The fourth and finest Doctor, Tom Baker, has reprised the role to finish a Who serial scuppered in 1979 by strike action at the BBC. Shada, penned by Hitchhiker's Guide author Douglas Adams, was supposed to close Doctor Who's 17th season. Location filming in Cambridge and a studio session were completed but the strike nixed further work and the project was later shelved entirely for fear it might affect the Beeb's Christmas-time productions. The remaining parts have been filled in with animation and the voice of 83-year-old Baker, although he also filmed a scene. BBC Worldwide has now relea

Too quiet today...

@PauloCereda My train is even a couple of minutes ahead of schedule!

@egreg ooh spooky

2 hours later…
yo'
12:54 PM
@egreg are you in Ylati then?

1:30 PM
@yo' Once in a while it can happen. I’ll wait for tonight’s revenge.

1:54 PM
@egreg Usually it happens when you are late :)

2:27 PM
The review symbol in the top bar finally got changed!

@samcarter we could make some silly request like adding a duck icon. :)

@PauloCereda a special queue for duck-approved questions :)

Q: A proposal to include a duck in our background image

Paulo CeredaNowadays, TeX and friends are far beyond of just academic usage. I would like to propose the inclusion of a greyscale duck (courtesy of tikzducks) in our background image. This is the current image: The following image is a concept sketch. Note how graceful the duck is when compared to the oth...

@PauloCereda I think, it would a good idea to upvote both ;)

@TeXnician ooh this is deliciously paradoxal. :)

@PauloCereda Great idea! Voted :)

@samcarter <3

@samcarter Those unnoticeable edits...

2:53 PM
@TeXnician LOL

@PauloCereda If you come to Milan you must stay here: tripadvisor.it/…

In other news, if anybody needs a screen recorder that works on Wayland, I recommend: github.com/foss-project/green-recorder
@CarLaTeX ooh

@PauloCereda I hope that SSR (simplescreenrecorder) will be ported one day. It's great software.

@PauloCereda It's true, my colleagues from Veneto stay there and they told me that!

@TeXnician agreed, it was by far my favourite screen recorder. But since Fedora migrated to Wayland, it stopped working (as well as other recorders). :(
@CarLaTeX How many ducks did they bring home?

2:58 PM
@PauloCereda Only one per person :)

@PauloCereda They discussed it once, but without real solution: github.com/MaartenBaert/ssr/issues/431

@TeXnician All these grey colours of the meta site needed some colour :)

@samcarter I found the "No" answer much less attractive without the duck.

@TeXnician Interesting read, thank you! I wasn't aware of such nuisances.

@PauloCereda Essentially it says: Let's let Wayland become perfect and then we'll see whether they managed to implement a screen cast interface. One of the disadvantages of FOSS :(

3:06 PM
@TeXnician Indeed. :(

@TeXnician :) I rolled that one back - maybe a bit too much voter influencing..

@samcarter Now the "No" answer is unattractive enough :)

@samcarter: I admit the question is probably not suitable for the site, but I think it's a way of breaking the ice once in a while. I don't like when, for one reason or another, we regulars forget about the friendly spark that made this community so special.

@PauloCereda My suggested duck image for the site ^^

@DavidCarlisle I see a snake, not a duck. :)

3:33 PM
@PauloCereda I must disagree, I find it perfectly suitable. Even if the duck is replaced by something else, I think it is a good idea to have more atypical usage of tex in the background image. Besides the great community, one of the things that make this site so addictive to me is to see what crazy things can be done in tex.

@samcarter ^^ :)

@PauloCereda One could do infinite recursion with this :)

@samcarter ooh I like this idea
@samcarter fractal ducks :)

@PauloCereda :)

Typed "fractal duck", wasn't disappointed. :)

3:42 PM
@PauloCereda can you reverse engineer the formula?

@PauloCereda Search engines very rarely disappoint when searching for duck. (however searching for Christmas duck images was a huge mistake...)

@StefanKottwitz I wish I could. :)

@samcarter then google "latex duck"

@CarLaTeX ^^ Google Images :D

4:09 PM
@PauloCereda latex duck LOL

4:54 PM
hi everyone, helping the OWASP crowd out. Do you know of a request/response (as in SSL handshake type communication) tikz graph type?

@ForkrulAssail a FSM? :)

mmmm, not exactly, more, request/response, guess I could just use this with some layout customization.

