@Paulo well, I gave up
at least one good news: Someone put a bounty on my SO question

@tohecz :)

@PauloCereda and the notebook works well with the non-prop drivers ... anyways, GeForce is an overkill for me, but you can't realy configure a laptop

@tohecz :)

@PauloCereda I'm just waiting for the seller to reply to me and tell me how to legalize my legal windows, then I'll configure them properly
well, I go. Good night, @Paulo :)

12:47 AM
@tohecz Night, Tom! :)

12:57 AM
Oh just get a Mac. :D

Anyone know of a way to create shorter prime marks in math mode? In my current document with my other settings they're a bit too long for my taste, they're about the same size or larger than the lowercase letters they're superscripted on.

1:09 AM
Nevermind, the issue was created by using the mathastext package...it apparently doesn't play well with prime marks.

Q: "! Missing $ inserted." while including graphics

user2538819It's not my first tex document but this time I really cant figure it out: \graphicspath{ {./obrazki/wyniki_eksperymentu/Wyniki przegladu_EMG/wykresy/} } \begin{figure}[h!] \centering \includegraphics[width=10cm, height=10cm]{Najlepszych_30_kombinacji} % error here \caption{Najlepsze k...

Can anyone help me find a dupe for this question? I'm sure I've seen one, but I can't find it. OP has an underscore in the filename of the graphic.

Hi all, Added my name to the TUG memebership question.
@AlanMunn Hi Alan, I assumed that there will be some free slots.
Hope nobody minds. :-)

7:40 AM
@HarishKumar Why did you retract?

@StephanLehmke The rules :-)
Reasoning: last year I forgot about the deleting part, and that meant that the people who put their names down early were almost certain to get more votes

@JosephWright Ah Ok. Now I understand :-)

8:13 AM
@StephanLehmke :-)

Q: Latex Error: Cannot determine the size of graphic no bounding box

CyberBoy\includegraphics[width=1in]{space.jpg} This shows an error: Latex Error: Cannot determine the size of graphic no bounding box I am new to LaTeX, I learned and installed it in an hour. I need to submit the term paper written in LaTeX by tonight. A kind request, even if you feel like my effort...

I can't see a 'master' question in the 'often duplicated' meta thread

9:47 AM
Ah, Martin has found it!

@SeanAllred That shouldn't be a problem

@DavidCarlisle Hello

@DavidCarlisle Hello

Hello all!

@tohecz How's the Nvidia affair going?

@tohecz Hi Tom!

12:01 PM
@egreg back to nonprop driver
nowi'm on phone with the eshop considering the win8.1 product key, waiting for a technician of theirs

@egreg: Palmeiras brought Lúcio.

@PauloCereda The one who played for Inter?

@egreg Yes. I think Juve got him for a brief period of time too, then he was transferred to São Paulo. Then now he's in Palmeiras.

@PauloCereda Yes, he played also for Juve, but he wasn't among the memorable players. ;-)

@egreg Nope. :) I have no idea why Palmeiras got him. Anyway, this year Palmeiras reaches 100 years, so it's a special moment. :)

12:13 PM
@DavidCarlisle I think I've sussed out the driver business!

Q: I want to start using LaTeX on Ubuntu. Where do I start?

LipisThere are many different kind of options that you can do in order to start using LaTeX on Ubuntu. I would prefer doing that through Eclipse, but if there is a better way of doing it, feel free to write your opinion on why using this instead of something else.

I'd like to add an answer, but I'd start with "Get rid of Ubuntu first."

@JosephWright oh good, I'll get Rainer to reconfigure the latex-bug database to assign all graphics reports to you:-)

@DavidCarlisle Oh please no

@JosephWright think of it as a late Christmas present

12:17 PM
@DavidCarlisle I finally get (I think) how to make a dvips special equivalent to \pdfliteral. Still need to refine the dvipdfmx version, but the aim is to reduce the variation between drivers (which is not helped by the way they are documented).

@DavidCarlisle Give him a PS3 game, not a LaTeX report assignment. :)

@DavidCarlisle Thanks

@JosephWright yes documentation was always a problem, there was a lot of trial and error went into drivers.dtx

@DavidCarlisle Is there another way of writing code?!

