@StefanKottwitz You called?

1 hour later…
6:46 AM
@PauloCereda your cousin turned up I see

6:57 AM
@JosephWright Can we have a tag twenty-seconds-cv and automatically have a huge Don't use that crap, your question will be deleted message while posting?

@UlrikeFischer ooh :)
@DavidCarlisle not related. :)

@PauloCereda go back to sleep

@DavidCarlisle I have to go to SP. :(

If i say "here you can use my hammer" i let you use it, i don't give you the right to paint it pink and draw rainbows and unicorns on it.

@Johannes_B ooh hammers

7:07 AM
@PauloCereda :-)
@PauloCereda Shaky bus once more today?

@Johannes_B Yep. :)

@egreg congratulations (maybe you deserved those 100k more than the 500k here!)

@DavidCarlisle :P

2 hours later…
yo'
11:35 AM
@egreg @DavidCarlisle you guys exploiting some people's code's lack of modularity? :-)

@yo' Quite so!
@yo' Some people defined some macros but forgot to use them.

yo'
@egreg when I need a (fictional) character's name next time (for a story or whatever), he will be Some People (maybe Sam People).
anyway, lunch time (finally). Bye!

11:58 AM
@egreg yay!
@egreg LOL

12:26 PM
@UlrikeFischer It's not due to the length of the filename being a multiple of 9. It is actually the hyphen, because something-else.tex also breaks. (the whole is 19, without ext is 15).

@HenriMenke I didn't doubt it (also as the code seems to change the catcode of the hyphen which makes it even more probable), but when I saw your question this old discussion directly popped into my mind as an example of an hypothese going wrong ...

12:43 PM
@DavidCarlisle I'm working on the LuaTeX business: I guess I need to look over this stuff again and (probably) remove everything that is for older LuaTeX releases (certainly want to see if I can par back to TL'16 or later only)

1:22 PM
@PauloCereda Also got mail from the staff :)

yo'
@egreg any 6-cube stickers coming in? :-) And congratulations of course!

@yo' We'll see

Hi guys! I was just checking the site for an abntex sort of tag and found there is a tag abntcite which is reference to a deprecated package and linked to only 1 question. When searching for "abntex" I get 19 results and for "abnt" 50. Shouldn't this tag be changed to either just abnt or abntex2 (which is the current maintained class)? I also do not know if this is the proper channel to discuss this, if it's not, I apologize, where do I go then?
I take particular interest in this as I'm Brazilian and as you may know from Paulo abnt is a pain in the ass struggle.

yo'
@GuilhermeZ.Santos Hi! you can ask here of course :-) Or, open a meta question about it.

@GuilhermeZ.Santos it is the correct place to discuss it (or meta) but here you might get silly suggestions such as changing it to

yo'
1:27 PM
Also note that to reach a certain person with your message, you need to place the @ in front of their name, like this: @PauloCereda, where are you when we need you?! (And don't say you're in SP, I know... :-) )

@DavidCarlisle Then I'd definetly prefer here!
@yo' In fact I didn't mean to reach him, but you're right, he's gonna have some Input on the matter.

yo'
For the tag question: I'm not sure. Obviously a tag is needed. I would personally be inclined to as the topic is small so a generic tag isn't a trouble, you don't need more specific tags

I thought about asking for a abntex2 tag but maybe a tag just for abnt would be better as it could wrap both class and package
@yo' Precisely my thoughts

yo'
@GuilhermeZ.Santos in general, it's better to give it some time on meta (i.e., propose the tag change there), but @JosephWright may consider this himself, his participance is useful in these cases as he's got the mod hammer.

@yo' Then all 50 questions that I found could immediately receive this tag (editing this old questions should not be done at all?)

yo'
1:33 PM
@GuilhermeZ.Santos in batches by at most ~15 so that they don't fill the whole front page

@yo' All right then. I'm opening a question on Meta, I'll soon post it here and flag Joseph's attention to it, Thank's!

yo'
@GuilhermeZ.Santos just post it here then, he'll notice :-)

1:53 PM
Playing a bit with using \detokenize to "show" the actual input to a macro, is there a way to get it so print non-ascii letters? \detokenize{Ørsted} (utf8) gives ßrsted as the output.

