I'm getting to the point where I stumble upon old questions, answers, and comments that I've made scattered throughout the site. My consistent reaction:

@SeanAllred I know the feeling, i guess we all do.

tex.stackexchange.com/q/207040/37907 Just got a private message over at LaTeX community with the exact same content.

@MomoTh It is generally not helpful to just say 'I got an error' -- which error did you get? You should of course copy \usepackage{tikz} \usetikzlibrary{arrows,shapes.geometric,calc}\tikzset{my cylinder/.style={cylinder, cylinder uses custom fill,rotate=-30,outer sep=0pt}} to the preamble of you document, if you haven't done so already, and place only the tikzpicture in the body of the document.

It's a very nice learning process: now that I wrote my own macro expander, I'm really inclined to read TeX: the program and learn more on what Knuth was doing. :)

@Johannes_B yes it's posted above, note some people seem less impressed: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/18152532#18152532

Hey guys, I have this PDF with a very ugly cover (it's a yellow background). Any hints on an easy trick to remove this ugly background on the first page?

@PauloCereda remove the whole page with pdftools and typeset a new one?

@DavidCarlisle I wouldn't like to resort to that. :)

@PauloCereda it depends on how the background is done. Very likely it's one triplet o quadruplet of 1-byte numbers somewhere in the file, that just needs to be changed to 255,255,255,255. But there's some idiom about a needle and a pile of ...

@PauloCereda given that each page is a separate object in the pdf stream, removing/adding a page is a lot less invasive than changing the content of a page
@tohecz yes but the stream is probably compressed, and you can't change the byte counts in the file

@DavidCarlisle he could be lucky ;)

11:02 AM
@tohecz :)
@DavidCarlisle You are right, I might redo the page. :)

@PauloCereda that's starting to get worrying:-)

@DavidCarlisle LOL

Oh my, I sense GitHub activity from @egreg! /gasp

@PauloCereda Issue report

@egreg Nah, you forked the repo. :)

@PauloCereda Against my will.

@egreg Thought so. :)

@PauloCereda he was probably looking for the ask a question button

@PauloCereda The problem now is how to get rid of it

1:44 PM
@DavidCarlisle :)
@egreg Oopsie.

@PauloCereda stupid markup

@PauloCereda Found and gone. :)

@DavidCarlisle You were close, but tags admit no spaces. :)
@egreg Ah. :)

@PauloCereda markdown should be eliminated and everyone should use xml all the time

@DavidCarlisle Or my macro expander.

@PauloCereda markdown should be eliminated and everyone should use xml all the time

@DavidCarlisle o.O

@DavidCarlisle LOL
This dude certainly might have a Lisp trauma. :)

2:41 PM
Please, don't you know if there should be a space in \S9.3 ?

would the guilty own up:-)
it looks like three people actually looked into your head ;) — dcmst 2 mins ago
@tohecz google suggests yes but don't always believe what you read on the internet: typographyforlawyers.com/paragraph-and-section-marks.html

@DavidCarlisle well, the letters in the name of the website mix in my head and make typographyawful, don't you know why? :D

@tohecz Thanks for making me feel dyslexic. :)

@PauloCereda well, I do feel dyslexic cause of that :D

@tohecz :D

2:52 PM
But still, laywers aren't really who I would take as a source. Moreover, the document doesn't discuss interword vs thin space...
Where is @egreg when we need him? :D

@tohecz Here I am

@tohecz I wonder if a lawyer can really stop infinite recursion.

@egreg Is it \S9.3, \S\,9.3 or \S~9.3, please?

@tohecz Leave away \S and you'll have no problem. ;-) Either no space or a thin space, I'd say.

@egreg well, I decided to introduce it when I found out that I need to cite sections of other articles rather than specific statements, and I started loving it :)

3:01 PM
Would any of you say this question is on-topic?
4
Q: How are countriesofeurope characters generated?

Karl LI'd like to extend the countriesofeurope package with some other not-euro countries. When I open the pfb file in fontforge and select a country I get this: How is that generated? What tool should I use to create a similar outline for a new country?

