5:24 AM
@Werner, @DavidCarlisle Fix has gone to CTAN this morning

2 hours later…
7:03 AM
@DavidCarlisle I am indeed. But I still don't know how any of it works.
A remediable situation, of course.

7:25 AM
@samcarter_looks_forward_TUG'21 10 % error is not bad for a guess :)

8:07 AM
@Skillmon ... and well within the sqrt(n) error margin :)

@FaheemMitha almost no one needs to know what it's doing internally, but I meant just know that fontspec package defines \setmainfont. That's no different from (say) knowing that amsmath defines align you don't need to know how align works exactly.

@DavidCarlisle I'd welcome thoughts on github.com/josephwright/siunitx/issues/513

8:29 AM
@StefanKottwitz I actually didn't like MJ, she was briefly a companion to #10
@samcarter_looks_forward_TUG'21 and then the ducks arrived. :)
> Scientists Gave Sober Cows a Drunk Walking Test: gizmodo.com/…

@PauloCereda :D That's good!

8:44 AM
@DavidCarlisle Sure, but the initial context was:
14 hours ago, by Faheem Mitha
@MarcelKrüger I see. I'm not familiar with fontspec, so comparisons with it mean nothing to me.

@FaheemMitha exactly, \setmainfont allows you to specify any system font without any latex specific fd file being set up in advance (that's the main idea behind fontspec, really) which it can do as most opentype fonts are only provided in one size to be scaled not optical design sizes like computer modern, and more or less standardised naming conventions allow it to guess bold and italic variants without having to be told the file names in advance.

@DavidCarlisle ooh Aussies

@FaheemMitha I never intended any comparisons with fontspec but wanted to make it easier for people not knowing the internals. Currently the error message for missing glyphs only shows the name which fontspec internally passes to luaotfload which most users might not find particularly useful. My question was supposed to be if it would be helpful if we showed the name passed to fontspec instead to help people identifying the font in question?

@DavidCarlisle They'd have to be completely standardized for complete automation. Otherwise the wrong results would be returned.
@PauloCereda Aussies?

@FaheemMitha that's why you can do \setmainfont[BoldFont=whatever,...]{comic sans} to give fontspec a bit of help when needed.
@FaheemMitha fontspec author

8:52 AM
@DavidCarlisle I see.
@DavidCarlisle Ah.

@PauloCereda 10991

@DavidCarlisle ooh it's getting close
@DavidCarlisle but I am sure siunitx versions will catch up
3

[also](data:,breakfast)
boo why isn't that a URL link

@DavidCarlisle oh no

@FaheemMitha We don't need fully standardized names since the fonts should contain metadata to allow matching them to families. Sadly this metadata is often inconsistent, misleading, missing or just wrong, so we need heuristics to fix it. That's one reason why luaotfload development never gets boring...

8:57 AM
@MarcelKrüger I don't know what luaotfload is either. Do you work on that?
I've heard the name here, though.

@FaheemMitha It's basically the layer under fontspec in LuaTeX. You probably never have to deal with it directly.

@MarcelKrüger OK

@PauloCereda You didn't like MJ? I'm shocked, IMO she was much better than Donna.

@MarcelKrüger Are you talking about "Doctor Who", or did I get my wires crossed?

@MarcelKrüger Oh I completely agree that she is much better than Donna! Donna is annoying! No hard feelings actually towards MJ, I just think she had an unfortunate storyline and she deserved better. :) I still think Rose and Amelia are my all time favourites. And I think Clara Oswald is way more annoying than Donna. :)

9:06 AM
@FaheemMitha Right, that was about Doctor Who.

Wow, you all watch it then?
I've tried to watch it a few times over the years.

@PauloCereda I can fully agree with all of that :) (Well, I think that Donna was more annoying than Clara but it's close)

@MarcelKrüger ooh :)

I never quite figured out why the Doctor randomly picks up attractive young human female persons.
Given that there is a whole universe out there.
You'd figure there would be people with tentacles in the mix. Perhaps a Dalek. And some fish people.

@FaheemMitha The last seasons might be interesting to watch. :)

9:18 AM
@PauloCereda Have you watched all of it?

