JosephWright do you mind getting an extended example? Say, a zip-file containing a bunch of images and the tex-file

@Argo Fine

@JosephWright @StefanKottwitz Reading the comments here at TeX.SX, i was really really shocked. I couldn't have been that patient.

@Johannes_B Which comments?

4:09 PM
@JosephWright tweaking a plot and others »Don't give advice, give code«

I got TAOCP as an ebook! Yay!

Got it @JosephWright
?

@Argo Which page am I looking at?

Well all the pages where there's an itemize in the left column and a series of images/equations in the right column

4:34 PM
@SamWhited I know to use Google, but IMHO it is asymmetric that all another software mentioned here have a link but this amazing software mentioned in this answer hasn't. — wipet 10 mins ago

@Argo Your material in the right-hand column has variable height and sometimes excess width
@Argo I'd consider adding [t] to the frames to top-align material, plus perhaps [T] to the columns environments to top-align within them
@Argo Alternatively, look at things like overlayenv to fix the height considered for the right-hand column

@JosephWright Sorry to bother you, but i think somebody should know about this. tex.stackexchange.com/questions/217939/…

@Johannes_B Oh good

Dear Jack LOL

@JosephWright I cannot see deleted Qs. Is this tex.stackexchange.com/questions/217729/… the same account as the one linked to a few minutes ago?

4:47 PM
@Johannes_B Yes

4:57 PM
Signing off for a bit, see you guys.

5:51 PM
@JosephWright I provided answers at his topic at LC, hopefully it helped, it seemed today

6:10 PM
@StefanKottwitz I'd seen that

6:36 PM
I am not sure where with multicols, the enumeration list are being chooped off at the end of the page. I thought to ask here first before posting question on main board. Can I post my example here? it is one page. self contained.
\documentclass[10pt,notitlepage]{article}%

\usepackage{times}
\usepackage{amsmath}
\usepackage{amsfonts}
\usepackage{amssymb}
\usepackage{graphicx}%
\usepackage{multicol}
\usepackage{hyperref}

%\let\ifloadgeometry\iffalse
%\input{commonlatex}
\usepackage[normalem]{ulem}
\usepackage[margin={3mm}]{geometry}%
\setlength{\columnsep}{3mm}
\setlength{\columnseprule}{.01pt} %thickness
\raggedcolumns

\begin{document}
\begin{multicols}{2}
%
\uline{Fourier Transform formulas}
\begin{align*}
\hat{u}(k)         & =  \int_{-\infty}^{\infty} u(x) e^{-i k x} \,dx \\
When I compile the above, I get this pdf:
There is one \item not showing at the end there. Should not this flow to next page?

7:04 PM
@JosephWright I could sort of solve it by changing the width of the left column (since it only need, say, 0.3\textwidth, but the it still won't stay stationary. Is there a way to "force" itemize to start at a point and then fill downwards (instead of centering the whole list, which will change the location of the first item)?

@Nasser Not on my machine: I get items 2 and 3 on page 2, followed by the references.

@Argo As I said, you can top-align things. The beamer class 'knows' centring vertically and vertical top alignment

@Nasser Same result as @egreg.

@Nasser Why \usepackage{times} that's been obsolete for 20+ years?

@egreg wow! may be then I have a bug in my latexpdf? let me compile it on Linux using texlive. The above was compiled on windows.

7:07 PM
@Nasser It's a bug in SWP, I guess.

@egreg I wrote the above by hand! I am trying to move away from SW
So I can learn Latex.
I am not using SW at all to compile this. I am on windows using miktex in texstudio
Will try linux+texlive on same file...

@Nasser So, first things first: LaTeX. :)

bug confirmed. THere is a problem with miktex pdflatex
same file I posted. Compiled on linux ok. On windows I get chopped off page
Should I post this on main board?

7:23 PM
@Nasser IMHO if it's a legit bug, little a question can do about it. Maybe a direct bug report somewhere.

