@egreg: Sorry. Is it necessary to use \left( and \right) for representing the product of quadratic expressions or is it enough just to use ( and )?

6 hours later…
7:33 AM
@FifaEarthCup2014 I can't believe you asked @egreg that:-) He's been waging a one man campaign for years on the evils of using \left\right :-)

@DavidCarlisle Can you give me a link where he explains why those are evil?

7:58 AM
@DavidCarlisle OK. Thanks.

@Johannes_B @FifaEarthCup2014 several but this might be a start tex.stackexchange.com/questions/173717/…

@DavidCarlisle Thanks. I'll have a look.
@DavidCarlisle i like the last point in your list :-)

@Johannes_B I try to be informative in my answers.

@DavidCarlisle One man campaign? ;-)

@DavidCarlisle Did you see this one?

Q: Use \cellcolor in \tabulary

NeptiloThe \cellcolor command from package colortbl doesn't seem to have any effect in a tabulary environment, though it works in tabular. Here is a minimal example: \documentclass[a4paper]{article} \usepackage[english]{babel} \usepackage[utf8]{inputenc} \usepackage{tabulary} \usepackage{colortbl} \b...

@egreg commented already
@egreg well I help a bit but I'm just a private to your general:-)
ohh first time I've had an attempted spam edit I think:

Help!!!! I am trying to compile a final run of my thesis that needs to go to my supervisor today. What a surprise, suddenly stuff goes wrong. I've made a couple of minor changes (e.g. removing the \usepackage{glossaries} that I am no longer using and a few changes to the text, and I've updated my .bst file. This morning, there is now no equation counter. What can I have done wrong - no matter how many times I compile I get: "Latex warning: Reference `eq:blah' missing".
Any ideas what I could have done to cause that?
Ha. Never mind. Also unsurprisingly, as soon as I ask for help I find the problem.
A very weird one, I am using subimport, somehow one of the lines of subimport had changed from \subimport{introduction/}{introduction} to \subimport{introduction/}{introduction.tex}. Most peculiar. Why would I suddenly do that? Though I did fall asleep working on the document last night, so maybe I was sleep-typing??

Nice palindrome, isn't it?

@egreg so what are you going to do when you pass 300k? no palindromes or acquire a few downvotes to change your parity?

10:53 AM
@DavidCarlisle I'll decide. Probably I'll just downvote you.

11:08 AM
@egreg well I need that: I haven't had a palindrome in ages

@DavidCarlisle I'm afraid I won't too until I reach 500K

@egreg just mention emacs and the vim crowd will downvote you (or I got downvoted for saying left right makes a mathinner:-)

Hi ummm.. I can ran into a little issue that's probably best illustrated by this example:
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{tikz}
\usetikzlibrary{fpu}
\usepackage{xintexpr}

\xintNewExpr\gamarray[1]{round(#1,60)}

\begin{document}

\pgfkeys{/pgf/fpu,/pgf/fpu/output format=fixed}
\pgfmathparse{\gamarray{-.5793070335782135784625493333333e-31}}\pgfmathresult

\pgfmathparse{2*\gamarray{-.5793070335782135784625493333333e-31}}\pgfmathresult

\end{document}
I'm losing a lot of accuracy from the fpu library. :-(

Hi. I have a spacing problem in beamer when using itemize in two columns. I copied a custom command to get rid of space below the title of the frame but it nicely fails with twocolumns...
\makeatletter
\define@key{beamerframe}{t}[true]{% top
\beamer@frametopskip=5pt %<-- was: .2cm plus .5\paperheight\relax%
\beamer@framebottomskip=0pt plus 1fill\relax%
\beamer@frametopskipautobreak=\beamer@frametopskip\relax%
\beamer@framebottomskipautobreak=\beamer@framebottomskip\relax%
\def\beamer@initfirstlineunskip{%
Plus it seems that having several columns environments in the same frame is causing trouble

11:52 AM
Yay @topskip is here! :)

@PauloCereda nice duck!

@topskip Danke! :) It's a cricketeer duck. :)

I think that's the coolest duck I've ever seen (besides those on my dish at a chinese restaurant ;-))

@topskip ooh! :)

Everybody here is learing a lot about brazil these days. My son taught me some portuguese words yesterday (I have to admit that I don't remember any of them)

11:57 AM
@topskip ooh cool! :)
@topskip: an important sentence in Portuguese: patos são legais (ducks are cool). :)

Now he's trying something that he has seen on TV last weekend about Brazilian kids: shaking a hand to make the thumb and middle finger (?) get together and making a clicking sound (don't know how to express it).