@yo' How do I make those big like-outdoors links for questions??

@daleif that is the utf8 so should appear as Ørsted if your terminal is using that encoding

I'm playing with a method of visualizing indexes by combining the visual pathing from the todo package, with \marginnote and using tikz to fix the overlapping issue with several margin notes on the same line. Works fairly well
@DavidCarlisle this was the output in the PDF

@GuilhermeZ.Santos just copy the link url as the only text
@daleif oh OK in that case you got what you asked for:-)

@DavidCarlisle grr, for what I was using it for (a book in English) it was just fine, but then we tried it on a book in Danish, not so fun
\documentclass[a4paper]{article}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}
\newcommand\test[1]{{\detokenize{#1}}\par}
\begin{document}
\test{hmm4@$hmm_4$}
\test{Ørsted}
\end{document}

1:57 PM
@daleif to pdftex Ø is two characters, the first one active with a definition that picks up the second one and typesets Ø, so if you detokenize then you kill the active definition so you just see two characters

Q: A tag for Brazillian TeXers (ABNT)

Guilherme Z. SantosSo, I am Brazillian and I've seen a few questions in TeX.SX regarding the two brazillian Standards (ABNT - Associção Brasileira de Normas Técnicas in english Brazillian Association for Technical Standards) related packages (abntex2 and abntex2cite). So I took the curiosity to see if there was a t...

@DavidCarlisle hmm, so I need a better strategy to show the actual typed in index command.

@DavidCarlisle Aha! Thanks...

@GuilhermeZ.Santos it works for a random collection of sites not just stackexchange (eg youtube videos, wikipedia, and some others)
@daleif possibly detokenize, so it's all catcode 12 then set catcode of \ to 12 so it stays that way then \scantokens (so the utf8 active chars are turned back on) (or simpler, write the book in English:-)

@DavidCarlisle sure, but if I want to release this as a package, I need to be able to show stuff in languages/encodings other than english/ascii
Though I could just keep it for my own projects....

2:04 PM
@daleif I assumed you'd ignore the last part of my comment! (the first part probably does what you need)

@DavidCarlisle I would expect so... And don't know why but I thought there was some magic trick involved into doing the big link. :P

@DavidCarlisle will that work when you want macros to print verbatimly, not be interpreted? Or am I missing something here?

@daleif that was the idea, yes (not that I tested it)

@DavidCarlisle I'll play with it tomorrow
thanks

2:41 PM
@GuilhermeZ.Santos VVVV
I sustain the proposal. So I'll know when to keep at large from a question. ;-)egreg 1 min ago

2:55 PM
@egreg Você só evitar essas perguntas que você não fala Português

@DavidCarlisle Meu Português é perfeito

@egreg it's probably as good as your tex

@DavidCarlisle So much better than yours. :P

3:30 PM
@egreg to dive the deep water of ABNT is for the stupid brave only my friend! ;P

3:41 PM
@GuilhermeZ.Santos LOL

3:52 PM
@DavidCarlisle Food plan resolved for UK-TUG meeting :)

@JosephWright good, I only come for the free lunch

@DavidCarlisle I always suspected as much
@DavidCarlisle We are going to escape for a bit this year :)

4:47 PM
Does anybody think we should undelete tex.stackexchange.com/a/333449/37907? It ansers the question quite fine, though a bit polishing would be good. On the other hand, the question would need a bit of attention as well.

5:14 PM
@Johannes_B The problem is in the question, which is nonsense

@egreg True that. I am not even sure if the OP meanwhile knwos whats going on. On the other hand, maybe he just wants to create a Toc and nothing else?

Hello again
I'm looking people who know metafont and woul like to help me creating minimal example of font

@egreg Frank

@DavidCarlisle Excuses

@egreg blame credit where it is due.
@MarkoLustro different from (say) cmr10.mf ?

5:23 PM
yes
conlangs
conlang= artificial alphabets please look at www.omniglot.com

@MarkoLustro I meant as an example (but I wouldn't use metafont for a new font now, the resulting fonts don't really fit well with any current rendering technology, unless you do what has been done with existing metafont fonts and convert them eventually to type 1.

can You .... cuting or deleting font for me? For example only 2 char and one ligature
and makefile to produce pdf

@MarkoLustro I just saw you had asked a question on the main site (I'm not sure that the question in that form has an answer)

How to edit the body of the letter? in moderncv template?

