@barbarabeeton :P I know

@JosephWright I just saw the bug report. Does that mean that you need to update l3kernel?
@UlrikeFischer Yes - I'm on it
@UlrikeFischer It's in the deprecated part but still needs fixing
@UlrikeFischer I'll also address the oddity with l3bitset
@JosephWright that is what I wanted to ask. ; -). I would be good if disableloading really worked.
@UlrikeFischer It does now, using a stub l3bitset.sty - see mail to team list and checkins. I'm starting on the release process right now
08:02
@UlrikeFischer Some changes from bookmark or pdfmanagement show up in the TOC tests ... fixing that
08:25
@JosephWright sorry I can't look now, I will be away this morning. I made a branch yesterday night where I copied the new pdfmanagement. But didn't check the test results yet.
@UlrikeFischer Key for me is it's definitely not from the l3kernel update (I had to update my TL to get the diffs that GitHub gave), so from a release POV it's OK
E.g.
- << /S /GoTo /D (section.1) >>
+ << /S /GoTo /D (section.1) /SD 103 0 R >>
@JosephWright that is fine. I added support for structure destinations in the bookmarks.
@UlrikeFischer I guessed it was some additional bookmark structure :)
@DavidCarlisle (a) oh no (b) oh no (c) ooh
@JosephWright ah the file found explains why it worked when I tested - I still had the file in the path.
08:38
@JasperHabicht ooh
@Rmano haha
@PauloCereda (b) nah, I think you posted the Canadian one, not the Brits' version.
@Skillmon ooh maple sirup :)
09:01
@UlrikeFischer Exactly
09:12
@JosephWright that is quite a relieve. I wondered what ghosts I had seen
@UlrikeFischer Got the same in the test suite I think for the same reason

Why does `fontenc` seamingly affact the font of the background hook? MWE
\documentclass[a4paper,oneside]{article}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc} % outcomment and TEST is no longer italic
\usepackage{kantlipsum}
\AddToHook{shipout/background}{
\put(10cm,\dimexpr-\paperheight+1cm\relax){\makebox[\textwidth][c]{\Large\bfseries\sffamily TEST}};
}
\begin{document}
\itshape\kant[1-10]
\end{document}
As long as fontenc is enabled TEST is italic. Without it is upright.

ooh gravitational pigs
@daleif It's not really fontenc... without it you get also a warning Font shape OT1/cmss/bx/it undefined using OT1/cmss/bx/n instead on input line 9.
@daleif unrelated to the hook:
LaTeX Font Warning: Font shape `OT1/cmss/bx/it' undefined
(Font) using `OT1/cmss/bx/n' instead on input line 9.
oh @campa said that already:-)
\documentclass[a4paper,oneside]{article}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc} % outcomment and TEST is no longer italic

\begin{document}
{\Large\bfseries\sffamily\itshape TEST}
\end{document}
@daleif ^^
11:22
my bad, then. But why is it affecting the bg hook in the first place? Shouldn't it be unaffected by the text properties at the page break.
@PauloCereda why did it take me so long to get that
@daleif <3
@daleif you can add \normalfont to normalise fonts first (or \reset@font which is what teh page head and foot use)
11:47
@DavidCarlisle I know, my question was more or less why this was not the default in the BG hook?
@daleif not sure:-)
11:58
@DavidCarlisle the infinite shrinkage would go away with the ltmarks-enhancement branch ...
@UlrikeFischer I know:-) but the publisher shoul dfix it anyway (apart from which they overright the entire output routine adding `\topinsert handlineg and balancing columns) so the chance new mark handling works is ..... slim
@DavidCarlisle Frank and me are just discussing empty \special{}. With luatex this give sadly a non-pdf warning. Any idea for something better with it? (I think \write would give empty lines in the log?)
@UlrikeFischer just as non empty whatsit to mess up spacing the same as other whatsits? I use \write in color for that but it does leave a line, in luatex you could generate a custom whatsit node from lua
@DavidCarlisle yes. We had the discussion some time ago (chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/61119122#61119122). It is naturally a bit of a pain to have to do that engine dependant.
@UlrikeFischer you can use \pdfextension literal{} in luatex, in general I suppose l3backend could give you a \c_tex_empty_whatsit or something that always did the right thing (@JosephWright)
@UlrikeFischer or use \(pdf)savepos which is generally available and makes a whatsit node
12:16
@DavidCarlisle Yes, we could
@DavidCarlisle Sounds like a good choice
@JosephWright probably more computationally expensive than an empty special but engine computation probably counts as instant compared to tex expansion?
@DavidCarlisle Yes, and also there is some way to debug it: we'll have a position that it occurs at
12:32
@DavidCarlisle that sounds good.

