@PauloCereda My BIOS just warned me that continuing would cause me to fail Windows 8 Certification. It doesn't know the half of it. (Oddly, it didn't complain about my deleting the Windows boot loader. Apparently, you can pass as Windows Certified even without a computer capable of booting Windows. At least, I certainly hadn't offered it an alternative method.) I really don't understand why my BIOS lists so many disks I don't have. I suppose it likes to dream ....
@PauloCereda Will be in shit if the thing won't boot Arch, of course. But, then, I'll be in dire straits in that case anyway and having Windows would hardly help any.
Did something happen to \l_file_internal_name_tl? (Name may not be perfectly correct - this is from memory.) Trying to figure out where I got it from and what's happened to it.

@cfr Don't remember a public variable of that name: perhaps \l__file_internal_tl? WE have made some changes to file support

7:46 AM
Interesting one-page article from the GUST foundry on future work on OTF math fonts

8:06 AM
Article on what publishers observe in terms of package/class/... use is also good

@egreg Dear Prof., I thank you immensely for your kind reply. Infinite thanks.
@JosephWright Good Morning to you

The vertical distance between the symbol and a \widetilde is rather large in \scriptstyle. Is there an easy way to make it smaller?
Consider e.g. $\widetilde{ev}\widetilde{ab} \scriptstyle\widetilde{ev}\widetilde{ab}$

@JosephWright Yes, but it is a bit unclear what this otf-math is actually doing. But it doesn't sound as if it would use combofonts.

@UlrikeFischer Huh?

@egreg it is my pleasure to do as requested:
@DavidCarlisle Blame egreg he is a bad teacher. Wouldn't the expandafter version have the same problem since csname will expand? — percusse 38 mins ago
@UlrikeFischer what do you mean by "doing" here? fonts don't do anything much.
@Bubaya it's a choice of the font designer (mostly)

9:25 AM
@JosephWright That would be it. I have a note marking it as 'mewnol' so it is definitely an internal command. Is there a quick replacement by any chance?

@cfr \l__file_full_name_str I think, though of course that is still internal. (We have some open discussion points on the team list about this.)

cfr
@JosephWright Thank you. I'll try that. Internal but existent beats internal and non-existent. If there's a non-internal alternative, I'd be happy to use it. But I seem to remember there isn't.

@cfr I'm not sure what you are up to so it's hard to say ;)

@JosephWright I used it to get automatic names for externalised TikZ pictures in an answer somewhere, but I've also been using the code. Hang on, I'll see if I can get it.
How can I copy from an X terminal window into another X application without a clipboard?
% RHYBUDD: regex yn l3 experimental
\RequirePackage{etoolbox,currfile,xparse}
\@ifclassloaded{standalone}{\relax}{\RequirePackage{standalone}}

^^ @JosephWright Can't figure out how to make it used the fixed font option, though :(.

@DavidCarlisle @JosephWright They have on page 209 in figure 3 an \input otf-math. This file obviously defines a few commands like \OMtrm and \OMmath but it not clear how they define this commands, the text refer only to unicode-math.

@UlrikeFischer ah you mean an otf-math.tex file I thought you meant OTF Math as a concept:-)

11:16 AM
@UlrikeFischer What @DavidCarlisle said ;)

@cfr Surely you won't have problem in booting Arch. :)

I blame @JosephWright for not having xgalley finished in 1994

@DavidCarlisle ooh
grrr Travis changed a lot of things for specific languages and now half of my build fails.

@PauloCereda I noticed some weird messages in my travis builds but only seemed to change the logs so I ignored

@DavidCarlisle in my case, it was serious: they dropped support for some versions/vendors and my build failed.

1:34 PM
@PauloCereda "sorry sir, the dog travis ate my homework thesis

@DavidCarlisle Quite accurate. :)

@DavidCarlisle It wouldn't happen if titles were first boxed and then unboxed when \everypar is delivered.

@egreg so we can blame Leslie. Still not my fault.
@egreg of course someone will have a long paragraph title (like the entire paragraph) requiring line breaking in math mode and it will stop breaking and they will blame you for suggesting this.

@DavidCarlisle Bad text, I don't care. :-P

1:51 PM
@DavidCarlisle In a sense you do have a point: I wish I'd come across LaTeX when still at school (or indeed perhaps just 'before I was post-docing')
@DavidCarlisle Remind Bruno he had some plan to make it work with 2e?

@JosephWright In the meantime EA has found a new playground

@egreg Yes: to be fair none of the text has really been proof-read
@egreg (@DavidCarlisle) See email :)
@DavidCarlisle Guess I better sort UK-TUG 2017 ...
@DavidCarlisle :)

$ svn commit -a -m "re-arrange comments for issue #24"

Type 'svn help' for usage.
@JosephWright I blame you ^^^^^^

@DavidCarlisle :)
@DavidCarlisle I tend to -p

oddly svn help doesn't tell you that git is spelled 'git'

@DavidCarlisle :)

what does -p do?

@egreg I wonder if I should add some pull request guidelines (cf. l3build)

2:08 PM
@JosephWright If you find the time to

@DavidCarlisle Shows you the lines to commit, so you can check you have the right changes, select which ones to commit interactively, spot that you've left spaces at end of lines, ...

