@PauloCereda In a date in Portuguese, would you add an ordinal (like superscript 'o') as in English Jan 10th (10º de jan)?

12:42 AM
@AlanMunn No, just 10 de Janeiro. I tend to write months capitalized. :)
I think only 1º de <month> is the exception.

1:09 AM
@PauloCereda That's kind of what I thought. Are people split 50/50 on capitalization?

@AlanMunn I believe so. :) Apparently, the new reform tells us to avoid capitalization of them:
Use minúsculas

1 - Para designar as estações do ano, os meses e os dias da semana: primavera, verão, janeiro, dezembro, segunda-feira, sábado.

What was the post gathering creative use of LaTex?

@PauloCereda who dictates those directives for the Portuguese language? out of curiosity :)

hhh
1:33 AM
@DavidCarlisle Just a crazy idea: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/144169/… :)
Perfectionist cannot just write, thank you :D

1:51 AM
@leo There is the Academia Brasileira de Letras although it has no official authority.

leo
@AlanMunn I see. Thanks :)

2:03 AM
@leo There was a treaty signed in 1990 between all the Portuguese speaking countries to adopt a unified spelling system for the language; this came into effect in 2009 in Brazil.

Hello, I am nearly brand new to TeX.SE, but I am a student doing a Concurrent B.Eng/B.Sc in Computer Engineering/Theoretical Physics, and so I write a lot of short, technical papers. What are some good TeX resources for technical writing, such as formatting and citation frameworks. Also, should I be using REVTeX? (For localization context, I'm a Canadian.)

Is it a good practice to skip some labels in an enumerate as follows?
\documentclass[preview,border=12pt,varwidth]{standalone}
\usepackage{enumitem}
\begin{document}
\begin{enumerate}[label=\alph*.,start=2]
	\item The label of this item is b.\addtocounter{enumi}{2}
	\item But this one must be e. How to make it as required?
\end{enumerate}
\end{document}
As I want to be a best-practice evangelist.

Hi folks, is there any difference between the following?
$a \text{\quad text \quad} b$ and $a \quad \text{text} \quad b$?

@Marienplatz Try it, you'll see that the first one has more space. Before the b you get an interword space and then a \quad.

@TorbjørnT. Wait... trying....

@Marienplatz In the first one, all of the space is inside an hbox so potentially messing up line breaks

@JosephWright So which should be used for the sake of best-practice?

9:18 AM
I find that apacite never works right for me... Grrr.

11:08 AM
@willrobertson Just passing through or do you have some 'TeX time'?

11:24 AM
@JosephWright Oh I just said that on site, didn't see it had already been asked/answered here:-)

11:36 AM
@Marienplatz No difference; in both cases the quad corresponding to the current font is used.

Does anyone know how to silence LaTeX Warning!: Marginpar moved by ###.## pt warnings?

1:53 PM
@percusse Perhaps silence can do that.

@percusse arara. :)

@TorbjørnT. ah of course! Only Paul can come up with that. Thank you
When working with LATEX, messages are utterly important.
Ok, this was the well-behaved LATEX user’s offering to the gods. Now, the fact is, when processing long documents, repeated messages can really get boring, especially when there’s nothing you can do about them. For instance, everybody knows the following:
Marginpar on page x moved.
When you encounter that message, it means that you have to keep in mind for the next compilations that ‘there is a warning that I can ignore,’ which sounds pretty paradoxical.
Every documentation of this guy is priceless

@egreg I have no idea. :)

I was about to go palindromic: an accept would have taken me to 231132; unfortunately I only got an upvote. :)
Well, I'm palindromic in Italian.SE. :)

@egreg yay!
@egreg: I can't wait to see @DavidCarlisle registering there and answering questions with picture mode. :)

3:14 PM
@PauloCereda Or doing as the English have done for centuries: taking words from other languages without knowing what they mean.

