12:00 AM
OH I see
nope, I was wrong

12:14 AM
Got it.
Also: Dammit, this has the SAME issue as latinmodern with the dot
@DavidCarlisle Is there a better Computer Modern version with upright Greek letters (or at least the like, five I need)

@Canageek no idea, Greek isn't really my thing but actually using luatex you could make an on-the-fly virtual font that pulls in whatever glyphs you want from wherever so you could put the cursive kappa in the empty slot and pull the k kappa from the math font and make any other adjustments you want packaged as a single font

@DavidCarlisle OK, that sounds cool. The big downside is no one else in my group is going to use LuaLaTeX so I'm making my work useless for all following grad students :(

@Canageek inspire them to follow your lead:-) For combining fonts see texdoc combofont package by some german lady, I forget who

12:31 AM
@DavidCarlisle based on a suggestion from an english gentleman, I forgot who

@UlrikeFischer was it? I forgot that bit...

@DavidCarlisle this starts with "David" tex.stackexchange.com/a/371989/2388

12 hours ago, by David Carlisle
@UlrikeFischer I was taught not to follow suspicious links posted on the internet

@DavidCarlisle but it starts with David and you said one can trust you

@UlrikeFischer but I would have to trust you when you tell me that, if i don't follow the link.

1:15 AM
Me: *thinks I figured out something*
Me: *manages to get the REVERSE of what I want*

@yo' :o

@yo' oh my

11:00 AM
@DavidCarlisle I see you trust Google links ;-)

yo'
@CarLaTeX my dad's at the Czech Geophysical Institute, but fortunately not the director of it anymore, so not the one getting all the phone calls :D

11:31 AM
@UlrikeFischer you have to trust infallible oracles

@DavidCarlisle So you could google for "call-a-luatex-combo-font-through-nfss", verify my link with the oracle and then trust me?

@DavidCarlisle quack

11:49 AM
@PauloCereda brunch, but also as you reminded me I have a badge:

@PauloCereda Now I'm offended:( It should be obvious what it is, see question on main site :(

@DavidCarlisle er... link?

Q: Drawings of flower pots

linuxfanI'd like to know if anyone has code to draw flower pots like the one in the attached picture below.

@DavidCarlisle OOH
@DavidCarlisle artistic skills

11:55 AM
@PauloCereda I thought so

@DavidCarlisle you should post it as an answer

@samcarter_prepared_for_xmas not like this forum to repeat a theme
so @samcarter_prepared_for_xmas, were you prepared in time?

@DavidCarlisle Yeah, I even had time to replace "preparing" with "prepared" :) But I'm still looking for a good idea what to use next

1:04 PM
@PauloCereda Thanks for supporting & mentioning :)

@yo' :)

4:29 PM
@MarcelKrüger context has just updated, so I can try to import again.

@UlrikeFischer I just pushed an import before I saw your message.

@MarcelKrüger that is fine too. Did you did lualibs too?

@UlrikeFischer No, I am still testing the fontloader.

5:20 PM
@DavidCarlisle Did you have a chance to look at my dvipdfmx stuff yet?

5:57 PM
It's probably explained in the TeXbook, but I'm still astounded by the fact that a macro can be defined after it's first used. I still tend to think in terms of procedural programming and sometimes it trips me up.

@LaTeXereXeTaL not if "used" means really used (executed).

@yo' -- In the U.S., there's an online site where one can report experiencing an earthquake. In 2010, I was sitting in my office in Providence when my chair started swaying side to side. The earthquake was south of Washington, DC, a bit under 600 km distant. I was surprised that it could be felt so far away, and reported it. (It was actually felt quite a bit farther north.) But that one wasn't as devastating as the one that just happened in Croatia.

6:20 PM
@UlrikeFischer I am obviously not understanding something then. I've been looking for a way to define package version and date once and used multiple places. In the latest expkv update, @Skillmon uses his \ekvDate and \ekvVersion in the package file but they're defined in an included file.

6:35 PM
@LaTeXereXeTaL you can define a macro that contains a macro not yet defined. But you can't expand it before defining the inner macro...

@LaTeXereXeTaL you can do \newcommand\blub{\somestillundefinedcommand}. But this simply writing down the word \somestillundefinedcommand, you are not using it. But as soon as you do \blub somewhere, the command inside must be defined.

6:57 PM
@JosephWright er... same state as jadetex and longtable 4.14 ...
@LaTeXereXeTaL the replacement text of a macro definition isn't processed at all (other than tokenization)
@LaTeXereXeTaL there is nothing special about "undefined" here it's no different that for any token in the replacement text the definition at the point of use is used not the definition (or not) where the macro is defined. That's why if you go \renewcommand\arraystretch{2} before a tabular it gets stretched, the value at the point tabular is defined is not compiled in.

