@DavidCarlisle right, and you don't wanna confuse people with filecontents, which will moreover hide the file from the user in the project's cache... Makes sense to me :) I'll raise it with the team.

@JosephWright shhhh
@AlanMunn @barbarabeeton have you ever watched the Blackadder episode named "Ink and Incapability", where they ruin Samuel Johnson's new book, the dictionary of the English language? It's amazing. :)
@JosephWright my contrafibularities, by the way. ^^ :)

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz just home office in Germany and reducing hundreds of overtime hours

cis
I get
C:\Users\ccc\Desktop\Test>tlmgr update --self

tlmgr.pl: Local TeX Live (2019) is older than remote repository (2020).
Cross release updates are only supported with
  update-tlmgr-latest(.sh/.exe) --update
See tug.org/texlive/upgrade.html for details.
...
...
Do I have to install TeXLive2020 now?

@StefanKottwitz :) I wish I could reduce overtime hours i had to do when I was a student... :)

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz /duck hug

@PauloCereda Now I'm a PhD student, so again, no overtime hours. I should rethink some decisions.

@cis if you want updates, yes

cis
9:24 AM
@DavidCarlisle Ok, thx. So I will deinstall TL2019 and install TL2020 today...
I will have to save my good araras a.s.o.

@cis you don't need to remove tl2019 unless you are short of space (I have all versions from 2017 on this laptop)

cis
@DavidCarlisle Such a "reset" may not be bad at all. I actually always installed the full version of TeXLive. Lately he has asked me to install some packages, e.g. today: 'zref-abspage'. I was actually used to TL that I have all the packages ....

9:40 AM
@cis sure I have full installs of all of them (for testing) but as a general rule if you have the space id install tl2020 before deleting 2019, it's not impossible to get errors in the first few days while they sort out any issues with the new version

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz ooh Dr. Rabbit

@PauloCereda Currently still Master Rabbit (and I'm not yet legally allowed to use that title as my final grade isn't decided on yet).

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz oh no

@PauloCereda So I guess I'm Bachelor Rabbit currently, which doesn't sound nice at all.

My first update is arara ...

9:52 AM
@UlrikeFischer <3

@UlrikeFischer so was mine. One could think we're using the same software!

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz <3

@PauloCereda I have to confess, I still never used arara... My current workflow is just too adapted to Makefiles.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz wait for arara 6.0, you will be pleasantly surprised. :)

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz before Corona, over time hours meant +30% salary :-o I miss that now

10:07 AM
@StefanKottwitz is your family dependent on that extra money or was it just some nice extra (sorry if that question is too personal)?

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz nice extra
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz working for airline and cruise lines I should not expect too much theses days :-o

@StefanKottwitz well, you're working on their IT infrastructure I thought. Are there not any projects in modernisation or stuff like that they want to do while their ships have to remain harboured anyway?

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz That was the first thought, when all this started: do dry docks earlier than planned, do projects now instead of later as the ships are not sailing, but it got worse.
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz So nobody can travel, nobody can enter or leave the ships, even the crew is trapped.
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz And the cruise lines did a full stop on spending money for all projects.

@StefanKottwitz guess I underestimated the problems the cruise lines are facing.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz and they hardly can expect any help from their "home countries" as they registered in Panama, Liberia, Bahamas for example to avoid taxes, and hire crew for cheap such as from Phillipines or Indonesia.

10:19 AM
@StefanKottwitz well, that's their own fault (I just hope that employees' existances like yours aren't endangered). (I'll pass for now on that 17min video, but it looks interesting, maybe this evening)

cis
Oh yes ... The installation TL2020 is now running. Now I can't teX for 2-3 hours. :( I was on an interesting topic.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Yes, it is their choice. But at the end they follow market demand (be cheap and produce cheap).
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz I'm sorry for the crew that is still at home and got their contracts cancelled, and for the crew that wanted to go home and is stuck on the ship.

@PauloCereda Machete doesn't tweet!

@cis Sorry, what?

@cis so does Chromium. You can change the performance settings in the preferences.
@PauloCereda I guess it's supposed to be a reference to the movie "Machete" in which the eponymous protagonist says "Machete doesn't write sms" (or something like that). I don't get the link to that reference, though.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz oh

cis
11:40 AM
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Ok
@PauloCereda In "Machete 2 - Machete kills again" Machete is recommended to check Twitter. Machete replies: "Machete does not tweet!"

@cis oh, I didn't know that line is part of the second movie.

cis
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz I think it is Part 2...

@cis I know that he says he doesn't write sms in the first.

Does somebody know why the package ctan.org/pkg/pgfornament apparently was removed from Tex Live 2020?
Or should I ask a separate question?

@CampanIgnis imho it was removed for some times because of some bugs, but it had be uploaded to ctan a few days ago so it should be in the updates in the next days.

@UlrikeFischer Thank you very much. I just installed it manually.
But I will look out for updates.