@JosephWright er I had just done emacs tag replace on 250 files, so no thanks:-)

@DavidCarlisle Ah
@DavidCarlisle I do use -a, for example when I've done texlua build.lua save -epdftex,xetex,luatex,uptex,ptex m3expl001 m3expl003 :)
@egreg I already have the l3build ones so it's not that much work, but of course we will end up with 'What Joseph likes' as the guidelines :)

@JosephWright :-)

@JosephWright seeing as the main reason for the guidelines is "stop bothering Joseph" your description seems reasonable.

@DavidCarlisle "Also, Paulo's PR are wacky". :)

@PauloCereda :)

@JosephWright soon we will have nice updates. :)

An answer about british ships in the 18th century (Why were British ships not of the same quality as French and Spanish ships until the latter part of the 18th century?) and in the second to last paragraph i thought: Oh no, templates?

@Johannes_B :-)

Did everyone spot the 'most bonkers' article in TUGboat?

@JosephWright tell us more :)

@PauloCereda tug.org/TUGboat/Contents/contents38-2.html and look for something that sounds bonkers

@JosephWright ooh hold on
@JosephWright ooh beer?

3:58 PM
@PauloCereda No, that's not bonkers

@JosephWright oh I am lost

@PauloCereda See Skype

@JosephWright sure, hold on :)

@JosephWright latex news?

@DavidCarlisle :)

4:05 PM
@JosephWright w and W?

Speaking of TUGBoat and the TUG meeting: has anyone every seen MlBibTeX 'in the wild'?

@JosephWright Looking at the comments here, I'd say no: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/334969/…

@CarLaTeX Yes, just wondered

@JosephWright No, but JMH has told about it uncountably many times.

@egreg Yes, I know: at least with L3 (almost) all of the code is somewhere public
@egreg I'd love to see it, if only as I suspect it's not the right way to go and I'll like to know

4:26 PM
@barbarabeeton I don't have the printed tugboat yet so I'm reading the pdf. There in the article from page 218 the tt (?) font looks broken:

@UlrikeFischer It's OK in print

@UlrikeFischer I see them OK

@JosephWright I thought so, I doubt that @barbarabeeton wouldn't have seen and corrected it ;-). Actually it looks okay in the adobe reader, but not in the browser.

4:48 PM
@UlrikeFischer -- what you've got there is indeed ugly! looks like an entirely different font than what's printed. (but it's not cmtt in any event; it was run with xelatex, and used a separate macro file prepared by the author, that i never downloaded -- karl did the production work. i'll let him know.)

5:02 PM
@barbarabeeton But as I wrote later: in the adobe reader (and also in sumatra) it looks fine (as far as I can say it regarding all the curious symbols used ;-)), it is only in the browser plug-in that it looks wrong.

@UlrikeFischer -- more info. i'm checking the tug production directory, and in the pertinent area i see a list of five fonts: UbuntuMono-X.ttf (where X = B. BI. R. and RI) and UbuStereo-Regular.ttf. i'm not familiar with those fonts, but the "Mono" sounds suspicious, and we know that the \tt in the article is not cm. i haven't checked the pdf to see what fonts are used. but i'm glad to know that sumatra shows them okay; i use adobe reader to check copy, and as you confirm, they're okay there.

5:17 PM
@barbarabeeton In the Murzynovski paper I don't see UbuntuMono, but only UbuStereo

@egreg -- thanks. what other (probable) tt fonts do you see mentioned there?

@barbarabeeton That's the screenshot from Safari. No other tt font.

@egreg -- okay. that matches what's seen by adobe reader and in print. i'm not familiar with the ubuntu fonts. is UbuStereo a monospace font?

@barbarabeeton No idea, never heard before.
@barbarabeeton Reading Karl's production notes, I guess it's GM’s creation

@egreg Indeed

5:31 PM
@egreg -- oh, my. have just reread. that had faded from my memory. thanks. (i now understand karl's parting word: "Beware")

3 hours later…
8:23 PM
@egreg I've been away fighting git, but glad to see the tick for weird dots in fractions went to a deserving answer.

8:35 PM
@DavidCarlisle :)

@JosephWright I should have guessed but where travis has a config setting not to build on branches it means all branches including master :-)

9:33 PM
Hi!
I'm using tikzpicture to write some text over an image.
Does anyone of you know how to position a text node so that the last letter of a possible variable-length sentence (of that text node) is always at the same distance from the right margin of the document?

9:55 PM
@DavidCarlisle Just because of arcane use of \hbox and \zz

Hi, if I want to use \usepackage{splitidx} in lualatex, do I have to run a tool like splitindex.pl manually, or will lualatex do it for me?
`/usr/local/texlive/2017/bin/x86_64-linux/splitindex --version` returns splitindex.pl 0.1
Copyright (c) 2002 Markus Kohm <kohm@gmx.de>
is that really the latest version? Looks quite old to me...

ppr
Short question: I was using for a long time \hfill \cite{key} at the end of a "quote" environment to print the reference on the right. I now use memoir class and it has a \sourceatright command which does the same. Do I have any reason to change all my hfill commands to \sourceatright or is it exactly the same behavior behind?

11:23 PM
@JonasStein texdoc splitindex sugests you don't need the perl version as there is a lua implementation (top of page 4) never used any version of that package though so I can't say much about it:-)
@ppr not looked at \sourceright but certainly zzz\hfill \cite{key} isn't guaranteed to put the citation at the right, so you may want to change.
