Can anybody tell me how I should be trying to do this? I feel guilty as I've been given a bonus for half an answer... and not only can I not do the other half, but the other half makes me think I'm doing the first half all wrong as well. There must be a better way to test if a particular value is in the editor field of any bib entry and respond accordingly...

@tohecz wasting your time. But many times the downvotes are to let their own answers higher than yours.

1:58 AM
@percusse I dunno. I'll see. This time I try to face it without any anger. It's an attempt, either it works or not :)
btw, getting my gear on Friday, and I'm as restless as a child on the 23rd Dec :D

@tohecz Yay! :)
Don't overplay. Safety first :P

@percusse ... and now, dear neighbours, do not ever try to annoy me, or I'll beat (literally, in 16th's) the s*** out of you :D
@percusse don't worry :)
just, I'm disappointed to see that a synth worth €1200 gets a shitty keyboard, and it will be the reason why I won't buy it probably.

@tohecz I was in Köln and that is some badass organ in the cathedral
For a while nothing can impress me :P

@percusse I can imagine :p however, having access to your own organ makes it worth it too

nice 32' principal :)
well, gotta go. Night, @percusse :)

@tohecz Good night!

@Johannes_B I've suggested an answer
@Johannes_B Indeed

@JosephWright Good answer.
@JosephWright Any suggestions on how the retagging should occur?

@Johannes_B Normally someone just takes a few at a time and retags, trying not to 'flood' the front page

@JosephWright so just like @tohez did a few weeks back. I'll do about 10 every morning. In the morning, there isn't much activity.

@Johannes_B Yes
@Johannes_B First, though, we need to be sure that the plan has wider support

@JosephWright Of course

@tohecz LOL

@PauloCereda I love the last sentence the most :D

To: nadella@microsoft.com
From: Tom

Dear sir, please fix Microsoft Word to comply with the PDF spec.
@tohecz My favourite as well. :)

@PauloCereda You could e-mail Leslie!

@JosephWright oh what an idea! :D

@JosephWright Too easy. :)

9:45 AM
@PauloCereda but too funny :)

@PauloCereda Well oddly enough he uses LaTeX anyway (MiKTeX, it seems), so that might not help!

@JosephWright ooh!
Yay @egreg is back home!
@SeanAllred: bought me a Minecraft gift card, so I can finally play. :)

@PauloCereda Too late: I'm at work. ;-)

@egreg oh no! :) Was there wine midway? :P

@egreg I'm not :p but I should go, too

9:51 AM
@PauloCereda Not in the morning, at least for me. :)

@egreg :)

It is absolutely astonishing. In our universitys cafeteria we have coffee machine. It gives you coffee when you place your uni id card on this little thing that sucks the money off the card. If the card is placed there longer than five seconds, it starts to beep repeatedly so people don't forget their ID. That beeper was installed a while back, because people forgot their id. The god duck thing is beeping the whole day.

@Johannes_B ROTFLMAO

@tohecz If they would just remove the little edge, so that people cannot place the card there without falling down and they have to keep it in their hands. Problem solved. But no.....

@Johannes_B LOL

10:05 AM
@Johannes_B if every time it beeped it took a euro off your card, you wouldn't leave it there so often.

Same with this freaking dirty dishes. The people, no matter if student or 70 year old professor, cannot manage to stack plates properly. That thing looks like a war zone.
@DavidCarlisle I might not be the most intelligent person in the world, but i can manage to get myself a cup of coffee without annoying other people.
There are other methods i can use.

@Johannes_B no, people are asleep until drunk coffee, so no social responsibility until after. Of course you should go to a proper university with servants bringing you coffee in silver jugs and taking away the dishes, none of this automatic machine nonsense.

@DavidCarlisle I like the way you think. Is NAG in charge of these machines? :)

10:33 AM
@PauloCereda They have servants in white gloves.

@egreg aah! :)

@PauloCereda But jugs are just pottery, so as not to confuse them with a proper university.

@egreg :)

well, we'd got two of these large lavazza machines that take capsules. I'm happy with that, but some people weren't, so we got rid of one of these two machines, and we have a small nespresso one that is always broken.

10:55 AM
@tohecz Why should people prefer an American coffee machine when an Italian one is available?

and why do you ask me?

@egreg I had an yogurt ice cream! :)

3 hours later…
1:43 PM
I used all my engineering powers, wrote on a piece of paper how to use the coffeemachine and applied it.
It could have been better tough, i wrote »Choose product« but i actually never gave instructions to push the button as well.

