Q: Centering in tabularx and X columns

MatthiasHow can I center the column when using X in tabularx environment like in this example? \begin{tabularx}{\textwidth}{@{}lXXXXX@{}} 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 5 \\ \end{tabularx}

There is no visible sign that you modified it.
Some mod-black-magin... MbM, I guess.

@Werner The OP had asked for the dupe to be reverse (his as the 'main' question): this seemed reasonable here so I did it

@Werner Maybe a deleted comment or converting a non-answer to a comment. I was wondering myself some times.

@JosephWright Aahhh... I thought you had Community-status.

Q: Href in \subtitle

0xAXHow can i put href at the page subtitle? I have a: \usepackage[% verbose, colorlinks=true, naturalnames=true, linkcolor=blue, ]{hyperref} \begin{document} % % Title page % \title{Title} \subtitle{Subtitle} \setkomafont{subtitle}{\normalfont\Large} \href{http://www.wikibooks.org}{Wikiboo...

Please tell me that this is a duplicate. Writing an answer and getting a tick seems like stealing from a child.

@Nasser May i ask, on what kind of paper you are working on? Why do you need a table like this? Are there just numbers in your real document, or is this a constructed example? Cause, IMHO, nobody is going to read that.

@Johannes_B these are actual numbers, they indicates test case numbers. Yes, real document.

@Nasser Du you need thos lines? A description or labeling environment comes to mind.

@Johannes_B I am not following. I just simply wanted to document the test cases in one table. Can't Latex break a row that is too large? Is this what you are saying? I do not want to change the table, I'd like to have one table as is. If this is not possible in Latex, then fine. Thanks.

@Nasser Our longtable-expert is @DavidCarlisle. He knows the internals.
@Nasser I am afraid that @andrew confirms this.

@Nasser No, LaTeX can't break row tables, not even with longtable, and I don't think it will ever be able to do that. Your usage of table for such a thing seems to be wrong (with my Copy Editor hat on)

7:44 AM
@tohecz I found something that Latex can not do! Amazing. I thought Latex can do anything :)

@Nasser it can do that, so go and code it :p

@tohecz why is it wrong? I want to list test cases in a table. What if someone has 1000 test cases and they want to list in a table in different rows? Why is this so strange?
@tohecz I do not know latex internals to code in Latex.

@Nasser your table is not semantically a table, it is a list of lists

@tohecz ok, but I want to have the structure of a table. Have rows and columns and frame around them. Call it anything you like. Lets call it grid then. I do not know how to build a grid in latex. so I use a table.
so I should use an enumeration list instead? Is this what the suggestion? But I like to have the frame around.

@Nasser I see your point and I get it. But still, I certainly agree with Harish, the lines are distracting. I actually remove all vertical lines in tables when I edit them.
I would use a description, something like this (gimme a minute):

7:51 AM
@tohecz but even if I remove the vertical lines, this does not solve the problem with the breaking part.

@Nasser ^^This is basically the same as @tohecz example.
@Nasser Just to cover both cases.

@tohecz @Johannes_B thanks,. I see, so the idea is not to use longtable and go for free form solution using enumeration type, which does not have the restriction of the page breaking issues. no problem, will do that. I like both your solutions. So what do now? Should I delete my question? or if any one of you like to post your answer there I can accept it and we live happy ever after?

@Nasser Let the Q stay. Others might have a similar case.
@tohecz You can write an answer if you like.

@Johannes_B I believe that this is a dupe, but I'm not sure. I'll answer

8:08 AM
@Johannes_B I deny all knowledge

8:39 AM
@Johannes_B yep, that's it, but it doesn't seem to be a true dupe; the current one has a good example with a good solution (unlike the previous one)

@tohecz @DavidCarlisle also linked some Qs in the comments of the current Q

@Johannes_B oh yeah, I see now. Anyways, gotta go, so laters!

@tohecz Cu

9°C, I'm freezing to death, heeeeeelp!

