@UlrikeFischer ooh

@PauloCereda Aah ein ooh!

@UlrikeFischer By the way... finally a good forwarding. :)

@PauloCereda ?

9:02 AM
@UlrikeFischer parcel woes :)

@PauloCereda Aah. I hope it entertains you well with the story of its travels. ;-)

@UlrikeFischer Too bad the parcel won't get any stamps from where it went through. :)

9:54 AM
@UlrikeFischer Danger of insomniac marmots?

4 hours later…
1:59 PM
@UlrikeFischer IT ARRIVED

@PauloCereda we need some firework!

A: How to draw something only in the magnified area (TikZ: spy library)?

FrédéricThis draws something inside a spy but not by hiding and then showing parts. The spy is given a name (actually, the node part of the spy is named), then you can draw by referencing the node or its anchors. I had to change the format of your spy code, in particular place it within a scope and plac...

In this answer is there a way to decide the region of spy? I mean instead of a spy circle, can I have rectangle of size of my choice?

3:18 PM
Yes. Just replace the beginning of the scope by `\begin{scope}[spy using outlines={magnification=4,minimum width=2cm,minimum
height=3cm, connect spies}]`
@Shamina ^^^^

3:57 PM
@UlrikeFischer ^^^^ and in summer they have this.

@marmot and they have strange buildings ^^

@UlrikeFischer I guess the basement is a big honey liquor storage.

@UlrikeFischer hmmmmmm

@DavidCarlisle ;-).

4:27 PM
@PauloCereda any news on the duck related packages plan you had mentioned?

@Skillmon sorry, I've been drowning in academic activities lately... :(

@PauloCereda like writing your thesis?

@Skillmon oh no

@PauloCereda have to leave :) Good luck!

@marmot but is it fair? Whereas practically every skiing area in the Alps has a piste and/or a lift named „marmotte“, „Murmeltier“ or „marmotta“, ducks are completely ignored. Scandalous! In America there is at least some respect. They have „Marmot Basin Resort“ (Jasper Mountain) but also - although much smaller - „Duck Mountain Resort“ (Saskatchewan). @PauloCereda

4:32 PM
@UlrikeFischer I don't know. Ducks are good at other sports. Where I live, they are very popular:
The Anaheim Ducks are a professional ice hockey team based in Anaheim, California. They are members of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). Since their inception, the Ducks have played their home games at the Honda Center (formerly The Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim). The club was founded in 1993 by The Walt Disney Company as the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, a name based on the 1992 film The Mighty Ducks. Disney sold the franchise in 2005 to Henry and Susan Samueli, who along with then-general manager Brian Burke changed the name of the team to the Anaheim...
@UlrikeFischer As you can see, Ducks are very good at ice hockey.

@marmot hey I was wearing their tee on TUG 2018. :)

@PauloCereda No surprise. You're a duck, aren't you? ;-)

@marmot why yes, of course. :)

@UlrikeFischer Speaking of fairness: compare

@marmot Thanks. Precisely i wanted :)

@egreg ooh duck museum!

@marmot ^^^^

@UlrikeFischer Oh, your washing machine broke?

@egreg ooooh

5:23 PM
@PauloCereda You have got mail :)

6:55 PM
Sigh... ducks and marmots ...

@ChristianHupfer It's an improvement, once there were only ducks :)

@ChristianHupfer There's a LaTeX forum free of reputation farming and furry or feathered animals and no winter bash hats, but talking only LaTeX seems too boring ;-) so it's up to Johannes and me to do support there daily.
4

@StefanKottwitz hopefully you are not implying that the setup here is inherently bad.

7:13 PM
@PauloCereda Oh no! No implying. Even with highscores and badges and shiny achievements and hats every user is focused on support and content only, as the company setup behind is.

@CarLaTeX Our views about improvements differ, apparently
@StefanKottwitz Well, I was there in the past...

@ChristianHupfer We still need friendly people to support.

