A: naive dictionary datastructure using \csname ... \endcsname; problem with nesting

egregYou have several unprotected end of lines, which count as spaces. Some of those I added are not really relevant, but it's good practice to add them. \def\newdict #1{% \expandafter\edef\csname #1 \endcsname{#1}% \expandafter\def\csname #1.set \endcsname##1##2{% <-- Important \expandafter\...

@DavidCarlisle You should appreciate it.

@egreg @David will go to bed after this ;)

5 hours later…
5:31 AM
I just discovered \@afterheading and it's perfect for me (I am putting a mdframed box which should act as a heading) however, I notice that it only forces 1 line to be on the same page as the heading, rather than the usual 2. Why might this happen?

1 hour later…
6:40 AM
@jtbandes The rule is usually not to force two lines to be on the same page as the heading, only the first line is guaranteed. But LaTeX usually tries to keep the first two lines of a paragraph together. So what you observe could be that the first two lines are not part of a common paragraph or this is a seldom case where it is preferable to break off the first line of a paragraph (widow).

@StephanLehmke I was able to avoid the problem by adding some more rubber spaces/flexibility (with plus and minus) elsewhere

2 hours later…

Hi folks, I read a geometry book, I have a question about the book as follows.

8:36 AM
Completely,
The both conventions seem new to me.

8:54 AM
You just wrote it, so obviously you can.

@egreg Re chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/11364273#11364273, how important is the ability to do a rescan for making regexpatch workable? My guess is 'very', but I'd like to check.

@JosephWright Essential.

@egreg OK, was my guess
@egreg \scantokens turns out to be a primitive that is very difficult to use correctly

@JosephWright I need to reconstruct the control sequence from \token_get_arg_spec:N and similar functions

@egreg Right
@egreg Reason for asking is that I've prodded the rest of the team on this, and have finally got some feedback, so I want to be sure of my facts for getting stuff sorted out

9:08 AM
@JosephWright In my experience \tl_set_rescan:Nnn works quite well (once you realize its small quirks).

@egreg Fine: not going anywhere since people do rely on it
> Trailing spaces at the end of the \meta{tokens} are discarded in the rescanning process.
@egreg Does that text make sense?

@JosephWright It's what happens.

@egreg Yes :-)
Checked in, plus an additional bit of text about the 'setup' argument

@JosephWright Some changes in the outer interface or just in the documentation?

@egreg Documentation

9:23 AM
Hello! So instead of making good design changes, another change today to worse? Gotta love SE :)

@CodeMocker It's a matter of conventions. Since Hilbert it has been preferred to say "congruent" rather than "equal". I would never use "equal in measure" as a substitute for "congruent": measuring angles is a consequence of the axioms on congruence of angles.

@egreg: we sold a defender to Napoli today. :)

@egreg well, we write |\angle ABC| = |\angle DEF|, and we say "equal in size" in Czech

10:18 AM
@Speravir Thanks for trying it out.
@HarishKumar Thanks.

@tohecz Of course, I know, he is the renowned expert at answering tikz questions (with picture mode, if you are not aware of it! /sarcasm :-))

@tohecz I've got a silver badge, I must be an expert

11:39 AM
@PauloCereda I read it. Is he good?

11:54 AM
@egreg I like him, but he had some bad experiences abroad. He was originally from Palmeiras, then he was transferred to Barcelona, then back to us, and now to Napoli.
I think he really needs to improve his timing. :(

@DavidCarlisle: ^^ Now Heiko is a TikZ expert too, beware. :)
@egreg: by the way, did you like my mention to the optimization box aka the EG box in my email in the L3 list? :)

12:07 PM
@PauloCereda :)

12:24 PM
@egreg OK. Thanks.

@PauloCereda He's only got a bronze badge, hardly counts, just a beginner, not an expert like @egreg and me.

@DavidCarlisle Ah indeed. :)

@DavidCarlisle Yes, but we can create a new room just for PSmith. :-)

!!/answer why is the sky blue

Psmith, the TeX bot, in fixed font mode:

Why is the sky blue?
The sky's blue color is a result of the effect of Rayleigh scattering. Shorter-wavelength blue light is more strongly scattered in the earth's atmosphere than longer-wavelength red light; the human eye perceives the color blue when looking at the sky as a result.

@DavidCarlisle Interesting!

@CodeMocker more interesting than solving linear equations:-)

Anyone home? I've tried probably four or five times in the last siz months to get Hebrew working with my windows installation of windowslive + texmaker, with no luck. It's uber frustrating to say the least. I've read every question and answer on this site and everyone seems to have the same issues and I still can't find a single coherent answer or step-by-step guide to an easy installation. I don't want to open a too-specific question, but I can't seem to find a single guide on installing fonts.

@bjorne I'm afraid there are few (if any) experts in Hebrew around the site. :(

In any case, I'll paste my problem just in case. I'm trying to compile xelatex + polyglossia, which I have installed, and can't compile anything because either "The current roman font does not contain the Hebrew" or "fontspec error: "font-not-found" The font "David CLM" cannot be found."