Yes, I create this question in main site
@DavidCarlisle can You look this ? github.com/mikolaj24/font
tell me how defining hight of font? How defining utf-8 char? for example utf-8 = 700
@DavidCarlisle Do You have github account?

5:35 PM
@MarkoLustro utf-8 doesn't have any relationship to metafont. what do you mean by utf-8=700? No sorry it's over 20 years since I played with metafont you'd need someone else, but as I say I think metafont would be a strange choice for a new font now.

when i use utf-8 in latex or tech is any table
table to convert utf8 char number to char in font (256)
my target font have tousand of ligatures and glyphs

@MarkoLustro I know what utf-8 is, but utf8=700 doesn't make sense, do you mean the unicode code point U+02BC (MODIFIER LETTER APOSTROPHE) ?
@MarkoLustro no. metafont fonts have at most 256 glyphs

yes
i need using my editor and normal utf8 codes in latex.

@MarkoLustro In a legacy font you can have at most 256 characters and each ligature counts for one. With TeX you can't have a ligature pointing to a different font.

Trouble is how defining this table and glyphs

5:39 PM
@MarkoLustro that is not utf-8 utf-8 is the way to encode unicode characters in the byte stream, so as a sequence of 1,2,3,4 or 5 bytes

ok, forget utf8

@MarkoLustro why do you want to use metafont

tell me: can You help me? My font is too complicated to create it in different system
i have many apostrophes, carons etc.

@MarkoLustro but metafont creates bitmap fonts that do not render well in all current rendering technologies and creates fonts with at most 256 characters which seem not what you want.

ok, what is Your proposition?
I have font similar hangul
many sound in one glyph
and ligatures for some chars
i have only tex and fontforge. fontforge is more complicated and I dont know how creating font from scratch

5:48 PM
@Johannes_B on the context list was a discussion about how to improve the documentation and the suggestion was (basically) to create a large site with lots of templates ;-)

@UlrikeFischer Templates as in minimal documents showing a special feature ready for testing out? I would be ok with that.

me waiting, for this templates

@Johannes_B templates as in "examples from whoever wants to show his/her (beautiful or not so beautiful) code/document"

@DavidCarlisle Did I just read free lunch? Where and when is this UK-TUG meeting??? ;P

6:00 PM
@UlrikeFischer Oh no :-(

This made me truly laugh out loud tex.stackexchange.com/questions/333349/… : "I suggest to take a 30 minute break, drink a coffee and come back. You are thinking in the completetly wrong direction. I am serious, take a break" (@Johannes_B)

@GuilhermeZ.Santos Sometimes you are stuck with an idea. You need to clear the head. I could have suggested a few other things ;-)

@GuilhermeZ.Santos oxford, next saturday, @PauloCereda is speaking

@Johannes_B Seriously, I'm seeing the whole comments on the question, it cannot be deleted! There's a bucket of fun in there... lol
@DavidCarlisle Sh**, I'll be in london not this next weeken but the next one... =(

6:31 PM
@egreg ooh a rubber duck
@DavidCarlisle
@JosephWright wooo
@DavidCarlisle I still need to record the video and send it to Joseph. :)
@David: I am pretty sure my talk will be very controversial. And crazy. And bonkers. And wacky. And boring.
Still, a good way to procrastinate instead of writing theses. :)

7:20 PM
Jan 12 at 12:15, by David Carlisle
@PauloCereda finished your thesis?

oh no

@PauloCereda oh so you are not doing it live via skype?

@DavidCarlisle Oh this time I will be available for questions, but I will try to record in advance. :)
@DavidCarlisle There's a lot of slides and the theme is difficult for me, so it's safer for me to either go to Oxford or record a video. :)

@PauloCereda or work on your thesis?