@Johannes_B that mistake will repay you badly :D

@tohez Oh duck, i forgot to write down to place a mug first.

@Johannes_B trash it then and pirnt a new one

@tohecz handwritten. :-p

@Johannes_B ah, arrows or other inserts FTW then :D

1:52 PM
@tohecz I thought of making an experiment. Counting the percentage of fails for a few days, aplly the instructions and count the % of fails again.
@tohecz I also thought oof negative reinforcement poking all fail users with a stick or give them mild electro shocks.

lol
you are obsessed with the machine obviously :p

@tohecz Chinese water torture could not be worse.

2:17 PM
@Johannes_B: Just 80 more and I am rep - capped today :D Thanks

@ChristianHupfer I have no rep earned today, and i'm ok with it :-p

@Johannes_B: I am ok too... it was just a statement

@DavidCarlisle: ^^

@Johannes_B Yes I'd seen that one

I would reject that any minute given the fact that the post by doncherry is from 2011
@JosephWright What would you have done?

@Johannes_B 'Too minor' I think, but as it's now happened I'm not keen on rolling back

@Johannes_B, @JosephWright: As long there is a 'guideline' that a 'Thank you' is not necessary and should be removed, such edits are possible, although I graciously ignore such 'Thanks'

@Johannes_B If it was a new question and there were other things to edit it would probably be changed, so as it's now been bumped up the list anyway there is not much to do

2:39 PM
@JosephWright Rolling back would be even worse :-)

@ChristianHupfer Yes, but in general we've gone for 'fine to remove but really should be part of a wider edit'
@ChristianHupfer For an old question I don't see the gain here
@Johannes_B I think so: what's the point?

@tohecz Someone removed the instructions.

2:56 PM
@tohecz I found this today :)
So you say it is wrong to have a function that accepts both a string and a list of strings? — tohecz Mar 2 at 16:41
It's my finish dem decorators day. Lots of typechecking.
Now I get all these terrible jokes

@percusse you see why the UK has 3 pin plugs? Much safer

@DavidCarlisle LOL
Wait a minute, how can I use the two mouse buttons in Minecraft if my Mac mouse has only one button?!!?!?!!

@PauloCereda Well you can 'right click', but if you need both buttons at once you'll need a real two-button mouse

@DavidCarlisle Haha I'm too lazy to search for 3-hole animals :)

@JosephWright o.O
@percusse don't do it sir! :)
Or at least Google image them. :)

3:07 PM
@PauloCereda On another note, numpy arrays are almost as annoying as matlab's syntax :)
I blame the TCS people.

@percusse I blame imperative programming. :)
In Lisp, you only have lists and the other thing which is not a list. :)

@PauloCereda I actually blame Mathematica-wannabees
square brackets are horrible to parse and maintain the number of elements in a matrix

@percusse I'm opening a ticket in arara to add a BLAS subsystem in the next version.

they clearly don't use these day to day basis or they use emacs-y stuff that does it for them. Something that I can't ask my engineering dudes to use.
@PauloCereda arara {parallelize code, caramelize CPU}

A squid eating dough in a polyethylene bag is fast and bulbous. Got me?

3:14 PM
@percusse ooooh!
@Johannes_B The duck?!

@paulo Just listening to some Captain Beefheart

@Johannes_B Ah. :) Who?

Trout Mask Replica is the third album by Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band, released in June 1969. Produced by Beefheart's friend and former schoolmate Frank Zappa, it was originally released as a double album on Zappa's Straight Records label. Combining elements of blues, avant-garde, free jazz and other genres of American music, the album is regarded as an important work of experimental music and a major influence on genres such as alternative rock, progressive rock, math rock and post-punk. Most of Trout Mask Replica was recorded in March 1969 at Whitney Studios in Los Angeles, California...

@percusse so? :)
btw, just got a 100 bounty on MSE, yay! :)

3:35 PM
@PauloCereda :O I'm thinking about starting a server on my home PC.

@SeanAllred oooh! Keep me updated. I'm a newbie. :) We could also have David. :)
Hi @wipet! Out of curiosity, do you use Linux? :)

@PauloCereda Of course, I never use MS Win. I am using Linux since 1996 (SUN OS before).

@wipet Yay! Thought so. :)

Someone on an edit spree ... :D

@ChristianHupfer lockstep? :) He's a legend.

