@Dennis don't use the date at all, unless you need it (same as any other package)

5 hours later…
5:16 AM
Is his arm broken?

4 hours later…
8:59 AM
Oh yeah, running Fedora 20, oh boy! @Paulo

1 hour later…
10:02 AM
@tohecz woohoo!

10:32 AM
@PauloCereda No SP today?

@egreg Nope, thank God. :) Today I'm at home. :)

!!/battle

@egreg oh wait, let me wake up Psmith. :)
!!/battle
@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: The current score is egreg 200 vs. 135 David. So far, egreg is winning.
:)
@egreg: I thought of you during lunch yesterday: I had conchiglioni! :)

@PauloCereda In SP? Ouch!

@egreg It was an Italian restaurant. :) At least, the name was Italian. :P

10:39 AM
@PauloCereda There's a “Japanese restaurant” at the ground floor of my house; it's managed by Chinese.

@egreg Uh-oh. :)
I once went to a Japanese restaurant, it was quite funny the way I had to use the chopsticks. :)
Hey guys, have you watched Disney's Frozen movie already?

1 hour later…
11:47 AM
first time I have flagged someone for giving me a bounty:-)

@DavidCarlisle One for the Powers

@JosephWright If they won't do it I'll just award a bounty to the other answer so it'll come to the same thing

@DavidCarlisle Let me ask first

@JosephWright OK but you can confirm that I don't mind (and @egreg will be delighted) if I lose the +100, if that makes it easier for them to decide to move it.

@DavidCarlisle Of course

11:55 AM
@DavidCarlisle Speaking of unmerited bounties. ;-)

!!/battle

@DavidCarlisle Oh wait.
!!/help
@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: Good morning! I'm Psmith, the friendly TeX bot - the p in my name is silent, as in pshrimp. I'm here as a companion to our fellow users in the typographic land. As you probably noticed, I always reply under Paulo's account, but do not despair, I say, my replies are always preceded by my own name. Enjoy your stay at TeX.sx! If you need any help, just ask our chat residents. Cheerio!
!!/battle
@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: The current score is egreg 0 vs. 255 David. So far, David is winning.
WAT

@PauloCereda excellent

!!/battle
@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: The current score is egreg 215 vs. 255 David. So far, David is winning.
Ah probably some exception on fetching data. :)

@PauloCereda worth a star anyway

12:04 PM
@DavidCarlisle I could edit the text so the starred message would be fixed, but I won't for the sake of being naughty. :)

@PauloCereda I can't remember the last time I had zero daily rep at 1pm. :P

@egreg :) I was worried for a minute, that would mean my votes were reversed! :)

@DavidCarlisle Psmith, the TeX bot: The current score is egreg 215 vs. 255 David. So far, David is winning, but it's like with Red Bull in the last Formula 1 Grand Prix: they cheated.

We need an Aussie. :)

!!/eightball O Great Oracle, will the Powers reestablish the Truth?

12:08 PM
@egreg Psmith, the TeX bot: The great 8-ball says: my sources say no.

:(

@egreg why the sad face, seems reasonable to me.

!!/eightball Did David cheat?
@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: The great 8-ball says: listen to David.
WAT
What's happening with this bot today? :P

@PauloCereda David says "no"

@DavidCarlisle Seems legit. :)

1 hour later…

2:07 PM
Cool, my first "hot network question": tex.stackexchange.com/questions/166141/…

@Dennis some of us haven't managed to ask even a cold question, never mind a hot one:(

Did everyone see the announcement about the Turing Award?
5

@DavidCarlisle Haha, would that I had your problem!

@JosephWright who's he?

@DavidCarlisle :-)
@martinschroder Thanks for heads-up on mailing lists re: Turing Award

2:40 PM
My pleasure. :-)
Can we get a blog post, please?

@MartinSchröder You writing it?

@JosephWright Na. Get @FrankMittelbach to write it - he actually knows him.

