@PauloCereda Cue some jive dancing

@JG Washing up
@JG A little, but if I need detail I ask AlexG

@NicolaTalbot :)

Office chair jiving

@JG Well, the first paragraph says that media9 requires Flash 10, which isn't available for Reader in Linux. However, that's not a limitation in Windows I guess, where the newest versions of Reader should be able to play videos from media9.

J G
@JosephWright I just don't understand what AlexG means. Is he syaing that Adobe 9.4 or below is what is needed?
@TorbjørnT. I use windows
@TorbjørnT. I don't use Linux

10:02 PM
@NicolaTalbot woohoo! :)

@PauloCereda Oh, the music's stopped. I'll have to go back to being sensible again.

@JG That's right: Adobe dropped support for Flash on Linux for (I think) security reasons

@JG Right, so that's not a problem for you.

@JG There is no totally general way to include media in a PDF

J G
@JosephWright So this is all for naught?
@JosephWright The code that AlexG posted compiles
@JosephWright I get a slide with a big black window. I try to click play and nothing happens.

10:04 PM
@JG Yes, it will do. My point is that people ask for a method which will work on (a) all platforms (Windows, Linux, Mac) and (b) with all viewers (Reader, Evince, ...).
Oh, and all versions of those viewers :-)

J G
@JosephWright Do you know much about media9?

@JG I've briefly looked at the code, but no detail

J G
@JosephWright Do you know how to implement it in the .pdf?

@JG You mean use the media inclusion?

J G
@JosephWright I guess. The code in: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/60160/…
@JosephWright Naturally I'm using a different video although I don't even what the video to show. I just wanted to include music in the background

10:08 PM
@JG For me, the code in AlexG's answer works

J G
@JosephWright As in it compiles or as in you know what to do with it in the .pdf?
@JosephWright The code compiles for me but I cannot play the video.
@JosephWright And frankly, is there a way to shrink it? And include it as a tiny button on the cover slide?

@JG That's one for AlexG, I'm afraid

J G
@JosephWright which part of it?

@JG Buttons, etc.

J G
@JosephWright How about just how to play it in the .pdf? Do you know that part? Just how to use it? I can get it to compile but it does not at all work in the .pdf

10:13 PM
@JG The method in the linked answer is for using with Linux: won't work (I think) with Reader X on Windows

J G
@JosephWright Oh, you mean it would have to be different code altogether?

@JG It's all about using the correct player

J G
@JosephWright What do you mean by that?
@JosephWright the .swf?

@JG Yes
@JG From what I understand, the player has to be right for the platform and version of Reader

J G
@JosephWright How do I know which one? The code says: {player_flv_maxi.swf}
Is there a list of players somewhere that I can experiment with?

10:15 PM
@JG That's for Linux and Reader 9.4, I think
@JG The media9 docs has a series of examples: I'd try them

J G
@JosephWright ctan.org/pkg/media9 ? Where is the document?

@JG texdoc media9 from the Command Prompt, or texdoc.net/pkg/media9

@JosephWright Great job on the UK TUG videos! Shame we couldn't see the speakers as well. That would've been fun, but I suspect not practical to implement.

@NicolaTalbot This year went for low-tech. I might look for a bit more advancement next year.

@JosephWright I really hope I can make it next year.
@JosephWright Forgot to ask. How did you get on with your boiler? Did it get fixed okay?

10:21 PM
@NicolaTalbot Yes, thanks. Was not as expensive as I feared.

@JosephWright That's lucky. I think I may be on campus next week or possibly the week after. Depends if I get side-tracked by other projects.

@NicolaTalbot I'm about :-)

J G
@JosephWright any hints?

@JG On what?

@JosephWright That's great. I'll bring some coffee with me :-)

Q: Reasonable Git repository for collaboration on a paper

Piotr MigdalI've just started using git for tracking changes in a LaTeX paper I'm writing, and for collaboration with co-authors. However, I cannot find easily private git repositories with reasonable plans for scientific collaboration (I'm not asking about discounts, just about a different workflow, so no...

Off topic?

@JosephWright I think it is.

J G
@JosephWright Are you saying that something has to go here: {\fbox{Play}}{APlayer.swf} ?

