2:10 AM
There's no shorthand in TikZ 3 for setting both source edge style and target edge style (or < and >) at the same time, is there?
6 hours later…
7:47 AM
Joseph Wright has added an event to this room's schedule.
8:27 AM
Q: Browsing BibTeX databases

Blaz SovdatIs there a good software for browsing BibTeX databases? I have a .bib file with roughly 100 entries and it is becoming harder and harder to look up papers to cite. What I would like is something with a graphical interface that lists the entries in a more readable form. (I prefer open source softw...

Must be a dupe, I suspect

Q: Organisation-produced references in JabRef

lvcUsing Jabref and Libreoffice. I have a source that includes spaces and the word 'and' in a single author's name. Jabref parses this according to the usual rules - spaces separate first and last names, 'and' separating multiple authors. I have wrapped the name in an extra set of braces like so: @...

Off-topic? Seems to be about LibreOffice
8:56 AM
@JosephWright Amazon tell me that Joseph is driving a van up the A34 with a delivery for me. I assume it's not you?
9:10 AM
@DavidCarlisle No :-)
@JosephWright the question is: Do we consider JabRef itself "TeX-related", or is it more in the category of helper software, like VIm, for instance?
@tohecz Yes, exactly
@tohecz Seems (from the reply to my comment) that this is a JabRef issue, but without knowing how it interacts with LibreOffice I'm not sure
@JosephWright discuss on meta?
@tohecz Yup
@tohecz Looking at jabref.sourceforge.net/OOPlugin-jabref.php, it doesn't look like the 'link' uses a TeX system at all
1 hour later…
10:18 AM
@JosephWright It doesn't seem to be exactly a dupe. However, I'm for the idea of improving the existing list questions, rather than creating a new one
@tohecz OK
10:44 AM
Some "helpful" person seems to be engaging in some sort of campaign to vote systematically but indiscriminately on questions I have asked or answered in the past. Is there any way that can be stopped (beyond waiting for the system to identify the abuse and roll it back)?
@PaulStanley Ask @JosephWright . However, as long as it's upvotes, it's only disturbing, but it doesn't affect anything. They simply get reversed the second day
@PaulStanley No: only staff can see or influence votes
@PaulStanley I may be able to identify the source, but even then can't say anything about this in public!
11:25 AM
@Paul: now that you mentioned it, I suspect I also was victim of a serial upvoting. Some old answers of mine got upvoted.
@PauloCereda your robots gone awol?
@David: :)
Back to some sleep in the bus. São Paulo is close now. :)
11:53 AM
@JosephWright Well, I don't really mind about it, but I thought you should know it was happening.
12:29 PM
Urgent help needed
I'm getting this error when including a pdf with \includepdf
Package keyval Error: 75 undefined

