7:00 PM
@PauloCereda or my new tikz version!

@DavidCarlisle Oh true! :) I'll use for this year's seasons greetings video! :)

Thanks everyone. It was that \pgfmath problem. I've turned it around.

Guys, I have a talk tonight about TeX and friends for CS freshmen. I don't think it will end up well. :P

@PauloCereda Good luck!

@PauloCereda In case of confusion, switch to pie charts.

7:04 PM
@percusse or ducks

@DavidCarlisle Menu of the day : ostridge egg and duck pie

@NicolaTalbot Thanks. :) One of my slides has "LaTeX isn't for everybody, but it can be for you." :)

@percusse, @DavidCarlisle: LOL

@PauloCereda Start with the favourite sentence: TeX is Turing-complete: Did you know that?

@tohecz LOL great idea!

Q: Kerning on the fly

TimoDo anyone know any algorithm which would calculate automatically kerning of characters based on glyph shapes when user types text? I don't mean trivial calculation of advance widths or similar, I mean analyzing the shape of glyphs to estimate the visually optimal distance between characters. For...

Öhem.... TeX anyone?

7:16 PM
@percusse I see less and less usage for something like that with good opentype fonts

@topskip I really want to understand how one designs a font... It looks like a complete operating system
so many weird details with obscure formats and other details. I've spent 5 hours the other day to make one font recognized by TeX in the correct folder. I don't remember how many folders I had to reposition ...
It was a mess so I had all the files in one folder and copied to everywhere until TeX finds it :)

@percusse once you know where to place fonts, its easy. And of course, there is LuaTeX and XeTeX
...but I agree, it's a mess with TeX

7:39 PM
@PauloCereda: I tried the installation of keepassx. It failed but I don't know why. Whatever do you know an alternative?

@MarcoDaniel KeePassX. :)

@PauloCereda :-) My biggest problem with giving a LaTeX talk is that I have a minor speech impediment when it comes to words beginning with 'b'. The worst attack was when I was once describing the tabular environment and had to keep saying "backslash backslash".

@PauloCereda Does it work for you. I have 10.8.2

@MarcoDaniel: did you get the .dmg file, mounted and dragged it to the Applications?
@MarcoDaniel Yep. :)

@PauloCereda I downloaded the dmg file and just a simple double klick.

7:41 PM
@NicolaTalbot :) I have problems mixing Portuguese and English, so the final result is a disaster. :)
@MarcoDaniel Did you copy KeePassX to the Applications?

@PauloCereda I got no extra window. Normally I don't copy a dmg file to Applications

@MarcoDaniel Double click the DMG. The drive will appear in your desktop. Enter in it, then drag the application to the Applications folder. :)

@PauloCereda This fails this time. I will download the file again and will try it

@PauloCereda I'm always mega-impressed by people who are fluent in more than one language. My mother was brought up trilingual (her mother was Belgian) but although she tried to teach me, I never mastered either French or Portuguese.
(Not fluently, anyway.)

@NicolaTalbot Cool! :) I only know Portuguese. My English is terrible, I know just a little. :)

7:51 PM
@PauloCereda Don't speak about that. You're not Czech speaking English with everybody, and staying in Paris

@tohecz Sacred bleu. :P
^^ is this right?
@MarcoDaniel: any updates? :)

@PauloCereda samo course

@PauloCereda Could've fooled me :-)

@NicolaTalbot Not at all. :) Take a look at my talk at the UK-TUG meeting. :P

@NicolaTalbot He has so cutely low self-esteem ;)

7:55 PM
@PauloCereda That reminds me, I haven't finished watching them yet.

@tohecz <3
@NicolaTalbot :)

@PauloCereda Yes. After mounting no extra icon or window was opened. Only on the left bar the mounted device was displayed. First time I didn't see it.

Who's got some pull to encourage @HeikoOberdiek to use the voting tools more frequently?

