@Qrrbrbirlbel It is a bit daunting. And also I suspect that it presupposes a lot more knowledge of the underlying TeX code than we think.

In addition to that, Tantau and TikZ teaches one to do things most basically ("works with plain TeX") so that's rather contrarious...

@Qrrbrbirlbel @JosephWright has written a bit on his blog: texdev.net/tag/programming-latex3

Anyway, I have to go. It's time for dinner.

12:55 AM
Does anybody know how I can use standalone + beamer + TikZ so that I have only the TikZ picture on the page?
@hhh Still interested in your hypercube?

1:15 AM
@Qrrbrbirlbel I don't think I follow (probably too tired), can you clarify?

Dan
@JosephWright you around by chance? I need some clarification on something in your answer

@TorbjørnT. I want to crop a TikZ picture in beamer frames ...

Dan
Can anyone help me with #2 of this? tex.stackexchange.com/a/129934/34355
Basically I just need to know whether to unzip the mathgifg.tds.zip file into the root of my $TEXMF folder or if I need to distribute the subfolders in their respective folders that already exist (fonts, tex, etc.) - I am afraid unzipping it to the root will overwrite existing folders
Unless I am meant to just dump the folder itself into mt $TEXMF folder

@Qrrbrbirlbel Using standalone? If you have the tikzpicture in a separate file using the standalone class, you can add it to the beamer doc with \includestandalone{filename}. Cropping can be specified with the border option to the document class, or using the normal clip,trim=... as with includegraphics. But I'm not sure if I'm even close to an answer here ...

@Jubobs Can you post your mwe here?

1:30 AM
@TorbjørnT. The problem is that I have an animated TikZ picture ... doesn't matter, isn't important anyway.

I don't have a udpmap file to update
This answer (tex.stackexchange.com/a/129934/34355) calls for updating $TEXMF/web2c/updmap.cfg - but that folder is empty on my installation
Anyone know why this might be?

Dan

GAHHHHH!!!!!!
Done everything in this: tex.stackexchange.com/a/129934/34355
Followed it exactly
still can't find the package
Oh well
I GOT IT TO WORK!!! w00t!!!
The directions weren't clear, had to fix them

Q: How to maintain HTML internal links when converting with Pandoc

FrancescoI am trying to convert from html to pdf with Pandoc. The output is pretty nice, still with the command pandoc index.html -o output.pdfI lose all my internal links (from table of contents to chapters, from text to footnotes, etc). Is there any way to keep all the links also in the output?

Very borderline for on topic? I guess the problem is squarely with Pandoc not LaTeX.

Dan
@JosephWright I made a copy of the erdc class
but it won't find the copied one
is there some way to make it recognize it?

@Dan Where did you put it (and the original), and what did you call the copy?

Dan
@JosephWright the original was already installed at /usr/local/texlive/2013/texmf-dist/tex/latex/
@JosephWright i just made a copy and added -me on it
erdc-me
changed the cls file name too and the references within the cls file
but it doesn't find it
i am thinking somehow i need to run texhash
not sure what is right way, and where from
just run it from latex directory?

@Dan You should never modify the contents of /usr/local/texlive/2013/...: make a copy in /usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/tex/latex/, then run texhash /usr/local/texlive/texmf-local

Dan
@JosephWright hmm ok

7:09 AM
(Hash as root)
The 'main' tree is only supposed to be modified by the TeX Live management software

Dan
where in the local folder does class file go?
I made mistake of following directions in your answer literally earlier and just unzipped the mathgifg in root of local folder but did not work - hence my edit to clarify
i presume same holds here
it doesn't just go in root
Where specifically?

@Dan /usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/tex/latex/erdc/erdc-me.cls
@Dan From the Terminal? Should have maintained the directory structure: that's the point of a .tds.zip

Dan
@JosephWright ? not following

@Dan When you unzip mathgifg.tds.zip, you'll see it contains a structure very similar to that inside /usr/local/texlive/2013. The idea is that unzipping 'in place' in a local tree will automatically position the files correctly.

Dan
@JosephWright I thought it would try to overwrite existing folders

7:16 AM
@Dan That's a Mac-specific thing, and only happens with Finder. From the Terminal or on Linux/PC the 'sensible' behaviour occurs.

Dan

It's finally working!
It only took a couple weeks of fiddling/learning and LOTS of help from y'all
Thanks!
Now hopefully I can get it to work on the Windows side on Monday as well haha

Quiet today: everyone reading the unanswered questions?

hhh
@Qrrbrbirlbel It is interesting how many different ways people are finding to vizualise it, eye-opening!
How can I get alignment to an equation without getting the equation number?

$$\text{mlf}_1+\text{mlf}_2 &= \{(0,13), (3,12), (4,-55), (7,-4)\}

\\
&=_{\text{binary}} \{(0000_{b},13), (0011_{b},12), (0100_{b},-55), (0111_{b},-4)\} \\$$
(If I add there \begin{align}...\end{align}, then I get the the equation number but I don't want to get it.)
I am trying to remove the equation signs on the right
Moved here.

