@Sebastiano first, hi! How you doing? I used to do it very often in my high school, but I'm with you: the notation seems right :):)

3:06 AM
May I ask why this answer have so many votes, if it is super duplicated considering another answers?

3:55 AM
@manooooh This is because all the stackexchange sites are just a big sociology experiment. ;-) More seriously, votes do not really represent the quality of a post. (I am not saying there is anything wrong with these answers!) Actually, many of the posts with the most votes are very basic, which means that many can use them.

4:31 AM
@marmot lol! So let's ask about how to enum three items instead of two!!!

5:31 AM
@Sebastiano It rained a lot! Ciao!

5:52 AM
@marmot Indeed, in my opinion, that question should have been closed

@CarLaTeX Yes and no. My interpretation was that the user wants to create something that resembles that symbol (and use it in math mode). Or course, I can remove the answer, but the answer makes it very clear that this is not the logo.

@marmot no, don't remove the answer, however if the OP wants to use it in math mode, perhaps (s)he wanted only a turned G with another G overlapping

2 hours later…
7:49 AM
@marmot Did you got my mail?

8:28 AM
@manooooh hi, let's say it's okay :-) but actually I'm very tired and very busy with school. I woke up now: last night I was waiting for the internet connection to restart, but the connection only arrived this morning. A hug.
@DavidCarlisle I apologize for last night but the connection went away suddenly. it came back this morning but it's like a light bulb.

@UlrikeFischer, @DavidCarlisle I'm working on the catcode table business

@DavidCarlisle This picture I took last night from a high school textbook. I highlighted the equal at the end and beginning in brown.
@JosephWright Good morning and good work.

1 hour later…
9:38 AM
@Sebastiano so it's not just you:-) As I say I have seen similar duplication in Russian examples but not elsewhere. I would not use it personally.

Quack. :)

10:00 AM
@PauloCereda Ooh, a PhDuck!

10:14 AM
OOH PAT IS HERE
Hi @topskip

Wasn't there a meta.tex.stackexchange.com a few years ago?
Hi @PauloCereda!

@topskip they changed the layout for the entire network... but the link works...

I see. I still have the 700 GB big CTAN archive (as a git repository) which I want to get rid of and I was looking for a place to announce...

@Sebastiano I find the repetition redundant and in some cases misleading. I sometimes use it on the blackboard, but that's a different framework.

@topskip WOW

Jan 12 '16 at 12:15, by David Carlisle
@PauloCereda finished your thesis?

@DavidCarlisle oh no

@PauloCereda you could answer yes:-)

@DavidCarlisle the legend of a never-ending thesis has its own merits. :)

@PauloCereda Ooooh

@CarLaTeX ooh

10:34 AM
@Sebastiano for your hyphenation question, do you have Italian patterns installed, what log do you get for
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}

\showhyphens{matematica}
\usepackage[italian]{babel}
\showhyphens{matematica}

\begin{document}

\end{document}
You should get [] \T1/cmr/m/n/10 matem-at-ica (from US English and then [] \T1/cmr/m/n/10 ma-te-ma-tica from Italian hyphenation patterns.

11:07 AM
@egreg Once in a while, when a long calculation is inerrupted by a page break, I have been known to insert an equals sign at the end of the bottom line before the page break – just to make it clear to the reader that it's not over yet. This is dangerous, though, as page breaks have a way of moving, and this sort of adjustment is hard to automate (I didn't even try that). (@Sebastiano)

1 hour later…
12:14 PM
There goes my plans for integrating with luaotfload.

@KhaledHosny ?

@UlrikeFischer Looks like luaotfload will make my testing workflow unnecessarily harder. Since all I need is a parser for font syntax, and a font database (to be replaced with system libraries at some point), I better just write that code from scratch or copy and strip down the relevant parts from luaotfload.
I don’t like the complexity and over-engineering that luaotfload grew, any way.

