@percusse I guess it's bound to failure anyway: each directive is executed in its own subshell, I believe.
One could think of adding a prefix before the main command: TEXINPUTS=<path> pdflatex file works as desired, at least on Unix systems (and assuming the default shell is sh based)

@egreg, I didn't realize that each directive ran in a subshell. I could imagine customizing the pdflatex rule as you say, but I think this would still require me to be able to set an environment variable.

@egreg I think I figured out what causes the "problem". I think arara checks that the command exists with something like which. Since shell builtins don't exist in a which sense, arara panics and throws an error.

@DanielE.Shub: sorry for being late. :( @egreg is right, commands are issued in stateless subshells (@percusse would say, it's a "what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" philosophy). :) And you are right too, arara checks for the existence of a command; a command beginning with TEXINPUTS makes arara panic indeed (it's not a proper command but a feature of the underlying shell). I'm really curious on @Heiko's suggestion, it seems like a cool approach!
On a second thought, we have two commands in one line, I'm sure arara will like it.

@egreg Ei is egg ui is onion and Duvel is a beer. You cannot believe how subtle the difference. I can never get it correctly.
But my top performance when I first arrive here was continuosly asking for meat from the bartenders... Fles -> bottle, vlees -> meat. Dutch claim that there is a difference between their F,V and W :)
And fles is pronounced as flesh but meat is pronounced as f-leeys.

The most recent replies to most questions are a couple of years old and I was wondering if there was any news in this area. @percusse @GonzaloMedina @egreg 'Eijkhout' is pronounced [ɛikhɔut] (IPA as predicted/requested by @PauloCereda) Dutch has only three real diphthongs, /ɛi/ /œy/ and /ɔu/. They're easy to represent but hard to pronounce. The middle one is the real killer since it's a transition between two front rounded vowels (if you speak French, it's probably not so hard). The first one is also hard for English speakers since we have /eɪ/ which is close, but not the same.
I don't know enough about variation in Dutch, but I think the /ɔu/ diphthong has a bit of variation to it, probably [ʌu] as well as [ɔu].