@SeanAllred No, doesn't look like it to me

@SeanAllred I guess they traced a map and then made up a font with fontforge. Nothing special.

@SeanAllred After the drone incident in a football game and all the tension raised between Albania and Serbia, I don't think it's safe for us to poke our fingers at this question. :)

@egreg Yeah, it's nothing special, but it's still off-topic--ish...
@PauloCereda O.O I had not heard about this... crazy

@SeanAllred It's very recent. Two days ago, I think.

3:11 PM
@SeanAllred Voted

@JosephWright I am far from being an expert in the field, but the basic concept must be ok. Can you have a look at it? latex-community.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=25237

@Johannes_B If I may, I think there's no place to hide in this case; one's hands must get dirty to make TeX and SQL queries work together. My best guess is for the OP to use some sort of templating engine that somehow offers database connectivity and generate the final document. Something along the lines of Cheetah, Velocity, Slim, StringTemplate, Rythmengine, etc.

@PauloCereda Thanks for replying. I just have to look up those words ;-)

3:26 PM
@Johannes_B Sorry for the lingo. :) But I believe it's the OP's best choice. It's what I do for a couple of projects of mine (namely, the songbook posted on meta is powered by a template engine + huge database).

@PauloCereda I have absolutely no experience in this field. Would the user (not the op) use the template engine? Or would the op use it to generate some kind of form?

@Johannes_B What worries me is the fact the OP has no programming skills. Using a template engine would require at least some basic understading of the templating language and hooks obtained from the database connectivity. Unless of course there is some sort of graphical tool that implements templating painlessly (does this word exist?). I'm probably a bad reference, since I write things when I need them. :)

@PauloCereda Doing this task without programming knowledge won't be a good start and lead to many errors and some grey hairs.

@Johannes_B Exactly. The OP's first phrase is actually a death sentence IMHO.

@PauloCereda If i got this right, the template engine combines the three steps of providing the form, interface to the database and generation of the final tex-file?

3:35 PM
Just as a quick example: an orb tag in the arara manual is a quick sample of how a template engine works. I had to devote a couple of chapters explaining how it works so people could use it.
@Johannes_B Actually, no. It just glues things together and apply some logic to determine the final result.
For example:
Paulo Cereda on March 15, 2012

Sometimes, you get stuck with repetitive tasks, like generating the very same document over and over with a few changes in the content. I’m the coordinator of a small choir in a parish, and twice a month I have to print songsheets for the community. I usually try to automate as many tasks as I can, but LaTeX output is quite tricky. Here’s my attempt to write a program that spits out a .tex file.

For my task, I decided to rely on a Java solution, but the idea applies to every programming language. I already have the songs organized in a database, so I only need to iterate through the records and generate a .tex file. But how? First, I need to define how my .tex file should look. …

@Johannes: sorry for tooting my own duck call.
Later on:
Paulo Cereda on October 13, 2012

Some time ago, I wrote a blog post about generating LaTeX code with a template engine. Yesterday, I finished an application for a client which had a lot of templates; since my hands were already dirty in the template clay, I decided to revisit the whole idea and come up with some sort of merging tool. And yes, there’s also a duck involved.

I was playing with some code and, all of a sudden, I actually came up with something interesting: what if we have a tool that merges a list of datasources into a template and generate the output? Of course, I was aiming at TeX and friends, but the tool could be used for other contexts as well. Everything was ready, but I needed a name. Then: …

@PauloCereda I am going to add a link to the post referencing your tips. In the meantime, i read up on the topic and the links you gave me. Seems to be interesting.

