@barbarabeeton As in Wooster sauce?
@barbarabeeton For about a year back in ´93 or so, I often travelled I-80 through Pennsylvania. There's a town called Dubois there. I always thought the pronunciation would be like French, until I happened upon one of their local FM stations – and learned that they pronounce it doo-boys.

8:27 AM
@HaraldHanche-Olsen There is also a Dubois in WY - we stayed there several days while visiting Yellowstone. I think they also said doo-boys (although they pronounced Teton the French way...). Cozy little town.

9:13 AM
@AlanMunn ooh doctors
ooh a ham from a bloke name Peter

Hello! Does sb. know: What do I have to do to get fixed values on my y-axis? Not "10^{-2}" etc.
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{pgfplots}
\pgfplotsset{compat=1.7}

\begin{document}
\begin{tikzpicture}[
declare function={binom(\k,\n,\p)=\n!/(\k!*(\n-\k)!)*\p^\k*(1-\p)^(\n-\k);}
]
\begin{axis}[
axis lines=middle,
samples at={300,...,500},
xmin=0, xmax=2000,
xtick={0,500,...,2000},
xticklabels={0,500,...,2000},
minor xtick={0,100,...,2000},
extra x ticks={0}, % Origo
 y tick label style={
        /pgf/number format/.cd,
            fixed,
            fixed zerofill,
            precision=1,

@cis scaled y ticks=false.

9:34 AM
@TorbjørnT. Ah, I understand. Thx!

@cis tex.stackexchange.com/questions/9803/… --- if you google for "pgfplots remove axis scale" you find a lot of hits. Do not use the search of the main site, it's highly unreliable.
@cis I have also this: tex.stackexchange.com/a/124268/38080 bookmarked, because it's great in a lot of cases...

cis
@Rmano Ah, thx too.

2 hours later…
12:08 PM
@DavidCarlisle 600 pages of the pgfplots documentation inserted with \includepdf and all links are active:

@UlrikeFischer I didn't know pgfplots had any documentation
@UlrikeFischer good work though, that's going to be really useful for including pdfs!

12:29 PM
@UlrikeFischer how on earth have you managed to do that?

@daleif I'm using the pdfe library from luatex to extract the annotations and a modified version of pax sty to reinsert them.

12:41 PM
@DavidCarlisle how has been the longtable documentation created? When I compile simply the dtx is has no links.

@UlrikeFischer like most of tools it just uses doc.sty, no hyperref.

@DavidCarlisle when I do texdoc longtable I get a version with links.

@UlrikeFischer yes they must have a ltxdoc.cfg that loads hyperref

@UlrikeFischer magic!

@UlrikeFischer this probably /usr/local/texlive/2020/texmf-dist/source/latex/latex-tds/tex/ltxdoc.cfg

12:45 PM
@DavidCarlisle found it.
@DavidCarlisle it contains a faulty destination. footnote2 creates
155 0 obj
[98 0 R /Fit]
endobj
instead of
155 0 obj
<< /D [98 0 R /Fit]>>
endobj

@UlrikeFischer blame Heiko, my version has no faulty destinations?
@UlrikeFischer is that using the latex-tds config or a different one?

@DavidCarlisle I copied the dtx and the cfg and compiled. But I looked at it because my code errored on the official longtable.pdf too. I guess I will have to add a check, that I really get a dictionary.

@DavidCarlisle Some time ago I asked for that package here, but you told me that you had no control over it, it's really obsolete and only causes confusion :(

1:05 PM
@DavidCarlisle I checked the reference, actually the value can be an array. So longtable is doing it ok.

@PabloGonzálezL as I said to Ulrike if there are links in the longtable pdf then they must be added by that or a similar cfg, I remain blameless:-)

@DavidCarlisle Hehe...

Showcasing the proof environment to a user:

\begin{lemma}
We have that $2+2=5$.
\end{lemma}

\begin{proof}
This is a trivial consequence of the fact that $n=42$ for all values of $n$.
\end{proof}

@yo' the logic seems sound.

yo'
@DavidCarlisle all of this is true modulo 1, obviously.

2:03 PM
Uff, longtable links now work too ;-)

@UlrikeFischer :)

@DavidCarlisle happily just today Hans mentioned the undocumented command pdfe.type on the luatex list.

2:26 PM
@UlrikeFischer so I see

3:05 PM
@PauloCereda The arara manual reliably causes Skim to crash when I try to search inside it. @HaraldHanche-Olsen @egreg do you see the same behaviour?

@AlanMunn No problem for me with TL2019 and TL2020

@egreg What Mac OS version do you have?