8:13 PM
@Werner I think he is doing as much as he can. It's hard to get impressed if you are Heiko :)

@percusse Sad, but true.

@Werner I would say: "This site is better with non-voting Heiko, as well as it's better with lowercase-writing barbara."

9:17 PM
@PauloCereda That's a really bad example if you are trying to show people how bad your English is. Your spoken English on that recording is really rather good.
@Werner I don't vote that much either, I usually only think of voting if someone gives a better (or different) answer to a question I've answered (and I never think of voting for questions until the system tells me off for not voting)

@DavidCarlisle Does the system tell you something if you don't vote on questions?
Regardless, I know everyone has their motivations for voting. Some are trigger-happy, and that's good.
Some are more reluctant to vote, and that's their prerogative as well.

@Werner yes it gets very cross and sticks a big banner across the screen every time you try to vote for an answer, saying not to forget to vote for questions.

@DavidCarlisle Interesting...
Someone once mentioned that putting in the effort to answer a question should most certainly encourage the answerer to vote on the question...
...newcomers like Heiko might just not care about voting that much, and that's something that is encouraged here - good or bad!
Who knows, one day you'll have had enough of the banner, and either throw your computer out the window (when it's open, of course), or click the upvote on the question to shut "the system" up.

@Werner yes well I don't really do it for the votes either (except at the moment I need all the votes I can get to get past @PeterGrill again:-)
I suppose voting for questions that I answer might make some kind of sense and not take up too much thought on a decision process evaluating the questions....
something for you apple fans?

@DavidCarlisle Yes, I know it's hard to both read a question and decide on its vote-worthy-ness.
@DavidCarlisle Jostling the leader board can keep one up late at night.

9:36 PM
oops speak of the devil

@DavidCarlisle Hey, how'd you know I was coming? :-)
@DavidCarlisle Well I don't do it for the votes either, but I do it for the badges, but need the votes to get the badges!!

@DavidCarlisle "LaTeX is document markup system (similar to the popular Markdown)". Appalling. :)

@egreg In the context it's not actually that wrong as (as far as I can tell) it's using latex syntax as a linear markup syntax for converting to mathml just as markdown is converted to html. It's not actually using latex the engine (I think)

@DavidCarlisle I guess it isn't, or a TeX distribution should be included.

@PeterGrill well now I've started using tikz I should soon get lots of badges I think.

9:43 PM
@DavidCarlisle Oh no!! I hope you are joking as I am really dreading creating a \picturemark macro??

10 hours ago, by David Carlisle
@PauloCereda I don't really think xii is suitable for those questions

@DavidCarlisle Wow, that is impressive!! You need to post that in How can we draw a Christmas tree with decorations, using TikZ?.
Perhaps after hiding a few of the words that tell that you are using tikz in disguise.

@PeterGrill well that;s were it came from of course before I stuck a few extre # in

@DavidCarlisle Once you are done with the clean up, you should call it yii.tex and post it!

9:56 PM
@DavidCarlisle I will use xii for tomorrow's talk. :)

@Gnintendo Mathematicians always beat engineers in the end.
@DavidCarlisle Oh please come to our lab :)
I'll show you easily the winner hehehe....
falls for the bait...

1 hour later…
11:15 PM
Please have a look to this question. Is it off topic or too localized? Do we support OOoLaTeX? I can't.

Q: Equation gets cropped when using .emf in OOoLatex

mp19uyI am using LibreOffice with the plugin OOoLatex 4.0 under Windows 7 x64. When I generate equations in PNG format (the images) I have no problem. What happens is that if I select EMF instead, when I generate the equation, it gets cropped, I mean, you don't see the entire equation but only a part. ...

@Kurt I guess it depends whether LaTeX crops something or the converting of its result …
@Kurt But he could put a link to the OOoLaTeX files so that one can install it for himself …

Should genus names by themselves be italicized?

(Yes, I can google it myself, but come on!)

11:54 PM
@Qrrbrbirlbel Thanks for writing a comment.