@topskip ooh I know what you are saying! :)
@topskip: when I was a kid, I used to call dogs with that clicking sound. :)

@1010011010 Almost certain there is some dim-based stuff in there: not surpising
@1010011010 The LaTeX3 FPU offers a known situation, if not in this case as many dp as something like the fp package:
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{tikz,expl3}
\usetikzlibrary{fpu}
\usepackage{xintexpr}
\ExplSyntaxOn
\let\fpeval\fp_eval:n
\ExplSyntaxOff

\xintNewExpr\gamarray[1]{round(#1,60)}

\begin{document}

\fpeval{\gamarray{-.5793070335782135784625493333333e-31}}

\fpeval{2*\gamarray{-.5793070335782135784625493333333e-31}}

\end{document}
@1010011010 I'm wondering what you are after here: xintexpr is specifically set up to do arbitrary number sizes, but something like pgf doesn't really need to do such things

12:18 PM
@topskip "clicking your fingers" normal expression (assuming that's what you mean)

@DavidCarlisle ok thanks!

@PauloCereda speaking of ducks it was "fathers day" in UK the other day (an institution invented by the greetings card companies to extract money from the population as far as I can see) as M obviously knows that I am very grown up and serious he got me this useful device to fit to any pencil while at work.... coolthings.com.au/desktop-duck-shoot.html

@DavidCarlisle oh my, that's awesome! :)
@David: you could hit @egreg with that thing. :)

@PauloCereda It's designed for shooting ducks so egreg is safe (unlike some other inhabitants of this chat)

@DavidCarlisle Shooting at ducks? Terrible!

12:27 PM
@DavidCarlisle Uh-oh. :)
@egreg And apparently the ducks are already dead, look at the X in their eyes!

@JosephWright I want to translate old C code, using pgfmath or whatever other math processor that can handle basic logic trees and loops. I want to code the following:
double attribute_hidden chebyshev_eval(double x, const double *a, const int n)
{
    double b0, b1, b2, twox;
    int i;

    if (n < 1 || n > 1000) ML_ERR_return_NAN;

    if (x < -1.1 || x > 1.1) ML_ERR_return_NAN;

    twox = x * 2;
    b2 = b1 = 0;
    b0 = 0;
    for (i = 1; i <= n; i++) {
b2 = b1;
b1 = b0;
b0 = twox * b1 - b2 + a[n - i];
    }
    return (b0 - b2) * 0.5;
}

@PauloCereda Otherwise they would run away and David is too old for taking aim at a moving target.

@egreg You're just jealous that all you've got is a palindromic rep, but I've got a rubber band shooting pencil.

@DavidCarlisle :D

@1010011010 The L3 FPU is (supposed to be) IEEE 754 compliant: would that do?

12:32 PM
@JosephWright I'll try it out. I have a feeling I'll still run into problems using those small values in an array setting, but it's a first step.
OR does L3 FPU have something for that too?

@1010011010 It's floating, not fixed, point so depends on what you need

Basically I have an array of 42 values between e-1 and e-32ish. This array will replace double *a in the code above.

@JosephWright If you need accurate numeric computation you need hmmm, a real numeric library (I've got one to hand that will evaluate chebyshev polynomials:-)

@DavidCarlisle Well yes, I realise that
@DavidCarlisle Not really TeX's forte

@JosephWright yes it wasn't really aimed at you:-)

12:35 PM
Hush David. :-(
TeX can do anything, as long as you squeeze hard enough! Right? RIGHT?

@1010011010 In theory, as it's Turing complete
@DavidCarlisle I've been tracking down some of the format-building stuff. I've now got a better idea on things like the Unicode letters stuff, interchartoks, etc. Comments to the team list later today, I hope.

@1010011010 it's not the programming language it's the way its programmed. Numeric libraries have years (several hundred man years in our case) of work in organising computation in ways to avoid rounding errors. So while it's fun to program things in Tex, I would be vary wary of using any computational results for anything other than fun or for low accuracy computations good enough for plotting.