@DavidCarlisle I can appreciate that!

12:19 PM
:)

@DavidCarlisle Not helped by comments like 'starts a block that works in the same way as ‘pdf:content’ except that all text between this command and ‘pdf:econtent’ will be placed in the right position'. Err, how?

@PauloCereda I always write a full spec using VDM, prove it correct then derive bug free code

@DavidCarlisle Oh my!

@JosephWright On page 182 of interface3.pdf, the description of the new functions (floor, ceil and trunc) has been mistyped, so only a [ appears instead of the names.

@egreg OK, I'll fix that over my lunch break :-)
Check-in once I've eaten!

12:23 PM
@JosephWright Not a big deal, of course.

1 hour later…
1:50 PM
@DavidCarlisle, @egreg, anyone else who might know: Does dvips do something odd with PostScript units? Looking at the code I ripped-off from pgf, I see that to get the clipping right you express things in inches (either directly or by doing a scaling by 72 from big points). All seems very odd.
The header is a bit long to read in its entirity

@JosephWright I thought it operated on big points.

@egreg Yes, that's the 'standard' but I have:
   /savedmatrix~matrix~currentmatrix~def~
   Resolution~72~div~VResolution~72~div~scale~
    0~
    \__dim_strip_bp:n { \box_dp:N #1 } ~
    \__dim_strip_bp:n { \box_wd:N #1 } ~
    \__dim_strip_bp:n { - \box_ht:N #1 - \box_dp:N #1 } ~
    rectclip~
    savedmatrix~setmatrix
and without the scale it fails
If I quickly 'knock up' \__dim_strip_in:n and use it, the scalings not needed
All very odd

@JosephWright Seems something like “dots per inch”.

I'd like to understand the code I've written :-)
Guess I'll have to read the header properly

2:07 PM
I'll try to get a proper MWE example together and ask on the site, I think

2:27 PM
@Joseph I don't know whether it's a feature request directly. I think it might be possible to do it without modifying TeXworks...

2:40 PM
@egreg I decided to ask a question :-) tex.stackexchange.com/questions/152270/…

J G
anybody good with fanychdr?

@JG sort-of, why?

J G
@tohecz i tried setting a footer in it, and i only got the footer to appear on certain pages. i didn't know if i was just doing something incorrectly or that's just how fancyhdr works pastebin.tlhiv.org/8EX1qE1a
in particular i'm having trouble with \fancypagestyle which i see is necessary for chapters

@JG you need to modify the plain pagestyle, too, which is used by default on \chapter and \part pages. Or you can simply add \makeatletter\let\ps@plain\ps@fancy\makeatother after all head/foot modifications

J G
@tohecz thanks! that got me the page number on page 3, however, it still didn't ge tme page 2 yet

2:51 PM
try adding \let\ps@empty\ps@fancy too
\makeatletter
\let\ps@plain\ps@fancy
\let\ps@empty\ps@fancy
\makeatother

J G
@tohecz thanks!
that seems to do the trick

@JG it should ;)
btw, both these are described in fancyhdr manual, one under Those Empty Pages and the other one with chapter pages somewhere too

I need to play more games. My gamerscore is very low. :(

J G
@tohecz yes i was reading page 7 in the manual but wasn't getting it together

@JG the \let construct is a dirty trick. IMHO \duplicatepagestyle should exist, which whould do exactly what I did...
@PauloCereda what games? Like Supaplex? (my fav after finally finishing The Lost Vikings couple days ago)

2:59 PM
@tohecz Lost Vikings was very good. :)

@PauloCereda I luv that gave. The most perfect graphics EVER :D

@tohecz :)

J G
@tohecz one problem i was having was when i had been using \frontmatter it seemed impossible to have any footer at that point

@JG you have to somehow check that you modify the right style. You can set any style with fancyhdr, there's a command for it somewhere

J G
@tohecz \thechapter gets me the chapter number; is there a way to get the chapter name instead?

