@UlrikeFischer Before I start digging through commits, do you happen to know what change might have caused tex.stackexchange.com/q/703069 ?
@samcarter yes, the definition of \normalcolor has changed (to keep track of the dot color) and if xxcolor is loaded too the patching of \normalcolor pdfrender fails. (very curious patching code in pdfrender ...).
@DavidCarlisle ^^ I think we should use the sword again and move pdfrender out of oberdiek.
@UlrikeFischer Oh, thank you! So for once, beamer is not to blame :)
@samcarter :)

@samcarter well it loads xxcolor which redefines \XC@mcolor so that it now contains \colorlet{XC@mixtmp}{.} and that fails in the preamble. But pdfrender should simply not try to patch \normalcolor like this, it is relying on internals.

@UlrikeFischer Thanks for opening the gh issue!
12:27 PM
@UlrikeFischer ok I'm in a 2 day all company meeting but I can handle later
12:46 PM
@DavidCarlisle I can do it too

1 hour later…
2:14 PM
@UlrikeFischer feel free, I only have sporadic access between talksh
@DavidCarlisle So pass the sword ;-)

@DavidCarlisle I have split up. And I found a (plaintex) bug in ltxcmds. I wonder what that mean for the plaintex usage of pdfrender if nobody complained in three years that it doesn't work ... ;-)
Will tomorrow's newspaper feature an article about a bear with a sword walking through Bonn?

@UlrikeFischer I suspect there is very little plain tex use of any of these, people who want to use plain don't usually want latex-ish packages either
@DavidCarlisle Indeed
@DavidCarlisle yes I think too. But you know what naturally will happen as soon as we remove the plain support from one of them ;-)
@UlrikeFischer yes we need to keep it running, probably eventually it's the latex support that will drop as more stuff gets absorbed into the format
@DavidCarlisle in any case I have splitted both and repaired github.com/ho-tex/pdfrender/issues/1, and can upload tomorrow.
@UlrikeFischer ltxcmds was already split out wasn't it?
9:24 PM
@DavidCarlisle yes, I already sent the update, it was only a small fix.
