Why does the tikz pkg make things look so bad? The writing goes to the corner instead of middle. What kind of new settings do I need to get it again like the above settings?

@hhh Eh, what? I think the standalone package is at fault. It crops and stuff. You should load TikZ with \usepackage{tikz}.
@hhh Do not use standalone for your real document (at least not for the main document).

9:31 AM
Any LuaTeX'ers around?

@morbusg Depends how complex the question is!
@morbusg By the way, what happened with XeTeX/OpenBSD? It sounded as if you got it working on an 'alternative' installation but couldn't move it to your production system

@Joseph: Yes, I got it working on a clean install via the ready-packaged TL12, but not in production although everything should be exactly the same between the systems. (emphasis on "should", as obviously something isn't the same, I just couldn't figure out what that something is). I have the luatex-plain working on the production machine, so I'm going to use that.
but according to luaotfload.pdf I should be able to use font-loading syntax :color=HHEEXX, but for some reason it isn't working for me.
(I'm using the luatex-plain built with these instructions: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/105869/… )

@morbusg Ah, the fun of luaoftload

@Joseph :-) Yeah, I'm not actually sure if it's the luaotfload that the luatex-plain format is using, or something simpler.

@Qrrbrbirlbel When should I use the standalone pkg?

@hhh For answers on TeX.sx :D (By the way, you use it as a class, there also exist the related standalone package.)
But seriously, check the tag for some ideas. It can be used to externalize various things.

10:10 AM
@hhh It's for making an image cropped to just the minimum amount of space for the fragment being typeset.

@DavidCarlisle That's the class.

@TorbjørnT. which is what's being used in the image above (although you were right I wasn't making a distinction, never actually used either:-)

@DavidCarlisle Oops, you're right.

hhh
@DavidCarlisle ok, thank you for the information.

@hhh For more information, see also the manual (e.g. texdoc.net/pkg/standalone). It discusses both package and class.

Can someone understand why this is not getting compiled?

@hhh You are using a version of expl3 that doesn't have the correct functions available
We update on CTAN regularly, and there have been some name 'tidy ups' over time

hhh
I am using TeXShop, how can I get the newest version?
Would it make sense to buy Texpad or does it keep things uptodate?

@hhh Well you seem to have TeX Live 2012, so you'll have to manually install: grab l3kernel.tds.zip and l3packages.tds.zip from CTAN
@hhh Editor is nothing to do with your TeX system
@hhh I'd probably just update to MacTeX 2013
Install-ready ZIP files are in ctan.org/tex-archive/install/macros/latex/contrib on CTAN
Unzip in ~/Library/texmf (Mac)

@hhh Yes, that's MacTeX 2013

hhh
10:37 AM
@JosephWright do I need to uninstall the old packages or does it replace them automatically?

@hhh No, each MacTeX release is independent: you can have more than one installed in parallel
@hhh You can switch using the TeX entry in System Properties
Where's @egreg when I need him?

hhh
11:15 AM
@JosephWright Thank you, I got it working :)
Is there some elegant way to make the tikz images side-by-side or make some sort of table about them with headings such as vertices, degree and the amount of edges?

@Papiro I see -- next time, got it the other way (downloading from the website) working.
Thank you for the info!

@hhh You're welcome!

11:51 AM
@Papiro I have now two TeXShop running, any idea how to remove the second one? They are both of the same version...

A good article for today: independent.co.uk/news/science/… :-)

@PSTikZ Even the flying spaghetti monster? :)

@PauloCereda I don't know. But I trust the research result.

@PSTikZ Which makes you a believer. :)

@PauloCereda I am not a believer.

hhh
12:00 PM
Could someone explain how to get this code here running in TeXShop 2013 on OS X?

@hhh Oh no, there's arara in there!
:)

hhh
arara?

@hhh arara is @PauloCereda's parrot.

hhh
err github.com/cereda/arara I want to get it just compiled

@hhh There are directives for a program named arara (my fault, my fault) which tells the compilation chain; in that case, it will be latex, dvips and ps2pdf. :)
@DavidCarlisle <3

hhh
12:03 PM
I can include them with "\usepackage{dvips}"?
(I cannot yet understand why I would install the arara, is there an easy way not to and get the code working without it?)

@hhh: Do the following from your terminal:
latex filename
dvips filename
ps2pdf -dAutoRotatePages=/None filename.ps
Or you can make a batch file that accept a single filename without extension.

hhh
@PSTikZ yes but I have no commandline version of latex/pdflatex yet...

@hhh Why?
They should be available out of the box.

hhh
Really? Or do I need to install it from Homebrew brew.sh ?