@JG That's my understanding, but as I said I'm no expert. I'd double-check with AlexG (he's quite responsive by e-mail, or on the main site)

@everybody who's wondering what's going on the with "Low answer quality score [-1]" flags (10k users), here's the bug report on meta.so: meta.stackoverflow.com/q/155471/162565

@doncherry Thanks

10:33 PM
I can't stay awake any longer. Night!

@NicolaTalbot Night

@NicolaTalbot Good night! :)

@doncherry My last answer flagged as "Low answer quality score [-1]"? I'm appalled! :)

@egreg Oh my!

And this one by lockstep! How can this be "low quality"?

A: Beamer: Different numbering for Theorems, Examples, Definition, and Lemma

@JosephWright I can't get the youtube examle in the document to work. It complies but nothing shows in th e.pdf

@egreg Looks like you'll have to do better than that! ;)

@egreg Well the answer on the meta post said something about ! operator, which would be negation. So it's probably flagging exceptionally good posts. Feel honoured!
On TeX.SX we only need that kind of flagging, of course.

@JG Exactly which viewer?

J G
@JosephWright huh?
@JosephWright I tried the progrma on page 14
@JosephWright I wanted to make sure that the problem was not with the file that I am using

@JG For example, 'Adobe Reader 10.0.0 on Windows XP'

J G
10:44 PM
@JosephWright So I thought to test a youtube one
@JosephWright Windows 2000 ?

@JG But which Reader version?

J G
@JosephWright I think just Adobe X.

@JG Check in the Help - About box

J G
@JosephWright 10.1.4
I tried this example:
\frame {
\includemedia[
width=0.6\linewidth, height=0.45\linewidth,
activate = pageopen,
flashvars={
modestbranding=1
&autohide=1
&showinfo=0
&rel=0
},
url
]
{}{http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLqRIowfmEY}
}

@JG The following 'works for me' with Reader 10.1.4 on Mac and Windows 7
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{media9}
\begin{document}
\includemedia[
  width=0.6\linewidth,height=0.45\linewidth,
  activate=pageopen,
  flashvars={
    modestbranding=1 % no YT logo in control bar
   &autohide=1       % controlbar autohide
   &showinfo=0 % no title and other info before start
   &rel=0 % no related videos after end
},
  url % Flash loaded from URL
]{}{youtube.com/v/Mdc3o7wOwNA?rel=0}
\end{document}
I get a load of security warnings on Windows, which I have to OK
Package: media9 2012/10/04 v0.15 acrobat-9/X compatible media

J G
10:53 PM
@JosephWright Ok it works for me too.
@JosephWright Now how can I go from that to if I were to have downloaded the video because I'm assuming no internet connection when I use the .pdf
I was trying this frame:
\frame
{
\includemedia[
width=\paperwidth,
height=0.7\linewidth,
activate=pageopen,
addresource=graphics/Paul_Whiteman_Whispering.m4v,
flashvars={source==graphics/Paul_Whiteman_Whispering.m4v&autoplay=1}
]
{}{player_flv_maxi.swf}
}

11:28 PM
@JosephWright You had AMAZING advice!! I changed the player and I got it to work! Also, I realized the code had a typo in it, and I fixed it by using the media9.pdf. That .pdf was actually kind of readable!! I was impresed. Alex is an amazing writer :)

11:40 PM
@DavidCarlisle: It wasn't me that down-voted the \hspace{-50pt} answer, I swear!! But, wasn't there a very similar answer a short time ago -- I recall it as I whined about you having such simple solutions, something that would never occur to me :-)
Also, before you ask, I am not the one removing users so as to get you to loose rep..

11:52 PM
@PeterGrill :-) I don;t really mind being downvoted that much (it doesn't even make any difference once you are past rep cap anyway) but it vaguely irritates to get downvoted when you don't know why:-)

@DavidCarlisle Yep, agreed. I think it must be a new user who anciently clicks on the down arrow.

@PeterGrill I tried to give you a help earlier today but the OP insisted on giving me 15 anyway:-) tex.stackexchange.com/questions/81990/teuthonista-diacritics/… (see the comments on the other answer:-)