@egreg I think I can ask a friend to take a look. :)

@bjorne Ah, we might be able to help with this part

Every MWE that I try has a similar error. I don't even mind what font it is, I'm just trying to get something to compile..
As an aside, I've tried sharelatex and similar online sites that have hebrew mwe's in their help docs, and they don't even compile. That can't be my fault because it's their installation and their documentation (and I didn't make any mistakes in the copy-pasting) and it still doesn't work.

4:01 PM
@bjorne Could you paste any M(n)WE you have tried?

I'll paste 2:
\documentclass{article} % Compile with xelatex
\usepackage{polyglossia}
\setmainlanguage{hebrew}
\setotherlanguage{english}
\newfontfamily\hebrewfont{David CLM}
\begin{document}
\setLTR
The following should be mono-spaced, but isn't: \texttt{This should be mono-spaced.}
\end{document}
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage[utf8x]{inputenc}
\usepackage[hebrew,english]{babel}

\begin{document}
\selectlanguage{hebrew}
שלום, עולם.
\end{document}
The second one was before I began polyglossia
And from what I read, that's the direction multilingual tex is taking (although I really have no idea), so I suppose that's the one I would prefer to focus on
I.e. the first example is more important.

@bjorne this one is declaring the font but not using it? (I don't have that font either) what operating system are you on (there must be a system font that covers Hebrew)

It looks that way, but that's because you have to declare a font (otherwise you get the first error I posted). I'm on windows (otherwise this would be much easier I think)
There are standard fonts, for example David, Miriam, but replacing that font declaration with those names produces the same error

@bjorne Did you read @ulrike's comment in the question you linked to about it being hard to find fonts with the appropriate OpenType set up?
I think she used Ezra SIL and DejaVu Sans for a reason

\documentclass{article} % Compile with xelatex
\usepackage{polyglossia}
\setmainlanguage{hebrew}
\setotherlanguage{english}
\newfontfamily\hebrewfont{David CLM}
\newfontfamily\hebrewfonttt{Latin Modern Mono} % avoid a spurious message
\begin{document}

\begin{otherlanguage*}{english}\setLTR
The following should be mono-spaced, but isn't: \texttt{This should be mono-spaced.}
\end{otherlanguage*}

שלום, עולם.

\end{document}

4:10 PM
This code works for me:
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{polyglossia}
\setmainlanguage{hebrew}
\newfontfamily\hebrewfont{Taamey David CLM}

\begin{document}
שלום, עולם.
\end{document}

@egreg: I think we all should blame David because of the font name. :)

@PauloCereda, I get "fontspec error: "font-not-found"! The font "Taamey David CLM" cannot be found."

@bjorne Have you got it installed?
@bjorne Have you tried using the font file name (more reliable than using the 'friendly' name)?

@bjorne Ah I didn't have David CLM so I googled and found this one: culmus.sourceforge.net/taamim

4:12 PM
That's what I asked originally: I don't know how to install fonts.

@bjorne Just like you'd do for using the font with LibreOffice or similar software.

@bjorne Standard Windows font install: download and add to Fonts folder in Control Panel

I'll try, give me a minute

@egreg Gotta love the way you didn't mention the cursed W word. :)

I mean, like I said, I already have system fonts like David and Miriam installed, and they don't work, but I'll try anyway

4:16 PM
@bjorne this works for me on windows:
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{polyglossia}
\setmainlanguage{hebrew}
\newfontfamily\hebrewfont{David}

\begin{document}
שלום, עולם.
\end{document}
I think I should use that font for all my answers

@DavidCarlisle, wow, that's great. It finally worked for me. Fantastic! I wonder why nothing else did...
Thanks again all. Just for the sake of completeness, does the tex font system in general use its own repository of fonts, or does it check the system fonts, or both (or does it differ between implementations)? I'm wondering because I have found some mf Hebrew font files from my university but didn't know how to install them (maybe they're only babel related), but now am wondering if it's sufficient just to install regular system fonts.

@DavidCarlisle As always, David is the solution. :)
@egreg: ^^ :P

hi
I know there is a page to get the bibtex from the name of the book

@DominicMichaelis Привет!

@DominicMichaelis MathSciNet

4:30 PM
@egreg thanks

@bjorne that is the big difference between xelatex/luatex and classic tex, xelatex and luatex can read ttf and otf fonts and extract them from the system font setup. classic tex uses its own fonts in its own format

Mmm, ok. Thanks again! All the best (until next time)!

Er, guys... I think I broke @ClaudioFiandrino's code:

@egreg Oh my bad luck, it isn't up to date :/

is it possible to also calculate/display the minima/maxima of a plotted function
?

@tohecz I'm of those TCS idiots around. :)

@PauloCereda you know what is "Abelian"?
For example (N,+) is an Abelian semigroup

6:42 PM
@tohecz Yep. :)
@tohecz aaaah now I'm remembering things. Horrible things from the past. :)

@PauloCereda hence Abelian semi-grape
and grapes have the colour of lavender

@PauloCereda ? You mean Mit pgf/TikZ ist alles möglich?

