Q: How to change the Find Panel in TexShop?

datcnI run a TexShop v3.11 on a Mac OSX 10.8.2. The find panel of TexShop is set to be Ogrekit in Preferences. Then I quit TexShop and reopened it. But, when I use cmd+F in my editing document, the find panel is still the default Apple Find Panel. Could anyone tell me how to fix this?

@egreg Ok. I see that TeXshop has been updated since the question was asked as well. And I just noticed the closed duplicate.

I voted for closing also the other one

@egreg I know not everyone enjoyed the hat-party this year. Here's a wrap-up:
Abby T. Miller on January 03, 2014

Another holiday season has drawn to a close. We’ve had three glorious weeks with our beloved hats. Now as we pack away the tinsel and the party horns, it’s time to put the hats back in their boxes for another year. Before we move on to 2014 with our bare heads (and our full hearts), let’s take a few moments to reminisce.

76,586 users from all over the network earned 214,172 hats this year – that’s just about twice the number of hats they earned last year. 95 sites opted to participate in Winter Bash, which is more than the total number of sites that simply existed during last year’s event. …

Anybody have any complaints/suggestions/feelings about last/this year's Winter Bash?

I'm not seeing this problem in Safari or Firefox on a Mac. Is this a platform dependent problem or was this fixed? If it was fixed it would be a good idea to finalise this thread. — Geoff Pointer 9 hours ago

@PauloCereda Hi, How is Sunday going?

@HarishKumar Hello Harish! A very hot Sunday.

1:09 PM
@tohecz I suppose you added the red/blue lines. Is this correct?

@MarcoDaniel I marked what is the mistake about by these two lines, the logo is misplaced, that's the true mistake

@tohecz Than I can confirm your issue using every installed browser (Opera, Firefox, Chrome) on my Mac.

@MarcoDaniel Oh my.

@PauloCereda Did I missed one?

@MarcoDaniel lynx

1:14 PM
@PauloCereda What's this? Than I can use emacs ;-)

@MarcoDaniel Oh no.

@MarcoDaniel You also missed links

@MarcoDaniel: I'd like to talk to you about our beloved bird, when you have some spare time. :)

@PauloCereda: Sunday evening here is bit cold :-) BTW, any news regarding the interviews (series)? I have a person in mind.

@HarishKumar Nope. Fire at will. :)

1:20 PM
@PauloCereda :-) After passing the exam I have enough time ;-)

@MarcoDaniel Cool! :)

@MarcoDaniel thanks

@Kartik Interesting. There are so much browsers I had never heard about.

@HarishKumar Sounds great! :) I actually need to contact him about arara too. :)

@PauloCereda Sounds good

@cgnieder Danke! :)

arguments:
#arguments for convertion

And the following MWE:
% arara: pdflatex: { shell: true }

I am getting this:

@Kartik You need a second pdflatex run.

J G
@Kartik do you have to run it a second time for the circles to fully align?

1:51 PM

@JG Yes, as tikzmark is based on saving position information from one run and using in a second

J G
Oh ok now I get it to work. I had to resave the file under a new name. I find that happens sometimes. That I am getting a weird syntax error. Then I resave the file to something else and it is ok. It was as if the other file suddenly became corrupt. Are you familiar with what may be happening and how I can go around this?

@JG I think you should check your hard disk.

J G
@Kartik check for what?

@JG I suppose in your previous try, you had an old aux file. The package titletoc writes information like \ttl@finishall into this file.

1:57 PM
@MarcoDaniel: Give me a minute, I'll take a look.

J G
@MarcoDaniel meaning i should have deleted some .axu file?

@MarcoDaniel Yes! I also had the same problem about a month ago. I just deleted the .aux file.

Is anybody familiar with marginnotes in the Tufte style? I am having some major spacing issues when I try combining them with \begin{index}
Especially if I do \begin{samepage} and \end{samepage} around the sets of bullets

@PauloCereda Done.

@MarcoDaniel Danke. :)

J G
Sorry I meant something like: \begin{sampepage} \begin{itemize} \item \item \marginnotes{} \item \end{itemize} \end{samepage}
the bullets are horribly unevenly spaced

@MarcoDaniel You got mail. :)

@barbarabeeton Why doesn't the STIXMath-Regular font have a Math feature?

2:27 PM
@PauloCereda I can see that ;-) Lot of activity on arara here :-) Nice to see. I will be glad to contact Karl If you permit. :-)

@HarishKumar Actually the email will be about the future. :) The tool will grow.

