Q: What exactly is leading?

an0Wikipedia: In typography, leading ( /ˈlɛdɪŋ/) refers to the distance between the baselines of successive lines of type. By this definition, isn't it the same thing as line height? But in the following examples in the same wikipedia page, it seems leading is extra space between lines, n...

Hi all, do you know what can cause the space issue here: tex.stackexchange.com/a/426757/2891? I think it must be some wrong font parameter, but I don't know where to look.

10:04 AM
@michal.h21 It only happens with the specific font.
\documentclass[11pt]{article}%
\RequirePackage[T1]{fontenc}
\renewcommand{\rmdefault}{ptm} %ok
%\renewcommand{\rmdefault}{fav}%nok

\begin{document}
\textbf{test, space}, test, \textit{text} text with spaces
\end{document}
@michal.h21 A more serious error. With texlive 2018 make4ht file gives this error:
d:\texlive\2018\texmf-dist\scripts\make4ht\make4ht:62: attempt to index local 'formatter' (a nil value)
@michal.h21 But it could be due to something local, I didn't test yet one another pc.

10:34 AM
@UlrikeFischer I know, I think there must be some issue with fav fonts
@UlrikeFischer this doesn't look good,

@michal.h21 the extensions and the formats folder are missing in texlive 2018.

@UlrikeFischer ah, that's bad. they are in the zip file I submitted to CTAN, so it seems like an issue with installing these directories in correct places in the TEXMF tree

10:51 AM
@michal.h21 They are in the doc-folder. This can happen, write to the texlive list ...

@UlrikeFischer thanks, I will write to Karl

I somehow want to close this question as unclear but it is not completely unclear.

@UlrikeFischer I don't find that distressing at all!

@DavidCarlisle I wasn't thinking of you ;-)

12:55 PM
@PhelypeOleinik Are we playing "follow the leaders"?

1:19 PM
@Skillmon So then don't vote to close. We have a general tradition here of being quite tolerant with new users and give them some time to respond to comments. The question isn't really that unclear.

@AlanMunn I did vote though. The default spacing should be somewhat narrow so the issue probably lies elsewhere. He didn't react for 5 days now. If he reacts I'm happy to be the first reopen vote, but as of now, I'd close it.

@Skillmon Ah, I didn't notice the date.

@StevenB.Segletes Ouch, I spammed the "Active" tab. Sorry :P
@StevenB.Segletes I was searching something about leaders, but there was not tag to this, so I though it would be useful to create one...

1:34 PM
@PhelypeOleinik Oh, no worries. It was fun to watch.

@StevenB.Segletes LOL
@StevenB.Segletes I added a few questions to it to populate a little :)
@StevenB.Segletes I stopped now :)

@PhelypeOleinik I think there is a lot of gold to be mined via leaders. I need to study the techniques more. Thanks for creating a tag.

@StevenB.Segletes You're welcome :) Indeed, they are quite useful.

Anyone knowing a free font which looks like Luicada Sans that I can use in LaTeX (preferably pdfLaTeX)?

I want to make new command with an argument. I want to generate $\mathcal{D}_{\ell,0}[\Bbb{F}_n]$ with the command \newcommand{\tzdf}{\mathcal{D}_{#1,0}[\Bbb{F}_n]}, where \ell is suppose to be the argument. It doesn't work; what am I doing wrong?

@StevenB.Segletes that one requires you to buy a license from TUG to actually use it as far as I understand...

@Skillmon Sorry. I was just doing a simple search and came across it.

@user193319 did you use the macro in math mode?

1:59 PM
Yes. I typed in \tzdf{\ell}. It almost worked.

@michal.h21 I think the problem is that favr8r.tfm doesn't contain any fontdimens. With latex it is not a problem as pdftex records favr8t in the dvi (and this tfm has fontdimens), but dvilualatex resolves the references to virtual fonts and records the raw font.

@JosephWright no we are in a management training session.. will have a quick look...

@JosephWright Oh someone listened to me ;-)

@JosephWright just looked at the comments, does that mean the version of docstrip in github would be OK?