@Skillmon Feature request for pxpic: A beer mode nordbayern.de/region/bayreuth/… :)
16:18
@samcarter that's in Bayreuth, I used to walk past that brewery. A friend of mine photographed it himself and sent me the picture a few weeks ago :P
@Skillmon I see, I'm way too slow for your information network :)
@samcarter :P but beer-mode would be rather easy to set up, I guess.
@Skillmon maybe the brewery uses your package to plan the images :)
@samcarter I'm not sure how long they already do this, but pxpic is only 2 years old.
17:04
@cfr If you have a moment, is there a way to automate the parent anchor in the btree question? I have the node part names stored in \c_node_names_seq so intuitively it should be possible to extract the node name based on n in the node sequence and then use that name instead of specifying it manually as in the current multi node style.

1 hour later…
18:19
@cfr I figured it out. I need to use \forestoption{n} to access n in a macro.

@AlanMunn @barbarabeeton ooh ^^
@PauloCereda <3
@PauloCereda -- That's very naughty!
cfr
cfr
19:13
@AlanMunn Sorry --- I wasn't here earlier.
@PauloCereda Is there one for the subjunctive? (I'm probably mixing up tenses, though.)
@cfr ooh I can check
@cfr English doesn't have a subjunctive...
@cfr Although the form we get in "I demand that she leave" is often called it.
@cfr No worries. I figured out what I was doing wrong. I'm actually quite pleased with that whole answer now.

2 hours later…
21:09
Does anyone know of a tool that can change the contrast of a pdf? Acrobat Pro probably can, but I don't have that.
@AlanMunn The contrast of pictures?
@mickep Yes, I have some badly scanned images (hand drawn trees) that are quite faint.
@AlanMunn And using ImageMagick to increase the contrast and rerun the file is not possible?
@mickep Ah maybe that would work. There's no rerun of the file; this is work submitted by a student.
@AlanMunn If you save the pages as images, you'll have a much bigger selection of tools. Once they are images, even mac preview should be able to change the contrast.
21:32
@samcarter Thanks. I've managed to improve most. But it's tricky...
@AlanMunn Do you have gimp installed? Instead of increasing the contrast, playing with the gimp colour curves might also be worth a try:
It amazes me that some students can't do something as simple as make a decent scan and add it to their actual document is a mystery.
@samcarter I probably do, but a mixture of qpdf and ImageMagick did what I needed.
@samcarter It just needs to be readable enough to grade.
@AlanMunn Return to student, ask for better copy. :)
@AlanMunn good :)
@AlanMunn You can't grade how nice the splotches of colour look? :P
@mickep Yes, but that would take longer and I need to just get this done
21:41
@AlanMunn I understand that.
22:09
@AlanMunn grade it as 2/100 for being unreadable and avoid all the technical hassle.
@DavidCarlisle Unfortunately (for me, but not the students) I don't do that kind of thing.
@AlanMunn maybe that's why I left acadmia before I got a full time teaching job:-)

Q: The LaTeX Companion, Third Edition

Svend TveskægI'm thinking about putting The LaTeX Companion, Third Edition on my wishlist for Christmas. In this regard I have a few questions: (1) According to https://www.informit.com/store/latex-companion-parts-i-ii-3rd-edition-9780138166489?ranMID=24808 the EPUB version of books isn't yet finished. When w...