Silly me
Nothing to see here, move along
12:52 PM
@Argo lol :)
3 hours later…
3:23 PM
@DavidCarlisle Anything else outstanding on the L2e release?
3:42 PM
@Mico Maybe it's better to move this to the chat.
You are right, Optima is even more difficult to combine than any odd sans-serif ;) It looks like a serif but without the serifs. Amazingly, Iwona has just the same characteristics. If you compare tug.dk/FontCatalogue/iwona and tug.dk/FontCatalogue/optima, the two are really close.
@JosephWright Frank was looking at last few gnats entry on his list, ltnews21 could probably do with a proof read. I'm not sure if we are going to make a private test for a few days like we used to or if we will rely on the tl2014 pretesters
Palatino would stand out much more I guess.
@DavidCarlisle OK, I'll read the news :-)
@Mico Also, I'm a bit concerned how long it would take to get all the details right. I mean there are a lot of fonts used in a document once you get down to the individual character level:
I really wish there was a way to just keep all the Type 1 goodness from the pdflatex version of a document and then switch to OTF on a case by case basis for lualatex.
4:02 PM
@DavidCarlisle Have double-checked tests: all seem to pass. See SVN checkin for typos in news!
4:18 PM
@JosephWright thanks
@JosephWright could you email me a windows made grfguide.pdf I'd be interested to see how that ended up working (since in my mental model it would fail:-)
@DavidCarlisle Running the typesetting now :-)
@JosephWright "wirk" sigh:-(
4:42 PM
@JosephWright thanks. got it. Interesting, my code works better than I expected:-)
Is this chat kinda "jiggling" for anybody else than me BTW?
@Christian ?
Like, bouncing up and down by a pixel or two about once a second.
down and up to be precise
and it's only the main chat area, not the sidebar or the part where I'm writing
and yes, I checked my monitor cable about a hundred times before I realized it was a software problem ;)
@Christian not here (using firefox 31)
5:33 PM
@DavidCarlisle Sorry, got distracted. No, I only see it in Chromium, too. Tried Firefox and Opera and both seem fine.
@Christian well after Chrome have fixed their MathML support, maybe they'll fix that...
@DavidCarlisle Hehe.
What was wrong with their MathML? I've been using it on Wikipedia for quite a while and it always looked fine.
It's awfully slow but so is Firefox's.
@Christian They removed it in chrome 24: there is no mathml support (so it uses a gazillion lines of mathjax javascript instead) (wikipedia uses mathjax for all I think to make things consistent)
@DavidCarlisle Oh you're right of course. I was thinking of MathJax.
I didn't even know there was a browser that supported MathML at all. When I was still using Firefox, I visited MathML test pages every now and then and it always looked like a bomb went off in a letter case.
@Christian firefox has had native mathml since before it was called firefox
5:42 PM
@DavidCarlisle Well I guess those test pages were asking too much then.
@Christian firefox has pretty full support for presentation mathml2, with some mathml3 features It doesn't support content mathml without an addon. test pages may have been wrong (wouldn't be the first time:-)
@DavidCarlisle That's entirely possible. If anything can get me the same maths capabilities as MathJax without taking half a minute to render a maths-heavy Wikipedia page, I'm happy.
@Christian the google folks said everyone was happy with a javascript implementation math and they didn't want to support it so they pulled the webkit implementation (which is in safari) when they forked blink.
5:59 PM
@DavidCarlisle Well, I am happy that I don't have to use ugly PNGs anymore but I'm not happy that it takes an eternity.
@Christian we'll get there in the end, but it's a long slog. For a while at the beginning of 2013 every common browser had (or could have) a native implementation (IE required mathplayer but that's native code) but then google pulled mathml from blink, opera adopted blink and microsoft broke mathplayer. grrrr
@Christian I've only used mathml not pngs since around 2000:-)
Coming back home now. I'll be there ~3.5 hours later. :)
It's very cold right now. <14C.
No cute girls nearby. This is gonna be a long journey. :(
7:06 PM
in beamer when using \AtBeginSection{ ... } to display the currentsection currentsubsection toc, is it possible to block it in order to avoid twice the same slide after the \tableofcontents slide?
good evening :)
@hugovdberg Hello
@JosephWright how's life?
@hugovdberg OK
@hugovdberg I have some expl3 code to get sorted for the TL14 DVD freeze
@JosephWright Freeze was two weeks ago, wasn't it? Or some bug fixes after testing?
7:18 PM
@hugovdberg no tl2013 is frozen; 2014 is in test
