Requires some nerves to watch it until the end

@percusse What does the fox [news] say? :)

pdflatex is amazingly fast in TexLive 2013. I have 100 pages pdf file, full of equations and it builds it in less than 1 seconds. This includes all the display scrolling on the monitor, and I am using a virtual machine with Linux on it as well.

While tex4ht takes, for the same file, about 15 minutes to convert to HTML. But tex4ht has to go through so much more!

It's funny when a question gets 5 identical answers :)

@egreg but I got the tick back off you:-)

9:09 AM
@DavidCarlisle For a clearly buggy solution: the 1 is not removed. :P

He only asked for 0 special case but `ifnum1=\tmp\relax\else\tmp\fi could probably be added:-)

9:26 AM
@DavidCarlisle My addition copes also with symbolic coefficients. ;-)

Special offer! The TUG and UK-TUG discount codes will also work on my children's books until 20th December 2013. (After that date, those codes will only work on my LaTeX books.)

@egreg I don't care: I have the 15 points and am happy

@DavidCarlisle The OP has been switching the tick; maybe…

2 hours later…
11:46 AM
@DavidCarlisle: guess who got the tick? :)

@PauloCereda Herbert? :P

@egreg Oopsie. :)

12:08 PM
@PauloCereda well at least it wasn't @egreg

@DavidCarlisle I can change it. :) Should I? :)

@PauloCereda You nearly killed one of my colleagues this morning

@DavidCarlisle Me? What did I do?

@PauloCereda I showed him our corporate home page on my screen and ( thought he was going to have a heart attack (gizoogle:-)

@DavidCarlisle LOL

A: What are the most common mistakes that users of (La)TeX and Friends make?

Paulo Cereda\begin{flamewar} In my humble opinion, the biggest mistake users make is: trying to make TeX behave just like Word. :) Deal with it. I'll get my coat. \end{flamewar}

Q: How to plot blurred curves with PGFPlots?

juliohmI'm trying to replicate the following plot with PGFPlots: In this answer, the author plays with opacity when drawing overlapping ellipses. Is it possible to use similar code with arbitrary curves? Ideally, the confidence intervals should be specified for every abscissa. Do you have any hint ...

Blurred curves? What rhymes with plot me?

1:48 PM
@PauloCereda My original answer to that question (which I didn't post) was "biggest mistake is using LaTeX instead of Word. " :-)

@DavidCarlisle haha I'm tempted to delete my answer. In retrospect, the question doesn't seem to fit our standards. :)

@PauloCereda yes I think it should be closed as too broad really

@DavidCarlisle I deleted my answer, it's pointless to keep adding answers to that question, I guess. :)

@PauloCereda I voted to close

arara!

@AlanMunn oh my!

kan
@DavidCarlisle You're really funny, you know! :)

Q: Establishing a new LaTeX repository in the university

antmw1361Since there is only one TeX server in Australia, I am thinking to initiate negotiations with my institution to host a TeX repository on the website of University. First of all, please give me some hints/clues on how should I convince the university for this. In the other words, what is the adva...

The answer to this question is actually a comment to Henrique.
And I'm not sure the three mirrors are up and running (Unicamp and PUC-PR might be).

Is this the correct way of typing an ISBN? ISBN: 3--540--13883--8

5:38 PM
@PauloCereda I always thought they were supposed to be hyphens rather than en-dashes (but I could be wrong).

@NicolaTalbot oh!

@PauloCereda no with a single - I think (or at least if you want anyone to search for the string)

@PauloCereda Oxford Style Manual: the ISBN is separated by en spaces or hyphens.

@NicolaTalbot @DavidCarlisle: thanks. :)

6:05 PM
@PauloCereda Actually I think my copy of the Oxford Style Manual is a bit dated. It says that ISBNs have 10 digits. That just shows the drawback of my method (heaving a heavy book off the shelf) verses @DavidCarlisle's method (using the awesome powers of the Internet).

@NicolaTalbot I wonder if David has the Internet as an emacs buffer.

@PauloCereda LOL :-)

6:57 PM
Don't you gus hate when we need to include a photo in those article biographies? I always look like some wacky dude.

@PauloCereda, out of interest, how long did the Brazilian texlive translation take you?
+port

@ForkrulAssail Three or four days in a row, perhaps?

@PauloCereda LOL :-) Yes, I don't like them as well. It's always difficult finding a decent shot where I don't look like I'm manic or squinting (or wearing a silly hat).

