@cfr I was betting that you were going to show up with a forest answer. :)

1:39 AM
Hello!

cfr
2:26 AM
@AdamLiter Well, if I didn't, somebody else would. And it is a relatively harmless form of procrastination as these things go...

2:46 AM
@cfr True. :) I was thinking about doing a forest answer myself.
Hello @kan!

kan
@AdamLiter Hi there!
Could someone please help me with what font is being used here? Garamond? math.uwo.ca/~gwang72/Gaohong_Homepage_files/CV.pdf

3:02 AM
@kan I don't personally know much about fonts, but you could check out this question: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/45919/…
There are some resources on the web that might help you.

kan
@AdamLiter Thanks! BTW, you have a really neat homepage!

cfr
@kan Fontin and Computer Modern Symbol. (According to the properties of the PDF.)

@kan Thanks! :) It was a fun way of procrastinating.

kan
@cfr Hah! Very helpful! Thanks!

@cfr On sort of a random note, you're a logician for your day job, right, I'm guessing?

kan
3:26 AM
Hm, so, should I use open type fonts or type 1 fonts?

@kan This could be helpful tex.stackexchange.com/questions/22549/…
Sorry I'm not of more help.

kan
@AdamLiter Hey, that is very helpful.

@kan Glad I could at least help a bit, then :)

kan
@AdamLiter Thank you! :-)

3:42 AM
@kan No problem.

3:58 AM
@Adam: hi Adam, I already have a new version of arara in the oven, maybe we could revisit a couple of attempts we did in the past. :)

test

@PauloCereda That sounds good to me! :) I've been periodically checking out the arara repo on GitHub, and I've been getting excited about the new version!
!!/eightball Will the new version of arara work with knitr!?

5 hours later…
9:13 AM
Hello
What exactly is arara and what does it accomplish ?

@IbnSaeed It's an automation tool
@IbnSaeed The idea is you can put a set of comments in your source to specify how to compile it, so effectively something like 'run LaTeX then BibTeX then MakeIndex then LaTeX twice' or whatever.

1 hour later…
10:25 AM
I read somewhere on this cite before that instead writing f:A \to B it is better to write f "something" A \to B, so what is that command instead : ? I can't remember

@Cortizol \colon I guess.
I'm still sleepy today, so I can't remember.

@PauloCereda Maybe. Thanks :)
@PauloCereda I find that question tex.stackexchange.com/questions/37789/…. So \colon is the key :)

@Cortizol awesome. :)

2 hours later…
12:11 PM
@AdamLiter When you have a free time, could you help me come up with a rule + test file? Little I know about knitr. :(

12:44 PM
Good maen ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Hello

@JosephWright: Was TeX.SX down for some minutes? I had problems to connect to it, whereas other websites where available without problems

@ChristianHupfer Not that I know of

@JosephWright: Well, strange then.. it works again, so further worries ;-)

Q: Formula in LaTeX please

user64087How I can creat this style with LaTeX?

12:50 PM
Although reopened it has not improved at all ;-)

@ChristianHupfer No
@ChristianHupfer Reopened as it was closed way too fast

@JosephWright: Thanks -- it is an explanation for the connection failure
@JosephWright: I voted to leave open and reopen, but I fear there will be not much effort from the OP ... The apa-style tag is slightly misleading, in my point of view ;-)

@ChristianHupfer If there is no effort it will get swept up later on

@JosephWright: I think so, yes. I have the impression today is made for close-voters ;-)

1 hour later…
2:00 PM
Everyone having a fun day?

@JosephWright I wish. :)

@PauloCereda Problems?

@JosephWright Quite a few. :) Hopefully at the end of the day I won't be sober enough to even account them. :P

Good maen again...
@PauloCereda: 'allo! :-P

2:16 PM
@ChristianHupfer 'lo!

@PauloCereda: I activated my old Win XP :D I am just writing from Windows ... incredible :D

@ChristianHupfer Lorde Lord have mercy.

@PauloCereda: Yes, what a decline :D

@ChristianHupfer At least you don't have the blue theme setup, right? :)

@PauloCereda.. uhm... I did not configure the theme :D
@PauloCereda: Are you shocked now :D

2:35 PM
@ChristianHupfer No words. Why, oh why! :)

@PauloCereda: Look at the right side, the installation of the game :D

@ChristianHupfer I am more worried to the fact that you pasted your screenshot in Paint.

@PauloCereda: No, LibreOffice :D I have no other graphics stuff on my XP

@ChristianHupfer That's far worse then. :)

@PauloCereda: Paint? I did not use paint for 19 years now ... incredible
@PauloCereda: If you nudge around, I will send Max Payne to you... Max Payne 4 in Brazil ;-)
@PauloCereda: The game is on 4 DVDs and installs incredibly long.