3:42 PM
@PauloCereda everyone knows that proper sunview mice have three buttons.

@PauloCereda That'd be so awesome!

@DavidCarlisle The singing mice from Bagpuss? :)
mouseses. :)

@SeanAllred :)

@ChristianHupfer Lots of new tags

3:43 PM
@PauloCereda: No, not lockstep

wtf, 8 waiting in the suggested edit queue?

@Johannes_B Yeah
Some less relevant than others, though

@SeanAllred All gone by now.

Like, I get that this is a linguistics application, but I'm not sure how related to linguistics it is. :P

@ChristianHupfer You! :)

3:45 PM
The linguistics guy

I rejected three or four of them, before they were gone

When you're the only player without a three-button mouse:

@ChristianHupfer How can i leave him a note?

@Johannes_B: I don't know... I suggested some further feedback some while in a Meta question, but it was not incorporated ;-)

@SeanAllred ooooooh!

3:49 PM
@Johannes_B: A mod can do, however, modpinging them a message

12 in the queue. Stop this guy.

@Johannes_B I would just keep rejecting the ones that don't make sense
He'll get the message

Who thinks the [linguistics] madness has to stop?

@Johannes_B reject them then they do no harm

3:55 PM
@DavidCarlisle I rejected 5 or 6 of them by now.

@Johannes: my crowning review achievement: tex.stackexchange.com/revisions/153389/3

@Johannes_B: I left a note via the other reason comment line... but I am not sure whether it works

@PauloCereda I like this edit.

@PauloCereda Pity. I know a lot of questions that could be tagged

@SeanAllred ooh it would be awesome to have a couple of them. :)

Q: The Help Vampire problem

Barry KellyWhat is Stack Overflow's long-term solution for the Help Vampire problem? Quote from article follows: Identifying Help Vampires can be tricky, because they look like any ordinary person (or Internet user, whichever is lesser). But by closely observing an individual's behavior using this hand...

@ChristianHupfer FYI (if you don't already know) [tag:question-ruined-by-users-on-edit-spree]

Did we just get a new field to choose from?

@SeanAllred: Thanks, I scarcely use that markup :D

3:59 PM
@ChristianHupfer I learned it a long time ago and then forget -- it's hard to find a reference for these things :)

@Johannes_B: Oh my, about 10 suggested edits caused by that guy

@Johannes_B I rejected a few and rolled back a few that were on the top page vvvv
@jason-zentz please don't tag questions just because of the subject matter of the text, otherwise we will need hundreds of new tags. The question is about tree alignment in TeX, the meaning of the tree is not relevant. — David Carlisle 1 min ago

(I am ashamed to have approved some of those before I realized what was going on :()

@SeanAllred: Naughty Sean, naugthy, naughty....

4:05 PM
Some I think were legitimately helpful though -- things that would only really make sense in a linguistics application
Most of them ... not so much

@DavidCarlisle: Does that comment really show up in the inbox of that guy?

In other news, tea is the most wonderful thing
a la modping?

@ChristianHupfer yes if someone has edited a question you can @ ping them, although for some bizarre reason typing just @ does not include their name in the completion options. So I was told by a friendly local moderator (or at least @JosephWright:-)

@DavidCarlisle: Thanks, I thought only if someone has left a comment there he could be pinged (or provided an answer)

@ChristianHupfer I guess that's what whoever implemented the @-completion interface thought as well:-)

4:11 PM
@DavidCarlisle: I assume, the whole backend is programmed in Fortran, so it's some implicit variable making this @-stuff possible :-P

@DavidCarlisle I starred your comment below/after the rollback.

Well, I have to go... I leave it to you to approve/edit/reject those stuff by Jason

4:22 PM
@JasonZentz Please don't tag every question on the site which involves linguistics but where the question focus is really on something else. For example, most of the 'tree' questions have good tags for trees and/or the relevant packages, which cover the requirement well.

I think we should make the editing and tagging priviledge set at 200K again. So we only get plain TeX, L3 and emacs questions :)
Because the rest would be deleted as not relevant

@percusse LOL

@percusse you forgot about TikZ for @David.

@tohecz rather pgfpict2e. People don't like it that much but it exists

@percusse I assume the second sentence refers to tikz?

4:29 PM
@percusse LOL

@DavidCarlisle Not really. fancychap, koma etc. You know boring stuff :P

@percusse you forgot classicthesis

@tohecz That should be named as classicthesismistakes

I did a few of those mistakes in my master thesis

(I starred that just to make clear that I wasn't the one to start it first)

@PauloCereda all these starred comments seem to have pushed my 33 star comment off the page, any news?

