@DavidCarlisle But still not the harfbuzzed LuaTeX, I suppose.
"expl3 by default". meaning it's not necessary to load any packages for expl3?
LuaTeX uses the GPL v2? I thought the LPPL was standard for TeX. github.com/TeX-Live/luatex/blob/…
Is it correct to say that \expandafter itself is not expandable? So when TeX sees it, it immediately executes it?

12:40 AM
@FaheemMitha lulatex-dev (in what you have and the 2020-02-02 release) is hb, the main one isn't luahbtex until texlive 2020
@FaheemMitha no tex executable is lppl that is a latex macro thing (there is a clue in the name)
@FaheemMitha no it is expandable

@DavidCarlisle Oh, I see.
@DavidCarlisle Oh. What does it expand to?
It's a TeX primitive.
I could not find any discussion about this, so I thought maybe it just executes directly.

@FaheemMitha it expands to the following token followed by the first level expansion of the token following that.
@FaheemMitha for an expandable token "execute" if it means anything at all is expansion

@DavidCarlisle I thought execution was a separate step from expansion.

@FaheemMitha it's not really a defined term here

Per the whole mouth vs stomach analogy.

12:52 AM
@FaheemMitha expandafter is expansion (so not stomach)

@DavidCarlisle I thought execution corresponds to the stomach thing.
And if a token cannot be expanded, it is executed.
@DavidCarlisle Oh.

@FaheemMitha well no if a token expands it is gone

@DavidCarlisle Sorry, I meant if the token is not expandable, then it's executed.

@FaheemMitha yes more or less

@DavidCarlisle Ok. So \expandafter does what it does via expansion, not execution?

12:57 AM
@FaheemMitha yes as I say, it's expandable (but "execution" isn't a defined term, you might choose to call expansion execution )

@DavidCarlisle Execution isn't a defined term? It's used all over the place.
For example, the first chapter of TeX by Topic.

@FaheemMitha the word does not appear once in the texbook

@DavidCarlisle So the term "execution processor" is created by TeX by Topic?

@FaheemMitha I never read the book, just dipped in to it a couple of times.

@DavidCarlisle Ok.

1:28 AM
The verify_checksum: -5 problem came up a couple of times in different places now. I've posted a Q&A on that now.

Q: tlmgr: unexpected return value from verify_checksum: -5

Henri MenkeWhen I am trying to update TeX Live I receive an error. Why does this happen and what does the error mean? $ tlmgr update --self --all /usr/local/texlive/2019/bin/x86_64-linux/tlmgr: unexpected return value from verify_checksum: -5

5 hours later…
yo'

@DavidCarlisle I see Frank is experimenting with floats, but not working on xor ... twitter.com/TeXUsersGroup/status/1228891717874569216

10:00 AM
@yo' ah yes, I thought he'd released that before, but apparently not

There doesn't appear to be a binary build of Biber 2.14. Unless I'm just missing it for some reason.

10:16 AM
@FaheemMitha I just have whatever comes with texlive and that's 2.14

@DavidCarlisle I looked at the Biber website on Sourceforge.

@FaheemMitha i would guess rather few people use the upstream biber releases compared to what ships with texlive or miktex

@DavidCarlisle Agreed.

11:19 AM
Is there some reason why Biber 2.14 is required for this version of TeX Live? Earlier it was 2.13, but I assume things have not changed much.
The reason I ask is that 2.14 requires a more recent version of Perl to cpmpile than available on Debian 10 (buster). It's not the first time I've run into this problem.
The workaround I've used before it to use an upstream binary for biber, but that's not really a nice solution.

11:43 AM
@FaheemMitha Good morning :-) and good LaTeX....by best regards.

Hi @Sebastiano

Excuse me everybody....but is there a problem with MikTeX console?
I change the server but immediately I get the error screen: The remote package repository is outdated. You have to choose another repository. url="http://mirror.easyname.at/ctan/systems/win32/miktex/tm/packages/"
@StefanKottwitz Good morning :-):-) from the hot Sicily.

1 hour later…
1:11 PM
Enjoying the sun in Rome.

@FaheemMitha biber always seems to need a bleeding edge perl release not sure why really. I assume it's been 2.14 since texlive 2019 came out last year, but I don't follow biber developments much

@FaheemMitha It would seem so, unless it's mentioned in TeX the Program (which I haven't read). TbT mentions a pipeline of four processors: #1 is the input processor, which Knuth calls tex's eyes. #2 is the expansion processor, or tex's mouth according to Knuth. #3 and #4 together constitute what Knuth calls tex's stomach, with the execution processor primarily concerned with building lists and the visual processor doing the final steps of actual typesetting.

@Sebastiano Good morning from the hot Bahamas.

@StefanKottwitz Good afternoon from the unseasonably warm (but far from hot) Norway.
@AlanMunn Just remember to do as the Romans do. I.e., don't put pineapple on the pizza.

Some work on a ship for 20 days.

1:27 PM
@StefanKottwitz Funny, when I saw MIA my first thought was “missing in action”. Then my brain went “wait, what?”.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen What do you think if you see BS? ;-)

@StefanKottwitz male bovine fecal matter, what else?

@HaraldHanche-Olsen Bahamas? :-)

@StefanKottwitz well, that was in a faded colour, so I hardly noticed it. Some say it stands for bachelor of science, but I don't believe them.

1:50 PM
@AlanMunn yay

2:27 PM
@HaraldHanche-Olsen -- Some schools avoid that by being archaic, and rendering it as Sc.B.

@barbarabeeton ooh
Also quack :)

@PauloCereda Dinner?
I am not nasty.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen oh no
@HaraldHanche-Olsen you are not mean :)

@PauloCereda that, too, I agree

2:49 PM
@AlanMunn Enjoy Roman cooking!

3:02 PM
@CarLaTeX Pizza Romana is good. :)

@PauloCereda Yes, and also spaghetti/bucatini cacio e pepe and carciofi alla giudia

@CarLaTeX ooh

@PauloCereda and spaghetti alla carbonara

@CarLaTeX :)
@AlanMunn como terminou o jogo de futebol entre os patos? Empatado. :)

2 hours later…
4:50 PM
@StefanKottwitz As esteemed as I would like to be in the Bahamas :)

5:15 PM
@Sebastiano blind wild guess: could be the same as tex.stackexchange.com/questions/528634/… ?

3 hours later…
8:02 PM
@Rmano Thank you very much for your kind answer. Around 17.30 Italian time miktex console works perfectly. It was probably off-line. My best regards. Sebastiano

8:21 PM
It is a bit sad that one cannot get a copy of the BA Math font. I like Baskerville.

@mickep I don't know if TUG still have contacts @barbarabeeton might know.

@DavidCarlisle I, and others, have tried to buy them via Micropress, but we get no response.
@DavidCarlisle So, if someone else (@barbarabeeton?) has a contact, it would be great.