@hhh: Yes. TeXShop 2013 should provide us with the command line version as well by default.

hhh
12:09 PM
@PSTikZ Well there is no aliases created on my commandline

@hhh texshop is just an editor it must be calling the standard commandline pdflatex etc, but perhaps they are not in your standard path

hhh
@PSTikZ I have now pdflatex after fixing the path but the alias to latex missing...
export PATH=$PATH:/usr/texbin/

<-- this fixed the pdflatex in ~/.profile
@PauloCereda Is it easy to get Arara working in OSX?

@hhh Do you have MacTeX? :)

hhh
Yes tug.org/mactex/2013, 2013 version.

So you already have arara. :)
Now we need to configure it in TeXShop.

hhh
12:20 PM
@PauloCereda how do you configure it? My goal is to get this arara thing working here.

@hhh egreg has written a guide (in Italian) on how to configure arara and TeXShop. Let me check the steps.

@hhh: You can use xelatex to compile PSTricks code. Make sure you have set the path to xelatex.

@PSTikZ That's a good plan too. :)

hhh
@PSTikZ Path? which path? Some oneliner to .profile?

@hhh Make a test first whether or not xelatex is available.

hhh
12:23 PM
@PSTikZ yes it is, found it on commandline

@hhh Then you don't need to set its path to the system variable.

hhh
It did this with XeLatex but it did not complie and the graph missing some edges
@PSTikZ Do you have the steps in English?

@hhh I got the same problem with xelatex.
latex-dvips-ps2pdf is the best compilation steps in my experience.

@PSTikZ let me try....

Do again the following with xelatex and you will get the correct result.
\documentclass[border=3pt,preview]{standalone}
\usepackage{pst-node}
\begin{document}
\begin{psmatrix}[mnode=circle,colsep=0.8,rowsep=0.8]
& [name=8] 8 \\[-0.4\psyunit]
[name=5] 5 & [name=6] 6 & [name=7] 7\\
[name=2] 2 & [name=3] 3 & [name=4] 4\\[-0.4\psyunit]
& [name=1] 1
\ncline{8}{5}\ncline{8}{6}\ncline{8}{7}
\ncline{5}{3}\ncline{5}{2}
\ncline{6}{2}\ncline{6}{4}
\ncline{7}{3}\ncline{7}{4}
\ncline{1}{2}\ncline{1}{3}\ncline{1}{4}
\ncline[offset=5pt, linewidth=0.5\pslinewidth, arrows=->, nodesep=5pt]{1}{2}

12:31 PM
@hhh Two TeXShop?? Well... there is a free application called AppCleaner available at freemacsoft.net

@hhh, @PSTikZ I get bad result here too with xelatex (cygwin tl2013)

@DavidCarlisle See my code above. Now it works with a correct output.

@PSTikZ yes but what did you change is this a known issue or an unreported bug?

@DavidCarlisle Because pstricks option in standalone is for pspicture rather than for psmatrix I think. I don't know whether it is a known issue or a bug.

@TorbjørnT. ah.
@PSTikZ We could get @JosephWright to ping Martin and Herbert and let them fight it out...

12:38 PM
@DavidCarlisle OK. @martinscharrer, @herbert care to give your opinion on the point above about standalone/PSTricks?

@PSTikZ I moved your contribution here so we don't get it lost. Feel free to make it your answer if yo want :)
(or used your work there and referred to this chat)

@Papiro you've changed colour

@hhh I think editing the existing one is more than enough. I did it. :-)

hhh
12:46 PM
I still need to get the nodes of the same size, scale did not work other?

@JosephWright Interestingly, Sony didn't mention the price for Brazil. I'm expecting an insanely expensive console. And to be honest, I'm quite surprised PS4 will be launched in Nov 29 for us as well. :) As an example, Wii U is not yet officially released in here.
@JosephWright: my guess: around €768

hhh
@PSTikZ do you know whether it is possible to specify the node size to something like 1 inch?

@hhh Please give me a time to find the option. I think there is an option to change the radius.

@frankmittelbach seems to be on a retagging spree :-)

@JosephWright Frank probably has a Nintendo 3DS. :)
@David probably has a PSVita.

hhh
12:55 PM
@PSTikZ got it working, it was the radius option. Thank you :)

@hhh OK. Good!

hhh
:)
@PSTikZ do you know whether it is possible to combine this to LaTex document that is not getting compiled with XeLatex? (I have no idea about the difference btw LaTex and XeLatex) ...or should I include this as an image or some easy way to get it working with LaTex compiler?

@DavidCarlisle Yes ;)

@hhh IMHO, separating each diagram in its own compilable input file is a good practice. Compile it to get a PDF output and you can import it in your main input file as an image. The main input file should be compiled with PDFLATEX to make use of the good feature of some packages that are only available for PDFLATEX.
@hhh: For diagrams created in PSTricks code, you have two options, compiling them with latex-dvips-ps2pdf sequence (faster) or with xelatex (much slower).

hhh
@PSTikZ So I create a Pictures directory for pictures and lib directory for codes to generate the images, right?
Or better naming conventions?