I could also sell the OP my awesome macro expander. :) (@David: I'll share the exploits)
@Johannes_B Glad to be of service. :)

@PauloCereda Thanks for your help. :-)

@Johannes_B My pleasure. :)

4:06 PM
@PauloCereda vvv
cpp <<HERE

HERE

@DavidCarlisle Mine has fancier syntax. :)

@JosephWright tex.stackexchange.com/a/207307/21930 Two things. Why \csname …\endcsname, the token does not contain any special characters… I've seen that at other point, is that because the same reason you need sometime \expandafter\show\csname … (“outer” may be?)
Second one: \begingroup\expandafter\expandafter\expandafter\endgroup That's a nice construnctioin :) What does it do?

@Manuel In plain \new... macros are all \outer

@PauloCereda (defining-kbd-macro ?

@DavidCarlisle Way better.
:P

4:09 PM
@PauloCereda as noted above, we like lisp..
3

@DavidCarlisle :)

@Manuel Avoids defining anything by accident: \csname ... \endsname defines as \relax if the name was not already in existence. We don't want that do happen globally if testing for a possibly undefined macro.
@Manuel 'Standard' piece of code (not expandable, so not used by e.g. \@ifundefined)

@Manuel It expands a conditional before ending a group; the first and third are used to make a token out of \csname...\endcsname, the second for expanding \ifx<made token>\relax; then when the group ends, the definition of <made token> will disappear.
@Manuel It's easier with \ifdefined or \ifcsname that don't define the token to be \relax in case it's undefined, like \csname...\endcsname does.

@JosephWright @egreg Understood :)

@Manuel it tests for pdfname without defining it while being safe if someone has already done a less opaque test. You could do \ifx\pdfoutput\@undefined but that fails if someone has gone \@ifundefined{pdfoutput} as that leaves it let to \relax

4:15 PM
@JosephWright Just testing whether \pdfoutput is defined doesn't guarantee the output is PDF. It's defined whenever pdftex is used, even with DVI output.

@egreg Oh yes: will amend

@JosephWright If it's defined and it's a primitive and its value is positive, then PDF mode.
Heiko would test for it being a primitive, you can assume it, I guess.

@egreg Indeed
@egreg I've added a test on the value

@percusse: sir save me! :)

4:49 PM
@ChristianHupfer I saw you linked to a site providing LaTeX templates. Please don't.

5:08 PM
Did everyone get the GitHub survey?

@JosephWright Nope. Which one?

> How are things going with GitHub?
@PauloCereda Perhaps I really did get picked out :-)

@JosephWright :)
@Joseph: They are probably not fiddling with the wacky ones.

5:46 PM
@egreg: would you like to translate the new messages of arara 4.0 to Italian? :) You are our official Italian translator. :)

1 hour later…
7:05 PM
@JosephWright ?

@DavidCarlisle I'm sensing a 'no' here

7:22 PM
@PauloCereda I'll do it.

@egreg Thank you very much. :) I'm softening some rough edges, then I'll send the file. :)

@DavidCarlisle I have to confess, the blockarray-package does not go out of my head. In these days I often thought: 'Ouh, there could be a solution with blockarray' - we very need an up to date version of that :()

8:14 PM
@PauloCereda Who is your official german translator? I guess the team member Clemens?

Ze wan änd aunli.

@Johannes_B It's Marco. :) But I think Marco is quite busy at the moment. So Clemens is officially in charge. Of course, we accept volunteers.

scnr.

@PauloCereda If you need help, just say the word ;-)

@Johannes_B ooh is it duck? :)

8:16 PM
@henry Either something on my side went wrong, or … Your message is a bit cryptic
@PauloCereda Jep, it's duck ;-)

@Johannes_B Really? That's weird, I thought I spoke English.

@PauloCereda Did you know, that you can use the word duck just like smurf?

@Johannes: Thank you very much. :) I need to finish a couple of things, then I'll poke the translators. :) If I'm not mistaken, we have less messages now than the original 3.0 series (but they are completely different).
@Johannes_B ooh!

@henry \selectlanguage{saxon} makes more sense ;-)

@Johannes_B lol hahaha. :)

8:19 PM
@Johannes_B: ???