@PauloCereda: Certainly. I am curious to hear news :-)

@HarishKumar I'm watching Doctor Who like crazy, so expect wacky things. :)

@PauloCereda Now you can answer ;-)

@MarcoDaniel I actually had the same idea of you, but I'm reluctant to talk about v4. :)

escapebird, if you will. :)

does anybody know why in the tufte class there may be a blank page sometimes at the end of a chapter? is that so that the chapters always have an even number of pages in them? is that possible to shut off?

Q: Chapter on the right side - How to turn it off?

@PauloCereda :-)

@MarcoDaniel Ready for PEL? :)

@egreg -- you ask, "Why doesn't the STIXMath-Regular font have a Math feature?" i really don't know. i've been involved mostly with the identification of characters and with the shapes of the glyphs; in fact, i wasn't aware that this font doesn't have a math table (or is "feature" not the same as "table" in this sense?). but i suspect that @KhaledHosny might know those details. (and sorry for the oops! i keep forgetting that a carriage return is a terminator.)

@barbarabeeton It's just a nuisance. They would be more useful, however, if the Math table were available.

5:19 PM
@MarcoDaniel: "What's PEL?" you might say. Well, the parrot expression language. Coming soon to arara. :)

'allo, @PauloCereda. i've just enjoyed a wonderful duck concoction for brunch. (see -- i like ducks in many different forms.)

@barbarabeeton ooh! :)

@egreg -- there should be two different formulations of the stix fonts -- one for non-tex usage (.otf only), and one for (la)tex access (with type 1 packaging). i'll ask the folks working on a "refinement" to check on the math table question; are you using (attempting to use) the fonts in non-tex environments (word, open office, mathjax, etc.)?

@barbarabeeton MathJax does it for me on Math.SE; the other environments you mention are unknown to me. ;-)

@egreg -- i'm pleased to hear that! anyhow, now i know how to present the question; thanks.

5:29 PM
@StephanLehmke: I once had to mention the Entscheidungsproblem on a class; I could not remember the word and said something along the lines of Entschuldigen-sie-problem. :)
2
@egreg No OpenOffice at least? I'm shocked. :)

@PauloCereda Indeed. I am saying "What's PEL?" ;-)

@MarcoDaniel You will love it. The showcase will probably be with frontespizio. :)

@PauloCereda If not, I will blame egreg ;-) -- What's with Lua?

6:17 PM
@MarcoDaniel Lua?

kan
@egreg Could you please tell me how to prevent the math in a title being formatted in AMSART class?

6:39 PM
In a long time, I haven't felt as down as just now

@tohecz I'm very sad today. But I have the hope of better days to come. :)

@PauloCereda Well, I quite do not. My EUR1000 laptop is broken, freezes at the moment you switch it on. This means a lot of troubles, and me having to be solving it from abroad

6:53 PM
@kan That's a good question! The answer is "don't use math in titles". ;-)
@kan But there should be no problem; do you mean "should I boldface it"? No.

7:23 PM
@egreg: almost time!

7:48 PM
no one mention cricket

I was trying some old script that saw on the net to try to make tex4ht generate better image for the math. I was getting lost of errors related to fonts. I was wondering what it can mean. Here is a small snippet of the log file....

gohstscript just kept dying, and lots of errors like "failed to make ec-lmr17.110pk". I am using texlive 2013 on linux. This is not important, as I am back to original way to building the images for the math now, and that works. But I was wondering what is the problem. The script uses dvi2bitmap
I guess the fonts needed are simply not there or something. This was an old script. Here is the link to the paper that describes it: folk.uio.no/simek/document/html/documentse8.html
my goal is to find a way to improve the quality of the math images generated by tex4ht. But nothing I tried worked so far. I am stuck at using .png image for the math, but the quality is not very good.

@Nasser you seem to be trying to make pk (bitmap output as if from metafont) from the latin modern fonts which are derived from computer modern but which are not metafont fonts.
@Nasser don't make images of the math.

@DavidCarlisle I know that is your view, and I agree with it. But there is simply no alternative when using tex4ht. What else to do? I tried everything else.
mathjax makes best math, but tex4ht has number of bugs in the mathml it generates.

@Nasser just copy the tex maths straight to the html and use mathjax
@Nasser don't generate mathml, let mathjax do that.