1:42 PM
@JosephWright yes I know, but it makes it sometimes a bit difficult to understand the code. I'm never quite sure if "luatex" means "luatex" or "luatex-but-can-be-luahbtex-too" ;-) But I guess over the next months we can drop luatex and then it will get clearer again.

2:00 PM
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz -- You can always phrase it as "Rabbit, Sc.B." (I'm assuming it's science, not arts, and "B.S." sounds even worse than "Bachelor.)

@barbarabeeton In Germany the official title is B.Sc. and I'm not really allowed to change it to Sc.B. :(
@barbarabeeton So correct would be Rabbit, B.Sc.

@StefanKottwitz -- Our little local cruise line, U.S. registered, is offering up their two ships (passenger capacity about 100 each) for housing medical personnel and other first responders in Rhode Island and Massachusetts coastal locations. The news report sounded like they're providing all meals and other services, which keeps their employees employed. Sounds like a winning arrangement, if it's accepted.

@barbarabeeton ooh
Rabbit titles

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz -- That little "c" makes all the difference!
@PauloCereda -- Oh, that's quite charming! A very svelte snake!

@barbarabeeton indeed!

@cis file is no more, from version 5.0 on: gitlab.com/islandoftex/arara/-/blob/master/CHANGELOG.md Simply replace it by reference and it should work again.

cis
@PauloCereda Ohhh, what have I to? I fear I do not understand.

@barbarabeeton in Germany almost all universities had to switch to Bachelor&Master system. AFAIK only one engineering university remained handing out diploma, and that one has to pay fines for doing so (I hope this isn't fake news, I didn't check for 6 years whether that changed)

@cis arara does not have a ghostscript rule...
This is most certainly a user rule. So it needs to be updated.

cis
2:26 PM
@PauloCereda Thats my / your / cgnieders rule
!config
identifier: ghostscript
name: GhostScript
commands:
- name: The application
  command: >
    @{
         return getCommand(program, options, '-r' + resolution, '-sDEVICE=' + device,
                '-dGraphicsAlphaBits=' + alphabits, '-dTextAlphaBits=' + alphabits,
                '-sOutputFile=' + outputfilename + allpages + '.' + format,
                getBasename(file) + '.pdf');
    }
arguments:
- identifier: program
  flag: >

        return parameters.program;
    }
  default: >

Done:
!config

commands:

  command: >

                '-dGraphicsAlphaBits=' + alphabits, '-dTextAlphaBits=' + alphabits,
                '-sOutputFile=' + outputfilename + allpages + '.' + format,

    }
arguments:
- identifier: program
  flag: >
    @{
        return parameters.program;
    }
  default: >
Now it should work. :)

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz -- By "diploma", I mean the parchment certificate awarded to show one's achievement, not the title. (The certificate is so nice to frame and put on one's wall. At Brown, the physical certificate at least used to get larger the more exalted the degree. I don't actually know if real parchment is still used, and this year, I hope it's not electronic only. One local college will be holding a rescheduled award ceremony on Halloween. Hmmm.)

@cis run as administrator.

cis
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz I don't know how to do that in the cmd

2:34 PM
@cis you have to start the cmd as admin. Hit the "Windows"-button, type in CMD, right click on it and choose "Run as Administrator"

cis
I installed TL2020 as Admin - seems this was a big mistake:
https://www.tug.org/texlive/doc/texlive-de/texlive-de.pdf ---> "schreibschutz"
The writing protection is everywhere... cmd, Texworks

@cis Well, I never used TL on Windows... Maybe wait for @UlrikeFischer, she's used to it. Or better yet, ask a question on the main site if you can't resolve it.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz well I never install as admin unless the applications force me.

cis
Ok, let's install TL2020 once more (NOT as admin)....

3:01 PM
@JosephWright learnlatex.github.io/en/lesson-12 and learnlatex.github.io/en/lesson-13 now work as multi-file projects in both overleaf and latex online (actually both using single file projects using filecontents which isn't ideal but enough to test the examples, if I can get real multi-file projects working it shouldn't need a change to the documents)

3:31 PM
less success with luatex :) @UlrikeFischer try davidcarlisle.github.io/ll/en/lesson-14 with latexonlin... how far can we get with no luaotfload :-)

@DavidCarlisle well I said it is rather old. Even if luaotfload were there I wouldn't dare to suggest to use it - to many changes since then.

@UlrikeFischer I may see if I can get xetex to work but I doubt fontconfig is set up to find by the internal font name so I'll have to use filenames I guess.
@UlrikeFischer If I get things more or less working I was going to contact the author and ask about possible updates. Or we could self host it looks fairly easy if you know anything about docker (I don't really but that's a minor detail) but we'd have to find somewhere to host it and that might be tricky for free hosts.

@DavidCarlisle we can ask @PauloCereda about docker - he mentioned the word in his video so he must know about it ;-)

@UlrikeFischer ooh I know their logo is a whale :)

@PauloCereda A whale carrying cargo containers.