@NicolaTalbot Me too! :)

7:13 PM
@PauloCereda You could go the @JosephWright route.
@PauloCereda Or Photoshop yourself into one of my duck pictures.

@AlanMunn :)
@Alan: actually, worse than the photo is the bio itself. :)

@PauloCereda You could just say in your bio that you're a duck posing as a computer scientist.

@NicolaTalbot oooooh!

@NicolaTalbot Well as they say, if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, and uses vi like a duck it must be a duck.

@AlanMunn Duck typing. :)

7:28 PM
@PauloCereda Have you come across that duck search engine?

@NicolaTalbot My default engine. :)

@PauloCereda I might've guessed! :-)

7:56 PM
@PauloCereda That's why you need to get a small baby to stick in front

8:18 PM
@DavidCarlisle :)

@DavidCarlisle But that would also require changing his name on a regular basis.

I confess my RSS feeds are far from what most people define as "normal". :)

@PauloCereda Nice font art! Was it a TikZ or PSTricks RSS feed?

@StefanKottwitz TeXblog, 100% TikZ madness! :)

8:35 PM
@PauloCereda Do you know how I read RSS feeds?

@StefanKottwitz Do tell. :)

@PauloCereda I have a bad memory, so I simply register a domain and set up a small webserver for serving me the feed, such as tikz.net or pstricks.net - sorry I used German feeds there :-)

@StefanKottwitz ooh!

@egreg, @DavidCarlisle: Am still stuck with tex.stackexchange.com/questions/134597/…. Any suggestions on how to debug the issue. For instance, how can I see what the save_size used is for a particular run? If I can figure out what increases it, then I might be able to fix the problem.

@PeterGrill the save stack usage is shown in the final line of the log:
     37i,10n,23p,2962b,165s stack positions out of 5000i,500n,10000p,200000b,80000s
@PeterGrill the s number

@DavidCarlisle: Ahh... Ok... Also, what do I need to do AFTER editing the texmf.cnf file in an attempt to increase it. I don't think that will worth for me, but worth a try..

@PeterGrill as far as I know you don't need to do anything the change to .cnf should have immediate effect (you should see the out of.. number in that log message change

I think I only edited the "/usr/local/texlive/2013/texmf.cnf" file instead of "/usr/local/texlive/2013/texmf-dist/web2c/texmf.cnf" as I thought that was what was the correct one to edit, but will try editing the main one as per your answer.

also \tracingrestores2 will cause restores (ie popping the save stack) to be logged

11:34 PM
@PeterGrill Never touch the main texmf.cnf; changing the setting in the top level one is what's needed, because /usr/local/texlive/2013/texmf.cnf is read first and already set value are not changed by files read in later.

@DavidCarlisle The "/usr/local/texlive/2013/texmf-dist/web2c/texmf.cnf" has "save_size = 100000", but the run's still crap out at 80000
@egreg So, which is the correct one to edit: "/usr/local/texlive/2013/texmf.cnf", or "/usr/local/texlive/2013/texmf-dist/web2c/texmf.cnf". I thought the first one was the correct one to edit.

@PeterGrill The first you named.

@egreg Ok, so after editing it, do I need to run "sudo texhash" or "sudo fmtutil-sys --all", or is there something else that needs to run. is there a \show\save_size that I can see that it is set to within TeX

@PeterGrill No matter what value I set to save_size I get 80000s in the log file; also after rebuilding the format.

@PeterGrill hm I thought it would just happen but it has no effect when I try it,
what @egreg just said
@PeterGrill just shows, you shouldn't believe what you read on the internet

11:45 PM
@DavidCarlisle :-)

@PeterGrill When changing save_size it's the b part that's increased: I set it to 20000 and lo, I get 37i,11n,35p,2952b,221s stack positions out of 5000i,500n,10000p,200000b,80000s
No, it doesn't matter. :(

:11798806: But my failure is in the s part, I think.

@PeterGrill I suppose we have to dig out the web2c change files and see if that's settable....

@DavidCarlisle: I have "save_size = 500000" in the /usr/local/texlive/2013/texmf.cnf file and the b part still says 200000b, so don't think it works. But, I think increasing it would only be a temporary solution. I really need to figure out why it is happening.

@PeterGrill as I say add \tracingstats2 and/or \tracingrestores2 and then stare at the log
