Can anybody tell me how I should be trying to do this? I feel guilty as I've been given a bonus for half an answer... and not only can I not do the other half, but the other half makes me think I'm doing the first half all wrong as well. There must be a better way to test if a particular value is in the editor field of any bib entry and respond accordingly...

It is absolutely astonishing. In our universitys cafeteria we have coffee machine. It gives you coffee when you place your uni id card on this little thing that sucks the money off the card. If the card is placed there longer than five seconds, it starts to beep repeatedly so people don't forget their ID. That beeper was installed a while back, because people forgot their id. The god duck thing is beeping the whole day.

I used all my engineering powers, wrote on a piece of paper how to use the coffeemachine and applied it.

It could have been better tough, i wrote »Choose product« but i actually never gave instructions to push the button as well.

@AndrewCashner well as @egreg said, they are like \hbox so can be used in latex but only with care, but I wouldn't use them for setting a paragraph indent in anycase.

@AndrewCashner well every paragrah has a \parindent indentent already, it's just 0pt there, so setting that to something else seems more natural than making a box with empty content that's as wide as another box

@DavidCarlisle Thanks. My most common use for \hphantom is a poetry line that needs to be indented by the width of a preceding line (e.g., it completes the second half of a metrically incomplete line).

@DavidCarlisle Probably inadvisedly I am using tabular environments to set Spanish poems in parallel with their translation. None of the multicolumn packages worked for me, and eledmac was more than I needed.
