@Qrrbrbirlbel It is a bit daunting. And also I suspect that it presupposes a lot more knowledge of the underlying TeX code than we think.

In addition to that, Tantau and TikZ teaches one to do things most basically ("works with plain TeX") so that's rather contrarious...

Basically I just need to know whether to unzip the mathgifg.tds.zip file into the root of my $TEXMF folder or if I need to distribute the subfolders in their respective folders that already exist (fonts, tex, etc.) - I am afraid unzipping it to the root will overwrite existing folders

Unless I am meant to just dump the folder itself into mt $TEXMF folder

@Qrrbrbirlbel Using standalone? If you have the tikzpicture in a separate file using the standalone class, you can add it to the beamer doc with \includestandalone{filename}. Cropping can be specified with the border option to the document class, or using the normal clip,trim=... as with includegraphics. But I'm not sure if I'm even close to an answer here ...

This answer (tex.stackexchange.com/a/129934/34355) calls for updating $TEXMF/web2c/updmap.cfg - but that folder is empty on my installation

Q: How to maintain HTML internal links when converting with Pandoc

I am trying to convert from html to pdf with Pandoc. The output is pretty nice, still with the command pandoc index.html -o output.pdfI lose all my internal links (from table of contents to chapters, from text to footnotes, etc). Is there any way to keep all the links also in the output?

Very borderline for on topic? I guess the problem is squarely with Pandoc not LaTeX.

@Dan You should never modify the contents of /usr/local/texlive/2013/...: make a copy in /usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/tex/latex/, then run texhash /usr/local/texlive/texmf-local

I made mistake of following directions in your answer literally earlier and just unzipped the mathgifg in root of local folder but did not work - hence my edit to clarify

@Dan When you unzip mathgifg.tds.zip, you'll see it contains a structure very similar to that inside /usr/local/texlive/2013. The idea is that unzipping 'in place' in a local tree will automatically position the files correctly.

@Dan That's a Mac-specific thing, and only happens with Finder. From the Terminal or on Linux/PC the 'sensible' behaviour occurs.

@Qrrbrbirlbel could you do me a favour? I'm currently writing my bachelor theses. I found a scheme on the internet but this is a gif. so its way to low quality to include it in my paper, @cgnieder tried helping my by using an inkscape plugin but this did not does the best result.

You can use Ipe to ease up the replication process. After installing Ipe (if you don't have it) you might want to change how Latex is compiled. but instead of nodes I would suggest using coordinates and then after everything is done place the gray nodes on top.

Then you can use

@Rico You draw a thick line then you put two nodes at each end via pos keys. Then you use sloped key so that they are rotated tangential to the path. But then you rotate 90 degrees and then you perturb the positioning with above and below

@Rico Did you put an empty node or something else? standalone should crop it correctly

@percusse no the size comes from the backgroundimage which has the legend on the left side

you can add trim options to the includegraphics

hmm let me see where qrr did that

@Rico so in the second option of nodescope add this [width=.9\textwidth,trim=0 120 160 0,clip]{rico.png}, I'm not remembering which number is which side of the picture but play with those numbers. The order is I guess, left bottom right top

@hhh You need a larger page. You can also scale the tikzpicture, e.g. \begin{tikzpicture}[scale=0.3], but that doesn't look too good.
