@egreg Congratulations on 1000 bronze badges (I have just voted on an answer of you to get you the missing "Nice Answer" badge).

9:01 AM
@HeikoOberdiek Thanks!

@egreg The layout of the profile page needs an update. I get a line break between the badge symbol and the number.

Huh? I downvoted an answer and got a -1 in reputation. I thought downvotes no longer cost anything.

@HeikoOberdiek The revtex4-1 class uses \p@subsection and so on; doing \renewcommand{\thesubsection}{...} won't work with \ref
@AndrewStacey It's downvoting questions that doesn't cost

@egreg Ah, I see. And I guess the amount was adjusted from -2 to -1. The answer was definitely worth a downvote so I don't really mind

@AndrewStacey It wasn't one of mine, as my rep is still with a final 2. ;-)

10:00 AM
@PauloCereda Reception please

Q: Setting environment variable with arara

Daniel E. ShubI wanted to set my TEXINPUTS environment variable from with an arara rule/directive. For example my texinputs.yaml rule is !config identifier: texinputs name: texinputs #command: export TEXINPUTS="@{dirs}:$TEXINPUTS:" command: export TEXINPUTS="@{mypaths}$TEXINPUTS:" arguments: - identifier: myp...

So I think we can't search the deleted questions is that still right?

@percusse I guess it's bound to failure anyway: each directive is executed in its own subshell, I believe.
One could think of adding a prefix before the main command: TEXINPUTS=<path> pdflatex file works as desired, at least on Unix systems (and assuming the default shell is sh based)

10:32 AM
@egreg Let's see some @PauloCereda Java magic :)

11:06 AM
@egreg, I didn't realize that each directive ran in a subshell. I could imagine customizing the pdflatex rule as you say, but I think this would still require me to be able to set an environment variable.

@DanielE.Shub Commands issued by programs are executed in a subshell of the main login shell (or something like this); export makes the variable available in all child processes of the shell where the command is executed, not to all the running shells.
@DanielE.Shub Oh, and you don't want to add $TEXINPUTS, unless you have already set it in your environment; a trailing : is sufficient as in export TEXINPUTS=<path>:

11:21 AM
@egreg I tried copying and modifying pdflatex.yaml to command: <arara> TEXINPUTS=.//:$TEXINPUT pdflatex @{action} @{draft} @{shell} @{synctex} @{options} "@{file}" and still get a similar error. Do you know if arara uses a bash shell?

11:42 AM
@DanielE.Shub It seems that our arara guru and master is sleeping late, today. ;-)

@egreg I think I figured out what causes the "problem". I think arara checks that the command exists with something like which. Since shell builtins don't exist in a which sense, arara panics and throws an error.

12:37 PM
@DanielE.Shub @DanielE.Shub You can use the command env, the rule becomes: <arara> env "TEXINPUTS=.//:" pdflatex @{action} @{draft} @{shell} @{synctex} @{options} "@{file}"

@MatthewLeingang Was just looking at a book on Amazon and in the product review was a quote from a certain Matthew Leingang (product review, not user reviews). Small world.

12:57 PM
Sorry guys, I'm late for the party! :)

@PauloCereda Hello

@JosephWright :)
@DanielE.Shub: sorry for being late. :( @egreg is right, commands are issued in stateless subshells (@percusse would say, it's a "what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" philosophy). :) And you are right too, arara checks for the existence of a command; a command beginning with TEXINPUTS makes arara panic indeed (it's not a proper command but a feature of the underlying shell). I'm really curious on @Heiko's suggestion, it seems like a cool approach!
On a second thought, we have two commands in one line, I'm sure arara will like it.

1:18 PM
@PauloCereda @DanielE.Shub Here's my attempt using Heiko's suggestion:
% arara: mypdflatex
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage[margin=.2cm]{geometry}

\usepackage{verbatim}
\begin{document}
\footnotesize
\verbatiminput{mypdflatex.yaml}

\end{document}

@HeikoOberdiek @PauloCereda the env works in the simplest case where TEXINPUTS is not set prior to calling arara, but I cannot get it to work with something like "TEXINPUTS=.//:$TEXINPUTS", which I consider a more general solution. I bet there is a way to pipe things around to get it to work

This loads the file because I added the arara/rules directory, as it's visible from the output:

@DanielE.Shub Ah I see. I'll try to investigate.
@egreg: can I ask you a math question?