@MartinSchröder Ah yes: good plan

@MartinSchröder I forwarded your email to a couple of friends who hate LaTeX. :)
@JosephWright I volunteer to be a backup writer. :)

3:45 PM
@JosephWright I got it by mail from our institute's director :)

@egreg why delete the \url| answer? (I was just about to post the same)

@DavidCarlisle It's not "clickable" as requested and with hyperref the alternative syntax doesn't work.

How should I write out an expression like this: $<$-relation? I'm also interested in how to tie the < to the dash without using a non-breaking space (since I don't want a space). Anyone have a quick suggestion?

@egreg isn't it, well I never, learn something new every day:-)

@Dennis $<$\nobreakdash-relation (with amsmath)

4:00 PM
@Dennis I'd avoid the dash but $<$\nolinebreak-relation
@egreg is that same as mine?

Thanks @egreg (and David)!

@DavidCarlisle No, look closely. ;-)

@egreg at the input or output? (I didn't try running it:-)

@DavidCarlisle There's a feasible line break after - with your code; not with mine.

@DavidCarlisle Everytime I hear well I never, it reminds of this: youtube.com/watch?v=bxRsj9lHKW4 :)

4:03 PM
Ah, good to know about the difference. egreg's is the way to go for my purposes then.

@Dennis he claims there is a bug in my code, can't be true:-)

@egreg Would this be equivalent to yours? $<$\nolinebreak-\nolinebreakrelation
@DavidCarlisle Heaven forbid!

@DavidCarlisle Preposterous. :)

@Dennis There's no need to add \nolinebreak after $<$, no line break is possible there.

@Dennis Nope you need $<$\hbox{-}relation (which is more or less what the ams command is doing)

4:10 PM
@DavidCarlisle Ah ok, nice.

4:22 PM
@JosephWright do you know if I get to keep those bounties are are they going to be moved?

@DavidCarlisle No idea

@JosephWright OK I'll leave it a bit, then if I remember and I still have them I'll pass them on in a day or so.

4:34 PM
@David: speaking of bounties, do you plan answering my question about semi-automatic layout? :)

I'll be intrigued to see the OP's solution to
1
Q: Expandable, standard TeX only way to compare balanced token lists

alexshIs there a (reasonably) efficient macro that does something similar to \long\def\comparets#1#2{\def\aa{#1}\def\bb{#2}\ifx\aa\bb true\else false\fi} except is expandable (i.e. \newcomparets{<tokens1>}{<tokens2>} would expand into either 'true' or 'false', including inside \edef)? I am looking for...

which is implied in the comments

@JosephWright bet it doesn't work:-)

@DavidCarlisle If David K can't come up with a working solution, I suspect no-one can!
@DavidCarlisle I quickly checked how Bruno arranged to do the 'token by token' stuff in \tl_expandable_lowercase:n. As I suspected, it needs \pdfstrcmp under the hood.

5:05 PM
@PauloCereda perhaps but if you need the answer any time soon don't rely on me:-) I thought I might do something at weekend but we ended up spending two full days in Birmingham:-) the lego cube solver got faster than last year: (don't blink:-)

@DavidCarlisle ooh! :)
Bah a Samsung Galaxy. :P

@JosephWright not sure it is a good plan ... still have the task to turn my float answer into an article

@Frank: Hi Frank! I didn't forget my debt with you. Later on today, I promise. :)

@PauloCereda the four sides have lego EV3 blocks running linux:-)

@DavidCarlisle ooh now I like. :)

5:08 PM
but there is a really nice paper that Chris gave for Leslie's 60th birthday (I think) time to recover that in my opinion
@PauloCereda ok :-)

@FrankMittelbach There's even L3 news!
Not xor though. :) /pokes @Joseph and @David

@PauloCereda meaning?

@FrankMittelbach shhh it's a secret. :)

@PauloCereda that is really something I should do, given that I have written most of the prototype

@FrankMittelbach Nah David should tackle it. :)

5:16 PM
@PauloCereda sure, good approach - get him off answering 2e questions - pose L3 xor questions instead

@FrankMittelbach get him off building Visual Studio Context sensitive help:-)

@DavidCarlisle Oh no!