@ForkrulAssail I seem to recall a UML diagram that might be suitable for the job.

guess I just need blocks with some nice alignment

@ForkrulAssail the very UML diagram, just don't remember the name. :)
Hold on.

4:59 PM
I'll do some more texample browsing :)

@ForkrulAssail Look for sequence diagram, it might bring something along those lines. :)

@PauloCereda -- the one in the middle is a rubber chicken, not a duck of any kind.

@barbarabeeton Google is evil!

yeah, just stumbled on this one

@PauloCereda -- others have said so as well.

5:01 PM
Helps to rubberduck in the LaTeX room :)

@ForkrulAssail we ducks are good with generic sutff. :)

Helps to rubberduck in the LaTeX room :)

@barbarabeeton indeed. :)

@PauloCereda mas muito bom na tradução.

@DavidCarlisle luck. :)

5:03 PM
@PauloCereda fé

@DavidCarlisle oh

@PauloCereda oh (<--- translated:-)

yo'
5:33 PM

@yo' -- presumably whoever recorded that should get a traffic ticket for not paying proper attention to the road.

End of semester is when you see a run-for-all of students whose professors had told them Latex was cool and provided weird templates promising they would end their worries with formatting and also produce “beautiful documents”.

yo'
@barbarabeeton fortunately not in my country :-)

@yo' -- meaning that a driver doesn't have to keep eyes on road?

yo'
@barbarabeeton it's nowhere defined strictly. The only thing is you can't have a phone call with the phone in your hand.

5:48 PM
@yo' -- but taking a picture with a cell phone is okay? oh, well, as my husband says, if they don't catch you at it, it's not illegal. (unwritten motto of rhode island drivers.)

yo'
@barbarabeeton well, there's no strict rule other that the one above. But of course there's something like "you have to pay your attention to the driving", but it doesn't mean you cannot tune your radio, for instance.

@Joseph :D

@yo' -- it must be admitted that the display wouldn't change for a bit over a minute. (i assume you were paying careful attention, and not driving on a curvy mountain road.)

To the duckmobile!

@PauloCereda, pesky students all the way down.
Now forsook, left to themselves, they are clueless when some bureaucratic authority tells them to change the very same templates that were supposed to be a typographical panacea. “Weren't those professors supposed to know better?”, they think, but dare not speak. What they utter, instead, when prompted to learn in a week profound concepts such as a MWE, “class”, and “package”, is: “Latex is buggy”.

5:58 PM
@Joseph "use this interesting code of mine and gaze upon beauty itself!"

@PauloCereda, maybe someday I'll write a kafka-esque short story about the moldy corridors between the librarians' desks, the supervisors' hubris, and the jury's impending typographical doom.
something like Gaiman's books, though I find them too gloomy to behold.

@Joseph Machadian-style, please. :)

I'd rather see "O cortiço" turned into "A universidade".

@Joseph Ouch, that hurts me in so many levels.

Well, it's life... (I guess only you understood the joke.)
but take a look at the last page here: joaocamillopenna.files.wordpress.com/2015/03/…

6:09 PM
@Joseph oh :)

:-)
most of their books are set in latex. I've got the Song of Songs in bilingual Greek set in Walbaum. Priceless and cheap.

@Joseph Fantastic
I've never head of iron lungs!

Places selling this for 5 bucks. I'd buy one just to "gaze at the beauty", just like Brehms Tierleben: biodiversitylibrary.org/item/102895#page/7/mode/1up

6:25 PM
@Joseph Fraktur-like font. :)

6:39 PM
@PauloCereda, not "like", it's the real thing. Metal type. You can feel the font on your fingertips.
8 bucks each.
1922 edition.

@Joseph Wow!

10:14 PM
@egreg I'm disappointed with you:-)

10:49 PM
@DavidCarlisle Because my answer works and yours doesn't?

@egreg no I fixed my answer but didn't post post it as you'd beaten me by a couple of minutes:-) but I had \setbox\zz\hbox{/} ... \xleaders\copy\zz\hskip\wd\zz .. \skip_horizontal:N \l_mymodule_slashskip_skip but thought you'd moan about the lack of l3 purity, but then saw you'd posted the same:-)

@DavidCarlisle Oh, the slash one! Nice job by Marcin.
@DavidCarlisle We need L3 to start coping with leaders and other things.