@DavidCarlisle I can't do that. I asked about it at the tex4ht, there is no option in tex4ht to copy the math directly to page. I'll give the link in a minute...
So you see. There are no options other than using .png

@Nasser if it is not built in it is trivial to run a script that replaces each math fragment by [math-fragment-5] runs tex4ht and then does the reverse edit to put the tex maths back.

9:31 PM
@DavidCarlisle I have no idea how to do that. As I said, I asked in the htlatex group itself, and there was no answer to how to do this.
I do not know how to write a script that read html pages and replace mthml with latex code.
if you think it is worth, I can post a question on this forum asking for this and may be you can use your skill to answer it? would this be ok to do?
otherwise, I'll just live with the bad .png images for math with not so good resolution. I just have to get better glasses :)

@Nasser well it's more of a tex4ht qn than a tex one, I'd be surprised if it isn't a trivial tex4ht customisation to have a command such as \foo{$\alpha+\beta$} where `\foo does nothing in latex but is defined to copy its argument verbatim in tex4ht, but I haven't used tex4ht this century:-)

@egreg: good game. :)

@Nasser a simple google finds the main tex4ht developer showing exactly that for inline math (display math can't be much harder) tug.org/pipermail/tex4ht/2011q2/000299.html

@DavidCarlisle ok thanks. But me as a user, I have no idea how to do it. I asked in tex4ht mailing list, and got no reply. so I assumed it is not easy to do. If the expert of htlatex did not have an answer, it must be hard.

@Nasser No, they just didn't answer, you just got some comments from Bill Hammond, who was being helpful in general but not addressing your tex4ht question.

@DavidCarlisle thanks for the link. I did not see this post. I see the response `Actually, it is in our TODO list to write separate packages for
MathJax. In fact, there is a request pending from MathJax developers
in this regard. Volunteers are welcome.` so I hope it is done soon? The post was in 2011. I wish I can help myself, but I have no idea how these things work internally.

@Nasser well I'd just use the code there, which should work fine, the only problem with display math is handling label/ref but that's probelatic anyway (and if you make images you presumably are not handling label to individual lines of the image, so you are losing that already.

@PauloCereda Quite. :)

@PauloCereda better reading than the BBC cricket headlines: England folded in dismal fashion to lose the fifth Test within three days and with it the Ashes series 5-0 to end their miserable winter in entirely appropriate style.

@egreg Too many Brazilians though. :)
@DavidCarlisle :)

9:49 PM
@DavidCarlisle I'll the code you linked to. But I do not understand what "strip at prefix" is supposed to be? In this

\HCode{\expandafter\strip at prefix\meaning\next}}

http://tug.org/pipermail/tex4ht/2011q2/000299.html would you know what I should put in there? I mean, do I literally copy what is shown there as in, or Am I supposed to put something in place of this "strip at prefix" thing?

@PauloCereda But none scored.

@egreg One got a red card. :P

@Nasser In mailing lists it's common that @ is changed into at, so that should be \Hcode{\expandafter\strip@prefix\meaning\next}

@DavidCarlisle oh ! I see, thanks! I am going now to try it and see what happens!
it is not working:
No file ME_431_HW2.4tc
[1] [2] [3] [4]
! Display math should end with $$.
<to be read again>
\bgroup
l.101 \end{equation}

?

will look more into it. But display math seems to be causing a problem now.

10:13 PM
@PauloCereda He wasn't the goalie, was he?

10:31 PM
30 cm of snow and not done yet.

@egreg The defender. :)

I just posted a question tex.stackexchange.com/questions/152604/… on this issue with display math

@AlanMunn If you feel it's too much snow, feel free to pass some over to western Norway. We've had 5 degrees and rain for two weeks.

10:46 PM
        @DavidCarlisle I tried it. I get this error:
        (./foo.aux))
        ! Undefined control sequence.
        <recently read> \strip

        l.6 this is inline math $\sin(x)=0$

        ?

    from the line

       this is inline math $\sin(x)=0$

I do not understand what is the \strip command coming from. I googled for it and do not see it now..... but will keep looking at it....

\Configure{$}{}{}{\expandafter\getMath}%$
\def\getMath#1${\relax$%
    \def\next{$#1$}%
    \HCode{\expandafter\strip@prefix\meaning\next}}

@TorbjørnT. Well this is just coming right after a ice storm that knocked out power for more than 600,000 people here in Michigan and in Ontario for as long as 10 days. (We had no power for that long.) And with a few days of -20C that's not fun. And tomorrow it's supposed to get down to -20 with 30-50km/h winds. Brrr.