@DavidCarlisle whatever it takes David

@FrankMittelbach Lego, mostly.

@PauloCereda Frank's seen my house:-)

5:19 PM
@PauloCereda now that's ok ... I can relate to that and I know what is in David's living room

@DavidCarlisle :)

@DavidCarlisle I should try to pop in some time: you are not far from 'base camp'

@DavidCarlisle indeed ... crawled through it :-)

@FrankMittelbach A parrot in a cage? :)
@JosephWright bring tea? :)
I'm desperately trying to publish in Europe, so I can visit you guys. :)

@JosephWright yes bring your clarinet and you can play clarinet with M while I play with the lego
2

5:21 PM
@PauloCereda more like a lego city
@DavidCarlisle you play clarinet @JosephWright?

@DavidCarlisle Tell uncle J to bring his PS3.

@FrankMittelbach Yes, when I have time

@FrankMittelbach ooh!

@JosephWright what kind of music?

@FrankMittelbach Classical

5:25 PM
@JosephWright damn :-)

@FrankMittelbach No jazz/blues. :)

@PauloCereda well I currently try myself on the Bach cello suites but this isn't really serious

@FrankMittelbach :)

@PauloCereda Installing [0109/2805, time/total: 10:24/03:41:07]: arara [4985k] :)

@tohecz awwwwww <3
It's a trojan. :)

5:39 PM
@PauloCereda well I don't use it :P

@tohecz Neither do I. :)

6:07 PM
Hi everybody.
I'm considering give up Emacs+AUCTeX as my main LaTeX editor in favor of Texmaker. Somehow, I have the feeling that the flexibility of Emacs does not worth to bear its non-standard behaviors (only one example : the copy/paste problem). I was wondering if I am the only one to want to quit Emacs after years of use ?

@ppr well, I quit vim for LaTeX in favour of texworks circa 2 years ago

ppr
@tohecz it sounds quite similar. Are you satisfied by Texworks or are there still some tools/flexibility from vim which is missing in Texworks?

@ppr I like texworks PDF viewer. The one of texmaker is better, but generally texmaker is simply odd to me, I prefer the simplistic design of texworks. I miss some features of vim, but I use them much less than the smooth switching tex<->pdf and the full SyncTeX support.

ppr
@tohecz Thansk. I guess I'm in the same situation. I will try Texworks before switching to texmaker.

@ppr I dunno. It depends on whether you like to have lots of toolbars: in that case texmaker is better, otherwise its complex layout would be a burden I think.

ppr
6:21 PM
@tohecz Is Texworks actively maintained ? One problem of Texmaker in my opinion is there is only one developper (afaik) who is very active for now (but who knows in 3-4 years...)

@ppr AFAIK texworks is TUG-maintained, but I could be wrong. @Joseph might know better

@ppr One main developer on TeXworks, but there are a couple of others as well
@ppr Many projects are the same: MiKTeX, WinEdt, ...

Gotta love my Perl book. ^^ :)

ppr
@tohecz What about keyboards shortcuts ? i always try to reproduce Emacs+auctex shortcuts when I use another editor (it's likely not a good way to test it but I need strong shortcuts support). Is texworks handle shortcuts well ?

@ppr texworks is probably quite poor on customizable shortcuts, I have no strong experience with texmaker

ppr
6:29 PM
@tohecz thanks for your output/advises

Why do we have a blog entry from other sites in our community bulletin???!!??!!

@PauloCereda From 'Higher Up'

@JosephWright Can we disable? :)

@ppr Like most GUI applications, the standard key bindings are rather different to Emacs or other command line tools

ppr
@JosephWright The opposite would surprise me. But is it possible to change the shortcuts ? (in Texmaker, it possible to change already present shortcuts but not to create new ones)

6:36 PM
> All the shortcuts can be redefined either to create new shortcuts or to modify the existing ones to match personal uses or change shortcuts not adapted to one particular keyboard layout. The list of possible actions to associate with shortcuts is given after the predefined shortcuts.
(from the manual)
Depends on the action being known to TeXworks: there is a long-ish list

ppr
@JosephWright Thanks. Do you use Texworks also?