12:32 PM
@KhaledHosny You mean because it searches system folders? I'm rather certain that there is an option somewhere to suppress this, and if not it should be not so hard to add it, if you need it. I only won't make this a default. Beside: If you have suggestion to improve the code make a pull request - I'm quite certain that quite a lot in the code can only be explained by the history of the development.
@KhaledHosny Are you speaking about the luaotfload wrapper or the core fontloader?

@UlrikeFischer The luaotfload wrapper, the fontloader is what I’m primarily replacing. Anyway I need some thing reliable, and easily debugged, but luaotfload is neither of these. It is too complex with lots of option for things that should be the default anyway. I prefer simple and fast code, and when faced with several choices choose choose the most sensible one if possible. Providing an option for each and everything is just hand waiving and maintainability nightmare.

@UlrikeFischer No, I didn't get any mail from you...

@marmot Hm. Perhaps in some spam folder? I used the gmail address.

12:53 PM
Good morning to all TeX users :-)
@DavidCarlisle Good morning. I have tried you code  \documentclass{article}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}

\showhyphens{matematica}
\usepackage[italian]{babel}
\showhyphens{matematica}
\usepackage{lipsum}
\begin{document}
\lipsum[1]

\end{document}

@UlrikeFischer Now I found it... was indeed in the spam filter ... no idea why... already replied...

@marmot @UlrikeFischer Hi and good work

@Sebastiano and?

@DavidCarlisle I'm not very fast :-) to write. Now I try with long document.

@Sebastiano an image tells us nothing, what did the log of the version that I posted show.

12:58 PM
@KhaledHosny Well if you have something better put it on the market. But the problem with "choose the most sensible" option is that people have often quite different views about which is the most sensible - as you could see in the discussion about your issue.

@DavidCarlisle Wait a minute. sorry

@UlrikeFischer That is what I’m doing already.

@DavidCarlisle You are great! Work correctly.
@DavidCarlisle %----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
% Change number equations with sections
%----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
\usepackage{chngcntr}

\renewcommand{\theequation}{\thesection-\arabic{equation}}

@marmot answered, but only short, I have now to make lunch ...

@Sebastiano you still didn't show the log output, but assuming you got what I said that you should get for the two \showhyphens, then that means you do have Italian hyphenation patterns installed so the lack of hyphenation in the document you posted on the main site is due to some code you have not shown.

1:05 PM
@DavidCarlisle I use TexWorks. Where I take .log file?

@Sebastiano presumably it's in the same folder as your .pdf (texworks must have a menu option to show it as well)

@DavidCarlisle If I remember correctly I set up TeXworks without output .log file

@Sebastiano no tex always makes a log file.

@DavidCarlisle I have a pdf and Teoria della radiazione.synctex

@Sebastiano where do you see other over and under full box messages (the showhyphens message is with those)

1:10 PM
@DavidCarlisle during the compilation

@Sebastiano well that will do, what did it say:-)

@DavidCarlisle Wait and excuse me very much.

@DavidCarlisle Luigi is writing about harfbuzz on the context list (my question about kannada).

@DavidCarlisle here is not a log file but I have put a dollar sign into my code and I have seen my errors. Thank you so much for your patience.

@UlrikeFischer just saw
@Sebastiano you only needed to post two lines:-)
Underfull \hbox (badness 10000) in paragraph at lines 53--53
[] \OT1/cmr/m/n/12 matem-at-ica
Underfull \hbox (badness 10000) in paragraph at lines 55--55
[] \OT1/cmr/m/n/10 ma-te-ma-tica
@Sebastiano so you do have the hyphenation tables installed.

1:21 PM
@DavidCarlisle Thank you very much. I also have a headache and I'm going to go and get some rest. It's raining here in Sicily and it's also hot. There are days that are hot and then cold and vice versa. Greetings to you and to everyone. I hope to respond to the other messages I have received. Greetings

@Sebastiano if the editor is deleting the log before you have time to look at it, that is crazy. If I was writing a book I would go through the log and check every one of the over and under full box messages and fix the page so the warnings went. You need the log file.