@cis 1992 isn't so long ago, what do you want an updated version for?
5

@DavidCarlisle You are older than that? :)

@DavidCarlisle I wish you could have seen me breaking down laughing :-p

@PauloCereda english corrected, if you're going to poke holes at my grammar

@ChristianHupfer In a comment you posted a link to a site providing templates (few months ago). All of those are bad. Most templates are.

8:22 PM
@DavidCarlisle I had never thinked of correcting other's grammer, I usually are worse for such afairs.

@Johannes_B: Give me the link please... I have made 3357 comments (or something like that ;-))

@ChristianHupfer The Q is inactive for months. No need to take action.

@Johannes_B: If I made the comment some time around January/February: I was young and needed the money :-P

@ChristianHupfer Elternabend geschafft? :-)

@Johannes_B: Yep.... alle zufrieden... jetzt noch der Umzug nächste Woche ... dann bin ich geschafft ;-)
@Johannes_B: Now give me the link please, I am impatient and too lazy to search :D

8:25 PM
@ChristianHupfer To clarify, you are done/finished, or physically out of order?

@Johannes_B: Both ... and ;-)

@ChristianHupfer It was hours ago, i closed the tab. The Q has gone its way down the river :-p

@Johannes_B: Thou shalt bookmark all posts were I made a comment... Don't you know this rule??? ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Little hint: It was the document-classes tag.
At least, iirc

@Johannes_B: Well, that reduces the number of possible questions incredibly ;-)
@Johannes_B: Did I post an answer too or just a comment? I feel somehow demented ;-)

8:29 PM
@ChristianHupfer Please be patient and let me find it :-p

@Johannes_B: I found it...

@ChristianHupfer tex.stackexchange.com/questions/176873/what-documentclass-template-should-i-use-‌for-non-sectioned-essays the same?

@Johannes_B: Thanks, as I wrote, I found it
@Johannes_B: Well, I cannot claim I did not wrote that comment... I did not check the recommendation, actually

@ChristianHupfer I can't connext to the main site right now. Do you have the same problem?

@Johannes_B: No, I just initiated a close vote for that post :D

8:36 PM
LateX passes global options down to packages. Where is this documented?
To be honest, i am too lazy to search

@Johannes_B clsguide, the latex companion, source2e, I'd guess

@DavidCarlisle Thanks, but i'll check it in the morning.

@Johannes_B: Looking on my latex companion I would suggest that book ... effectively the last one not in moving boxes right now

@DavidCarlisle TLC? Who wrote that anyways?

@Johannes_B of course best documentation is to have latex.ltx in an emacs buffer at all time, then the answer is just there.

8:39 PM
We have to poke @Frank for a new version :-)

@Johannes_B don't know, the first edition was by a dog, but he got replaced by a compas at some point

@Johannes_B: Frank'n'Furter? ;-)

@DavidCarlisle Emacs aliases to vim on my machine :-p

@Johannes_B: One day, you will see the power of the Force ;-)

@Johannes_B that explains why you haven't passed 100k rep, hampered by poor tools
5

8:41 PM
@DavidCarlisle @ChristianHupfer I am the new one. I use `vim`
Do you have cookies?

@DavidCarlisle: There is a strong correlation between emacs and > 100k rep? Then I should pass it ... within the next two days, since I exclusively use emacs

@ChristianHupfer probably:-)

@Johannes_B: Ah, the WYSIWYGuy ;-)

Guys, since the battery of my laptop will die any minute: :wq

8:45 PM
@ChristianHupfer @Johannes_B tell him to use vim

@Johannes_B: Have a good time

@ChristianHupfer My little girl would say »dododo, WYSIWYG«
@ChristianHupfer Having her finger raised :-p

@Johannes_B: I don't want to know which finger ;-)

@ChristianHupfer She is two years old, so the innocent one ;-)

@DavidCarlisle: I would rather use Word than ... it

8:48 PM
Where is @PauloCereda when i need him?

@Johannes_B probably trying to get out of vim

@Johannes_B On a mission vimpossible? ;-)

The ctrl + something guys made their move, the sane guy goes home.
Good night night folks.