2:06 PM
@DavidCarlisle Seems to be: if I drop it in, the only issue is that the strange char also needs to be defined in the driver so one can actually typeset the docs

@Skillmon I figured it out. It should be "\newcommand{\tzdf}[1]{\mathcal{D}_{#1,0}[\Bbb{F}_n]}" rather than "\newcommand{\tzdf}{\mathcal{D}_{#1,0}[\Bbb{F}_n]}" Notice the former has [1] in it.

@user193319 overlooked that. Note that you can mark inline code with `

@DavidCarlisle I'm just trying to tighten up the .tex file business: once that is done, perhaps we do need PL3

2:37 PM
Little tikz question: I use .. controls ++(ang_start:len_start) and ++(ang_end:len_end) .. quite a lot. when combining these parts the tangents need to line up and ang_new need to be ang_start +180. Do we have any why to access ang_end of the latest control point? NB: I don't want to save all the angs in macro names.

Finally got my emacs setup the way I like it http://thevaultoftheatomicspaceage.tumblr.com/post/172957449150
@daleif I tried to understand but couldn't. Are you asking the reason or how to circumvent the issue

4:05 PM
@percusse trying to see if there is a better way to specify it such that if I adjust ang_end I can have it automatically adjust the next ang_start.
Here's an image of a drawing I just made

@percusse Any thoughts on what's causing this: tex.stackexchange.com/q/426801/2693

That strange leg shape is a curve made with about 20 helper points and the path between each point, is a bezier curve with control points at each end. To get a smooth overall curve, the tangents at the connecting ends should be equal but in opposite directions.
@percusse so basically I just wanted to know if we new information about the last used control points.

@JosephWright just saw the checkin. Been at a "performance appraisal" training day all day (actually it was a lot better than most such days I've been on:-)

@percusse I know one can access the data as a post action (there is a nice answer on the site giving a style that visualizes where the control points are), but not whether we can access them during building the path

Do close votes hang around forever if the question does not receive enough close votes?

4:21 PM
@HaraldHanche-Olsen No. They expire after some time.
31
Q: Why do close votes expire?

ripper234I nominated this question to be closed as a dup. I see that two other people upvoted my comment, so they might have voted to close it as well. Now, we didn't gather enough votes, and all close votes expired ... and I can't re-vote to close. What is the motivation behind expiring close votes .....

@AlanMunn Ah, thanks. I was looking around in help files to no avail.

Quick 'n easy question for TikZperts: Why does `\draw[comp] (H13.south){}+(-0.25,0) -- (H1.north){}+( 0.25,0);` respect the offset in the start coordinate but not the end coordinate?
Is there a way of getting TikZ to respect both without resorting to `calc`?
Also, why is this chat not respecting backquotes for code formatting?

@COTO it does normally like: \foo

foo

@StefanKottwitz @JosephWright Seems to be a real person, but all posts seem to be just jibber jabber. Just to be on the aware of list.

4:31 PM
Hm. calc

let me try \draw[comp] (H13.south){}+(-0.25,0) -- (H1.north){}+( 0.25,0);

\draw[comp] (H13.south){}+(-0.25,0) -- (H1.north){}+( 0.25,0);

@COTO worked for me (copied off your comment)

And for me. Ah well.

@COTO If you put a linefeed in the chat it doesn't respect the backticks any more I think.

4:34 PM
@COTO can't help with the actual tikz question:-)

@DavidCarlisle But you have the TiKZ gold badge...

@AlanMunn yes

I've seen some people hack it with [xshift = ...] on the coordinates. I'll do that. Just thought I might be missing something obvious.

@COTO Any reason not to use calc?
\draw[comp] ($(H13.south)+(-0.25,0)$) -- ($(H1.north)+( 0.25,0)$);

4:51 PM
@DavidCarlisle Hopefully .tex file list now right and everything going where it belongs

@egreg I wonder where I have seen that before? :D

@mickep Isn't that how these things are usually conducted?

@HaraldHanche-Olsen Perhaps in Norway! ;)

@DavidCarlisle I David. Does the offer still stand :)? (tex.stackexchange.com/questions/425632) If not then I will try to reach the package authors.