This is all too complicated. I do not know why everything is too complicated when it comes to tex4ht.

@Nasser I thought you had officially given up on this?

@AlanMunn -20? Oh my.
I'm melting here.

@AlanMunn I am trying to compile all my HW's to html. I have to use latex for those. I really think tex4ht is just too complex to use.
actuall, I think Latex and tex is too complex as well. But tex4ht is 10 times more complex.

10:52 PM
@PauloCereda The upside is that the university has officially closed tomorrow.

@AlanMunn Yeah, I've noticed that there's been a lot of problems on your side of the pond. Hope things get back to normal soon, if they aren't already.

@AlanMunn Ouch. Tomorrow I'm travelling to São Paulo. I'm worried about the roads.

@TorbjørnT. Hopefully this storm won't do any real damage. It's certainly making travel a mess. But the ice storm was really awful.
@Nasser Well it's trying to do the impossible. :)

@PauloCereda :)

11:01 PM
@Nasser it's \strip@prefix not \strip you need \makeatletter or be in a package to use @ in command names (It is defined in the latex format)

@DavidCarlisle I see. I just copied the code as is. Where would I add this \makeatletter part then? The email post you linked to does not say anything about this. I am adding this:

\Configure{$}{}{}{\expandafter\getMath}%$
\def\getMath#1${\relax$%
    \def\next{$#1$}%
    \HCode{\expandafter\strip@prefix\meaning\next}}

to the tex4ht configuration file. WHich is read automagically by texht4t. What do I need to type to make \string@prefix work? And where should I put it? thanks.
I've never used \makeatletter but seen it before. Will go now look more into it...

\makeatletter
\Configure{$}{}{}{\expandafter\getMath}%$
\def\getMath#1${\relax$%
    \def\next{$#1$}%
    \HCode{\expandafter\strip@prefix\meaning\next}}
\makeatother
@Nasser ^^this

@Nasser you must have seen 1000's of uses if \makeatletter \makeatother on this site:-)

Q: What do \makeatletter and \makeatother do?

CaramdirMany TeX “hacks” begin with \makeatletter and end with \makeatother. What do these commands do?

@tohecz thanks!, I tried, and now no error. It did pass the inline math to the HTML page, but mathjax did not use it at all ! Here is the HTML generated

<!--l. 6--><p class="noindent" >this is inline math $\sin (x)=0$
<div class="par-math-display"><!--l. 8--><math
xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"
display="block" ><mrow
>

And there is the HTML page:
and here is the latex file
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{amsmath}

\begin{document}

this is inline math $\sin(x)=0$

\[
\fbox{$\sin(x)=0$}   % OK
\]

\begin{equation}
\sin(x)=0   \tag{1}   % OK
\end{equation}

\end{document}
I am on a new front of knowledge now. Will need to spend more time looking at it...
Even though mathjax is loaded on the page, I see it it loading, it did not process those inline math for some reason...

@Nasser as it says in the introduction, mathjax use \( \) by default, to turn on $ you need
<script type="text/x-mathjax-config">
MathJax.Hub.Config({
  tex2jax: {inlineMath: [['$','$'], ['\\(','\\)']]}
});
</script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="path-to-mathjax/MathJax.js?config=TeX-AMS-MML_HTMLorMML"></script>

11:13 PM
Oh, I thought I had that there in my configuration file. ! Thanks, I know about this, I must have not copied it, will correct now...thank you

@AlanMunn We have religious holiday tomorrow: Epiphany. ;-)

@egreg I can attest that nothing will be revealed tomorrow here, it will all be covered with snow. :)

@AlanMunn :)
@AlanMunn I was looking at the start of San Francisco at Green Bay: no snow there.

11:46 PM
@egreg Yes, they just have the cold. The way the weather pattern works around here usually is warm wet air comes up from the south and cold dry air swoops in from the north west (Canada) and voilà, blizzard.

@AlanMunn Nice place to live in during winter. ;-)
@AlanMunn I can assure that my winters in Sicily were slightly better. :P

@egreg I don't really mind the snow. After all, I used to live in Montréal and it gets much more snow and is colder than here.

@AlanMunn What about going around the town the night of 5 February (St. Agatha's day, BIG feast at Catania) without gloves on? On my scooter, of course.

@egreg More fool you for not having gloves. ;-)

@AlanMunn I had them, but under the seat. Not much use for them in Sicily, unless you go up Aetna, of course: at 2000m (Rifugio Sapienza) it can be cold even there, in winter time.