@DavidCarlisle Nah. :)

7:33 PM
@DavidCarlisle Hello, your help is needed tex.stackexchange.com/questions/333543/…

@touhami er Ok but first fix the example so that it has a chance of generating the stated required output (eg has the letters foo somewhere:-)
@touhami oh you always want foo, hang on...
@Manuel no need to delete you were first by a second or two anyway:-) (although the whole question is a bit odd @touhami :-)

7:50 PM
@DavidCarlisle \newpage{...} is particularly interesting
@DavidCarlisle The file contains “Supernatural Clue”, but the author of that code has none

@egreg I tried setting that to \relax and the catcode of & to 12 and wrapping the input in an outer picture environment, then you get no error but no visible output so I gave up
@touhami why do you want a \mthook macro?

8:24 PM
\documentclass{article}

\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}

\def\foo#1{%
\texttt{\fbox{%
\catcode"5C=12 %backslash
\catcode`$=12
\catcode`_=12
\catcode`^=12
\expandafter\scantokens\expandafter{\detokenize{#1}}}} makes #1\par}

\begin{document}

\foo{abc ABC}

\foo{Øäß $\sin\theta$}

\end{document}
@daleif ^^^^^^^^^^

@JosephWright I saw it. I will add it to the package.

@MartinSchröder hi!
@MartinScharrer and the luatex updates? :-)

@DavidCarlisle Yeah, I will work on these too ..

How does grouping work in a tabular? Is each cell in a group?

@DavidCarlisle you're the best thank you :-)

8:29 PM
@egreg ^^
@StrongBad yes
@MartinScharrer thanks

@MartinScharrer Hi Martin! Don't forget texdef! And don't listen to @DavidCarlisle

@DavidCarlisle while I am pretty sure that is useful, it is a real pain. Need to figure out a different way of writing my data table.

@egreg What was the issue with texdef again?

Looks like i cannot define a non global temporary variable that affects an entire row.

@MartinScharrer With a newer version of Perl, you're warned that a couple of braces in a regexp are not escaped.

8:31 PM
@egreg ah, ok

@MartinScharrer If you have a bit of patience, I can reproduce the warning

@StrongBad no but you can make it look that way look at \rowcolor or I think tabu has a \rowfont or blkarray has lots of weird stuff, you just need to set something globally and set it back at the end of the row

@DavidCarlisle I have macros \a, \b and \c and I want to redefine what they do on a row by row basis.

@MartinScharrer Here's the warning
Unescaped left brace in regex is deprecated, passed through in regex; marked by <-- HERE in m/^\\\@protected\@testopt { <-- HERE ?\\.*? }? *(\\\\.*?) / at /Library/TeX/texbin/texdef line 391.
Unescaped left brace in regex is deprecated, passed through in regex; marked by <-- HERE in m/^\\\@testopt { <-- HERE ?(\\.*?) }?/ at /Library/TeX/texbin/texdef line 394.
@MartinScharrer Just fix the two lines and you should be OK

@egreg thanks

8:34 PM
@StrongBad the hard part is if you want to supported nested tabular you then have to maintain your own private stack to restore global variables that may have been trashed by settings in a nested environment that you want to appear local.
@StrongBad in its simplest form you use \begin{tabular}{>{\global\let\a\relax\global\let\b\relax\global\let\c\relax}ccc‌c} then at start of each row they are \relax but if you do \gdef\b{xxx} in column 2 it will have that value in column 3. and be back to relax on the next row

@DavidCarlisle that is nice. I like how it resets each row.

@JosephWright XePersian is back. ;-)

@StrongBad there are issues eg if you do it like that but then use \multcolumn in the first column you over-write the template so the start of row settings don't take effect, you can drop the row resetting in at a lower level in the tabular setup , but then it's hard to be compatible with array/longtable/supertab/tabu/ and all the other tabular like packages

8:56 PM
@DavidCarlisle Hiho. What gives?

@MartinSchröder nothing much changes: same questions as ever, @egreg as rude to me as ever, @JosephWright arranges UKTUG meeting in a dungeon in trinity college as is traditional

@DavidCarlisle You rang :-)

@MartinSchröder that was just hello as your icon flew in:-)

1 hour later…
10:04 PM
@DavidCarlisle interesting, and here I thought one could not change catcodes inside macros

@daleif that's a loose interpretation of the truth:-)

1 hour later…
11:21 PM
some interesting history and such :)