@PauloCereda Hey! That's cold!

@egreg Help! :)

@PauloCereda Come here, we have 27.7.

@TorbjørnT. ooh warm weather. :)

@PauloCereda You'd enjoy the temperature in one of the train cars: probably around 30. The air conditioning somewhat failed. ;-)

10:27 AM
@egreg ooh that's a good thing. :)

@PauloCereda Try it. ;-) 30 with no ventilation, I mean.

@egreg Uh-oh, now that's a problem. :P

Cricket update:
England: 319 & 121-4 (53.1 overs)
India: 295 & 342 (103.1 overs)
England need just 198 runs, or rain.

@egreg Adele could be playing for England, so she would set fire to the rain. :)

10:48 AM
@egreg Zapped

11:43 AM
Is WhatsApp a fever near you guys?
In here it is.

@PauloCereda What's WhatsApp? ;-)

@egreg Uh-oh. :)

12:39 PM
Hi, like often, beamer is driving me mad. This time I try to handle multiline frametitle. If I have a multiline title then it's impossible to align the top of the title compared to a single line one. any hint?
P.S: I'm using varwidth to limit the width of the text
but I have similar issue with \vbox{\hsize=10cm\bfseries\strut\insertframetitle\strut} inside the frametitle definition

@s__C You know, posting an MWE really helps cause a supporter has something to test immediately.

nevermind. I got it. It works only if the \vbox has the same height as the beamercolorbox it sits into
weird stuff

@PauloCereda No time to scroll the doc, so a quick arara-Q: If i give 4 rules to the preamble (pdflatex, biber, 2 pdflatex) -> Does arara always run all 4 instances?

1:02 PM
@Johannes_B It does.
In order.

@PauloCereda Thanks. Every single time? Really?

@Johannes_B Yes.
Newer versions feature conditionals, but they have to be explicit. :)

@PauloCereda Is there any way to test if a file has changed since the last run?
@PauloCereda I suppose V4 will be great.

% arara: pdflatex
% arara: biber if missing('bbl') || changed('bbl')
% arara: pdflatex if missing('blg') || changed('blg')
@Johannes_B ^^ this, pretty much. :) For v6. :)
Not sure about extensions though, I always get confused. :)

@PauloCereda Ahh, looks pretty simple. Thanks.

1:06 PM
@Johannes_B There's also something like this:
% arara: pdflatex until !contains('log', 'undefined references')

@PauloCereda I guess this will enter an endless loop if one mistyped a key?

@Johannes_B Not at all, we have infinite loop detection. :)

@PauloCereda Ohh :-)

@Johannes_B I iz smart. :)

@PauloCereda Too bad i got so used to latexmk

1:12 PM
@Johannes_B No worries. :) We are not competitors. :) Brent uses latexmk a lot too.

@egreg I think your cricket reports are bringing bad luck

@PauloCereda One additional question: Why lualatexmk.yaml ?

@Johannes_B Brent's fault, not mine. :P

@PauloCereda I saw, but still ... WHY?? :-D

England: 319 & 202-8 (83.1 overs)
India: 295 & 342 (103.1 overs)

@Johannes_B Because. ^^

@PauloCereda "not competitors" in the way Germany and Brazil aren't competitors?

@DavidCarlisle How unkind. :)

@egreg BBC's balanced assessment of the state of play: This is unbelievable. Joe Root becomes the third England batsman since lunch to hole out trying to attack the short ball. The same plan from Ishant Sharma, the same result. Bouncer, hook, straight to Stuart Binny at long leg. Do these guys not watch what has been happening? They are like lemmings off the cliff. This Test match is done. Absolutely bewildering.

@DavidCarlisle I don't understand a word, but I guess the general sense is “England will be the losing party very soon”.

@DavidCarlisle It's perfectly fair
@egreg Yes

1:31 PM
Guys, does any of you know or have or use a Stagg headphone?