@hugovdberg Like @DavidCarlisle said ;-)
@hugovdberg Our deadline is 1st May to give about a week for testing before the final DVD build
@DavidCarlisle ah yes, I see
@hugovdberg The LaTeX2e update is more important, of course ...
@JosephWright which strangely matches the deadline for buying a new car tax disk...
This is quite elegant:
user image
7:21 PM
@DavidCarlisle :-)
@JosephWright putting out a new 2e is cheaper
@Werner the power of latex picture mode?
@DavidCarlisle not having a car at all is probably cheaper :P
@DavidCarlisle Indeed
@hugovdberg Yup
@hugovdberg given that it's 12km to the nearest bus station, it would cost me a lot in shoes, not having a car:-)
7:24 PM
@DavidCarlisle I get to work by train as fast as by car :P
@DavidCarlisle and it takes me about 5 minutes to the train station, and from the other station to work something like 10 minutes by bike
@hugovdberg you don't live in an oxfordshire village: public transport runs to about 2 buses a week.
@DavidCarlisle haha definitely not, from our train station (not even close to the busiest in the netherlands) about 30 trains depart in 4 different directions each hour
@hugovdberg oxfordshire didn't quite notice the 20th century: we don't have pavements or streetlights or buses or trains or a shop:-)
@DavidCarlisle the busiest station is Utrecht Central Station, from which some 150 trains depart per hour, although that's spread over some more directions (I think 10 different main lines)
@hugovdberg yes I lived in Manchester for over 20 years before moving here, where you never really looked at a bus or train timetable for local travel, one just always turned up, it was a bit of a shock when I moved here:-)
7:33 PM
@DavidCarlisle sounds nice, I must admit I love to visit my parents. They live at the edge of a small village, and the pavement just stops at their front door, from there on it's just a dusty track into the woods :) really nice and quiet out there
@DavidCarlisle they're trying to make more trains depart from our station as well, problem is there are too many level crossings at the moment which then would be practically closed all the time :P so there were some complaints after a trial two years ago
but they've been very busy reducing the number of level crossings so there will be new trial soon I think :)
@David: I was hoping to visit you by bike.
@Johannes_B Hi Johannes :)
Hi @hugovdberg
I have been very busy the last few days helping out in a local bakery
@Johannes_B I've been terribly busy myself too :) although last weekend I really had nothing I needed to do for the first time in a month or three, so I spent it very well, in the sun with some nice cold beer ;-)
@hugovdberg Mhh, cold beer.
@hugovdberg Having my »Feierabendbier« as well.
And i think i earned it after almost 12 hours of work
7:49 PM
@Johannes_B lol, just finished a "Wieckse Witte" myself :)
@hugovdberg "Wieckse Witte"? Sounds ... dangerous
@Johannes_B Wieck (well actually it's spelled Wijck, but all those non-Maastrichtians will pronounce it wrong) is a neighbourhood in the center of Maastricht, and Witte means white
@Johannes_B so it's a weizenbier in the dutch/belgian tradition, from my hometown Maastricht :)
@hugovdberg Ah, that doesn't sound at all like "Wicked Witch"
@hugovdberg I am having a Holsten, because »Holsten knallt am dollsten«
@Johannes_B lol, nope :)
@PauloCereda from Brazil? That's a long ride.
8:05 PM
@hugovdberg Stupid elbow, it made my beer fall over :-(
@Johannes_B oh nooo, chop it off :P
@hugovdberg Really?
@Johannes_B nah, makes it so much harder to drink the next beer ;) still too bad about that spilled beer
It is nice when there are just two answers, @egreg and me the better answer gets the tick.
@hugovdberg It's ok, i know how to get more beer ;-)
And it wasn't lost entirely
Thank to all deities
8:24 PM
Oh no, someone starred a post with a spelling mistake
8:38 PM
@Johannes_B perhaps edit it
9:26 PM
@DavidCarlisle I'm happy for the win, so I'll ignore the sarcasm. ;-)
9:49 PM
Finally, home! :)
10:00 PM
@PauloCereda So you couldn't see the match!
10:12 PM
@egreg Oh the match! Who won?
@PauloCereda Sassuolo-Juve 1:3 (Zaza, Tévez, Marchisio, Llorente)
@egreg Yay! Scudetto in the next giornata? :)
@PauloCereda Fingers crossed. :)
@egreg Me too. :)
user image
some reason still laughing :)
10:18 PM
@percusse LOL In order to properly say it, we probably need to say it fast. :)
@percusse How's it in Dutch?
@egreg snelheidslimiet
@percusse No fun! ;-)
@egreg Proper pronunciation of Van Gogh or Huygens is enough :)
@percusse With expulsion of tonsils?
10:26 PM
@egreg and agony and regret
Haaiuuyghghghgens etc. hehe that took me a while to get used to
11:05 PM
@percusse Nice country for an otorhinolaryngologist to live in.