@PauloCereda Jacobson's Basic Algebra I and II! I love you!

@egreg awwww <3 I couldn't live without them. :)

@PauloCereda Basic Algebra I was the textbook we used at our first year Algebra course.

@egreg Really? That's awesome! :) I like this book a lot.

6:48 PM
@PauloCereda Some years later the teachers switched to Herstein's book, because there was an Italian translation. But the two are not even comparable. Jacobson is a model of clarity in the exposition.
@PauloCereda Have I already told the story about Herstein's book and Oxford's algebra professor Tony Corner?
@PauloCereda “Do you know that Herstein's book was translated into Italian?" said my supervisor to Tony Corner. "Nice to hear!” said he, "Unfortunately it hasn't yet been translated into English.”

@egreg Oh my! :)
@egreg Jacobson is by far the best algebra book I've ever seen, but no course in here uses it. It's a shame. :(

@PauloCereda Group theorists don't like it, because groups are not really a topic in the book. But you can even find Tarski's theorem on systems of equations and inequalities, Sturm sequences, the Möbius map, and so on. Just in volume 1.
Almost no advanced linear algebra, though.

7:03 PM
@egreg :)
@egreg I wouldn't be able to follow anyway. :)

7:19 PM
Jacobson's textbooks are pretty good.
I used to learn algebra from them too.

@ppr Yes: been a fan since early on in development

7:52 PM
Good day, everyone. If you have a free minute, please look at my answer, where a little question arose: tex.stackexchange.com/a/166333/10995

@HenriMenke have you tried using \hat{\phantom{#1}\mathllap{\slashed{#1}} ? Sorry, my TeXlive is now at 1740/2805 install progress so I can't test it

@tohecz It works! Many thanks!
Good luck with your installation :-)

8:15 PM
@HenriMenke so far so good. And you're welcome of course

@tohecz @HenriMenke Hi guys, nice to see you.
Do you have any clue on latex-community.org/forum/…?

@Johannes_B hi

@tohecz Installation proceeding?

@Johannes_B slowly, but proceeding :)
I have only 2Mb download speed currently

@tohecz At home or the institute?

8:26 PM
@Johannes_B at home

@tohecz Better downloaded and installed it at work ;-)

I should have LTE 40Mb (real speed ~27Mb), but the 4G dongle doesn't work with my Raspberry Pi, so I'm on 3G

@tohecz Hang in there

@Johannes_B ?

@FrankMittelbach seems to be around pretty often now. Sadly i am never here when he is.
@tohecz Done, it will be soon.

8:30 PM
@Johannes_B I lost you completely I think

@Johannes_B so who hides behind Johannes_ ?

@FrankMittelbach Knuth himself, I think. :)

@tohecz Your installation will be finished. Hang in there till its done :-)
@FrankMittelbach @PauloCereda No, i am not the choosen one. Just a simple Texie

@Johannes_B ah this. Yes, 40 minutes to go

@Johannes_B Young padawan, do you know David's middle name? :)

8:35 PM
@PauloCereda Oh my, there is a Jedipedia. Had to look up Padawan.

@Johannes_B Oopsie. :)

texdoc longtable No middle name given :-(

@Johannes_B It's not an easy task. :)
@Johannes_B: another trivia: Frank plays the bass. How many basses does Frank have? :)

@PauloCereda Oh, what have i gotten into?

@Johannes_B I have no idea. :P

8:40 PM
@PauloCereda he plays the (double) bass?!

@tohecz he does play! :)

@PauloCereda WOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWW @Frank!
btw, you know what would be cool-super-confusing? If someone's middle name was actually just one letter :p

@tohecz LOL

@tohecz Homer J Simpson

It reminds me of Homer trying to figure out what was the meaning of his middle name J. - Homer J. Simpson. It was "Homer Jay Simpson". :P
@Johannes_B oh that! :)

8:43 PM
@PauloCereda :-)

I'd like to see someone along the name of Little Bobby Tables. :P

@PauloCereda @tohecz @FrankMittelbach Need to recharge my batteries, literally and figuratively. See you soon

@Johannes_B laters!

