only six months later, I've finally made the first substantial commits for the 1.0 roadmap. there's still a lot of stuff to do, but at least I pushed through the apathy of doing that first big refactoring that was necessary.
there's one more big refactoring I need, in order to generalise the behaviour of stages, which should allow me extract a lot of common code while also making several features available to many new stages.
after that it's hopefully just adding features until I get bored of it...