@PauloCereda Of course!

Working on the next expl3 feature request :-)

1:30 PM
@egreg Thanks. :) First of all sorry for being a math newbie. :)
@egreg: I have an arbitrary number of sets, A, B, C... , and I would like to get a_1 b_1 c_1 ..., a_2 b_2 c_2 ..., and so on. Can I say I have a resulting set of ordered tuples?

@PauloCereda Meanwhile I discovered that a question on Math.SE has been closed as "too localized". The question has 10 upvotes and 6 answers with a total of 62 upvotes. My answer received another upvote today. They're crazy.

@egreg Oh my. :)

@PauloCereda Invent your own Cartesian product. My suggestion for the notation is

@PauloCereda What should a_1 be?

@egreg The first element of the A set.

1:35 PM
@PauloCereda Sets don't have a first element

@egreg Ouch.
@percusse LOL

@PauloCereda But the set of ordered tuples (what a bad term) is simply A\times B\times C\times\dotsb

@egreg Ah cool.
I wasn't sure about the mapping.
@egreg: thank you! :)

@PauloCereda More formally, if your sets are indexed by a set I (say` I=\{1,2,\dots,n\}), the set \prod_{i\in I}A_i` is the set of functions f from I to the union \bigcup_{i\in I}A_i such that f(i)\in A_i for all i\in I.

@egreg Wow, that's perfect! Thank you! :)

1:55 PM
@DanielE.Shub @DanielE.Shub @egreg Variables $HOME, $TEXINPUTS in the arara rule are not interpreted by the shell. The value of the environment variable env TEXINPUTS=<value> is passed verbatim. Try \immediate\write18{echo $TEXINPUTS}. However the kpathsea library interprets the variables and then complains about the recursion of $TEXINPUTS.

@HeikoOberdiek Yes, I noticed that.

3:09 PM
@PauloCereda Question 8 doesn't apply to me. The test is invalid.

@egreg C'mon. :)

@PauloCereda My favorite music genres include none of them; what can I do?
If at least there was John Cage or Steve Reich …

@egreg Go with rock. :)

@PauloCereda Too wide.

@egreg Don't select any of them. Go to the next question. :)

4:49 PM
@HeikoOberdiek: Can you confirm this issue: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/124099/…

@MarcoDaniel Confirmed with mdframed 1.8. The CTAN version 1.9b works as expected, see my comment.

@HeikoOberdiek Thanks. You are completely right:

@Marco: do you know what I am coding right now? :)

@PauloCereda song.yaml? ;-)

@MarcoDaniel worse. :) v5 :)

5:05 PM
@PauloCereda Ah song.yaml v5 ;-) -- Great. When will you upload the first alpha version?

@MarcoDaniel Some day. :)

@PauloCereda I can wait for some days ;-)

@MarcoDaniel Do you want a teaser? :)
paths:
- <arara> @{paths.current}/rules

@PauloCereda teaser or taser?

@MarcoDaniel Laser. :)

5:07 PM
@PauloCereda YEAH my closed and now reopened feature request ;-)

@MarcoDaniel That means, in this case, that arara will look for rules in the rules folder from your current location. :)
And guess what, local configuration files as well!

@PauloCereda The environment filecontents becomes more important ;-)

@MarcoDaniel Indeed. :) But a wise man once said, abusus non tollit usum. :)
@MarcoDaniel: you are the camerlengo. When I resign, you'll be in charge of the bird. :)

@PauloCereda What?
@PauloCereda :-)

@MarcoDaniel Latin. :)
Definition of ABUSUS NON TOLLIT USUM
: abuse does not take away use, i.e., is not an argument against proper use

5:18 PM
@PauloCereda I can't speak Latin ;-) ;-)

@MarcoDaniel Neither can I. :) But we do have our LaTiN expert, @egreg. :)
Wow, I can't write LaTiN normally anymore. LaTeX influence. :)
Yay @DavidCarlisle is here!

@PauloCereda The fact that one can improperly uses a thing doesn't make wrong using the thing . A common meaning of ‘abuse’ is more strong than ‘improper use’.

@egreg :)

Said in other words, the fact that somebody smacks a frying pan on somebody else's head, doesn't imply that frying pans should be banished.