@egreg :)

4:01 PM
When we have a sentence ending with an ellipsis, how should we type the code correctly? Is it correct to write as "some text will end with an ellipsis\ldots." or "some text will end with an ellipsis \ldots." (there is a space before \ldots) or "some text will end with an ellipsis \ldots" (there is a space before \ldots and no period at the last) or "some text will end with an ellipsis\ldots" (no period at the last)? Which one is the correct one?

@Marienplatz Don't use dots at the end of a sentence. ;-)

@egreg So when should we use \ldots?

@Marienplatz For German the Duden has some rules: duden.de/sprachwissen/rechtschreibregeln/auslassungspunkte In short: there is a space before an ellipsis except when it disrupts a word (“Verd…”) and if at the end of a sentence the full stop is left out

Seriously, there's no general rule: some traditions want four dots, some three; be consistent. Use ~\ldots when a space is needed.

@egreg That's called "embracing other cultures" isn't it?

4:11 PM
@cgnieder: OK. Thanks.
N.A.T.O.~\ldots. :-)

@DavidCarlisle Fagocitation.

@PauloCereda picture mode might not be suitable but I could draw an Italian house

@DavidCarlisle LOL
@DavidCarlisle: apparently, the English buildings fall down easily than Italian ones:

Fail: that's tower bridge not London bridge

@DavidCarlisle LOL

4:21 PM
@PauloCereda Note the first line of:
London Bridge refers to several historical bridges that have spanned the River Thames between the City of London and Southwark, in central London. The current crossing, which opened to traffic in 1973, is a box girder bridge built from concrete and steel. This replaced a 19th-century stone-arched bridge, which in turn superseded a 600-year-old medieval structure. This was preceded by a succession of timber bridges, the first built by the Roman founders of London. @DavidCarlisle Oh my!

@PauloCereda An expensive mistake to make if you buy the wrong bridge:

@DavidCarlisle LOL

@DavidCarlisle In olden times the London bridge had houses on it, like Ponte Vecchio in Florence.

@egreg london bridge is falling down, my fair lady:-)

@DavidCarlisle The Torre di Pisa isn't. ;-)

@egreg Only because English engineers underpinned it, so I believe:-)

Duck News:

Coin? Coin? COIN?!
Qu'est-ce que?!

@kan It's "qua” in Italian.

@PauloCereda Video production underway

4:40 PM
@JosephWright woohoo!
@egreg In Portuguese, either quá or quac. :)
@kan I was expecting a russian duck with those communist hats. :)

Apparently Russian ducks say кря (source eleceng.adelaide.edu.au/personal/dabbott/animal.html)

@egreg I see a reverse R! :)

@PauloCereda That would be ‘krya’

@egreg Oh my! The London Bridge is falling down! :)
@JosephWright: David wants to sell me some bridge. Should I? :)

Second one being converted by iMovie
Should get three or four done today: last two will take longer

5:30 PM
@JosephWright Great quality! :)

Hello LaTeX folks, I have a question regarding the conversion from .eps to .pdf in LaTeX.
! Package pdftex.def Error: File `../figure-eps-converted-to.pdf' not found.
See the pdftex.def package documentation for explanation.
Any help would be appreciated. Meanwhile, I am watching @JosephWright's video.
These are in my preamble: \usepackage[pdftex]{graphicx}, \usepackage{epstopdf}, \usepackage{caption}
When I click on the message/log error, I get this: "It seems that this file cannot be correctly decoded with the default encoding setting (UTF-8). Use this encoding: ISO-8859-1

@Costanza That means the conversion failed for some reason. personally I think it's easier to just convert the eps externally and not use epstopdf just ps2pdf figure.eps figure.pdf then you have a pdf file and \includegraphics{figure} will do the right thing

5:46 PM
@DavidCarlisle ok, thanks, I am going to try that.

@Costanza we need more monochrome people here, too many coloured ducks and green squares.

6:05 PM
Third video uploaded: I'm hopeful of getting at least one more done today
@Costanza Have you been in before: don't remember the name!