@StefanKottwitz Well, you can't think of me then... I am not friendly (any longer)

7:28 PM
@CarLaTeX And I am pretty sure I saw a koala recently. ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Here: any non-friendly user gets answers because who answers gets rewarded (rep and badges). Draw things for them. There: answerers and moderators and admins are especially welcoming and friendly, to keep users a while in the forum, before they discover by cross-posts that here they can get everything served on a silver plate with a screenshot.

@StefanKottwitz sorry for not being active enough. But isn't there a user registered with the profile name "Murmeltier"?

@Skillmon I referred to the English language forum on latex.org - perhaps you mean texwelt.de ?

@StefanKottwitz yes, I did.

@Skillmon Also there, there's no duck chat or animal talk, it's just names and technical content.

7:34 PM
@StefanKottwitz but in that forum answering seems harder (it's layout is less clear, imho)

@StefanKottwitz I am not amongst the TikZ - mafia that answers any question about it, regardless whether it is the 10000000th duplicate ... or table stuff. I almost cut also my support for answering tcolorbox questions

@StefanKottwitz On a side note, we've got a first question at LaTeX.net :)

@PhelypeOleinik vade retro

@PauloCereda What?

@PhelypeOleinik no PT-BR for me :)

7:39 PM
@PauloCereda Snob ;-)
@PauloCereda (Although I must admit that it feels strange asking for a MWE in portuguese :P)

@PhelypeOleinik Snob? If you hear what I heard from our people during TUG...

@PauloCereda Just kidding :)
@PauloCereda I couldn't go, unfortunately :/

@StefanKottwitz I fully agree about the "silver plate" but, speaking seriously, I find TeX.SE more convenient than the forums. I often have difficulties in identifying the answer which satisfy my needs there (also on the Italian one).

@PauloCereda What was so bad?

@Skillmon latex.org remained with the classical web forum layout and features. No sense to compete with StackExchange. But it can change to q&a layout (as texwelt.de) at any time if desired.

7:43 PM
@PhelypeOleinik It's a long story. Drop me a line if you would like to hear, though.

@PhelypeOleinik Wow! I did not think that would happen as it was ignored in the Brazilian TUG meeting and never got support.

@StefanKottwitz on a per-user basis or as a whole?

@Skillmon As a whole, and only if there are interested users.

@PauloCereda In another TUG, when I manage to go, I'll ask you :)

@StefanKottwitz I'd be interested, because I don't focus too much on a specific topic in TeX, I just answer what I can answer at that moment. Sometimes look deeper into stuff if the mood fits. And browsing the forum-style seems to take longer to find all the latest questions. But I certainly don't want to force this on other users!

7:47 PM
@StefanKottwitz I check it once in a never to see if there's anything there. I almost jumped off my chair when I saw it. What do you mean by "never got support"?

@PhelypeOleinik Sure. :) If you want the full picture, send me an email. :)

@PauloCereda Okay, will do soon :)

@Skillmon Seeing the latest post is easy: latex.org/forum/search.php?search_id=active_topics
@PhelypeOleinik I could not go to the TUG meeting because of our newborn baby. I asked some Brazilian TUG friends to announce it. Never got feedback about that and never saw that there's anyone interested in the Brazilian TeX community.
@PhelypeOleinik With a Brazilian friend who's a translator I translated and TeXed 400 pages of the TeX FAQ to Brazilian Portuguese, but again, no feedback.

@StefanKottwitz hm about that... better poke you in private. :)

@PhelypeOleinik No users, I guess. And no worries, it was an idea and worth the effort.

7:56 PM
@StefanKottwitz oh you are offline... :(

@PauloCereda poke me

@StefanKottwitz hm poked.

@StefanKottwitz and the editor's markup is horrible...

8:13 PM
@StefanKottwitz It is certainly true that a non-negligible fraction of users come because of the silver tablet. Yet there is also a number of users who only post a screen shot in their first question, and in the subsequent posts they post codes of improving quality. I guess it is hard to discern these two groups on the basis of their first question.