@PauloCereda ^^

@DavidCarlisle o.O
@David, @egreg: you guys have played Lemmings before, don't you? :)

1:49 PM
@egreg time for a new report...

@egreg @JosephWright @PauloCereda I've been experiencing weird problems with the Finder: (i) open the window of a directory and no files are displayed (ii) move files to Trash can take upwards of 30 secs to complete. Have you guys encountered either of these?

@DavidCarlisle Just short of 89 overs for ten wickets? Either India was bowling very well, or …
@AlanMunn Sometimes with Maverick. Not on this machine, though.

@egreg Yes, I'm running 10.9.4 Googling around seems to find hints of others with the same problem but no solutions either.

@AlanMunn I had something along these lines on Mavericks the other day. I think I cleaned the folder caching via whatisitsname and it stopped.

@PauloCereda whatisitsname?

1:53 PM
@AlanMunn Hold on, I'm trying to find the app name. :P
OnyX!

@PauloCereda Ah, ok. Maybe I'll give that a try.

@AlanMunn I always get confused with Deeper, they are both from the same softwarehouse.

@PauloCereda I wonder if this might also be the source of my Dropbox woes. It tends to hang an awful lot.

@AlanMunn I believe so, it looks very suspicious indeed.

@PauloCereda Fedora 22 will have a new package manager to replace yum.

2:03 PM
@JasperLoy Hey Jasper! Good to see you! How are... WHAAAAAAAA
Oh my, DNF!

@PauloCereda I am so happy Germany won the World Cup!

@JasperLoy :)

@PauloCereda One of those programs, I don't remember if it was that OnyX, had a quite peculiar behavior after an update: it simply erased the system.

@egreg Oh my! If I'm not mistaken, Deeper is pretty brutal.

Hello everybody...

2:14 PM
@ChristianHupfer Hallo! Ich heisse Paulo!
Und heute trinke ich Wasser. :)
Oh man, I'm so good at German.
:)

2:32 PM
@PauloCereda: Sorry, I was not at my computer
@PauloCereda: Your German is much better than my Portuguese ;-)

@AlanMunn External disk?

@PauloCereda Are Brazilians starting to learn German, in order to see how to play better Fußball?

I am thinking of learning German too.

@egreg It's a new technique. :)
@ChristianHupfer :)
@egreg Of course, Frank prefers #Goal. :)

@PauloCereda You should learn to spell it correctly: #Tor

2:42 PM
@egreg Tor?!
Oh my!

@PauloCereda I now use Linux Mint 17.

@JasperLoy ALINU. :)
(At Least It's Not Ubuntu)

@PauloCereda Ein Tor, Zwei Toren, Drei Toren, Vier Toren, Fünf Toren, Sechs Toren, Sieben Toren.

@PauloCereda: The German played Fußball ? Good joke :D

@egreg I see what you did there, you little rascal. :P
@ChristianHupfer Das Fussball ist sehr gut!
Und ein Bier, bitte!
Now we need to find some Hungarian phrasebook.
(@Joseph's spider sense is tingling)

2:46 PM
@PauloCereda: I think, other nations overestimate the meaning of this world championship for the German team

@ChristianHupfer You guys played very well, so that's good enough. :)
I will not buy this LaTeX3, it's scratched.
5

@PauloCereda: And now for something completely different... I prefer the most lethal joke by Ernest Scribbler ;-)

@PauloCereda Is it out?

@AlanMunn I had an issue with indexing: with my USB stick, Finder would try to index when I plugged in making things really slow (stick itself fine on e.g. work Windows system). Disabling indexing for the volume has cured the issue.

@JasperLoy Apparently, way before than LaTex2 itself. :P

2:49 PM
@ChristianHupfer Yes: Brazilians thought the game was futebol, so they got lost.