1:08 PM
@hhh: There is another way of course by mixing the diagram with the text in a single input file which is usually compiled with pdflatex. But you need to load auto-pst-pdf package and compile the input file with pdflatex -shell-escape inputfilename. I don't like this way for sure.

hhh
@PSTikZ Hey I am more hedonist, choosing the simpler way :P
(not big problem: anyway compiling faster the larger file when not generating images on the fly)

@hhh If you don't want to reuse your diagrams for other projects, just create a sub folder (named it as Images for example) in the folder in which your main input file exists.

hhh
@PSTikZ I have never decided whether I should use the word Images or Pictures
Also for this kind of code snippets I could use also the bin directory?! Bin or Lib dir?
Bin=binary, not this one.

So in your input file you can import the image with \includegraphics[<option>]{some-specific-name-for-a-diagram}.

hhh
Lib=Library, this one better?

1:13 PM
@hhh: All input files for your diagrams can be put in the Images folder for the sake of simplicity.
@hhh Naming is up to you.
@hhh: Don't forget to call \graphicspath{{Images/}} at the preamble to make sure \includegraphics can find your diagram ini Images folder.

@PauloCereda Just figured that I wanted a basic string library in arara. I want to simultaneously compile lecture.beamer.2013-08-27.tex and lecture.handout.2013-08-27.tex. One catch is that these files are both symlinks to lectures.tex, as are many other files, so I can't specifically specify the filename to compile in the arara directive. So what I'd like is a rule that takes the file name and does some basic manipulation (replaces beamer by handout).
I can do this by some horrendous combination of getBasename and getFileType, or by farming it out to a shell, but I figure this ought to be easy enough inside arara if the right functions are exposed.

@AndrewStacey Do you have a rule? We can exploit some methods from the Java string library. :)

@PauloCereda I don't have a rule as such, but it would be basically the xelatex one with sending @{file} through a string substitutor, something like strsub(@{file},"beamer","handout").
@PauloCereda So can I use the string library already? I looked in the manual (I know, bad idea!) but couldn't see any hint of being allowed to use something like that.

@AndrewStacey It's a can of worms actually, but you can. :) Gimme a minute, I'll give you an example. :)
@AndrewStacey:
@{file.replace("beamer", "handout")}
It should work, I guess. :)

What was the package to be included so that [h!] works i.e. place the image precisely there in the order?

@PSTikZ He, I did that edit myself a few seconds ago :)

@hhh: Follow this answer: tex.stackexchange.com/a/8633/19356

1:39 PM
@PauloCereda At the moment the word beamer is hard-coded. It would be nice to be able to specify that via the directive as well. Say, format: beamer handout (or replace: beamer handout would be a better name for that).
@PauloCereda Incidentally, it would seem that a parameter has to have the same name as an argument of the eventual command. So I can't have an argument, say texfile, that doesn't correspond to a particular parameter passed in but which, say, uses two of the parameters to decide what it will become.

@AndrewStacey I think the parameters map is available with its full power. You can use it in there too.

@PauloCereda Whoa! I understood every word of that, just not when combined into a sentence. What is a "parameters map" and how do I get one? Will there be a pot of gold at the end of it?

1:54 PM
@AndrewStacey Sorry, I'm quite slow today. :) Every parameter you use in the directive is added to a map, like a bag of key=value pairs. This is reflected in the parameters variable name in the rule context. I think you can add a rule argument named foo in the rule which won't do anything, but you can exploit parameters.foo in other arguments.
Oh my, that doesn't make any sense either, does it?
I think I'll rewrite your rule as an example. :P

@AndrewStacey: you want something deliciously evil? :)

Without the format argument then I can't use the format parameter in the directive. Without a texfile parameter in the directive then the texfile argument doesn't get processed.
@PauloCereda What else? I guess I could put the code all in the command bit, but then that just looks messy.

@AndrewStacey: Totally untested:
!config

Always use <from> to <to>

@PauloCereda So that if format isn't given then it drops back to using file.

Just sounds like opening two files to me

@JosephWright See the demo in the video link inside Q
@JosephWright yes, but side by side where one is only readable, nothing great though

@texenthusiast I did watch the video: all I saw was two windows tiled, so really don't see how this can be tricky
Certainly easy enough in TeXworks :-)

@JosephWright yes i don't use often but some people would like it

The way the question reads, is it a feature request for TeXstudio ('import' functionality => alter binary => not a TeX question)?

@JosephWright TeXworks is really the best for everyone newbie's to experts and largely scalable with built in scripts for power users.