10:09 AM
@hhh Did you try align*?
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{amsmath}
\begin{document}

\begin{align*}
\mathrm{mlf}_1 + \mathrm{mlf}_2 &= \{(0,13), (3,12), (4,-55), (7,-4)\}
\\
&=_{\mathrm{binary}} \{(0000_{b},13), (0011_{b},12), (0100_{b},-55), (0111_{b},-4)\}
\end{align*}

\end{document}
BTW, the 'text' looks mathematical to me, so I'd use \mathrm

What is a matrix operation where you multiply every element of the row?
$A=\begin{pmatix} 1 & 2 & 3 \\ 1 & 1 & 1 \end{pmatrix}, SomeOperation(A)=\begin{pmatrix}1*2*3 \\ 1*1*1\end{pmatrix}$, what is the operation SomeOperation?
(asked also in Math.SE chat because perhaps more related to Math)

1:39 PM
@SeanAllred If I recall correctly, I wrote it in Java + JS.

2:36 PM
Hi there, any TikZ pro here?
@Qrrbrbirlbel could you do me a favour? I'm currently writing my bachelor theses. I found a scheme on the internet but this is a gif. so its way to low quality to include it in my paper, @cgnieder tried helping my by using an inkscape plugin but this did not does the best result.

So no one took me up on the showexpl question: 250 rep disappears into the ether

@werner RE: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/129971/…. Will you turn your comment into an answer or should I write one?

@JosephWright I don't know anything about logreq, so you write up something and include my comments as well.

@Werner OK

5:17 PM
@Rico No pro but can I give it a shot?

@percusse Thank you! I figured it out myself (@cgnieder did help alot) I'm currently drawing on the original and will remove it from the background afterwards.

@Rico Is it potrace that you have tried
?

@percusse ? I use the grid from one of the TeX.sx questions

Q: Drawing on an image with TikZ

nacho4dRecently I have learned how to draw simple stuff with TikZ. I really like it. Now I wonder if it is possible to draw with TikZ on a image. Instead of pasting a image in Illustrator and adding some vectors to point something in the picture I would like to do it using TikZ. Is it possible? For ex...

@Rico potrace plugin can convert bitmap pictures to vector with quite nice quality

@percusse the original one is a very poor gif

5:21 PM
It's not perfect but certainly does a good job
Can I see it if that's not secret weapon blueprint?

@percusse sure

@Rico I usually do this

A: Best way to replicate the node diagram in LeeMcq08?

percusseYou can use Ipe to ease up the replication process. After installing Ipe (if you don't have it) you might want to change how Latex is compiled. You can do this by including the relevant commands (such as small math fonts etc.) in Edit -> Document properties -> Latex Preamble option. Then, from Ip...

hmm ipe doesn't like gifs

@percusse :) what i currently have looks like this:
@percusse just need to connect the dots and do the small gray numbers on the lines, still i dont know how to align and rotate them yet :)

5:29 PM
@Rico it looks like drawing from scratch is indeed the way to go. Do you have the coordinates of the gray points?
Or just eyeballing?

@percusse eyeballing is what I'm doing for the last hour but I'm getting really good with guessing

@Rico Hahah

@percusse Don't have the exact position. I've already drawn the gray lines so I could tell you guest positions of grey numbers

@Rico Well I can run a quick foreach for each loop and then put gray dots on top of them if you want
but I need the coords
@Rico you can fill in something like
\begin{tikzpicture}[ricogray/.style={draw,circle,fill=gray,draw=blue,inner sep=1pt}]
% orange loop
\foreach\x in{(1,0.28),(0.5,0.7)}\node[ricogray] at \x {};
\end{tikzpicture}

@percusse is it possible to precise the position of connectionlines?

5:35 PM
but instead of nodes I would suggest using coordinates and then after everything is done place the gray nodes on top.

that would ensure that the lines are looking like connected
@Rico guessing where they hit the circles is too much of a work
Overprinting the gray nodes on top is way easier

@percusse ok
@percusse ok now i need to figure out how to fade out the backgroundpicture :P

@Rico Put the image in a node with includegraphics
Then you can use
\node[opacity=0.1] (a) at (0,0) {\includegraphics{image name}};
But place it first then draw so your stuff stays on top

\begin{tikzpicture}\sffamily
\begin{nodescope}
[name=ricosbild]
[width=.9\textwidth]{rico.png}
[nodescope grid]
is what ive got

5:42 PM
where does the nodescope come from?
from an answer?

@percusse from the link i posted earlyer

@Rico Hmm I don't see any nodescope there

@percusse my bad, this is the right one: texwelt.de/wissen/fragen/1152/…

But anyways, try [name=ricosbild,opacity=0.1]
hoping that it goes to the right place as an option
@Rico Then what I have given above should dim the image. I really don't want to read what Qrr did there. It's a little too much for my taste for a grid :P

5:48 PM
@Rico Wow almost there :)

@percusse the orange Numbers should be no problem, how do i rotate a text? for the gray line annotations?