@FaheemMitha Considering how much time the doctor spends around humans, it might just be more practical to travel with them since they can hide more easily.

@MarcelKrüger I suppose the question is why he spends so much time with them, and also why he looks so much like them. Wouldn't it make more sense to assume a nice spherical shape? Then he could easily roll everywhere.

@FaheemMitha The 2005 revival up to now, yes! :) Episodes from the 60's I only watched when available (it's quite challenging to find them).

Also, personally if I had the whole universe to choose from, I'm not sure I'd choose Humans myself. Though it does help when they look like Karen Gillan.

@FaheemMitha EXACTLY

9:25 AM
I hear they stopped making Torchwood.

@FaheemMitha I guess not so many aliens showed up at the castings.

@FaheemMitha History shows that unsupervised humans tend to destroy their own planet and/or commit genocide every now and then. So s/he might just want to keep an eye on them, especially after they are able to reach other civilizations.

@MarcelKrüger My point exactly. Well, part of it, anyway.

@PauloCereda Why am I not surprised that a duck likes Pond?

@samcarter_looks_forward_TUG'21 <3

9:30 AM
@PauloCereda Amy is my favourite companion :)

@PauloCereda The bread from your comic yesterday is missing - no companion without bread :)

@samcarter_looks_forward_TUG'21 ooh

@samcarter_looks_forward_TUG'21 What, you all watch it? Do you all get together and have parties?

@FaheemMitha I have a licensed Tom Baker's scarf!
(the 4th doctor)

9:38 AM
@FaheemMitha We definitely should have Doctor who parties!

@PauloCereda Tom Baker licenses scarfs? Interesting business model.

@PauloCereda I have a whole box of balls of wool which want to become a scarf :)

@FaheemMitha Who products. :)
@samcarter_looks_forward_TUG'21 ooh you have an scarf integral :)
@FaheemMitha I am saving that scarf when I finally go to the UK :)

(The lady in the wool shop looked a bit funny when I came with a chart with all the different colours I need)

@samcarter_looks_forward_TUG'21 YES

9:40 AM
@PauloCereda I hear it could come in handy there.

@samcarter_looks_forward_TUG'21 I once showed the colours to my mum... Mum's reaction: "too much information" :)

10:11 AM
Why does Amy Pond say "Raggedy man, goodnight."?

11:00 AM
A newbie question, but I am confused: if I want subfigures with reference-able labels like Figure 1a 1b etc, which is the non-obsolete package I should use to be a modern LaTeXer? I am a bit confused by subfig subfigure subcaption thingy...

@UlrikeFischer You about?

@JosephWright ?

@Rmano My favourite is subcaption

@samcarter_looks_forward_TUG'21 Thanks, if it's your favourite it's ok

@UlrikeFischer I was wondering about the meeting link: luckily Frank sorted it

11:40 AM
@DavidCarlisle Yes. On the other hand with samcarter's latest tikzlings release TikZ is used for quite openly showing bugs. :-)

1 hour later…
1:19 PM
@PauloCereda lol. My scarves very often tend to turn into Tom Baker-esque scarves. There is no room for them in the closet any more XD
@PauloCereda hmmm.... cute, but I wonder how long until it's broken.

1:31 PM
@PauloCereda Next step: control not your own backpack, but the one from whoever is standing in front of you in the queue :)

1 hour later…
2:42 PM
@samcarter_looks_forward_TUG'21 yes, Amy was great. And I liked the impossible girl.
(forgot the name)

@Plergux ooh
@Skillmon Clara

@PauloCereda YES!

The one I don't like :)

@PauloCereda ooh, no!
@PauloCereda why though?

@Skillmon I find her a bit annoying, but that's just me. One of the reasons might be because she was a companion for a long time...

2:59 PM
@PauloCereda well, she was the longest companion. I agree, they could've ended her sooner, but overall I really liked her.

@Skillmon :)

2 hours later…
5:13 PM
Is there a way to have LaTeX return an error if a specific file is not invoked with -shell-escape? I tried to see if this question had already been asked on the site, but didn't find anything.
1
Q: How can I throw an error if --shell-escape isn't enabled?