3:11 PM
@JG \leftmark or \chaptermark should work

@DavidCarlisle: get Minecraft for the Xbox 360 so we can tag team.
:)

J G
@tohecz thanks \leftmark does the trick

@tohecz I'm reading the manual for KOMA-Script's new scrlayer concept and package (the package scrlayer-scrbase is the designated successor of scrpage2) for pagestyles (and more) right now. It has \DeclarePageStyleAlias{}{} amongst other things. Very interesting read...

@cgnieder well, I'm not a fan of KOMA-whatever :p (this is ceraintly not a quality issue, just personal taste)

@tohecz Well, to each his own :)

3:14 PM
@cgnieder yep :)

@tohecz I was amused of the conincidence with your idea of a `\duplicatepagestyle
@tohecz ... like all the other KOMA stuff the package is of course useable independent of a KOMA class... (but still in an experimental stage).

@cgnieder We do love experimental stages. :) By the way, you are in the arara beta testing program. :)

@cgnieder you know, very likely I would recommend KOMA to someone coming to LaTeX now and asking me for a good classes and packages that save a lot of time in the future. But I've been TeXing since I was 14, which is many years ago, when LaTeX2e had started to be used.

@PauloCereda Cool :) More experimental stuff!

@tohecz I'm trying KOMA for serious stuff these days and I wish I had found it earlier. :)
In other news, we are stuck with the interview series. We thought of jfbu, but no luck so far. Should I contact him by email?

3:22 PM
@PauloCereda maybe ;) Or find another victim ;)

@tohecz LOL I'll add this feature to Psmith: find potential interviewees. :)

@PauloCereda oh my. Psmith will soon be worse than the clean-lady at my department

@tohecz LOL

@PauloCereda Why not. His address is publicly available since he's active on c.t.t.

You no clean here, mr. Tomáš
@cgnieder Good plan. :)

3:24 PM
@tohecz pre script (KOMA-Script's original name I think), then :)

I might start the email just like Troy McClure: Hello, I'm Paulo. You might recognize me from wacky duck answers... :)

yum install extremetuxracer

@tohecz ooh!

^^ gotta test my graphics card ;)

J G
@tohecz do you know if it possible to reduce the fontsize of what's in the headers?

3:31 PM
@JG \small ?

@tohecz \makethisfontlookverysmallpleasepleasepleaseprettypleasewithsugarontoppleeeaseo‌oohapenny
:)
Do I have a limit of the macro name?

J G
@PauloCereda thanks hahhaha

@PauloCereda I dunno. 256 chars?

@tohecz I'll try. :)

J G
@tohecz thanks that works

3:35 PM
@tohecz it works!
Let me try with more

J G
Is it possible to do the following :

@tohecz: it works with 500!

J G
In LaTeX, I don't know apriori where a new page will begin
Is is possible for me to state, I want a new page to begin at a certain point in the event that two lines will be separated across pages?

@JG you can, I think it's \pagebreak but please don't do it.
better use \newpage

J G
@tohecz well what if i don't necessary want a \newpage? i only want the new page under the condition that the material would be split up
so maybe i did not phrase it cocrectly

3:49 PM
@JG \vbox{contents} ?

@PauloCereda Didn't he reply?

@TorbjørnT. As far as I can remember, nope. :(

Nov 15 '13 at 15:54, by jfbu
@JosephWright thanks, I feel honored by the proposal but I prefer not. I do enjoy the site and the community, I did enjoy reading (some time after the interviews took place) some interviews, I do spend quite some time on tex.stackexchange and got involved in writing two or three packages, but somehow I feel my relation with TeX to be too uncertain to merit being an interviewee and be up to it. Again thanks for the very nice proposal!

@TorbjørnT. Oh my, I totally missed that!!!!!!

Hello everyone! Happy New Year. :)

3:55 PM
@Alenanno Hi! To you too :)

@Alenanno Happy New Year! :)

I was wondering, do you guys know of some way to align content in a table using a custom symbol or character? I only found how to align using r@{ . }l in the tabular header, but that means faking a single column from two and I'd like a neater solution. :(
If you know of questions on the site, that's good too. I can't seem to find anything. :|

@TorbjørnT. Cool! Thanks, looking into it. :D

J G
@tohecz i coudl not figure out vbox but i figured out samepage with \begin{samepage} and \end{samepage}

4:06 PM
@JG yep, that should work, in typical cases

J G
@tohecz what might not be a typical case?