@JosephWright Honestly, I don't need pinpoint accurate results with errors under 10^-16, but I've achieved 10^-7 error for some algorithms I already coded and I think this can be achieved for other algorithms too. Using arrays and small numbers have been a battle from the very start and I have to find a balance between presenting the problem in a solvable way and presenting the full extent of what I'm trying to do. :-/
@DavidCarlisle Thanks for mentioning it because that's precisely the intended end use case! But the numbers are off so far with my current algorithms and functions that the plot makes no sense.

@DavidCarlisle Depends on the sort of accuracy you work with: I'd hope TeX-based calcs can work out masses of molecules for me well enough! (I need around 6 s.f. max :-))

@1010011010 yes well that's the thing with numeric computation: you can be a fraction out and invert it or take an exponential and you are suddenly nowhere near. For my PhD I stuck to pure math over finite fields, far more reassuring:-)

12:43 PM
@DavidCarlisle I'm off by a factor 1.5 to 2. In the case where the filling under the graph should be subtle, the entire graph is filled. I have hope that TeX can do better.

@egreg ooh! :)

@1010011010 yes well as Joseph indicated the l3 FPU is supposed to be IEEE double arithmetic so TeX can do as well as your hardware, the question isn't whether tex can, it's can you:-)

@DavidCarlisle I have always been the inhibiting factor.
I'll look at the L3FPU when I get home. Thanks for your insight so far.,

@1010011010 :-) well I didn't mean you personally of course, it's just a logical outcome of turing completeness, you should be able to get the same results using any system, it's just a matter of programming them suitably....

@PauloCereda Well, it appears that Englishmen are weak at aiming even if the fixed target is 732cm (24ft) wide and 244cm (8ft) high.

12:49 PM
@egreg cricket stumps are nowhere near as big as that

@DavidCarlisle That's why you never win at cricket.

@egreg true:(

@egreg :-)
@DavidCarlisle Also they use proper units

hello tex friends, small question
is it possible, similar to bibtex, when using glossaires to only print the abbreviations used in the document?

1:11 PM
@Trefex I believe so. But I'm not an expert in acronyms and abbreviations, as I tend to avoid them as much as possible.

me too, but let's say cyrbonyl cyanide 4-(trifluoromethoxy) phenylhydrazone
also called TMRM might be a bit tricky to spell out every time :)
@egreg it was more of a cleaning up question, as I found 1 or 2 abbreviations that re not used anymore and are thus "ghost" acronyms so to say...

@Trefex Happily I'm not into chemistry. ;-)

sorry, it's FCCP
not TMRM but you get my point ;)
ah on an unrelated note
how do you convince your scholar peers that typography is as crucial as content?

@Trefex You can't

@Trefex Showing them a poorly printed page and the same contents in shining typeset form? I'm afraid it won't work, though.

1:15 PM
@JosephWright so why do some people care? Is it innate?

leo
@Trefex some are smart

@Trefex To some extent I guess

or do people assume a well typographed is better without knowing it's because of typography?

leo
bom dia to all

@Trefex We've just had one student who's use LaTeX to write up as she wanted a really good-looking result, but that's very unusual
@Trefex Sometimes the opposite

1:17 PM
like a cheqing gum making people more "social" even though nobody knows why they look more "social"
reading is a visual process, shouldn't it have to look beautiful?

@leo Less than three hours to the big event!

@Trefex I have colleagues who would be suspicious of anything which looks too much like a printed paper if asked to review it: they actively prefer a traditional manuscript

leo
@egreg indeed

how strange...

leo
here it would be at 10

1:18 PM
it looks "too good"

leo
but they are not allowed to sell beer till 11
which might be a problem

@Trefex They feel it might affect how you review, for example

ye but looking at a crappy manuscript, typograhpically speaking, makes me more suspicious @Jos
because it makes my eyes bleed so to say
then i would already be in a "bad" mood to start

@leo Wise supporters have their own stock.

@Trefex We get some very interesting stuff

1:21 PM
i don't know, kind of like if you go to a job interview unshaved, unwashed, and dressed in sports leggings @JosephWright

leo
@egreg yeah, I'm deciding, but I think I'll better watch at home

@Trefex All about expectation: we expect to see traditional manuscripts

well latex is traditional
s*&@y word is not
i'm not saying to put flower power in latex to make the document pretty like a button

@Trefex Not round here

i beg you pardon? oh i used a swear word?
Sorry, Word is very capable, meant no offense to the friends at M$

1:29 PM
@Trefex Sorted :-)

thanks :D

@Trefex I can only observe what I see: chemists by-and-large use Word or another word processor (I have a few OO-using colleagues)