@jokerdino: ooh hi there mr. dinosaur! :)

Hello!
It was flagged by a 7k repper on Tex.SE.

@jokerdino I think the OP has either an outdated version or the TL version shipped with Ubuntu might not include media9 (perhaps due to license restriction). I think we can deal with it. :)
Our friend @David needs the rep points. :)

Hey! It's all yours then. :D

5:41 PM
@jokerdino The media9 has always been included in the Debian package texlive-latex-extra, so apt-get install texlive-latex-extra should do.

@egreg Oh no, Debian! Run!
:)
Oh wait, I'm scared with Ubuntu, not Debian...

@egreg Oh hm. It's over to your side now.

@jokerdino If the OP wants to embed cat videos into the PDF, we will beat this guy. :)

I want to know how to do that.
Actually, embedding a gif would be nice enough.

@jokerdino It's a secret. :) The closest we got from a lolcat presentation was this one: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/35027/… :)

5:46 PM
@egreg a comment just perfect for you to answer:-)
@DavidCarlisle I see. Would you discourage using \left, \right in all cases? — Jubobs 9 mins ago

@PauloCereda The day I see my professors use beamers, I'll be happy.
Well, they don't use computers at all. So, that can be a problem.

@jokerdino :)
One of my professors used to write his slides with a marker directly on transparencies. One day he forgot the transparency and wrote directly in the projector glass. :P

@Jubobs \left and \right do have their uses; in my documents you can surely find them. The fact is that most of the times I see them in others' input, they are misused. — egreg 1 min ago

@PauloCereda wow projectors in lecture theatres. So modern.

@DavidCarlisle :)

5:51 PM
@PauloCereda For the joy of the janitors!

@egreg Indeed! :)

@PauloCereda And a trumpet concerto by Johann Baptist Georg Neruda in the background. ;-)

@egreg ooh! :)

Johann Baptist Georg Neruda (Czech: ',  – ) was a classical Czech composer. Relative to other composers of the Classical music era Neruda is little known, and his dates of birth and death (taken from the Grove Dictionary) are only approximations. He was born in Bohemia, now part of the Czech Republic, to a well-respected musical family. After spending his earlier years gaining a good reputation as a violinist and conductor in Prague and Germany, Neruda became Konzertmeister of the Dresden court orchestra. His compositional output includes eighteen symphonies, fourteen instrum...
Jan Křtitel Jiří Neruda, as @tohecz would write. ;-)
It's a very beautiful piece. Maybe not at the heights of Haydn's or Hummel's concertos of the same period, but interesting indeed.

Hello, I would like to ask if anybody present is using the vim editor with the vim-latex plugin under Windows and might be inclined to share his/her .vimrc . I am trying to pick up some tips, while switching from emacs to vim.

@option_select Hello! Although I use vim, I'm not into the vim-latex plugin. I think @HarishKumar can give you some pointers on his setup. :)

@option_select Is apostasy a crime? In this case it should be. ;-)

@egreg LOL

@egreg I am sinning against IGnucius ^^
@PauloCereda Do you use any other LaTeX plugin for your vim?

@option_select No, plain vim. :)

7:24 PM
@option_select Repent, or I'll call the Spanish Inquisition! ;-)

@egreg I'd expect that!
@PauloCereda Wow, ok...

@option_select Pentiti, scellerato!
@option_select This is what the Commendatore says to Don Giovanni in the last scene of Mozart's opera.
Repent, you sinner! One of my favorite lines.

@egreg Well, I wouldn't know. I am uncultured or popular cultured. Now you can throw me into the fire ;)

@option_select The wood is under the stake, if you please to come.

@DavidCarlisle LOL

7:37 PM
argh
it can't be that hard to make a beamer presentation with latex
argh problems with ampersand
wait wait wait why is \begin{Lemma} defined in the beamer class even though I didn'T define it anywhere?

7:56 PM
@DominicMichaelis Because beamer predefines some of those environments; section 12.4

@egreg Did you need to look up at least ? :)

@DominicMichaelis Yes, I looked for "Satz" because I remembered the fact in general (there has been a question a couple of days ago).

8:11 PM
@DominicMichaelis I wouldn't have arrived at 200K if I had lost time in reading beamer's and TikZ's manuals.