6:06 PM
@HaraldHanche-Olsen True story: at an Icelandic friend's qualifying paper defence, one of his committee members asked a question and he replied "Why would anyone want to ask such a question".

@egreg Are you going to Vinitaly?

@Dr.ManuelKuehner I guess so I'll look in a bit:-)

6:31 PM
Does anyone know a free font which looks like this:

@Skillmon What font is it that you show?

@mickep it is called DTL Argo

@Skillmon And DTL Argo itself is not an option? License problem?

@mickep it's for advertising (creating a flyer), I don't know whether free usage is fine in that case. The font's license is about 100 € per weight.

@DavidCarlisle Thanks a lot!

6:43 PM
@mickep www.dutchtypelibrary.nl/PDF/pricelists/singleuser/DTL%20Argo_prlst.pdf
@mickep I'm not sure whether it is ok to download the font at fontsgeek at all.

@Dr.ManuelKuehner \def\subparagraphformat#1{\textcolor{red}{\thesubparagraph\autodot}\enskip}

@Skillmon Oh, I don't know either. I just searched and was led to that site. I hope it is not some pirate site :(

@Johannes_B Thanks, I noticed.

@mickep have you seen the latest xkcd?

@DavidCarlisle Thanks! The Chet Baker album did just end. How did you know that? :D
(OK, I admit I just got Rick rolled)

6:57 PM
@mickep check the real latest xkcd:-)

@DavidCarlisle Haha! But really, I still get happy hearing that song!

7:35 PM
@CarLaTeX I just see the effects of it on people trying to get into the bus.

8:13 PM
@CarLaTeX ^^^ our vinitaly ;-)

yo'
What am I doing at work?!

@UlrikeFischer Looks very good!

@yo' working ?!

yo'
@Skillmon yeah, but it's 22.25 you see :(

@UlrikeFischer shame you couldn't get any of the good stuff from Australia
@yo' we expect at least a couple more hours from you

8:45 PM
@yo' I'm somewhat working, too. But I guess I'll stop that for now. Good night everybody!

@DavidCarlisle I'll try it tomorrow at work! Thanks!

@egreg you want to steal a tick (before I get it?)
@UlrikeFischer ^^

9:14 PM
@DavidCarlisle It's a known issue of listings.

9:24 PM
@egreg seems that way, can't we stop it adding a breakpoint at the end, seems ... suboptimal.

@DavidCarlisle You're welcome to adopt listings. ;-)

@egreg maybe I'll get @JosephWright to do just that

Inverse kerning problem: Comey becomes Corney. (Friend saw this on Spanish TV),
2

@AlanMunn Maybe Trump was upset because of the keming, when he fired Comey.
@AlanMunn He thought the name was Corney and felt betrayed.

9:40 PM
@DavidCarlisle Looks as if I did it ;-)

@UlrikeFischer you'll grow up to be like @egreg, what a terrible fate.

9:57 PM
@samcarter Since you seem to be online, may I bug you with a question: can one have a standalone document that uses the beamer settings (especially the font) but crops its content? (I can also ask on the main site, I'm just wondering if you know off the top of your hat.)

@marmot There is a special class option beamer for the standalone class, but if I remember correctly, this does not crop the content.

@samcarter Yes, that's what I also found. Thanks! (I have some TikZ pictures that take rather long to be compiled, but if I just compile them with standalone, the fonts wont't match, and with the beamer option they won't get cropped. And I also do not want to use externalize...)

@marmot Does your tikz picture contain math? Otherwise maybe a normal standalone with \sffamily produces text similar enough to beamer

10:13 PM
@samcarter Yes, thanks. (I may still ask a question on the main site since I could not find an answer there, and this might be useful...)

@marmot Question on the main site is probably a good idea. Maybe someone can also port the math font ...
@marmot I'm off for today - getting late here...

@samcarter Thanks again. This is not urgent. Good night! (Here it is still bright and sunny... ;-)

10:29 PM
@marmot Don't rub it in. 0°C and rain/snow mix. :)

@AlanMunn I think that this would be a good reason to go hibernating. ;-)

@marmot Yes indeed. :)

@AlanMunn Probably now you understand why marmots like honey liquor so much. ;-)