@JosephWright that is true. Hopefully journals in those fields will one day see the cost-saving incentive in providing tex templates and not typographing everything themselves

@Trefex Doubtful: they don't use TeX for the final steps in any case, and there would be very strong resistance in the community
@Trefex Floats are quite tricky in chemistry so it would not be that easy to simply leave things to the user

ah well, biology then or related fields?
i'll fight to convince people to at least consider latex in my institute :)

1:34 PM
@Trefex I've had one victory, so it may be worth a try :-)
@Trefex At the same time, I'm a realist. For example, I'm currently working on a draft paper in Word and have a grant outline where submission has to be in Word format

a bug in picture mode:( I'll have to start using tikz
5

@DavidCarlisle Quick decision on this would be good: I need to ship multicol fix asap

leo
@egreg :D

@JosephWright it's been that way for 30 years I don't think it can need that quick a fix, although \long\gdef\picture#1{\leavevmode\pictur@#1} would probably do it...

@DavidCarlisle :-)
@DavidCarlisle This is why I think xparse should have a setting for 'not vertical mode' or similar :-)

2:02 PM
I am trying to find best font to use. so it is both pdf and tex4ht/HTML eco-friendly. This is what I know use:
\usepackage{etex}
\makeatletter
\edef\texforht{TT\noexpand\fi
\@ifpackageloaded{tex4ht}
{\noexpand\iftrue}
{\noexpand\iffalse}}
\makeatother

\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\usepackage{lmodern}
I do not know anything about fonts in Latex. I just try things and load packages until I find something nice. Here is screen shot
The top one is what I now use. I like it only because it is more dark. The bottom one I do not know what it was as I lost the code for it. Which you think looks better? The top one or the bottom one? The top one uses the code I show above. The bottom one I do not know what I use for it.

@Nasser should be easy enough to check what fonts are in there just use pdffonts commandline utility or acrobat fonts menu

oh, I also load these packages
\usepackage{mathptmx}
\usepackage{bm}
@DavidCarlisle thanks. did not know about that. will look into it now.

in the menuitem can I put point in the end of sentence ?

@PauloCereda After hours of discussion, they forced me to install it again.... My stomach aches
apparently it got fatter

for example :
1. text.
?
or without point ?

2:07 PM
@Nasser why mathptmx with lmodern? that's inconsistent (choosing words carefully:-)

@percusse Oh no!

@PauloCereda But I'll use Python for the computations and save it as a mat file :) Long live h5py.org

@fahdijbeli in a section heading? usually without the . but different publications have different styles

@DavidCarlisle As I said, I have no clue about fonts, I just load packages to try things or when I read someone mentions it that it is good. I wish there was an easy to follow guide to tell users in simple terms which packages to load for fonts. There are so many and each time I google this, I get different people saying to load something else
@DavidCarlisle what is the canonical package sets to load for good math fonts? I know I need T1, but what else? etc... There are so many.

@fahdijbeli The period helps in showing that the number is a label and not part of the text.

2:11 PM
@Nasser well lmodern is derived from the original computer modern font set which of course was designed by Knuth to have matching math and text fonts. mathptmx (is a very old) virtual font hack to cobble together some math fonts using the original standard postscipt times/helvetica/courier/symbol font set so that it looked better when using times roman body fonts

@fahdijbeli But, as David says, it's uncommon for section numbers, except in Germany.

@percusse :)
@percusse: I'm currently doing almost the same workflow: replace Python by R and Matlab by Mathematica. :)

@PauloCereda No replace R with pandas lib :P

Darn! A green tick ruined my palindromic rep.

@percusse No pandas, only ducks. :)

2:14 PM
@PauloCereda pandas.pydata.org
you'll come to the poorly illuminated side soon

@percusse I could tweak arara to perform stats too... hmmmm
arara will be the new Matlab.

@DavidCarlisle I used mathptmx as it was recommended here

@Nasser If you want poor typography, use mathptmx.

2:16 PM
and it looks nice

@percusse lalalala can't hear you lalalalala
<3

Ok, will remove mathptmx. Thanks @egrep. But which is the canonical set I need to load? how many are there and which ones. I am confused on this. If there is an example latex file I can look at to tell me exactly which ones to use, no less and no more.