Have a nive eve

@PauloCereda you gotta love that it's his mom not his dad! :)

8:51 PM
@PauloCereda @tohecz @Johannes_B nice one, depends on how you count ... owned by me 4 at the moment ... in the house 6 - and no, no double bass, that is only played by my son

@FrankMittelbach nice :) I own only one piano (another one is at my parents'), one guitar, a kazoo and two pairs of castanets :)
Expatriates.SE has got Public Beta!

9:09 PM
@tohecz going into instrument counting contest? in that case i could offer a few dozen more, only I may not be able to play most of them, at least not properly

@FrankMittelbach no, it's more like that I have only few, compared to you :(

9:35 PM
@Frank: do you have any gaming devices? :)

@tohecz I own a cello and have been lending one while waiting for my electric cello to arrive :) and I have an electronic keyboard that half the time acts as an extension of my desk to park less important heaps of work :P

@hugovdberg my piano is electronic, too, but it's certainly a piano and not a keyboard :)

@Johannes_B Wow, some speak people bad very english, this make but I cannot of anything :P
@tohecz yeah, I'm still hoping to buy an electric piano anytime soon, 61 keys is just too few to play most piano works (especially on the low end) :(

@hugovdberg well, that's only a small part of the problem. The true hammers and HQ sound being the others

@tohecz oh yes that's maybe even more important, but not having the keys at all is the biggest issue at the moment ;)

9:46 PM
@egreg this one was probably a bit hard for you, but I managed it vvv
2
A: Small indentation after labelled subequations

David Carlisle \label{eq}% you need a percent here

@hugovdberg however, I'd recommend you to concentrate on the sound and hammer quality, because rarely a <88 key piano is good anyways

@tohecz You mean the keyboard app on my samsung tablet isn't the real thing? I've been conned!

@tohecz Oh yes, when buying a new one I will look at more than just the keys, I'll definitely listen to it very hard, the static noise on this one is reaally bad ;)

@DavidCarlisle well, I've seen people practicing on a 103-key PC keyboard

@DavidCarlisle With the wrong solution. :P

9:51 PM
@egreg a tick for you to steal?

@DavidCarlisle Let me try

@tohecz I've played on a Kawai MP10 once, I did really like that :)

@DavidCarlisle Answered; it wasn't a missing %. Too easy, otherwise. :P

@egreg well my % works:-)

10:09 PM
@hugovdberg I've got a Yamaha CP50, and I love it

Helloo,
I have an IEEE trans document. I have figures that I cite them inside the paragraphes.
but when I cite the figures it write "f" the first letter of figure in small letter even if it is the begining of the sentence.
How I capitalize it?

@barznjy do you use cleveref?

@tohecz I am not sure about that. probably not.

@barznjy so how do you write the reference?

10:27 PM
@tohecz based of what you mentioned, I searched in google, I just found this site it is very usefull, http://www.howtotex.com/packages/automatic-clever-references-with-cleveref/

before I used this :
\figref{fig10} shows the .....
I changed to this:
\Figref{fig10} shows the .....
and the problem solved.
Thanks

@barznjy sorry I'm downloading some gigabytes of software, so my connection is lagged quite

@tohecz I assume you are engineer. as they always download softwares just to have it .

@tohecz CP50 is nice as well yeah

@tohecz Thanks good night.

@barznjy if I'm not mistaken this time it isn't 'just to have it' but to make things work, isn't it? :P
@barznjy good night to you as well :)

10:54 PM
@hugovdberg @barznjy Quite right, I've got a new laptop. But you're right, I'm an engineer ... in theoretical mathematics :)

@Johannes_B Looks like he wants \frenchspacing

11:22 PM
damn, just broke an xbox 360 controller.. not sure whether to be proud to actually succeed in doing that or sad I have only one left now.. :P

11:32 PM
ah well, good reason to quit gaming and go to bed ;) good night everyone!