@egreg We always get lost. :)

@PauloCereda: There were two peanuts walk down the Straße... one was assaulted one ... German V - Joke ;-)

@ChristianHupfer LOL I don't get it. :P

@PauloCereda: You know, the German version of the most lethal joke... ;-)

@ChristianHupfer oooooooooh!
:)

2:55 PM
holla
anybody home??

@JosephWright No there's no external disk at all. This just my main hard disk. But based on @Paulo 's advice I ran Onyx and it said my drive needed to be repaired which I've now done using DiskUtility, so maybe that will clear up the problem.
@subhamsoni Hi

@AlanMunn Ah probably a broken index.

@PauloCereda Which might explain the slowness with anything involving file listing.

@AlanMunn Indeed.

@PauloCereda: "I call the late Arthur Aldridge" ... "Mr Aldridge I put it to you that you are dead."

3:12 PM
@ChristianHupfer :)

Hi
I need a small help
I want to redefine the section command
in the article class
as in moderncv

@subhamsoni The simplest way is to use the titlesec package, I should think.

I know that @AlanMunn ;).... But titlesec documentation is driving me crazyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
This is what I wanted
The rectangle can be achieved with tikz
but how do I join these two ????

Guys, I think we have a problem here.
This user usually posts questions along the lines of "my code doesn't compile". The questions don't get the effort from the OP.
Worse, no answers are accepted.
I believe we could keep an eye on such questions.
Actually, I stand corrected: apparently some answers are accepted, but the questions are too vague. :(

@subhamsoni It's certainly a bit on the terse side as documentation goes. Something like this:
\titleformat{\section}[block]{\normalfont\bfseries\sffamily\color{blue}}{\rule[.5ex]{1cm}{2pt}}{1em}{}

3:28 PM
@PauloCereda I can assure he accepts answers. The good ones, I mean. ;-)

@egreg True. He accepted one of mine, I just noticed. :)

@PauloCereda :P

@egreg Meanwhile, David is focused on cricket. :)

@AlanMunn there seems to be an error

@PauloCereda No, he's drinking his beer^H^H^H^H tea, thinking to how bad England is at cricket. Sorry, thinking to Lego.

3:30 PM
Speaking of documentation, I cannot wait to write a whole section on the new arara manual about why my conditionals fail and explaining about short circuit features. :)

! Undefined control sequence.
<argument> \normalfont \bfseries \sffamily \color
{blue}
l.21 \section{Career Objective}

?

Process has been terminated ...

@egreg ooh! :)

@subhamsoni Add \usepackage{xcolor}

@PauloCereda On patrol, I see...

:16696644 \documentclass{article}
\usepackage[dvipsnames]{xcolor}
\usepackage{titlesec}
\titleformat{\section}[block]{\normalfont\bfseries\sffamily\color{blue}}{\rule[.5ex]{1cm}{2pt}}{1em}{}

\begin{document}
\section{A section}
Some text after the section
\section{Another section}
\end{document}

3:32 PM
@Werner Merci. :)

@AlanMunn @egreg thanks :)

@subhamsoni And notice, no TikZ needed. :)

yessss
;)

@subhamsoni Don't use a bazooka when a fly swatter will do the job.

@AlanMunn How dare you, TikZ mafia will break your legs. :P

3:35 PM
:) :) :) ok ok
@AlanMunn

@PauloCereda I've joined @DavidCarlisle in the PMTZRM (Picture Mode TikZ Resistance Movement) We sorely need a better acronym though.
7

@AlanMunn LOL

So @AlanMunn you ain't gonna use TikZ
here after

@subhamsoni No, I love TikZ actually since I use trees a lot in my work and so it is invaluable. But it does add a lot of time to compiling your document so it's a good idea to avoid it for simple things if you can.
@PauloCereda LOL

3:42 PM
hmmm
Guys any idea about LaTeX 3???

hi guys, can you tell me why \thispagestyle{empty} messes up the indentation of the first paragraph?
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{lipsum}
\title{title}
\author{}
\date{}
\begin{document}
\maketitle
\noindent
\thispagestyle{empty}
\lipsum[1-2]
\end{document}

its not because of thispagestyle{empty}
but
\noindent
remove it and see

no
i do want the first paragraph without indentation
see? "Lorem" is shifted a little
without \thispagestyle{empty} it's perfectly aligned

@izabera Use \thispagestyle{empty}%.