6:16 PM
@DavidCarlisle LOL

7:01 PM
@DavidCarlisle LOL!
@JosephWright I was something like Costi before (I changed my nickname if that is what you mean)

7:28 PM
@PauloCereda maybe French ducks are notoriously short of small change? ;)

7:42 PM
@cgnieder LOL

8:24 PM
@egreg: did you see what happened in the game between Nocerina and Salernitana? :(

1 hour later…
9:32 PM
@DavidCarlisle I did the conversion with ps2pdf but the process misinterpreted my pictures. They made them very small in a very big white space. Also, LaTeX did not accept those files anyways. Same error: ! Package pdftex.def Error: File `../figure-eps-converted-to.pdf' not found.
See the pdftex.def package documentation for explanation.

@Costanza that's two separate problems, If os2pdf is minterpretting the eps then that points to a problem in that file (which is possibly the root cause of the error) if you have a pdf, latex shouldn't be trying to makeone so there should be no -eps-converted-to.pdf' files and latex shouldn't be looking for them, You should just have graphicx package and \includegraphics, no epstopdf convertion package in that case

@DavidCarlisle Right. I just removed the \usepackage{epstopdf} but get the same error.
@DavidCarlisle Actually, the error is: ! Package pdftex.def Error: File `../file.pdf' no
t found.
See the pdftex.def package documentation for explanation.
Type H <return> for immediate help.

@Costanza ah it depends on your security settings but by default you can't read files in directories above where you are, try having the file in the current directory and lose the ../

@PauloCereda kool! :)

9:48 PM
@PauloCereda Crazy people. You should know that Nocera is a few kilometers from Salerno.
@PauloCereda But I saw also something more pleasurable. ;-)

@DavidCarlisle I am running a composite document, with a Main document including the preamble and the call for the Sections, if this makes sense. Thanks to your suggestion, I have moved the .pdf files into the same folder of my Section. Same problem anyway.

@Costanza you need to specify the path relative to your main document, sorry hard to debug path related issues from a distance do any images include or is it just a problem with this one?

@DavidCarlisle Actually, thanks for taking care of this! The problem is with all files. And as I said, now my .pdf files are not good in any case. I wrote my whole dissertation with the eps method, including 70 pictures. This is unusual to me.

10:20 PM
@egreg :)
@Costanza I could try to provide an answer with arara managing all conversions, but so far I didn't implement a way of automatically discovering files based on pattern matching. It's in my TODO list. :(
@DavidCarlisle: Is the London bridge still falling down? :)

@PauloCereda I am not sure I got what you said.

@Costanza I could try to provide a semi-automatic way of dealing with .eps files without requiring \usepackage{epstopdf}, but I don't have a way of finding which files to convert via pattern matching, only by explicitly telling the rule their names - and for 10+ files, this is far from doable. :)
But don't worry, most of things I say doesn't make sense at all. :P

@PauloCereda They do! It's just late for me here, I am a little sleepy and sad because every time I have a LaTeX problem I freak.

@Costanza I can relate to that, I had problems with theorems and the cvmono document class from Springer all yesterday long.
ooh an owl! /pokes @Jake

Q: Why will PDFs from TeXworks not print? Will this issue ever be fixed?

MelanieI am fairly new to LaTeX, TeX etc.(I have the latest MacTeX package) and I just recently tried to print out one of my documents made on TeXworks. It would not send any data to my printer. I copy and pasted all my code into TeXShop and it printed. Why is this?

What if I add a print directive to arara?
% arara: print: { copies: 10000000000 }
ooh it's evil! I like it.

@PauloCereda Will you provide a print routine working on all different OSs?

@egreg Tricky, but doable. :)
I think I can handle that. :)

@PauloCereda Maybe it can be done with Java.
@PauloCereda I see this more as a macro for TeXworks.

@egreg Indeed.

@PauloCereda I don't know if one can write a script for TeXworks that calls some Java program.

10:50 PM
@egreg Gimme some minutes. :)