@cgnieder Actually it's a silly question: how do I say little cow? :)

@PauloCereda well, the nickname for beer in Czechia is "liquid bread"

@PauloCereda kleine Kuh for a little cow. Kalb for a calf

6:59 PM
@tohecz I wanna be Czech. <3

@PauloCereda Sieben Bier sind auch ein Steak ;)

@PauloCereda :)
@PauloCereda no, in Germany you want some hirchgulash, for a steak, come to France

@PauloCereda about 300 km

@tohecz Oh my!
@cgnieder One hour drive for Marco. :)
I'm targeting a conference which will take place in this city. If my paper gets approved, there I go to Germany! :)

7:03 PM
@PauloCereda kool

@PauloCereda just a saying.. Me and my colleagues used to turned it around: sieben Steaks sind auch ein Bier

@tohecz I'll visit you guys. :)

@PauloCereda lol
@PauloCereda cool!

which meeting is it?

7:05 PM
@tohecz Conference?

@PauloCereda Gießen. Near Frankfurt.

@PauloCereda yep, which one?

@egreg Ah cool. :)
Justus Liebig University Giessen - for one moment, I read Justin Bieber University.

@PauloCereda you work in automata theory?

@tohecz among other things. :)

7:08 PM
I see Juhani Karhumäki in the program comittee, he's a nice funny guy, I like him :)

@tohecz Cool! :) I don't know any of them. :(

@PauloCereda Justus Liebig, the inventor of the bouilllon cube!

@egreg OMG

@PauloCereda and Galina Jiraskova is I think even funnier :) It's just strange that there's is an automata conference with nobody French in the program comittee ... maybe some hatred? :) /correction, there're 3 French people there

@tohecz No Brazilians either. :)

@tohecz Cool!
@egreg: do they have any special dishes in Gießen? :)

@PauloCereda she's very energic, I hope you meet here in Germany. She would like you :)

@tohecz I'm shy. :)

@PauloCereda Wurst, quite certainly. And Sauerkraut, of course.
@PauloCereda It's just 900 km from my home.

@egreg Hey I could visit you! :)
@egreg ooh Wurst! :)

7:37 PM
@egreg Amongst other things [and usually 'von Liebig' ;-)]

@JosephWright :)

@PauloCereda no, you're obviously not :)

7:57 PM
@tohecz :)
@egreg: I read now that Juve is interested in Pato, as long as he goes "for free".

8:42 PM
@PauloCereda Really? What for? ;-)

8:56 PM
@egreg That's exactly the question I've been asking myself. :) Juve doesn't need him, and his recent status is terrible. :)

@PauloCereda Poor boy, he used to be the son-in-law of Mr. B!

@egreg Ah yes!

9:30 PM
damn sometimes one gets into a situation with no good solutions

kan
9:42 PM
@egreg I am now trying to have a tex file submitted without a bibfile. Is it OK to have the .bib file copied into the tex file?

@kan maybe you wanna copy the .bbl file if they don't accept bibtex ... ?

@kan It depends on what the people you submit the paper to want. If they ask for the .bib file, just place it at the beginning of your document between \begin{filecontents*}{<filename>.bib} and \end{filecontents*}. If they don't want to bother, just replace the \bibliography{<filename>} command with the contents of the generated .bbl file.

kan
@egreg I am trying to submit to arxiv!
Any suggestions in this light would be helpful...

@kan Use the second strategy.

@kan I'd go with egreg's suggestion on adding the content of the .bbl file.

9:46 PM
@egreg @kan of you can add the .bbl file there, no need to copy its contents inside
arXiv recognizes the \bibliography instruction, it just never runs bibtex

@tohecz One can certainly do \input{<filename>.bbl}, but I believe that a self-contained file is better.

@egreg I always simply ZIP the folder with my document and upload it as a whole. arXiv then trashes all the stuff they don't like, and it works
anyways, I gotta go to bed. I'm pissed off and I think the only way to get over it is to get some sleep

kan
@egreg @tohecz Should I not use biblatex?
If I put in the files, it says ArXiv thing failed to process!

@kan you can use biblatex I think. Well, if arXiv has it already, they used to be very outdated on latex
but arXiv will never run biber nor bibtex for you

@tohecz maybe they have arara. <3
Speaking of this, writelatex has no support for us. :(

9:56 PM
@PauloCereda lol
well, wish me that I decide the better way considering tomorrow, and good night, I go in couple minutes

@tohecz Have a good night, Tom! :)
!!/choose have fun, write boring paper
@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: The great oracle says: write boring paper
D'oh.
!!/answer x^3 - 4x^2 + 6x - 24 = 0
Psmith, the TeX bot, in fixed font mode:

x^3-4 x^2+6 x-24 = 0
(x-4) (x^2+6) = 0
(x-4/3)^3+2/3 (x-4/3)-560/27 = 0
x = 4
x = -i sqrt(6)
x = i sqrt(6)