@PauloCereda I used arara for getting the data refreshed via PythonTeX behind the scenes and externalize bunch of GnuPlot back-ended pgfplots graphs via Pandas. It is perfect. So thanks a lot for that :)
One click and I get all the reports
which would easily occupy me 20 mins of matlab nonsense

may be I should ask this on main board and have some scream at me?

@percusse o.O

2:19 PM
@Nasser There is no canonical set.

ok thanks freinds

@egreg you see, this is what makes Latex hard. Then how is a new user supposed to know which packages to load?

@PauloCereda Exactly. So convenient.

@percusse That's why you are in the team. :) You help me keep sanity. :)

@Nasser ?
@Nasser You need no font package to begin with. If you like, you can change the default font.

2:26 PM
@JosephWright I've updated my question. Maybe it will clarify. Maybe it will turn you off so much you'll go to drink a cup of coffee and watch cricket for the rest of the day.

@egreg I mean how will new user know which font packages to load/use to avoid conflict if there is no known sets to load. I need to use \usepackage[T1]{fontenc}? how about \usepackage{lmodern}? how about \usepackage{amsfonts}? do I need \usepackage{mathptmx}? etc.... I do not know how to change default font. How many packages do I need to load to change default font? Is there a simple document that describes all of this?

@Nasser I can't follow you. You're citing a good guide (although I don't agree recommending mathptmx); that's what guides are for, aren't they?

@egreg no problem, I'll just keep trying ones until I find something I really like. thanks.

@Nasser mathptm(x) only makes sense when using times as body font and not embedding fonts as basically you can make a ps or pdf file that contains no fonts and is much smaller, when people were paying by the second to download that was an issue, even though the typography was always a bit suspect (or as @egreg puts it, "poor")

@DavidCarlisle Presently also mathptmx embeds fonts.

2:37 PM
@Nasser asking what is the canonical set doesn't have an answer, it's like asking "what is the best colour"
@egreg yes I know so it doesn't make sense at all:-)

@DavidCarlisle Duck yellow. :)

@PauloCereda Not verde-oro?

@egreg dark white. :)

@PauloCereda Sorry, I prefer bright black.

@Nasser why is it hard? for many years there was effectively only one set and no one ever thought about fonts you just went \documentstyle{article}\begin{document}xxx so move on a few decades and there are now lots of possibilities, but you don't have to use any of them, computer modern is still a reasonable choice, if you don't like the look of it you can choose something else but you can't really expect a "canonical" choice.

2:44 PM
@egreg :) Surely xcolour supports it. :)

@DavidCarlisle what about amsfonts? Isn't that required to load?

@Nasser well only if you want them

@DavidCarlisle and I thought one must do \usepackage[T1]{fontenc} ?
Ok. I use amspackages for everything. so I have to use it.

@Nasser T1 encoding is a good idea in general (but not that important if writing in English, and irrelevant to maths fonts)

I do not know why I load \usepackage[T1]{fontenc} but I read it is needed.

2:48 PM
@Nasser amsfonts is needed for \mathfrak; it's automatically loaded by amssymb (which provides several math symbols). The T1 encoding is necessary for European languages different from English.

@Nasser the original OT1 encoding is 7bit ascii (more or less) so e-acute is an e with an accent constructed with \accent placed over it, that looks OK but as it isn't a single letter you can't specify hyphenation for words with accented letters. T1 is an 8bit encoding (latin1 more or less) and so has accented European letters as letters that can take part in hyphenation patterns

leo
hmmm we go white..

I like to have more than one title in my beamer presentations (sort of an intro to another section) but that updates the title in the sidebar. I'm using the hannover theme. Does anyone know how to keep the title in the sidebar fixed?

@Argo Does \title have an optional argument? I believe it has.
Ah scratch that. I guess I misunderstood the question.

I love you
That works :)

2:57 PM
o.O
<3

Now I'm just getting a bunch of warnings about multiple authors defined, no big deal

@PauloCereda Today someone sent me this about Matlab, That the designers of the language sat down, considered the options, and chose the WORST POSSIBLE of all possible ways to do things

leo
@egreg did you know that we classified 2 - 1 against Sweden in June 20 in Italy 90?

@percusse LOL

leo
no that I am superstitious :P

3:05 PM
@leo You should be happy with that. Why bother about winning again?

leo
ha ha

@leo Besides, beating England is more exciting.

@egreg: Buffon is back. :)

@PauloCereda Yes. Let's hope his ankle is good.

leo
@egreg you think?
Oh I have to show you something

3:07 PM
@leo For sure! They invented the game!
@leo We're just apprentices, beating the masters is better!

hullo there
there's an accepted answer which doesn't answer "everything"

A: ntheorem Box over multiple pages with continued hint?

