Why does the tikz pkg make things look so bad? The writing goes to the corner instead of middle. What kind of new settings do I need to get it again like the above settings?

@hhh Eh, what? I think the standalone package is at fault. It crops and stuff. You should load TikZ with \usepackage{tikz}.

@Joseph: Yes, I got it working on a clean install via the ready-packaged TL12, but not in production although everything should be exactly the same between the systems. (emphasis on "should", as obviously something isn't the same, I just couldn't figure out what that something is). I have the luatex-plain working on the production machine, so I'm going to use that.

but according to luaotfload.pdf I should be able to use font-loading syntax :color=HHEEXX, but for some reason it isn't working for me.

@hhh IMHO, separating each diagram in its own compilable input file is a good practice. Compile it to get a PDF output and you can import it in your main input file as an image. The main input file should be compiled with PDFLATEX to make use of the good feature of some packages that are only available for PDFLATEX.

@hhh: For diagrams created in PSTricks code, you have two options, compiling them with latex-dvips-ps2pdf sequence (faster) or with xelatex (much slower).

@hhh: There is another way of course by mixing the diagram with the text in a single input file which is usually compiled with pdflatex. But you need to load auto-pst-pdf package and compile the input file with pdflatex -shell-escape inputfilename. I don't like this way for sure.

So in your input file you can import the image with \includegraphics[<option>]{some-specific-name-for-a-diagram}.

@PauloCereda Just figured that I wanted a basic string library in arara. I want to simultaneously compile lecture.beamer.2013-08-27.tex and lecture.handout.2013-08-27.tex. One catch is that these files are both symlinks to lectures.tex, as are many other files, so I can't specifically specify the filename to compile in the arara directive. So what I'd like is a rule that takes the file name and does some basic manipulation (replaces beamer by handout).

I can do this by some horrendous combination of getBasename and getFileType, or by farming it out to a shell, but I figure this ought to be easy enough inside arara if the right functions are exposed.

@AndrewStacey Do you have a rule? We can exploit some methods from the Java string library. :)

@PauloCereda I don't have a rule as such, but it would be basically the xelatex one with sending @{file} through a string substitutor, something like strsub(@{file},"beamer","handout").

@PauloCereda At the moment the word beamer is hard-coded. It would be nice to be able to specify that via the directive as well. Say, format: beamer handout (or replace: beamer handout would be a better name for that).

@AndrewStacey Sorry, I'm quite slow today. :) Every parameter you use in the directive is added to a map, like a bag of key=value pairs. This is reflected in the parameters variable name in the rule context. I think you can add a rule argument named foo in the rule which won't do anything, but you can exploit parameters.foo in other arguments.

Without the format argument then I can't use the format parameter in the directive. Without a texfile parameter in the directive then the texfile argument doesn't get processed.

@texenthusiast The thing to be careful of is that normally you can be quite free with white space in picture mode, but the color specials may interfere with white space removal so you may need % at ends of lines. But really if generating the graph from gnuplot why use picture mode, that has the advantage (over a scalable format) of not having any tex driver dependencies but if you add color that goes. why not generate eps or tikz orsomething

How do I install a missing style?

I am trying to compile a document and it keeps saying ! LaTeX Error: File mathgifg.sty' not found.`

So I found it here: ctan.org/tex-archive/fonts/mathgifg

But putting those files in the directory doesn't help

@Dan It doesn't quite work that way. TeX needs to place certain files in certain places and that's a little nontrivial