@Werner thank you, that works.
i still think it sucks, btw

3:57 PM
@izabera Adding some extra lines help.
Empty lines, I mean. :)

@izabera What is "it"?

@Werner A closure variable? :P

@Werner i mean that i have to add a % after something that shouldn't require a %

@izabera Uhhm, no. It requires that because of your usage. If you don't want to put a % at the end, then place \thispagestyle{empty} in the preamble. It will default to the first page...

@izabera A command such as \thispagestyle should be given between paragraphs, whenever possible
@Werner Not if the first page has \maketitle

4:00 PM
is there any secret documentation i missed?

@egreg Of course.
@izabera On the use of % or page styles?

both i guess -.-

@izabera \noindent starts a paragraph, \thispagestyle{empty} doesn't print any text, but the space at the end of the line counts in the paragraph.

@izabera The former: Somewhere in the TeX Book. The latter, experience.

@Werner Wait for egreg to quote the page number. By heart.
wait for it, wait for it

4:02 PM
@PauloCereda I was going to search, but then thought better. ;)

@egreg i see, i swapped those two lines and it works without % symbols

@Werner :)

thank you all

@PauloCereda Page 26, of course

@PauloCereda I've commented

4:04 PM
@egreg Of... course... I... mean...

@Werner Which refers to line 13 in story.tex

@subhamsoni There is a rumour yet to be confirmed that it will follow LaTeX 2

@Werner You typed in story.tex, didn't you?
@PauloCereda I won't reveal my secret trick for “remembering” pages in the TeXbook.

@izabera It only sucks because of the incorrect input (\noindent is best not used at all, but if you are going to use it, you used it in the wrong place) ah I see @egreg already said same (he's the expert on % at end of line)

@subhamsoni What do you mean?

4:09 PM
@DavidCarlisle The source of at least 250K of my rep.

@DavidCarlisle is there something like "every time you use a \noindent god kills a kitten"?

@izabera yes

lol

@egreg That... and TikZ...
@DavidCarlisle ...oh no, that's the source of David's ~150K.

@izabera the class file decides when you need to indent, the document markup shouldn't change. article for example suppresses indentation after headings but not after \maketitle (as it assumes there will be a heading) if you want unindented initial paragraph you should arrange that \maketitle suppresses the initial indent, not use \noindent in the document.

4:18 PM
@DavidCarlisle like \newcommand{\newmaketitle}{\maketitle\noindent}? or should i create a new documentclass?

@izabera It's unfortunately not that easy AFAIK :-/

@egreg ack'ing it? :)
@JosephWright Thank you. :)

4:33 PM
@PauloCereda Oh, no! That wouldn't work.

@izabera No!!!! that would just put \noindent in the wrong place automatically:-) latex never uses \noindent to suppress indentation

@izabera Actually, it's far worse: someone uses Comic Sans in a Word document. :)

@PauloCereda or egreg uses comic sans italic

@DavidCarlisle ooh that's evil. :)

@AlanMunn :D

@AlanMunn Beware, @egreg will definitely kill you now. :)
@tohecz Tom! :)

@PauloCereda hi :)
@PauloCereda How are you?

@tohecz I got the flu, it's very cold in here these days, but fine. :) And you, buddy? :)

@PauloCereda tired like ... I don't know who, but fine
I got home from the camp 2 days ago, we had a family funeral, and I don't sleep well because of extreme temperatures

4:53 PM
@PauloCereda Definition of 'very cold' please... :)

so kind-of opposite from your situation
@AlanMunn yeah, and this

@AlanMunn Hey, this morning we had 10C. :)

@PauloCereda Pobrezinho.