@egreg oh congratulation for the 200 k :)
when did you get the unicorn picture ?

@DominicMichaelis Unicorn?

@DominicMichaelis Unicorn?!

Jeff Atwood on September 01, 2010

Have you ever wondered what happens when you reach 200,000 reputation?

Just ask Jon Skeet.

Apparently, what happens is … you get a painting of unicorns, signed by us, dedicated to you.

Estimated value? Priceless!

Joel and I actually sat down with Mr. Skeet himself to record Stack Overflow podcast #72 during the London leg of DevDays — in the very Google offices pictured here.

Although we sometimes joke that Stack Overflow was accidentally constructed as the ultimate Jon Skeet honeypot, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that Jon has a long history of answering people’s  …

@egreg So you should get a unicorn painting

@DominicMichaelis Waiting for it, then…

8:17 PM
You acutally didn't know that ?

@DominicMichaelis No, I didn't.
But that's from three years ago. SE has changed.
I'll let people know if it happens!

ok great :)
Is there a congratulations post on meta ?

@DominicMichaelis Better! tex.blogoverflow.com/?blb=1

@codinghorror, @spolsky: Do you guys still give unicorn paintings to 200k users? We have a winner at TeX.sx. :)

@egreg That is awesome

@DominicMichaelis Paulo is awesome!

@egreg In beamer I can uncover \items of a enumerate via some clicks, can I do the same with arrows in a commutative diagram?

@DominicMichaelis I believe so, if you use tikz-cd; but I never tried.

@egreg jupp it works :D

@DominicMichaelis It should work with the right setup.

8:36 PM
some more {} and everything works :D

@DominicMichaelis Not surprising …
Quote of the day @DavidCarlisle @egreg:
Hang on I'll get egreg to answer that:-) — David Carlisle 3 hours ago

@DavidCarlisle Meanwhile, Heiko has answered.

@PauloCereda I believe @codinghorror has left the building...

@Brent.Longborough Yep, but he's still influent. :)

8:40 PM
@egreg we should downvote him:-)

@PauloCereda Ah. Quem sabe sabe. Obedece quem tiver juizo...

@Brent.Longborough Quando a esmola é muita, o santo desconfia. :)

@PauloCereda :-)

@DavidCarlisle Is this another one where the fix to longtable would help?

Q: Bottom margin overflow while using a figure and a table

innotuneI'm using Markdown and Pandoc to create Latex PDF Documents. In the progress I encountered a margin overflow. I could reduce the problem to a small example file. mh i can cover (and uncover) the nodes but not the arrows -.-

8:46 PM
@DominicMichaelis Example?

@egreg just looking now (but I set of a tlmgr update just before I saw it so havent tex at the moment) its making the ls-R now...

@egreg give me a minute
\documentclass{beamer}
\usepackage{tikz-cd}
\begin{document}
\begin{frame}
\[
\begin{tikzcd}[ampersand replacement=\&]
{\uncover<2->{a \arrow{r}{e}}} \& b
\end{tikzcd}
\]
\end{frame}
\end{document}

@DominicMichaelis Stupid arrows. You could try the following (which is a simple variant of what TeX.sx used many times):
\documentclass{beamer}
\usepackage{tikz-cd}
\tikzset{invisible/.code={\only<#1>{\pgfkeysalso{opacity=0}}}}
\begin{document}
\begin{frame}\only<2>{}
\[
\begin{tikzcd}[ampersand replacement=\&]
{a \arrow[invisible=1]{r}{e}} \& b
\end{tikzcd}
\]
\end{frame}
\end{document}

I need a solution where I can uncover in 5 steps or even more
got some huge diagrams

@DominicMichaelis It is possible, I guess. Here is the full code:

DanielHere is a less hacky alternative to the answer given by Claudio: In conjunction with TikZ, I have almost stopped completely to use beamer's overlay commands (\visible<>, \only<>, and so on). Or you need to make tikzcd's \arrow macro overlay aware (may be easy, may be difficult).