7:38 PM
@UlrikeFischer @DavidCarlisle Okay. Then I don't understand how the example I cited works.

7:49 PM
I'm astounded at my apparent stupidity.

8:05 PM
@LaTeXereXeTaL brainfart? :p

@DavidCarlisle :)

@Plergux I think I'm just thick in some ways.

8:19 PM
@LaTeXereXeTaL where is the problem? expkv loads expkv.tex, this defines \ekvDate, and then it is used.

8:55 PM
@UlrikeFischer It looks to be used in \ProvidesPackage before \input{expkv.tex}. Am I missing something obvious?

@LaTeXereXeTaL the ProvidesPackage is after the \input command.

@UlrikeFischer Ah so it is. Then I don't see the point in lines 1-5. I'll show myself out now.

Weird question
Is the top line in a thicker font then the bottom line, or am I seeing things?

@JosephWright just watched last of the RI Christmas lectures:-)

(I don't want to go chasing down how to fix an issue if I'm just seeing things)

9:08 PM
@Canageek looks a bit thicker but hard to tell from a bitmap \showoutput is your friend:-)

@DavidCarlisle what does RI mean?

@LaTeXereXeTaL @LaTeXereXeTaL it's a trick use so that it does \ProvidesFile in latex and nothing in plain tex.
@UlrikeFischer Royal Institution, annual series of (usually 3) lecture aimed at 11-16 year olds in the original lecture theatre used by Faraday and others (but this year filled with screens and a virtual audience) this year in climate change

@DavidCarlisle Are those broadcast on TV?

@LaTeXereXeTaL yes

@DavidCarlisle Last year's lecture by Hannah Fry was outstanding.

9:16 PM
@LaTeXereXeTaL if you look at the top of the input def file you see \csname ekv@tmp\endcsname that does nothing in plain tex if you have directly input the tex file but in latex where it is input via the .sty it does expands to the \ProvidesFile call that you saw in the definition
@LaTeXereXeTaL yes this years probably wasn't the best but they did well to put something on at all given the circumstances

@DavidCarlisle !!! THIS IS USEFUL

@DavidCarlisle I wish PBS here in the States could broadcast them. I only get to see them on YouTube.

AHhh there it is
.....\TU/NewCM10-Regular.otf(0)/m/n/10.95 a
.....\glue(\spaceskip) 3.64635 plus 1.82318 minus 1.21545
.....\TU/NewCM10-Book.otf(0)/m/n/10.95 a

I wonder if BritBox broadcasts them...
@DavidCarlisle I blame my ignorance on having never once used Plain TeX.
That, and Plain Ignorance.

9:40 PM
I was once again under an unfounded assumption, namely that \ProvidesPackage must be the first line of a package file.

@LaTeXereXeTaL it helps if it is as then if there are any error messages or other log output while reading the file it comes after the Providespackage typeout in the log but it doesn't have to be (but option declarations need to be after that and before \ProcessOptions so they get assigned as options to the correct package

@DavidCarlisle Does that mean I could assign file date and version macros before \ProvidesPackage and subsequently use them elsewhere?

@LaTeXereXeTaL yes that's quite common or of course the date is available to use elsewhere anyway as \@ifpackagelater ...

@DavidCarlisle Wow that solves a lot of problems for me. I was aware of \@ifpackagelater. I'd like to be able to edit the date and version in one place rather than in two or three places.

@LaTeXereXeTaL if it is just for documentation reasons see \GetFileInfo as used in longtable and several other of the tools packages that defines \filedate and \fileversion extracting it from the \ProvidesPackage line

9:51 PM
@DavidCarlisle Right, but that won't work in a file that loads the package will it?

@LaTeXereXeTaL no

@DavidCarlisle That's what I'd like to work around.

@DavidCarlisle what was it about?

@UlrikeFischer @DavidCarlisle Thank you both.

@UlrikeFischer "planet earth" they had three lecturers this year unusually first one on rocks tectonic plates etc and killing off dinosaurs second by an oceanographer on carbon and heat cycles and climate change and whale poo, and todays was by a climate change specialist on social aspects impact of climate change and recycling etc.

1 hour later…
10:59 PM
OK, so I've now found and fixed everything I think so it uses either book or regular as I want it through the full document
Hard part: NOW PICKING WHICH ONE TO USE adlskfaslkjdsa