@JG I think that \url, \verb etc. wouldn't work inside, but I'm not sure

Next release of arara will feature a --karma mode which will analyze your code. You'll get what you deserve.

@PauloCereda TeX Nazi: those with bad code will be eliminated :D

@tohecz o.O
rm -rf / might suffice. :)

4:15 PM
@PauloCereda dd </dev/random >/dev/sda

@tohecz ooh eviler!

@PauloCereda much more evil, because the first thing it writes to is the partition table

@tohecz :P

J G
@tohecz thanks

@JG but as I say, I'm not 100% sure, it's just my guess that samepage uses \vbox internally

4:22 PM
@egreg, @DavidCarlisle You are off the hook: I worked out the dvips wierdness

@JosephWright That proves the point @DavidCarlisle made before: you are the right person to have all graphics reports assigned to. :)

@JosephWright I told you it was something like "dots per inch". ;-)

@egreg :-)
3 hours ago, by egreg
@JosephWright Seems something like “dots per inch”.

Spooky. :)

@egreg It's just odd that it's not mentioned and that it applies to everything, not just bitmap inclusion

4:32 PM
@JosephWright Undocumented feature. :)

Anyway, I can now document what is going on in the driver file
@PauloCereda I suppose so at this stage

@JosephWright Don't document it, let the next maintainer to suffer. :)

@egreg If you'd answered you'd have got the rep ;-)

@JosephWright Already capped, as usual. :P

@egreg 15 for the tick, though
Question + answer has taken me to over 200 for the day, but not yet to the rep cap as some of it is tick-related

4:35 PM
@JosephWright De minimis non curat praetor :)

@DavidCarlisle: get Terraria for M. :)

@tohecz no:-)

@egreg: is there a char limit for a macro name?

@PauloCereda I don't think so.

@PauloCereda \supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

4:42 PM
@PauloCereda Input stack or similar, I imagine
I see I attracted a second answer on the dvips question :-)

@JosephWright Buffer size, precisely.

@DavidCarlisle ok :)

@PauloCereda we built an xor gate....
@tohecz It just sets all the page break penalties to 10000 so page breaking is infinitely bad but will happen if no other choice, with a box it would never happen (but it is a lot harder to control the vertical space before and after)

@DavidCarlisle soooo clever :)

@DavidCarlisle :)
@David: get Terraria. :)

4:47 PM
@PauloCereda I think minecraft has a few hours left before need more:-)

@DavidCarlisle :)
Is M enjoying it so far? :)

@PauloCereda creator mode so can build stuff with infinite resources without having to fight off monsters (as far as I understand)

@DavidCarlisle Exactly, you are right. :)
Creative mode, actually. :)

Hey folks... input on something, if you will: I'm not sure I really agree with an edit just made to one of my answers. Is the part that was removed really inappropriate?

@PauloCereda The buffer size is 200000, usually, so there's a limit in what a line can contain. Here's a 180000 byte long name:
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{xparse}
\begin{document}
\ExplSyntaxOn
\cs_new:cpn { \prg_replicate:nn {180000}{a} } { long }

\use:c { \prg_replicate:nn {180000}{a} }

\end{document}

5:00 PM
@egreg OMG

You could try pushing to the limit.

@egreg Thank you!
@DavidZ Personally, I don't see any inappropriate. And I also share your thoughts on Eclipse. :)
I think you can rollback. :)

@DavidZ No, but I guess it might be more of a comment on the answer than part of the answer
@DavidZ I wouldn't have approved this edit, but as it has been ...

@PauloCereda With that code it can by as high as 199930

@egreg Awesome. :) I'll try.

5:04 PM
@JosephWright I suppose that's reasonable. But given that the last part of the question did invite considering the merits of Eclipse as a TeX editor, I think that first paragraph was not unwarranted.
Anyway thanks both for the feedback.