@AlanMunn Frio siberiano. :)

@PauloCereda this night, it was 30C and like 80% in my bedroom :( I so miss the campsite

4:55 PM
@tohecz Oh no!

@PauloCereda I went to bed at 3am, just so that I'm tired enough to fall asleep. I woke up at 8

@PauloCereda @tohecz Here we're having beautiful 27C and sunny with 18C at night.

@AlanMunn it was 22C at night, but I miss a good fan
I actually have windows to the east and west, so I can always choose the flow direction from the cold side to the hot one, but I need to get the damn fan

5:16 PM
@AlanMunn I'm fainting!
Paradoxes of time: the train I'm on is late, so I'll arrive earlier than expected.

@egreg The only thing I couldn't do was make the text italic, because Comic Sans has not italics. I guess I could have underlined instead. :)

@AlanMunn At least you didn't use Lenny. ;-)

@egreg Ask and thou shalt receive.
Oh, I really like this one...

@AlanMunn noooooooooooooooooo!
@AlanMunn there's slanted, isn't there? if not, you can always fake slanted somehow for sure

On my train, drinking my well deserved glass of wine, I can't see pictures in chat, lalala lalala. ;-)

A user has a table with just two columns (one-char each), but about 100 lines long. He thought of setting it columnwise. Is this (technically) possible without manually breaking it down?

@tohecz C'mon, there's something to be said for reaching the pinnacle of bad taste. :)

@AlanMunn I read somewhere (probably based on some sort of anecdotal evidence) that CS could be a great font for helping dyslexic people.
@AlanMunn How about rainbow Comic Sans? :)

@PauloCereda Here is one such "somewhere": bdadyslexia.org.uk/about-dyslexia/further-information/…

And make it underline text. :)

@PauloCereda it's true that dyslexic people confirm CS is well legible. On the other hand, there's dozens of such fonts

@PauloCereda ...and then there's this:

Q: Is the Comic Sans font easier to read for dyslexics?

tpg2114After getting into an argument with a friend about the use/existence of the Comic Sans font, he said that it is one of the few typefaces that virtually eliminates confusion among dyslexics. It appears others have the same opinion. Many sources present anecdotal evidence such as: Most signif...

@Werner @tohecz: ah thanks, I thought people were trolling me.

@DavidCarlisle I'll run out and buy it right away. Then my life will be complete.

A: Tools for automating document compilation

RaphaelWith all solutions I tried back in the day (definitely not all), I had at least one of the following issues. You have to manually specify which commands should be executed how often and in which order. Temporary files crowd the document folder. No automatic rebuild on file changes. No support f...

^^Sounds interesting.

@tohecz Hi

8:13 PM
@tohecz Very unhappy because of bad news from the cricket pitch.

@egreg ah this

@tohecz They brought civilization and cricket to India and this is the reward. ;-)

@egreg :D
@egreg they've got the tea, do they need more?

@PauloCereda: My hovercraft is full of eels ...

@tohecz As everybody knows, it was Panoramix who gave tea to England.

8:24 PM
@ChristianHupfer :)
@egreg Was Panoramix the one married to a beautiful lady? :)

@PauloCereda This page mentions no wife: fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panoramix
@PauloCereda That's Agecanonix (Geriatrix in UK, Matusalemix in Italy). In Portuguese it can be Agecanonix or Decanonix.

@egreg Oh it was this bloke: fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/…
@egreg I remember him as Veteranix. :)

9:14 PM
@JosephWright I was looking at \str_case_x:nnTF; the description of the function has \str_case_x:nnn, which is wrong.

@egreg Fixed in SVN
@egreg Why do people always spot these things just after a CTAN update?

@JosephWright isn't it one of the Murphy laws

@JosephWright If debugging is the process of removing software bugs, then programming must be the process of putting them in.