3:54 PM
@texenthusiast I certainly like it

@JosephWright In Texmaker you can view two documents side by side in the same window. In TeXstudio you can't, though there seems to a flag for being able to open multiple TeXstudio windows (sourceforge.net/p/texstudio/discussion/907839/thread/e1e82bc3)

@JosephWright very clear precise feature request for TeXstudio, but I don't know what to do on it

@TorbjørnT. So a feature request?
@texenthusiast Feature requests for editors are off-topic as we can't answer them
Or at least that has tended to be the position

@JosephWright I think so. Could always answer 'no, not possible, but you can open two windows with ...'

@JosephWright Ok good, no worries , agree

@DavidCarlisle Affleck is Scotish, I guess. :)

@egreg good job you can't delete answers for having typing errors.
@PauloCereda wikipedia says he's American

@DavidCarlisle for example latex picture environment is generated with \put , \mulitput's when exported via latex terminal in this Q, may be if we can tweak the exported.tex file to add color we can get the colors into graph, I am wondering how it can be done

@DavidCarlisle Is he? Oh my. I thought his accent sounds more UK-like. :)

@texenthusiast \color{blue}\line{1,1) {10} will make a blue line
@PauloCereda Benjamin Géza Affleck-Boldt, better known as Ben Affleck, is an American actor, film director, producer, and screenwriter.

@DavidCarlisle Oh.

4:54 PM
@PauloCereda always believe in wikipedia

@DavidCarlisle ok

@DavidCarlisle Wikipedia is accurate [citation needed]. :)

@texenthusiast The thing to be careful of is that normally you can be quite free with white space in picture mode, but the color specials may interfere with white space removal so you may need % at ends of lines. But really if generating the graph from gnuplot why use picture mode, that has the advantage (over a scalable format) of not having any tex driver dependencies but if you add color that goes. why not generate eps or tikz orsomething

@DavidCarlisle SX should add a spelling corrector, so we could finally get rid of ”colour” and “metre”. ;-)

@DavidCarlisle: Wikipedia is creepy sometimes: "Affleck has English, Irish, German, Scottish, French, and Swedish ancestry."

@egreg well firefox has one of those but it complains about color (here)
@PauloCereda That proves he's American

@DavidCarlisle 'Murica! :)

@DavidCarlisle They don't know how to make a spelling corrector.

@egreg we could get @PauloCereda to ask Ben Affleck how to spell colo[u]r. That should confirm his origins.

Q: Using the erdc package on Mac OS X

Matthew RankinI have the MacTeX-2012 Distribution installed on my MacBook Pro running OS X 10.8.3 Mountain Lion. Opening TeX Live Update, I see that the erdc package is installed. However, as stated erdc.pdf, mathgifg is required to provide access to Microsoft Georgia and ITC Franklin Gothic fonts, but mathgif...

Then hopefully a .dtx file would make more sense

@percusse thanks - and this is the exact template I'm trying to load ;)

Hi! I would never think that someone is able to use the notation :R: (colon bracket) for something. Arrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

@tohecz Hey Tom! :)

@PauloCereda Hi!
@PauloCereda How do you do?

@tohecz In a hurry these days, but fine. :) And you?

@PauloCereda I'm enjoying my time at home, until I go to several places and end in Paris again :)

Q: Problem with scaling used in \includegraphics

Jun LiuI have a question on scaling a graph when the graph is included using \includegraphics. A code snippet is below. \documentclass{article} \usepackage{tikz} \usepackage{pgfplots} \usepackage{pgfplotstable} \usepackage{tikzscale} \usetikzlibrary{external} \tikzexternalize %\tikzset{external/mode=...

@Dan Could you give more detail, e.g. exactly what you did do. Also, I don't see the need for separate Windows and Mac questions (other than the location of the local tree things are much the same)

@Dan Do you have access to the actual fonts?
From the mathgifg documentation (section 2 Installation, p 2):
> Due to legal constraints we do not include Type 1 fonts in the
distribution; you need either to buy them, or to create them yourself if you have
the fonts in the TrueType (TTF) formats.

Are there really no constants for bool true/false in expl3?

@SeanAllred What do you mean? \c_true_bool and \c_false_bool are constants :-)

@JosephWright So I was going crazy. Thanks :)
Somehow I missed it when I was searching through the docs.

@DavidCarlisle: I never used \mathbin. :)
It's just that the OP requested a macro.
Also, there is no need for the enclosed math mode switch, since \mathrel should take care of the spacing.

@Werner well thanks for the hint anyway, either would be better than mathop :) (Doing whatthe OP asks
@Werner but you might get a different character (you don't in the cm math setup but in general there is no reason why = in the current font should be same as = in the math font

@DavidCarlisle Yes, be super cautious... you never know.

@Werner or rather I do know that they are almost always different:-)
