Can somebody help me out quick, I have trouble with the site being on and off right now? If I define a newenvironment and start off with \small in the definition, will I have to cancel that at the end of the newenvironment declaration so the text after it won't be small? Or will that only apply to the environment anyway?
So something like, \newenvironment{prettytable}{\small}{???}
Do I need something like \endsmall there or is that implied anyway?
 
@atticae No, it will apply only in the environment. But you should end the environment with \par.

Is that necessary even if I wrap something like tabularx in my newenvironment? I would guess that \endtabularx already does something like \par?
 
@atticae You need to be careful with tabularx because it is not really a regular environment: the body of the tabualarx table is actually the argument of a command.

@AlanMunn I am trying to setup a basic predefined table layout with header column and alternating table rows. Also small text and single line spacing. I have figured it out thanks to some answers on the site, now I wanted to put it in a newenvironment so I don't have to repeat all that code for every table.
It pretty much works now, I just wanted to make sure about the \small part not being ended.
Unless there are some hefty side effects I should know about which are not obvious at first sight, I think I am good.

Also may I just say you guys on tex.SE really rock and the answers on the site have saved me more than once.

@atticae tabularx doesn't do \par and anyway the \par would have to be the last thing in your end code, so the group containing the small ended with par

Nevermind, figured it out. Fabricated a vectorfunction and made GeoGebra do the rest. Could've used tikz/pstricks/asymptote but anyhow.

@michal.h21 Thanks for the fix. I sumbitted it and few others I had as minor bugs to tex4ht so they do not get lost and at least there is an official record of them. I put them as minor bugs.
@michal.h21 do you I should submit this as bug also against tex4ht? tex.stackexchange.com/questions/161907/… the problem using siunitx with mathml? as I am not sure what is going on with this one.

A friend of mine was encouraged by his adviser to write his Proyecto Eléctrico using LaTeX

I learnt about TeX because of my professors. They all use it. And sometime very early, some of them said that we all should learn. So I did.

Even there in Math School, they ignore a lot of things. Many people just copy and paste and old outdated preamble. They don't know what the lines there are for. They just use it. I learnt a lot from TeX.se

oh and tried to convince my girlfriend to write her thesis using LaTeX too. She is studying microbiology. So I was teaching her, and she liked and got the basics. Later she refused cuz she had to deliver her thesis in some format imposed by the Colegio de Médicos here which was ofcourse in Word :-(
 
@leo Hahahahahha, it was pretty easy with my wife: I already had a couple of years of "expertise" ahead of her. Of course, all the wisdom came from tex.stackexchange

@MarioS.E. no yet. Teaching, but I think it don't think it really counts. The market for pure math is growing here. Of course one can always work with the universities but it will be mostly teaching. Some of my professors complained that it was hard to get funded to do research (they actually said "it is so hard to do research here", so I think it's either that or that they are lazy, but then what do you want a PhD for?). Outside uni, mostly financial institutions hire pure mathematicians.
@MarioS.E. Some tech related companies too. I was so glad that this year in the SIMMAC there were a lot of presentations by private researchers from banks and some (like two or three) from private universities. So it seems it's growing, and I hope so :-)

@michal.h21 I see. Ok. So we have to wait until siunitx removes this restriction for tex4ht then. Ok. Now I understand what is the issue. It just means I can't use mathml+mathjax with tex4ht since I use SI in math mode, which works ok in tex4ht if I do not use mathml+mathjax.

@PauloCereda There are a few other villages where a German dialect is (was) spoken, but have nothing to do with the German spoken in Südtirol, which has a different history: Sappada, that's not far from Sauris, Luserna and the villages in the “valle dei Mocheni”. A Germanic dialect (cimbro) used to be spoken in the “Altopiano di Asiago”, but it's almost lost nowadays. It survives in some villages near Verona, in Lessinia.

Similarly, in Southern Italy we have places where Albanian or Greek is spoken. There is also a place in Calabria where Occitan is spoken: Guardia Piemontese. Some Waldensians went there fleeing from Inquisition.

I just asked in the math chat, but no really elegant solutions over there, but the really smart people are here anyway, so maybe anyone here can help :P
anyone know an efficient algorithm to determine which of n sectors a vector is? the most obvious case being 4 sectors, so simply the quadrants of a circle, but preferably for any number of sectors
I have the feeling there is a very elegant trigonometry trick I'm missing here ;-)