@Nasser \listfiles
@PauloCereda File diffs

@JosephWright Ah. :) Outdated stuff.
Possibly. :)

@JosephWright here is log file with \listfiles added. This miktex/texstudio log file. copy pasted

@Nasser Yes, that's rather the point

Here is the linux version

7:28 PM
@JosephWright I had a crazy idea. Wait for it in my pull request of l3build. :)

Look at keyval, for instance.
:)

@Nasser Different LaTeX/tools/required versions
@Nasser Frank Mittelbach has made some changes to multicol

For Miktex, multicol.sty 2011/06/27 v1.7a multicolumn formatting (FMi) and for Texlive, it is multicol.sty 2014/04/23 v1.8e multicolumn formatting (FMi)

Mac users: I got my Apple TV on Thursday. That thing is pretty cool. All my iDevices (Macs, tablets) were fully integrated, automatically. Very, very nice. :)

7:33 PM
I'll try to update Miketex now to see if it will get the updated multicols package

@Nasser Latest is 1.8i

@JosephWright I am running miktex update manager now, hopefully it will find the latest

Yay, chips!
(I suppose you guys don't call them French fries :P)

@PauloCereda Nice :-)

@JosephWright I'd share, but I love chips. :P

7:55 PM
thanks everyone. Problem fixed. Afterupdating miktex, now the pdf looks the same as on Linux texlive 2014. Now the log file says multicol.sty 2014/10/28 v1.8i multicolumn formatting (FMi) on windows.
So the problem was with old multicols package used by miktex 2.9
@egreg You said "Why \usepackage{times} that's been obsolete for 20+ years?" I did not know it is old. I started using it few months ago. It makes the fonts more dark and more dense and it looks better to me when I print it, than the default fonts (little too light). if you recommend another font/package, I can do try that.

8:23 PM
@Nasser As you can clearly see, the math font is completely different from and clashing with the text font; if you like Times, do \usepackage{newtxtext,newtxmath}.

Good maen

@egreg thanks. I replaced times with \usepackage{newtxtext,newtxmath}, will try those from now on and see how it works out.
Times and \usepackage{newtxtext,newtxmath} also use less space than the default font. Here is an example. One line from the page I have. Notice how it squeezed one extra word in there
same document. Multicols. So these packages saves paper and trees. So they are good for the environment also.

8:52 PM
@egreg \let\phantom\relax is simpler:-)

@DavidCarlisle Yes.
You can simply do \let\phantom\relax inside the cycle code, because they are performed in a group. — egreg 15 secs ago
@DavidCarlisle And an expl3 version was in the works.

May i ask anyboday around, how many questions this user has asked (and obviously deleted after getting help) -> tex.stackexchange.com/users/67733/user67733

@Johannes_B A few but perhaps not as many as you think

@DavidCarlisle Here vvvv
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{tikz,xstring}

\begin{document}

\def\result{}
\foreach \i in {1,...,6}{%
  \let\phantom\relax
  \StrChar{12345}{\i}[\c]%
  \ifx\c\empty
    \def\c{\phantom{0}}%
  \fi
  \xdef\result{\result\c}}
\show\result

\stop

@Johannes_B I will discuss this with @StefanKottwitz and Martin (who's away for a few days)

9:07 PM
@Johannes_B: I got that in my First Post review queue... David wrote a comment about the OP's obsession to delete the questions, but that comment vanished...

@JosephWright @ChristianHupfer I think this is just annoying. I can understand that someone wants to get help with his problems. But the site is not for that solely, but to provide answers that others can find as well.
This is not on the way he seeks for help (which i don't want to discuss).

@Johannes_B I know :-)
@Johannes_B I know that too
@Johannes_B This is one which needs some thought

@JosephWright I know the three of you are doing a good job and will come to reasonable decision.

@egreg well surprise surprise:-)
@ChristianHupfer I was a bit annoyed as his previous question was almost reasonable and I got as far as posting an answer into the answer box when he deleted it. But the new one wasn't really exactly the same code so i deleted the comment.

@DavidCarlisle: I see, I was about to flag (the question, not the comment ;-)), but as the post was alright (you edited in between, I assume), I had no reason to flag ... the OP's behaviour however is annoying, indeed

9:46 PM
@Johannes_B: Ooops, he did it again (?) tex.stackexchange.com/questions/217981/mirror-symmetry

@ChristianHupfer Indeed
@ChristianHupfer I don't understand the question

@ChristianHupfer @DavidCarlisle @JosephWright I kinda feel sorry for him.

@Johannes_B I'm not sure: I don't know if the language issue is all that is going on
@Johannes_B I've suggested letting us know what his native language is (I can guess from the private data, but obviously can't use that)

@JosephWright It is not, Stefan already told him to read some basic literature. I think, it is just acting in a hurry.