2:52 PM
@ChristianHupfer Ah I played it. :)
Max Payne 3, can't remember of 4.
woohooo hi @MartinScharrer! Long time no see, buddy!

@PauloCereda: Max Payne 4 is especially for you ;-)

@PauloCereda Hi, how are you doing?

@MartinScharrer In a hurry nowdays, but fine (I'm now a PhD candidate). :) And you?
^^ fuuuu I got that wrong, fixed in time. :)

3:11 PM
@PauloCereda Congratulation! In which field exactly?

@MartinScharrer Computer engineering. :) Yet another engineer, we are doomed. :)
More precise, it's theory of computation + adaptive technology. :)

3:40 PM
Hello @MartinScharrer

Q: Why does my solution belong in the question rather than the answer?

Peter TaylorAs an active member of one of the more unusual stacks, I am well aware that each stack has its own community and to an extent its own norms. However, when it comes to the network-wide guidance on answering one's own question: Can I answer my own question? Yes! Stack Exchange has always e...

I'd appreciate the views of others here: to me the 'answer' to the question of concern looked more like a comment/edit, but I may be wrong.

4:41 PM
@PauloCereda Sure! Do you have a time frame in mind? I'm pretty swamped this week, but I could definitely help with it next week, though.
Also, I imagine the MWE in my question would be a fine test file, but I'll also think about it and see if there is something that would cover more use cases.

4:57 PM
@AdamLiter You can always contact me by email, if that helps. :)
@AdamLiter I might also need some basics on installing knitr as well. :)

5:45 PM
I'm trying to format a quotation in an article with \begin{quotation} quote \end{quotation}, but the text isn't showing up in the compiled document and I'm not getting any errors or warnings from xelatex during the compilation. Any ideas?

@Gregory I think we'd need more of a clue as to what's happening. as always helps to make an example, take a copy of the document and delete stuff until its small enough to post. \endinput before the quotation would have that effect for example

That makes sense. I should know enough to post a minimal working example.
@DavidCarlisle: I figured out the problem. It was a stupid human trick that I don't even want to admit.

@Gregory well I guessed as much:-)

@PauloCereda How was yesterday in SP?

6:02 PM
SHOCK News procrastination is apparently a bad thing, how will the TeX community cope? bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-29570615

Oh my, that is funny.

@DavidCarlisle Let's just procrastinate the war on procrastination.

@egreg It was very good, although there was a heavy traffic (and a lot of people in the station, so I lost two buses, got home 2:30h this morning). But I suspect I got food poisoning, I should've had stuck with things I knew. :(

7:08 PM
@PauloCereda I went for a tour of inner Istria. Very nice country, both the coast and the inner part.

@PauloCereda Sure, I can contact you by email. Installing knitr is pretty easy if you have R installed on your computer.
Basically, just install.packages('knitr', dependencies = TRUE)

@PauloCereda A village I passed bears the notable name of Brščak.

@egreg How nice! :)
@AdamLiter hmmm.

7:23 PM
@PauloCereda R can be installed by downloading the binary here: cran.us.r-project.org
Then, from the command line typing R will start an R session.
Where you can then type install.packages('knitr', dependencies = TRUE)
RStudio is a nice IDE for R, if you're into that.

@AdamLiter Thanks, I'll try later on. Right now I'm not feeling fine (a little dizzy). I'll try on my development laptop.

7:53 PM
@PauloCereda :/ Hope you feel better!

8:25 PM
@AdamLiter Thanks, I will. :)

8:42 PM
Is it possible to use TeX Gyre math fonts without XeLaTeX?

@Szabolcs No
@Szabolcs Well, you can also use LuaTeX but it's the same story: you need to use a Unicode engine

@JosephWright Thanks for the clarification!

cfr
@AdamLiter Sorry, no. However, I do have a strong background and interest in logic, and I do teach logic. (Well, not right now. But generally.)

@cfr Q: Why did the Prolog chicken cross the road? A: No. :)

9:02 PM
@cfr I was just curious. Are you in a philosophy department, then? Or math? Or something else?

the site's gone

@DavidCarlisle Does it work now? I saw a lag in loading for a few minutes, but it's working fine for me now.
We are making a network configuration change to the database backend - there may be a minor blip in services.
Network change complete.

@AdamLiter oh it is, their sense of time is poor, I got the offline for maintenance, back in under an hour page, back in 1 minute it apparently meant

@DavidCarlisle Haha, one minute is technically 'under an hour'. :)

@AdamLiter true but...

9:16 PM
@DavidCarlisle Hah yeah, it could have been more informative.

9:49 PM
Is this the usual and proper way to write what this command produces? \left. \frac{dV}{dr}\right|_{r=r_0} Or is there a better solution?

@Szabolcs \bigg|_{r=r_0} with no \left and \right

Thanks!