Chris HI'm writing a document that makes heavy use of \includesvg; that in turn requires --shell-escape so it can call inkscape. I'm compiling (as always) from the terminal, and don't really want to alias pdflatex to pdflatex --shell-escape, but I keep forgetting to use the argument. Is there a way in...

@FaheemMitha tex.stackexchange.com/a/598819/38080 just add an error instead of the output....

1 hour later…
6:21 PM
@FaheemMitha You could also copy the error message from minted.sty

6:44 PM
@Rmano Yes, the command line section of that is basically the answer I posted.

7:25 PM
@DavidCarlisle -- Please take a look at tex.stackexchange.com/posts/77742/revisions (the original question is 777737). I just noticed that "Community" added a CTAN link to amsmath; I think it should have been to latex-amsmath. Two questions: which link would you recommend, and (@JosephWright) why did "Community do this without letting us know it was happening (or did they announce it?)?

1 hour later…
8:31 PM
@barbarabeeton I think edits are attributed to "Community" if the users, who proposed the edit, is not registered. The review item claims to have asked you tex.stackexchange.com/review/suggested-edits/205772

@barbarabeeton This was a suggested edit by an anonymous user approved by you and Svend Tveskæg in February. The link is fine AFAICT

@samcarter_looks_forward_TUG'21 and @AlanMunn -- Thanks for the memory jog. The situation around amsmath has been changing ever since AMS relinquished it. There's even a latex-amsmath-dev package now (search on amsmath at CTAN). latex-amsmath has the best collection of documentation, and to my understanding, has supplanted "just plain" amsmath. That's why I was asking @DavidCarlisle (who actually maintains the thing). I was just discombobulated by the "Community" attribution.

@barbarabeeton Totally understandable. Attributing the edit to community is indeed a bit strange considering that question/answers from users, who are not logged in, are shown either under "userxxxxx` or a name they choose when submitting the post, so why not do the same for edits?

8:47 PM
@samcarter_looks_forward_TUG'21 -- There are days when this site just simply refuses to follow expected patterns. I hope somebody is benefiting from it.

@barbarabeeton "There are days when this site just simply refuses to follow expected patterns." Are there really days on which it follows expected patters? :)

@samcarter_looks_forward_TUG'21 -- Oh, I've seen the draft schedule for TUG 2021. Your talk is scheduled for a time when (I hope) I won't be awake. So please make your slides and commentary so that the youtube video will be pleasurable when watched later. (You always do, of course.)
@samcarter_looks_forward_TUG'21 -- Now that is an excellent question! (It did, once upon a time ...)

@barbarabeeton Is the draft public? I already recorded my talk a couple of weeks ago - you don't need to worry about missing anything :)
@barbarabeeton must be a very long time ago :)

@samcarter_looks_forward_TUG'21 -- Not public yet, but nearing that state. (I sent a few suggestions about when to schedule a few key sessions, like the AGM and interviews, so that a majority of people would actually be awake.) Arthur has done a decent job under thankless circumstances. And remained calm.
@samcarter_looks_forward_TUG'21 -- It was very nice in beta, when the banner and "personality" were being designed.

9:04 PM
@barbarabeeton Sounds very promising! I'm sure it will a couple of very interesting and entertaining days -- just like last year.
I really hope to be awake for the interviews, they were my favourite events last year.

9:16 PM
@samcarter_looks_forward_TUG'21 -- Frank Mittelbach is on Thursday evening; same time zone as you. Norbert, on the other hand, will be 02:00 for you, but early morning for him and late afternoon for the interviewer. (Last year, editing the interviews for TUGboat, I was really thankful I'd watched them live. Even so, I had to watch the videos over and over, and still had questions. The (auto-)transcriptions were awful! This year, at least I know the interviewees and can cope with their accents.)

@barbarabeeton Frank and I were dicussing whether to pre-record talks

@JosephWright -- Prerecorded talks can work well as long as the slides get onto the video. (Patrick Ion's didn't last year, and the whole thing was lost. Which is a shame -- that talk held special interest for me, since I was involved in the TeXification of Math Reviews.)

@barbarabeeton Thanks! Being able to at least watch 50% of the interviews live sounds good :)