9:00 PM
for me at least it seems to be impossible :D
But the solution looks good

@egreg yes :(

@DominicMichaelis You can make \arrow overlay aware (at least if <> follows directly \arrow and in that way only the long version (not the short ones like \rar)):
\documentclass{beamer}
\usepackage{tikz-cd}
\tikzset{
  invisible/.style={opacity=0},
  visible on/.style={alt={#1{}{invisible}}},
  alt/.code args={<#1>#2#3}{%
    \alt<#1>{\pgfkeysalso{#2}}{\pgfkeysalso{#3}}%
  },
}
\makeatletter
\renewcommand<>{\tikzcd@arrow}[1][]{%
  \begingroup%
    \if\relax\detokenize{#2}\relax
      \expandafter\@firstoftwo
    \else
      \expandafter\@secondoftwo
    \fi
    {\tikzcd@ar@getdir[#1]}
    {\tikzcd@ar@getdir[#1,visible on={#2}]}
}
\makeatother
\begin{document}
You can also use \arrow<2,4> without the need to add any braces.

How is "Eijkhout" pronounced?

@GonzaloMedina You need to mix an A and an E So let's call it Æ then it is Æyk - haut

@GonzaloMedina Congratulations for having written it correctly, to begin with!

Where is @AlanMunn when we need him ?

@percusse Dutch diphtongs are amazing.

@GonzaloMedina I think it's similar to this:
Apu Nahasapeemapetilon is a fictional character in the animated television series The Simpsons. He is voiced by Hank Azaria and first appeared in the episode "The Telltale Head". Apu is the proprietor of the Kwik-E-Mart, a popular convenience store in Springfield, and a friend of Homer Simpson. He is also an Indian immigrant. @egreg Ei is egg ui is onion and Duvel is a beer. You cannot believe how subtle the difference. I can never get it correctly.
But my top performance when I first arrive here was continuosly asking for meat from the bartenders... Fles -> bottle, vlees -> meat. Dutch claim that there is a difference between their F,V and W :)
And fles is pronounced as flesh but meat is pronounced as f-leeys.

Let's try this one:
Eyjafjallajökull (pronounced ; Icelandic for "Island mountain glacier") is one of the smaller ice caps of Iceland, situated to the north of Skógar and to the west of Mýrdalsjökull. The ice cap covers the caldera of a volcano with a summit elevation of . The volcano has erupted relatively frequently since the last glacial period, most recently in 2010. Geography Eyjafjallajökull consists of a volcano completely covered by an ice cap. The ice cap covers an area of about , feeding many outlet glaciers. The main outlet glaciers are to the north; Gígjökull, flowing into Lónið, and Steinholts...
@percusse: sir online mode. :)

@percusse Thanks.

@GonzaloMedina No problem. It's also Taco HUK Vater in case you need it :) But Hopefully Alan will fix all this heheh.

@percusse expect IPA, sir. IPA everywhere. :)

9:53 PM
@PauloCereda I'm not sure that IPA has enough characters to represent all Dutch diphtongs. ;-)

@egreg Uh-oh. :)

Read IPA while somebody is strangling you it comes pretty close.

@percusse Night, sir! :)

anyone still awake?

@LostBrit Probably.

@Qrrbrbirlbel well, let's see. I was thinking about reopening the debate about tagged / structured PDF's (see e.g. tex.stackexchange.com/questions/579/how-to-create-tagged-pdf). The most recent replies to most questions are a couple of years old and I was wondering if there was any news in this area. So. should I bother, or am I just going to be hit with loads of "possible duplicate" flags?

10:53 PM
@PauloCereda You're the master about this: how many 200K are there in the network?

@PauloCereda Hi Paulo and @open_select, Sure. I will be glad to share my -vimrc. Beyond that, Vim is a chinese character to me :-)

11:13 PM
@percusse @GonzaloMedina @egreg 'Eijkhout' is pronounced [ɛikhɔut] (IPA as predicted/requested by @PauloCereda) Dutch has only three real diphthongs, /ɛi/ /œy/ and /ɔu/. They're easy to represent but hard to pronounce. The middle one is the real killer since it's a transition between two front rounded vowels (if you speak French, it's probably not so hard). The first one is also hard for English speakers since we have /eɪ/ which is close, but not the same.
I don't know enough about variation in Dutch, but I think the /ɔu/ diphthong has a bit of variation to it, probably [ʌu] as well as [ɔu].

11:54 PM
@AlanMunn Thanks, Alan. Do you know if there's an on-line site where I can introduce an IPA string such as "ɛikhɔut" and I hear the pronunciation?