Gonzalo MedinaThis can be easily achieved using either the mdframed or tcolorbox packages. An option using mdframed: \documentclass[]{article} \usepackage[a6paper]{geometry}% just for the example \usepackage{blindtext} \usepackage[framemethod=tikz]{mdframed} \usepackage{ntheorem} \newmdtheoremenv[ ntheor...

I'm using mdframed with tikz - but no "theorems"

@egreg and we perfected it. :)

but too would like to see the title upon page breaks with a "continued" hint

leo
@PauloCereda you added magic :-)

@leo Not with this generation, sadly. :)

3:11 PM
@nuttyaboutnatty Ask a follow-up question

Everytime I see a red box which says 4, I click on it and it says nothing to review.

John Cleese: We basically hate the French. So I say, if we have to fight someone, let's fight the French. :)

leo
@PauloCereda still, Neymar tries

@egreg ok

@percusse We have the fastest reviewers in the West
5

3:12 PM
@leo Indeed. :)
@egreg John Waynes of TeX. :)
Wow, 5th World Cup for Buffon!

@egreg Somehow, they are mostly the ugly next to Good and Bad :)

@percusse I see what you did there. :)

@percusse This reminds me this answer of mine:
8
A: How could I do big intersection with single $s?

egregThe "canonical" way to get the limit under the operator, in this case \bigcap, is to use \limits: $\bigcap\limits_{n} J_{n}$ This has a drawback, though. Consider the following example, where the definitions of \1, \2 and \3 are just to make up some text around the symbol. Note that the first ...

@egreg: if Italy wins today, England still has a chance. :)
@David: does that mean you will support Italy in today's game? :)

@PauloCereda Don't say it too loudly.

3:15 PM
@egreg Let's cheer up David. :)

@egreg Heheh. You should have lined them up in a reversed triangle formation :P

@PauloCereda Apparently it Scorchio! for the match

@JosephWright I had to look up that one. :)

when I make a lettrine the second lettre will be uppecase why ?

3:19 PM
@JosephWright ooh!

for example if write this : "Hello all" and H is a lettrine , so the lettre e will be E
:(
how I can resolve it

leo
@egreg I'm taking an English conversation course. We learning comparatives, superlatives and stuff like that. This was in the practice yesterday:

@leo I like the examples

@fahdijbeli \lettrine{I}{}t was a dark and stormy night

leo

3:26 PM
@leo That's of course true. ;-)

@leo I always love the German word langweiliger: in English we only have 'more boring' rather than 'boringer' :-)
@egreg Aye

@PauloCereda not sure: I have a financial stake in Uruguay....

@egreg We once went to a see festival for tall ships: every other crew seemed to be hard at work, the Italian boat crew were all standing with shades on looking nice

@JosephWright :)

@JosephWright That's how we actually work.

3:28 PM
@egreg thanks but I use Lyx then I don't use code just user GUI :(

More or less sums it up

@fahdijbeli Sorry; my usual advice is “trash LyX and type like a real man”. ;-)

@JosephWright British version of Liberace? :)

@JosephWright Still have all the episodes, funniest series ever :-)

@egreg lol you have reason but I m writing my intership book and I haven't enough time to learn the code :(
so this why I use Lyx

leo
3:34 PM
@egreg I think my teacher likes Italian men
@JosephWright and that's for "more boring"?

Q: How to add "continued from previous page" hint to page breaking **mdframed**?

nutty about nattyFollow-up question to this answer of ntheorem Box over multiple pages with continued hint?: I'm using mdframed with tikz - but no "theorems", but too would like to see the title upon page breaks with a "continued" hint. How? MWE: \documentclass[a4paper]{article} \usepackage{graphicx} % \use...

@leo Yup: langweilig = boring

leo
@JosephWright I see, you are English right?