@AlanMunn 10.15.2; Skim 1.5.7

@egreg Same version of Skim for me, but I'm running 10.12.6

@AlanMunn Not really up-to-date. ;-)

3:19 PM
@egreg Well I can't update to Catalina without losing access to my department photocopier/printer (Canon is awful at providing Mac drivers). And upgrading the OS is a pain in the neck generally so I do it as little as possible. :)

1 hour later…
4:24 PM
Is there a way to write to the terminal in expl3, without a newline, similar to \message{...}?

@AlanMunn Nope (TL2020). What Skim version, what macOS version? I am on Skim 1.5.2 (118) and macOS 10.15.4.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen Skim 1.57 and OS 10.12.6 But it's not just the arara manual, it seems more general. The forest manual does the same. So I wonder if it's the most recent Skim update that's causing the problem with the old OS.

@egreg oh, guess I should upgrade my skim. I am waay behind.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen Or maybe not... :)

... Anf if not, can \message be told to not write to the log, but to the terminal only?

4:31 PM
@HaraldHanche-Olsen @egreg @PauloCereda Downgrading Skim to 1.5.6 did the trick.

@AlanMunn I'll try it. I can always fish the previous version out of a backup. And in any case, it seems likely that your problem is due to the combination of an old macOS and a new Skim

@HaraldHanche-Olsen Yes, from @egreg's experience that seems right.

@AlanMunn You could try to file a ticket with them and see if they are willing to look into it.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen Given that I'm 3 OS versions behind, I doubt it will be a priority. Even Apple no longer supports Sierra with security updates I think.

@AlanMunn You're probably right. (I did update; it still works fine.)

4:40 PM
@AlexG \tex_message:D :-) (Actual answer: not as far as I know. expl3 implements \iow_term:n with \write rather than \message, so you always get a newline. In fact, the kernel doesn't use \message anywhere)

@HaraldHanche-Olsen Apparently they know and will fix it! sourceforge.net/p/skim-app/bugs/1361

Just heard on "Wait, wait, don't tell me!": Big Bird (or Children's Television Workshop) once sued yandy for selling an unauthorized Big Bird costume. Old TeXers may remember that Y&Y once had a presence by that name on the web as a purveyor of a quite nice implementation of TeX for PCs. When Y&Y went out of business, it was quite surprising to TeX users connecting to that site. (Kind of like googling "latex".)

@PhelypeOleinik Oh, thanks for both your answers and the references!

@AlanMunn Yay!

4:44 PM
@AlexG No problem :-)

@UlrikeFischer nice. Just took a very long walk and now my feet hardly work anymore

2 hours later…
7:05 PM
I have a font embedding problem with lualatex + dvips (TL 2020 pretest):
$ dvips fonts
This is dvips(k) 2020.1 Copyright 2020 Radical Eye Software (www.radicaleye.com)
' LuaTeX output 2020.04.05:2102' -> fonts.ps
kpathsea:make_tex: Invalid filename `[lmroman10-regular]:+tlig;', contains '['
dvips: Font [lmroman10-regular]:+tlig; not found; using cmr10

</home/grahn/bin/texlive/2020/texmf-dist/dvips/l3backend/l3backend-dvips.pro>
\documentclass{article}

\begin{document}
Hello!
\end{document}
What can I do?
(I meant dvilualatex + dvips.)

7:37 PM
@AlexG I don't think that dvips can handle open type fonts. You will have to switch to OT1 or T1 encoding and use type1 fonts.

@UlrikeFischer How can I do this? \usepackage[T1]{fontenc} cannot be used, I guess.

@AlexG sure you can, but you shouldn't use non-ascii in the input. Why are you trying to use lualatex with dvips?

@UlrikeFischer Because my new package makes calls of \directlua{...} :)

@AlexG and why does the package need dvi output?

@UlrikeFischer Because it is intended to be used with the dvisvgm backend.

7:48 PM
@AlexG and then why dvips?

@UlrikeFischer The same error with dvisvgm, btw.
@UlrikeFischer I could swear It had worked before.
(dvilualatex + dvips)
@UlrikeFischer And if CM fonts work, why don't LM fonts do out of the box?

8:04 PM
@AlanMunn: I am glad it works!

@AlexG the cmr fonts are in the psfonts.map, and dvips can simply embed them. There are also otf entries for cjk fonts, but there are not embedded but ghostscript must handle this. But I don't really know how it works, it is long ago that I really cared about dvips. And dvisvgm is another question anyway, you could ask the author if it can handle such fonts and how.

8:23 PM
@UlrikeFischer I tried with \usepackage[T1]{fontenc}. It works with both, dvips and dvisvgm.

@AlexG sure, you are using legacy fonts then - that has worked for decades.

@UlrikeFischer Ok, this suffices for now. Thank you!

2 hours later…
10:12 PM
@AlexG the dvi from luatex isn't really usable if you use any fonts not usable by pdftex

yo'
@PauloCereda @barbarabeeton Thanks for the reply and you has mail :)

Do we have a general question about how to understand TeX errors (or read them in the log?)