4:35 PM
@DavidCarlisle well, we have to keep this trend.

Make a guess where this syntax comes from A.den{1}(1) = 3

How do I tell pdflatex what I want the output filename to be. Is that -jobname?

Thanks.

TexWelt 78 of 1234 questions unanswered.

4:42 PM
@Johannes_B Ah, those were the days here
@Johannes_B Are they answerable? We have the twin problems of good questions without answers and not really wanting to pull the trigger on ones which are tricky to see an answer being possible

@JosephWright Doing my first janitory tour on TeXwelt. Problem is, every comment takes the Q up the front page. I don't like that.

@Johannes_B Eeek

@JosephWright It is ok for the low traffic we have. Everybody follows every question anyways. but right now, i don't think this is the right way.

How many of you use makefiles to manage compilation? There are some types of documents for which I can imagine that being useful, but I don't have much experience with it.

@Gregory Not really here: either I do things by hand (the majority) or use @PauloCereda's arara tool (more rarely)

4:49 PM
Or is there something other than make that's designed specifically for TeX and LaTeX?
I've been meaning to check out arara, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

@Gregory latexmk or rubber for 'automagic' building, arara for more 'I want you to do this' approach
@Gregory For me, it's almost always just 'run pdfLaTeX' which doesn't need a lot of automation!

@Gregory I left emacs to tell you to use arara :)
I highly recommend it

@SeanAllred I'll definitely check it out.

It's very easy to set up with the common editors (there are instructions in the manual; texdoc arara from the command line)

4:53 PM
@Johannes_B Good plan

@SeanAllred I just discovered that I already have arara installed; must've come with MacTeX.

What's more, there are now going to be (or are? @PauloCereda, has this been merged yet?) facilities in place to compile as long as it needs to to get everything sorted out (no more running latex multiple times! Well, as far as you know)

@Johannes_B Over my Christmas holiday I'll almost certainly do a sweep over the unanswered we have

@Gregory MacTeX is based on TeXLive, which includes just about everything by default :)

@SeanAllred In the development version
@SeanAllred Did you see the video of Paulo's talk?

4:54 PM
For the record, I believe you'll find rubber et al. there too
@JosephWright No, I did not -- was this at the TUG conference?

I couldn't make it up there this year :( My family literally left for Arizona without telling me
I feel so loved

@SeanAllred UK-TUG meeting (Paulo talked via Skype)

@Gregory Personally, i use latexmk. But you can use latexmk with arara as well ;-)

@JosephWright Starring to watch later tonight :) I don't have audio where I am

4:56 PM
@SeanAllred (the truth is, I went to the UK via TARDIS and came back before I even left. Wait, what)

@Johannes_B @Gregory Yep. Arara is a very robust tool due to the way it's designed -- you can set it up to go just about anything, I suppose

@PauloCereda Where is that (lua)latexmk arara pic you once posted?

@SeanAllred Thanks for the kind words. v3 is not that robust (a couple of annoying bugs), but v4 is quite in shape. Nicola's new book features arara a lot. :)
@Johannes_B I dunno. :) I need to find it.

5:12 PM
see when @egreg's away it's left to me to answer all the hard questions: tex.stackexchange.com/a/216200/1090 and tex.stackexchange.com/a/216030/1090

@DavidCarlisle The only ones you're able to answer.

@egreg well of course I also have to fix your answers: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/216134/…

Leaving for the bus and my glass of wine on the train. @PauloCereda Remember the match at 19:45 UTC.
@DavidCarlisle Commented. ;-)

@percusse I've just got a downvote raised on music.SE, cool :)

@DavidCarlisle I am not able to answer such questions because I am not so quick :(

5:17 PM
@egreg Oh I'll watch! :) Thanks!