3:44 PM
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz exactly!

@PauloCereda 100% of my knowledge about docker... :)

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz ooh :)

Could you fix these rules eventually? @PauloCereda

A: arara: How to fix ghostscript.yaml due to arara - version 4?

Paulo CeredaThis is my personal take at this particular rule conversion: File ghostscript.yaml: !config identifier: ghostscript name: GhostScript commands: - name: The application command: > @{ return getCommand(program, options, '-r' + resolution, '-sDEVICE=' + device, '-dGr...

TeXnicianIn cooperation with the OP I did come up with the following: !config # SageTeX-Rule for arara. # # Dear Windows-users, please check the paths # pathToBashExecutive and pathToSageStartfile # due to your Sage-installation! # identifier: sagetex name: SageTeX authors: - TeXnician (Author) - c...

BTW: cleanx.yaml seems to work still....

3:47 PM
@UlrikeFischer oh luatexversion is 79 :(

@DavidCarlisle more than 42 ;-)
@DavidCarlisle I'm just trying to handle problems in this tex system: This is pdfTeX, Version 3.1415926-2.4-1.40.13 (MiKTeX 2.9) (preloaded format=pdflatex 2013.3.19) . And as being miktex it is not complete, so everytime I suggest a package I get the answer back that it isn't there and can't be installed ;-( They not even have longtable ...

@UlrikeFischer xelatex works!! davidcarlisle.github.io/ll/en/lesson-14 I think that's enough to be able to move it to learnlatex

@DavidCarlisle nice. Were the font in the system or did you add them?

@UlrikeFischer there already
@UlrikeFischer works in overleaf as well now

cis
@PauloCereda I have to hear the installing concert about 2h. Then I could try to fix by myself.

@UlrikeFischer @JosephWright learnlatex.github.io/en/lesson-14 works on both platforms (the script always uses xelatex if {fontspec} appears in the main document)

@cis poke me if you need any assistance. :)
@barbarabeeton ooh

cis
I will watch "Mad Mission 4" during this loooong TL2020 installation...

4:17 PM
@DavidCarlisle Wow!

@DavidCarlisle hmmm

@JosephWright luatex is 0.79 and luaotfload not installed so luatex is out unless I reach out and get some updates, but I think xetex is enough for today

@cis Choose a fast mirror. That's a reason why I installed ctan.net close to me. ;-)

4:45 PM
Any mac users out there? Did you run the latest system upgrade, released on Thursday, I think? I did, on two computers. On one of them, but not the other, it removed /usr/local/texlive and moved its contents into /Users/Shared/Relocated Items/Security/System/Volumes/Data/. Of course, I did not find the moved files until I had restored from backup: 45 GB and more than a million files (all the TL versions from 2015 forward). Very mysterious. And maddening. |-(

    }

@cis I know. :)

6:00 PM
@yo' thanks, the main example using filecontents is learnlatex.github.io/en/lesson-13 with the javascript setting it up being learnlatex.github.io/scripts/runlatex.js (openinoverleaf function:-) the similar code in the latexonline version is copied rather than shared specifically to allow one or other to be changed to something better if that is found) using filecontents allows people to write the pages, which is the main thing at the moment.

cis
6:15 PM
sagetex.yaml work now too.....
This is a tricky part, because there is no sagetex in TL as a standard and the ctan-version is not compatible with your sage installation in common. But there are all needed files in the sage-folder....
!config
# SageTeX-Rule for arara.
#
# Dear Windows-users, please check the paths
# pathToBashExecutive    and    pathToSageStartfile
# due to your Sage-installation!
#
identifier: sagetex
name: SageTeX
authors:

- cis (Idea)
arguments: []
commands:
- name: A SageTeX Rule for arara
  command: >

        pathToSageStartfile = "C:/Programme/SageMath8.9/runtime/opt/sagemath-8.9/sage";

@cis If @PauloCereda hasn't done it, I suspect nobody else will have.

@AlanMunn :) IIRC I used ZSNes in my machine. :)
It's a good Super Nintendo / Super Famicon emulator.
Both are available in my distro repository, so it wouldn't be any trouble to use, provided that you have the game ROMs.

RIP John Conway :(

8:17 PM
@PauloCereda well I didn't know him well but he was there while I was there and I was one of the few people based in the math department (not having a college as on a research council fellowship) so I saw him quite a bit , and the sound of backgammon dice just outside my door was not uncommon:-) they were just publishing the atlas of finite groups at that time (that was published December 85, I started in Cambridge in the September)

@DavidCarlisle wow!

@PauloCereda he got a job in the states and left the following year

@DavidCarlisle oh

9:10 PM
@PauloCereda @AlanMunn I have found that the snes9x can be used like the ZSNES, of course a few settings are necessary.
It should be mentioned that some hacks never run with ZSNES. I am now very satisfied with the snes9x after I have got used to it
As far I know, @DavidCarlisle only uses Kaizo-Romhacks....