@DavidCarlisle TeXworks should not do that by default...

@PauloCereda I know it isn't emacs, but that's all I know.

@DavidCarlisle :)

1:41 PM
@PauloCereda important investigative journalism from the BBC

1:58 PM
@PauloCereda @DavidCarlisle it is probably miktex/texify, as default miktex adds --clean to the texify call used by "pdflatex+makeindex+bibtex" in texworks (and I loath it ...).

@HaraldHanche-Olsen who cares about the typeset output so long as the log is clean? :-)
Maybe it makes more sense to remove the pdf, then?

@HaraldHanche-Olsen it would be more useful.

3:19 PM
ooh

3 hours later…

@PauloCereda in arara 4 is there a way to define a directive that would act something like a preamble? I would like to be able to list twopdftex in the tex file and not have to specify it with the -p option. Does that make sense?

6:37 PM
@StrongBad Ah you mean something like a metadirective! Not that I can think of, but give me minutes to come up with a solution. :)

@PauloCereda exactly. I basically want to be able to specify the preamble to use within the tex document.
I will ask on the main site so you can get a green tick.

Q: How to create a meta directive in arara?

StrongBadI am using arara to automatically compile some tikz images as standalone files. I have a bunch of these figures and they all have the same set of directives % arara: clean: { extensions: [ aux, bbl, bcf, blg, out, run.xml ] } % arara: pdflatex: { options: [ '-halt-on-error' ], interaction: batch...

Good evening to all users in chat and out chat.
@DavidCarlisle This afternoon I had my head blown off. But do I always have criticisms? But am I the only one? I hope not.
@DavidCarlisle I sincerely wanted if I'm wrong or I see badly. It's true that I have to use a lot of eyewash because I have a dry eye but it seems to me that the point is moved to the left just above the overline command.

@Sebastiano the overline kills the font metric, the dot is placed in the centre as fallback.

@PauloCereda Hello kind Paulo. is very true that TeXworks has the default logs after a compilation. But I do not remember how to restore. To me the important thing is that the compilation works. You're always very kind.
@Skillmon I don't insist but visually the point I think is slightly to the left of the line.

@Sebastiano the point is moved to the centre of the box which \overline{J} results in (which is left of the place where it'll be placed if one uses \dot{J}).

@egreg Dear egreg from middle school when I was doing expressions, and if I don't remember wrongly even in elementary school I would put the same at the end and then at the beginning. I will accept the request and pass it on to my teacher with whom I am collaborating.
@egreg I would always be happy if you could answer my questions as well. It is an honor to have you as a user answering my questions. I always hope after a year that you are not angry with me, because sincerely I will never forget your reproach.

@Sebastiano I'm not angry at all! For that construction I'd use \bar and not \overline

9:23 PM
@Skillmon The reason for this is much clearer now. You were very fair and polite. Some of the sentences they write seem to reprimand you.
@egreg You're always welcome for me. Every additional answer is always a dose of knowledge for me.

@Sebastiano Many people think that \bar draws too short a line; but it's just right.

@egreg The reason for entering overline was because I didn't have full mt2pro characters and I started writing the book with this command. Then at university, I think you know him, he is full professor of Experimental Physics in Catania at the Department of Physics and Astronomy since 1977, if I remember correctly, he uses the overline to indicate the vectors.

@Sebastiano It is high in my list of bad notation, sorry.
@Sebastiano I've never considered anybody so authoritative on notation that I felt compelled to follow their usage. Notation has to be evaluated also on the impact it has on the typographic result. Many vectors would mean many overlines: bad.
@Sebastiano Bad because it makes reading more difficult.
@Sebastiano What one uses on the blackboard should not necessarily reflect in print.