@DavidZ Ah, in that case I'd be very tempted to roll back
@DavidZ I see that the question does explicitly ask about this

@DavidZ I tend to put comments like that at the end, but sometimes also at the beginning.

@egreg Same here
Seen in the mod chat room: developer and model! stackoverflow.com/users/2274694/lyndsey-scott

@JosephWright Yes I'll marry her cool! :)

So far only one name in the TUG hat: come on everyone!

5:20 PM
@JosephWright yeah, and a very welcome name, at least in my opinion :)

@tohecz Certainly: I just want to make sure we have at least 8 candidates before the voting starts!

@JosephWright you should pin the post in the right panel here in chat :)

@tohecz Good plan!

@tohecz We very rarely use that power, but if you think so
14
Q: TUG Membership: Names for 2014

Joseph WrightStackExchange continues to support TUG with corporate membership (many thanks). With that come eight individual memberships that can be given out to members of the community. The time has come to select our representatives for 2014. For reference, Eight top voted members during last year TUG Memb...

8

@JosephWright it would be a second such post IIRC ;)

5:22 PM
@JosephWright Yes, yes... let the mod power be unleashed... bwawawawa

@tohecz Something like that
I guess I should specify what happens if there are 8 or fewer candidates by 5 pm on Tuesday: do we have a vote?
I'll wait to see if I need to worry

What would be the point of having a vote if it won't affect the outcome?

@DavidZ Votes will be useful if we have more than 8 names, I guess.

@JosephWright In that case, I would say, go through the top users list and offer it actively person-to-person

@DavidZ In principal there could be downvotes
@tohecz That's already in the rules: I just didn't specify if we wait until the voting is over

5:25 PM
@DavidZ People can theoretically add themselves until the voting ends, so it could happen that 10 minutes before the election closes, you suddently have 20 candidates ;)

@tohecz Yes, I'd thought of that too

@JosephWright just keep the voting on, whatever happens, that's the only fair way to go

Probably go with the vote irrespective of number of 'up front' nominees
@tohecz Yup, I suspect so
Anyway, we may well have more than 8 people by then anyway :-)

5:42 PM
@tohecz ah yes, I guess in that case it makes sense.
Anyway good luck filling those slots. I'll be off.

2 hours later…
7:55 PM
Happy new year all
I'm disappointed, I have a question up that I still don't have a good answer to...

8:24 PM
@Canageek Which one?
@Canageek Entering the TUG selection?

@JosephWright Putting a card back on every page; Just put a bounty on it to get it some attention
@JosephWright Sorry for the delay; I was kicked outside by the fire alarm

8:40 PM
Here's my new year resolution: I'll put a 10000 bounty to each of my questions.
8

@egreg How noble! Oh wait. :)

1 hour later…
10:09 PM
@PauloCereda I'd use it, but it doesn't seem to have MathML support.

Evening. Does anyone here use TeXnicle? If yes, can you configure it so that it uses Biber instead of BibTeX?

@HaroldCavendish Will take a quick look
@HaroldCavendish You can add new engines, so should be able to just add in biber

@JosephWright I tried that, but there is a problem with the number of runs. I mean, I could write a script that would do one cycle, but if I wanted to alter the cycle, such as use three runs instead of two, I would need to change the engine.

@DavidCarlisle I hadn't seen msxm10 for years!

@HaroldCavendish Well the engine scripts seem to be text files, so couldn't you just copy the pdflatex one and edit Biber in?

10:25 PM
@egreg I'm sure I'll get all those.

@JosephWright Are they accessible? The program does not allow me to look inside.
Oh, my bad. Sorry, of course they are. -_-
Great! I can just change the value of the bibtex variable to biber! Thanks! :-)

@HaroldCavendish No problem: I'd probably make a renamed copy of one as there is that 'these will be overwritten' warning

I have, thanks. Well, I might have a new favourite IDE.
Goodbye, gentlemen. :-)

10:51 PM
@DavidCarlisle I thought the same. :)