8:49 PM
@Skillmon Nobody needs. As everybody is here, I don't change markup or features there. It's easy though, I did it for the German, French, and Brazilian (test) site.
@Skillmon Our friends on texnique.fr are active, it just depends on questions coming in.
@Skillmon German and French fellows liked having a native TeX q&a site, I'm happy about that. PT-BR is a hm thing I learned. :-)

^^^ @PhelypeOleinik

@StefanKottwitz I like the fact that there are viable non-SE hosted alternatives. But the HTML-like markup of inline code feels very clumsy (and I'm not a mouse type of person).

9:07 PM
@AlanMunn Try again, how is it now?

@StefanKottwitz No change for me.

@AlanMunn Ok. And if you refresh now?

@StefanKottwitz Yes, that works fine. Muito bom. :)

@AlanMunn No problem. First day I notices a human visiting the site, so I renewed the SSL certificate :-)

There's still one panel un-localized:

9:19 PM
@AlanMunn Thanks! Without users though, latex.net.br/osqa/ and latex.net.br/faq/ will go down anyway. But with a fresh certificate thanks to you today. :-)

@StefanKottwitz Well with snobs like @PauloCereda who are only willing to show off their English, its fate is sealed. ;-)
@StefanKottwitz There are some other curiosities about the site too. The views marker on the questions page use "visualizaçãoes" which overruns the square it's in. The welcome banner also hasn't completely translated (still says "welcome to") and in the right hand panel, the "most recently updated questions" link is also still in English.
@StefanKottwitz Clicking on a user name, e.g. felipe, from the Users page leads to NoReverseMatch at /users/195/felipe and a huge page of error reporting.
@StefanKottwitz And all the badge descriptions are still in English.

@AlanMunn That was set up only as a demonstration site at the occasion of the Rio TUG meeting to see if Brazilian users would be interested in having a site in their own language. No users interested, so I did not continue with fine-tuning.
@AlanMunn For now I only support in German and French: texnique.fr/osqa/badges and texwelt.de/wissen/abzeichen

9:34 PM
@StefanKottwitz Mais felizmente não tem nenhum pato. :)
@StefanKottwitz Ah, I see. Sorry for the noise then. I thought this was a site that was starting up for real.

@AlanMunn It was starting up for real! So thanks for feedback. No idea if somebody wants to push and to use it, so I kept in online to age a bit in google, since at the end the search engine traffic keeps a forum alive (in the meaning of getting questions)

@StefanKottwitz Right. It does take a while for people to find out about these things. And I would have thought there would be interest. But TUG might not be the best place for gauging the interest, since most people at TUG would already know a lot of TeX and therefore not really see the need for a site.

9:52 PM
A user interface question: I have some commands for a class that typically would be set by the user, but would be (relatively) fixed for each particular user. Right now I've put them into a .cfg file that gets loaded AtBeginDocument, and this works, but some users want to override the config file in a particular user document. At the moment they can do that by issuing the setting commands after \begin{document} but that's both unintuitive and conceptually unsatisfying. Suggestions?

@DavidCarlisle "(...) also never use the math italic font for multi-letter identifiers" I never heard about that but is nice to know - many of us should learn from you, big thanks!

@manooooh you shouldn't need to be told, when people post images of examples doing that you should feel the pain just looking at it:-)
@AlanMunn can't they use \AtBeginDocument{some setting} ? (but I always moan to @WillRobertson that you have to do that for unicode-math

10:38 PM
@AlanMunn oi

@AlanMunn ele fala inglês?

11:13 PM
@DavidCarlisle Well I'd actually like to avoid the whole AtBeginDocument thing altogether, although maybe I can't.
@PauloCereda :)

@DavidCarlisle ???
@DavidCarlisle hahaha, what happens is that since everyone does it, I was used to seeing it and using it (except words that refer to math, like max, mod, etc.)

11:54 PM
@AlanMunn hard to say in general, why do you need to delay the confifg file to begon document?
@manooooh just showing I complain about multi letter words and math italic every few weeks