@wipet also they need deep knowledge of latex internals, I think probably a bit hard for a committed plain tex user like yourself:-)

@DavidCarlisle Well, it helps that a lot of those internals are your fault ;-)

@JosephWright ooh that was rude. :)

@JosephWright I'm not sure I'm to blame for ps2pdf requiring to be told which file to convert

@DavidCarlisle but we are sure :p

5:21 PM
@PauloCereda @DavidCarlisle knows that a lot of the internals of LaTeX are Leslie's fault, anyway
@DavidCarlisle Probably have to let you off that one

@JosephWright We like to think it's mostly David's fault. :)

@DavidCarlisle Anyway, everything in expl3 seems to be my fault :-)

@JosephWright Exactly. :)

@JosephWright so is this one surely :D

@DavidCarlisle Anything before github.com/latex3/svn-mirror/commit/… I guess (that's my first commit)
@DavidCarlisle I guess I joined the team a bit before that, so perhaps things were more different (we had all that n/N/d/O/o/... discussion going on)

@JosephWright "An outsider's overview" :-)
@tohecz you should use the macros from xii, you'd get a more rectangular code block.

5:31 PM
@DavidCarlisle Something like github.com/latex3/svn-mirror/commit/… would be around when I joined

@DavidCarlisle 'tis not TeX

@tohecz get out of here:-)

@DavidCarlisle I gave that as a talk at UK-TUG. I'd written it having played with expl3 and knocked together keys3 (~ l3keys) after Will asked for my opinion on the code
@DavidCarlisle I see I get mentioned in December 2008 in the team list:
Joseph Wright has been dropping hints that we should write about the
progress that's being made with the expl3 code.

@JosephWright beware browsing mail archives, you can feel you are in a time loop after a while
2

@DavidCarlisle Perhaps
@DavidCarlisle I notice you decided to let both Will and me join within the space of 6 months: risky!
@DavidCarlisle As you say, some things stay the same (xor for a start!)

6:24 PM
@DavidCarlisle: ^^ :)

@egreg I see you're answering tabulary questions as I drive home

@DavidCarlisle I didn't even have time to ping you

@AndrewCashner tricky to answer pings while driving, anyway:-)

@DavidCarlisle I wouldn't want to be responsible for damages from TeXing while driving!

@DavidCarlisle Are you looking at TeX.SX while driving? At least I'm not driving the train, so answering is safer for me. Well, I was drinking my glass of wine, while preparing the answer, so…

6:34 PM
@egreg no, I'm not:-)
@egreg we should have changed phantom and friends to be latex box commands with \leavevmode,

@DavidCarlisle Too late, they were in LaTeX2.09. But they're not documented in the manual, so people use them at their own risk.

@egreg yes too late now but we could perhaps have changed them in 2e.

@DavidCarlisle With different names, yes.

7:13 PM
@egreg @David Do you not recommend using the phantom commands then?

Ah Hello @Andrew!

Hi @tohecz! I was at a conference in Spain last week and am back working on my tables now.

@AndrewCashner cool. Well, I'll finally get to my piano (and I'll get my new gear as well) on Friday :)

@tohecz What's the new gear?

@AndrewCashner I'll finally get proper stereo :) 2x100W piano combos

7:19 PM
@tohecz Cool

@AndrewCashner yep, really looking forward to that. But before, I need to move to Prague ;)

@AndrewCashner well as @egreg said, they are like \hbox so can be used in latex but only with care, but I wouldn't use them for setting a paragraph indent in anycase.

@DavidCarlisle How about just for a one-line indent inside tabular? And what would be better?

@AndrewCashner well every paragrah has a \parindent indentent already, it's just 0pt there, so setting that to something else seems more natural than making a box with empty content that's as wide as another box

@DavidCarlisle Is every column block in a tabular by default a paragraph?

7:31 PM
@AndrewCashner p columns are parboxes l c and r are mbox (more or less)
@AndrewCashner anywhere where tex is breaking lines automatically is a paragraph internally

@DavidCarlisle Thanks. My most common use for \hphantom is a poetry line that needs to be indented by the width of a preceding line (e.g., it completes the second half of a metrically incomplete line).
@DavidCarlisle Probably inadvisedly I am using tabular environments to set Spanish poems in parallel with their translation. None of the multicolumn packages worked for me, and eledmac was more than I needed.

@AndrewCashner ah that's different (and more reasonable) your MWE made it look more like a parindent (one of the problems with minimal examples:-)
@AndrewCashner as in \def\foo#1#2{#1\\\hphantom{#1}#2} \foo{line one}{carries on} ?

@egreg: I'm ready. :)

@DavidCarlisle \begin{tabular}{l} four syllables,\\ full line with all eight syllables,\\ \hphantom{four syllables,} the other four. \end{tabular}
@DavidCarlisle You've probably seen this in Shakespeare editions, like where one character has the first half of the blank verse and the next character finishes it.