@Rico Example coming up just a sec
Antivirus kicked in

Q: Headers and footers for listing environment?

Chris HaydenWhat I need to be able to do is apply a header and footer when I use the listings environment. I have a few requirements: The header and footer should be outside the listing itself, i.e. they are not part of the listing content. The amount of space between the header and the listing should be ...

Perhasp package listingscould help, but op was not seen since July 2012 ...

@Rico This is one way
\begin{tikzpicture}
\draw[line width=2.5ex,gray] (0,0) -- (135:4cm)
node[font=\sffamily,sloped,rotate=90,pos=1,above=-2.5mm] {12}
node[font=\sffamily,sloped,rotate=90,pos=0,below=-2.5mm] {34};
\end{tikzpicture}
and it should give

@Kurt Doesn't mean it should be closed

5:55 PM
@Rico I used the default text size so you can fiddle around with it

@JosephWright But what to do with it then?

@Kurt Well, try to answer it ;-)

@Kurt Some can stay open you know :P

@percusse works like a charm even though im not really understanding what im doing there :P

@Rico Black Magic

6:01 PM
@percusse Well, it seems a little bit too broad for me ...

@Kurt You can vote for that: I can see that there are several parts to this, so it could well be

@percusse close enough

@Rico You draw a thick line then you put two nodes at each end via pos keys. Then you use sloped key so that they are rotated tangential to the path. But then you rotate 90 degrees and then you perturb the positioning with above and below
@Kurt If it was to me, I would close half of the unanswered questions right away but might not be a good idea.
@JosephWright Is this true ?

Q: SourceForge has a new owner and now adware and malware might get bundled up with software hosted there

henryThis is not a question, but I wanted to "alert" the community to the issue anway. The issue is, as far as I understood it: software from SourceForge might only be available with adware or malware in the future, it's already the case for Filezilla. It is depicted in its full glory on reddit. Not ...

Then I would rewrite the title because this is serious stuff

@percusse ok seems legit just a bit annotations and I'm done

@Rico I have to say that was a nice achievement in such a short time. Well done

6:05 PM
@percusse Not sure: have not tested and doesn't seem to picked up by the bigger tech news sites

@percusse if 2 hours are short time :D

@percusse Yes this one I would aclose too.

@Rico relativity.
@JosephWright I would doubt they would do such a career suicide move

@percusse My feeling too: would not take long to get serious action

@percusse :D

6:08 PM
Could do with some help getting ideas across in tex.stackexchange.com/questions/130050/… (and chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/10308/…)

6:18 PM

exact replica :)

@percusse the problem now is, that I have to much space at the left, need to crop it some how

@Rico Did you put an empty node or something else? standalone should crop it correctly

@percusse no the size comes from the backgroundimage which has the legend on the left side

you can add trim options to the includegraphics
hmm let me see where qrr did that
@Rico so in the second option of nodescope add this [width=.9\textwidth,trim=0 120 160 0,clip]{rico.png}, I'm not remembering which number is which side of the picture but play with those numbers. The order is I guess, left bottom right top

6:24 PM
ok ill try that ill added a compass to the left though

Or just remove the picture completely
since you are replicating it

@percusse if i remove it completely i get this:

@Rico :-) That's strange

@percusse doesn't look right

But OK then trim it. Should be related to the dimensionless numbers.
@Rico Try something like trim=0 0 150 0 to trim the right side

6:30 PM
@percusse ill try it later thanks for your help! was great fun!

@Rico Likewise. Good luck
For those who are interested in electronic+jazz+.... bah good music check out the following my recent discovery

How can I see a large picture going over the size of the border?
It goes over the end of the page so cannot see it

@hhh You need a larger page. You can also scale the tikzpicture, e.g. \begin{tikzpicture}[scale=0.3], but that doesn't look too good.

hhh
@TorbjørnT. how can I have a larger page/
?

@hhh For just a single page, don't know. For the entire document, e.g. \usepackage[a0paper,landscape]{geometry}.

@hhh remove the geometry package and use standalone class

7:40 PM
@hhh For a longer page you can use \enlargethispage

hhh
8:08 PM
Roger, the page is still a bit hard-reading -- it looks I need to modify the code to make it less packed and less dense.

8:31 PM
@hhh I was simply looking at commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/… and copied that more or less. ;)

1 hour later…
9:31 PM
@percusse ok trimming does not work, this fucks up all coordinates

9:56 PM
@Rico Can you paste your code somewhere? Or use directly Jake's construction for image drawing? I think you scale things somewhere

@Rico It's due to the width=0.9\textwidth part when you trim it it becomes larger
Can you change that too after trimming?

ahh
@Qrrbrbirlbel solved it :)

@Rico Okay ...

@Rico also if you remove nodescope and use \begin{tikzpicture}[scale=10]\sffamily it becomes normal again
Oh OK

10:07 PM
@percusse he did some magic with overlays so the boundingbox is not affected

@Rico Cool.

@percusse :)