Sorry I'm too hyped about installing matlab again but it's really funny

leo
something that bothers me is that teachers here assume we learn English to talk to Americans
I like they way English talk

3:38 PM
@leo Yup

leo
It's easier to understand

@leo :-)
@leo I'm from close enough to the Home Counties to have a not-too-bad accent: not quite Received Pronunciation but close-ish

leo
Once we were talking about sports. I said something about football, my teacher corrected me, "you should say soccer" SOCCER!!!
that's horrible

@JosephWright not like those people from the far north in Nottinghamshire, you mean?

leo
@JosephWright I see :)

3:42 PM
@DavidCarlisle Well you are in the right place for RP

@JosephWright yes but I'm town not gown

@DavidCarlisle My boss's wife went to a private school in London: she really does have a spot-on accent
@DavidCarlisle Gown wouldn't be RP either, though: too posh
@DavidCarlisle Certainly not in Another Place

@JosephWright my wife comes from the other place I still have basically a Nottingham accent filtered through 20 years in Manchester. M can do long or short vowels to order:-)

@DavidCarlisle :-)

@JosephWright allocation mail ...

3:52 PM
@DavidCarlisle Yes?

@JosephWright reading it:-)

leo
@egreg oh well, I wish you bad luck ;-)

@leo The same! :-)

leo
ha ha ha
see you :-)

@leo How do you say? “El Costa Rica” or “La Costa Rica”?

4:04 PM
@egreg None?

leo
4:21 PM
@egreg La Costa Rica
But usually just Costa Rica

4:41 PM
@leo Soccer used to be a British word, but then Americans started using it and the British stopped.
@leo In Australia it's also soccer, for more or less the same reason as in N. America: another sport is also called 'football'.

@AlanMunn I'd go with Association Football :-)
@leo Depends on the people you are talking to

@JosephWright That's the etymology of soccer, in fact.

@AlanMunn Ah

@JosephWright And in fact, distinctly British, because American English does not have the -er shortener. (As in 'rugger', 'footer' etc.)

@AlanMunn Didn't know that

4:45 PM
OOPS

leo
It was penalty
Now it's goal

@leo UK commentary certainly agrees

@leo Perhaps. We're doing too many errors.

@egreg Yup
@egreg England are not only going to go out, they are going to get thrashed by Costa Rica

@egreg: David is probably sad right now.

4:57 PM
@PauloCereda I'm a bit sad, too. ;-)

@egreg Me too. :)
@egreg: Cassano in the team. You know that Motta is Brazilian? :)

@PauloCereda I know. And it's clear why he has never been chosen for the Seleção. ;-)

@egreg LOL indeed. :)

leo
Pirlo
...
Phew!

5:45 PM
We deserve to go out. :(

Hello everybody!

Does anybody know if there are free repositories / latex documents?
I would like to find out which symbols are used how often.

@egreg There is still time.

@PauloCereda But no play.

@DavidCarlisle Is there a way to get all source files from axiv.org? I thought there were only generated PDFs?

5:50 PM
@moose Crawler? :)

leo
What's wrong with this referee?

@leo Let's say I've seen better ones.

@moose not sure from the public interface but tex source is there but I know there have been work to use that for tex to html/mathml conversion tests, so perhaps if you ask and its for research purposes they may give you back door access. No idea:-)

@leo He doesn't want to decide.

@PauloCereda Yes, of course that works. I just hoped there would be something like a Git repository / a gzip archive of the TeX files to download.

5:52 PM
@moose You could try to contact them.

@egreg oops

@DavidCarlisle Indeed.

leo
Hello world! We are Costa Rica!

@DavidCarlisle Ok, thank you. The TeX sources seem to be there sometimes (e.g. arxiv.org/format/1406.5173v1)

@egreg just got in and saw last 5min:-) sounds like you didn't try too hard to keep England n
@leo :-)

5:55 PM
@leo Congratulations: Costa Rica played much better.

leo
@egreg in the positive side, this is the greatest moment in the history of Central American football. And thank you :-)

@PauloCereda I just saw that they want people to write crawlers for arxive.org. But they offer bulk download (see: arxiv.org/help/bulk_data)

leo
@moose in arxiv you can download the preprints. Near the download options there's PS, PDF and there's something: "other formats" maybe there might be the source files

6:38 PM
@leo Yes, there are source files. I've already found that. Thank you though :-) Currently, I'm writing a very basic Python TeX parser to get to know how often different symbols were used. The usage of \newcommand doesn't make that easier ...

6:54 PM
@moose Quite tricky indeed. :(

7:54 PM
I'm about to get a 21.5" LED monitor. Think of a huge blank modal screen featuring vim in normal mode. Pretty cool, isn't it, @DavidCarlisle? :)

@moose That wouldn't help much; for instance, I use to define a \tens macro for \otimes, in order to give it semantics.