@DavidCarlisle: LuaTeX expert. :)

@PauloCereda but I'm in shock about python
@PauloCereda looking for a suitable editor/IDE to teach Python for small people hit stack exchange, but see top voted answer here:(
1033
Q: What IDE to use for Python?

husaytAsking as a Python beginner, what IDEs ("GUIs/editors") do others use for Python coding? If you can just give the name (for example, Textpad, Eclipse ..) that will be enough. If it is already mentioned, you can just vote for it. But if you can also give some more comparative information, that w...

@PauloCereda at least I answer questions unlike some other people who've just been asking luatex questions lately

10:09 PM
@DavidCarlisle Going to talk about it at the UK-TUG meeting?

Hello, everybody!

@tohecz Hello

@JosephWright I start collecting tips for must-sees in London that aren't in guides :)

cfr
@AdamLiter Philosophy ;). But my first degree is in maths and philosophy.

@JosephWright luatex or using vim for python?

10:16 PM
@DavidCarlisle Up to you ;-)

@cfr Cool! :) What are your areas of specialization then, if not logic?

@JosephWright when is it?
@tohecz when will you be in UK?

@DavidCarlisle Nov 14-18

@DavidCarlisle 29th Nov

@tohecz damn I was going to get you to cover for me at uktug

10:18 PM
@DavidCarlisle a failed plan ;)

What do you guys use to type equations? Just a plain text editor, or something a bit more efficient? Today I must type a very large number of equations, and it's extremely slow and tedious. I very much wish I had just done the whole thing on paper and scanned it ... if only I had a more readable handwriting.
I also wonder if there's anything to convert handwriting to LaTeX on Windows. Windows 7 had built-in math-handwriting recognition and I think it produces MathML. Not that I would use it: at the moment I have neither a Windows machine nor a touchscreen or other handwriting friendly device.

@Szabolcs I use emacs Paulo uses vim other people use other things...
@Szabolcs depends what you are used to, but really with reasonable command completion etc typing an equation shouldn't be a lot more effort than typing plain text

Still a lot more effort than writing with a pencil.
Maybe I just need to find the right tools.

@Szabolcs not for me (I can't read my hand writing if I leave it a day or two:-)
@Szabolcs mac or linux?

Mac.
I keep switching between TeXShop for easy compilation and Vim for easier typing with its LaTeXSuite package.

10:32 PM
@Szabolcs personally I believe there's no hope for vim users, no wonder you struggle:-) I know esq : q and that's all I've ever needed:-)

cfr
@AdamLiter Moral psychology, ethics and job hunting ;).

Hi, I have a couple of questions on standard useage for latex
1.) should one use $...$ or ( ... ) for inline math?
2.) likewise, should one use $$....$$ or [....] for displaying equations?
3.) generally, what should be used for text in equations such as units? \mbox or \text?

@Jun-GooKwak \(...\) is preferable, but old timers use $...$. Never use $$...$$. For units, look at siunitx and its \SI command.

@egreg Thank you for your response. Why is $$...$$ not acceptable?

why is \( better than $?

10:37 PM

Q: Are \( and \) preferable to dollar signs for math mode?

Mark MeckesAlong the lines of Why is \[ ... \] preferable to $$?, what reasons are there (if any) to favor \( ... \) over $ ... $?

219
Q: Why is \[ ... \] preferable to $$ ... $$?

Ben AlpertI've heard that you should use \[ ... \] for displayed equations instead of $$ ... $$, but why is that? I'd assumed that it's so that you can more easily tell which are starting and which are ending delimiters, but if I always use a syntax-highlighting text editor, I can see that easily based o...

Thank you egreg. :)
and so I should just use the siunitx package when inputting units next to numbers in equations?
Last question! 4.) Say you have an equation and want to show the steps in solving it. Should you use [...] for each step or just use \begin{equation} ... \end{equation}, and align it?
[..]*
ah... [ ... ]**

@Jun-GooKwak not sure what you mean by []* ?

[
hm... it automatically takes out the slash, its the displaying the equation on a new line

Couldn't bring myself to like \( ...
@Jun-GooKwak Surround any code you type here with backticks (`)

@Jun-GooKwak you can use \[ \] backtick for one line code fragments here

10:42 PM
@Szabolcs Thank you. So should one use ' [ ... ] ' for each step of solving a problem, or would it be easier to just type it all in \begin[equatiion}... \end{equation}

@Szabolcs you might once you have \( x+ \mbox{ nested \(x\)} + x\) expressions and you wished you (or your editor) could mach what starts and ends what math section:-)
@Jun-GooKwak \[ is same as \begin{equation} except that the latter adds an equation number. Never use either of them one after another, if you need a multiline display use one of the ams environments such as align or multline

@DavidCarlisle Thanks again for all of your help for all the times I pop in here. :)