@Johannes_B Yes, which limits my sympathy

9:54 PM

@JosephWright There are user groups or support forums in soo many languages. There must be something for him.

@Johannes_B Possibly

@JosephWright Sorry, I pushed the wrong button when flagging.

@egreg @JosephWright Spam.

9:55 PM
@ChristianHupfer Zapped

@Johannes_B: I suppose, the OP wants to have a tableau of figures, the left one being a mirror image of the right one (and vice versa)?

@ChristianHupfer A mirror here makes no sense, so I have no idea

@JosephWright the deleted question had four graphs of different sizes, so i guess he just wants then scaled to same size but who knows:-)

@JosephWright: It's a Monty Python member: "We delete this question just to annoy you" ;-)

@ChristianHupfer I will not buy this question, it is scratched

10:02 PM
@DavidCarlisle I don't have enough rep to see deleted questions. How am i supposed to help him? I guess i will drink my beer here in the students club until the phone call arrives.

@Johannes_B: Phone call? Did I miss something this day?

@JosephWright The question itself is a bit dubious: I added a comment on possible off-topic.

@ChristianHupfer A friend of mine is pregnant, and when the phone call comes, i take care of their little daughter, while her sibling is born.

@Johannes_B: I can't see deleted questions as well, only deleted answers

I am becoming uncle again this night. :-)

10:04 PM
@egreg Yes

@Johannes_B: Ah, well then... I hope, anything will be fine

@ChristianHupfer Sure it will be fine. :-)

@Johannes_B: Uncle? It's your brother's wife/girl friend?

@ChristianHupfer one of the most sweet things i ever heard in my life: »Onkel hachie hat Geburtstag« and »Onkel hachie is Geburtstagskind« by a two-yo

@Johannes_B you probably can but they are hard to find (as the links are removed) but since I had the answer in a tab (which i couldn't post as it was deleted) I had the url to it anyway.

10:06 PM
@ChristianHupfer No, just like one uses the word uncle. No relatives.

@Johannes_B: Abusing words, Johannes :D
@Johannes_B: I can't become'uncle' ... I have got no sisters or brothers :-( The only nickname I have is 'Evil teacher' :D

@ChristianHupfer Don't you have that down there? I remember my kindergarden techers: Tante Karin, Tante Martina, ...
@ChristianHupfer No sisters, no brothers as well. But i am »uncle hachie« a few times by now.
@ChristianHupfer btw: Evil teacher sounds like a good band name.

@Johannes_B: Well, I could become 'godfather' somehow, but usually, this is restricted to the brother of the father/mother ...
@Johannes_B: I sell you the name rights :D

@ChristianHupfer Become a member of the mafia, you can become the godfather

@Johannes_B: I am already member of the mafia :D I am a teacher :D

10:12 PM
@egreg, @DavidCarlisle (others as well) Any thoughts on tex.stackexchange.com/a/217985?

@Johannes_B... who is terribly procrastinating at the moment ... I should prepare the next stuff for our next Fortbildung on Tuesday ... I am the 'moderator/executive guy' :D
@DavidCarlisle: Upvoted your repeated comment... please don't delete it this time ;-)

@JosephWright It's not an answer to the question

@JosephWright your comment is accurate, and as @egreg says it's not an anwer

WOW! @DavidCarlisle agrees with me!
4

@egreg sorry, temporary aberration.

10:30 PM
@JosephWright I know this guy, @DavidCarlisle should know about him as well.

@Johannes_B Which guy?

@Johannes_B Ah

@JosephWright Disturbing the piece at texwelt.de, made a member go away. (developer of a bundle of classes and packages for latex2e)
@JosephWright Please no name, i guess you know who i mean ;-)

@Johannes_B Indeed, I think I can join the dots

@Johannes_B How come Herbert is much older on texwelt.de than here? ;-)

@egreg He's not telling the truth. :) There, of course. :)
Welcome to Rio 2016, where the overall cost is now 456% above the original value.
This is Brazil, gentlemen.

11:12 PM
@PauloCereda Did they come to Italy in order to learn how?

@egreg Probably. :)

@PauloCereda don't worry, you've still got enough for the Olympics?

@DavidCarlisle Apparently not enough. :)

@PauloCereda perhaps you should bid for the winter olympics as well, or the cricket world cup.

@DavidCarlisle The latter of course. :)
