Also, if a full-length campaign proves difficult to schedule, there are plenty of games designed to provide a satisfying story arc in a smaller number of sessions.

This here, for instance, is one reason why it's annoying that the Trilogy sites have their own chat server, distinct from the rest of the SE sites.
Because I suddenly find all the people from my C# chat tab in my RPG.SE chat tab. :)

This room is relevant to my interests. I may loiter.

Folks in the RPG General Chat will be happy to help with tools, systems, techniques, whatever.

is it going to be purely by keyboard?
i mean, the GM is going to have a hard time

probably not
I'm guessing audio, with video optional

i see, let me know when you guys get some plan out.
didn't play tabletop for like 4-5 years

While I've had good success with text-only games myself (SE chat + shared GDoc), the person who's volunteered to GM here would like audio/visual and is considering Roll20 for the job.

who's gm? amy?
ah yeah, amy
we got a pony GM

Well, you can rest assured that it's difficult to run I'm a Pretty Princess online.

I'm making a simple, short survey to figure out what kind of experience everyone has. Suggested questions?

@Amy "How much experience do you have?"

"do you hate 6 rogues party?"

4:21 PM
@Amy Maybe counts for campaigns started, campaigns finished, longest campaign, editions/games played, etc?

Amy
4:35 PM
ok thx

Do these questions include all tabletop rp or just the one we're playing?
and also, how do you count the length of a campaign? by session hours or by time passed in the real world?

Amy
session hours and the number of sessions
They're mostly tabletop RPG specific, but one question is about RPG experience in general. Even if you've never done tabletop, video game RPGs can provide some meaningful roleplaying experience
i.e. you know what a bard is, what a ranger is, etc.
I don't like having players who have never tabletop gamed, but if they're willing to commit to a few games, i'm okay if they decide to drop out after that. its not for everyone.
hopefully everyone has some experience

So it sounds like based on previous posts in here that we might not use VTT and just rough it?

Amy
VTT?
voice chat?

virtual tabletop

someone mentioned Roll20 yesterday, i meant to look into it last night. on the surface it looks like exactly what we need

Yeah it looks really cool
it looks like it might be free, but I'm willing to pay a reasonable price for it if that is just a trial kind of thing. On the surface it looks very useful and immersive

I didn't see anything that indicates it's not free

Amy
same

I'm super pumped for this. Bring it on!
Should I get ready by rolling up a character tonight?

Amy
not yet, but you can if you want
we don't technically have a group yet
just a handful of prospective players

4:52 PM
Ok, I'll hold off until things look a little more solid. Hopefully this all materializes smoothly though it sounds like a lot of fun
I might be able to bring some friends in too.
