9:03 AM
@Edlothiad Haha love this every time I see it though can't really use it for compiling anymore. I use it for when I'm running a test now though
Oh and Ed I've overtaken you again

I like how The Restaurant at the End of the Universe made a feedbot with xkcd comics every day

JAD
@Kepotx that's impressive, seeing as XKCD comics aren't daily

Brutal

9:32 AM
@TheLethalCarrot You'd overtaken me before I left on friday.

Oh go me :P
Can we call this a dupe or not? I suspect closing it would lead to a close/reopen battle

Again, all we have to do is look at the number of answers the two of us have ;)

It is in my interpretations of the rules.

I'll VTC it when it comes into the queue then

9:36 AM
@Kepotx It's the XKCD RSS feed, there's a number of chat rooms (into the double digits) with the feed.

Quidditch Q with games tag? Not needed right?

Nope
Might just nuke the whole tag

Thought so was just double checking before I rejected it

If you click reject, you can see if anyone else has already rejected it

I realised after you replied haha
Been a while since I've been in the SE queue properly cos we get so few here

9:44 AM
@TheLethalCarrot We get quite a few, you're just too slow ;)

Oh well then haha

Sundays are surprisingly active...

Are they? I wasn't around at all this weekend

Sundays surprise me every week
I sit there hungover reviewing all day

Haha
I was going to play some RE4 this weekend but forgot how poor the controls are for it on PC

9:57 AM
RE?
Resident Evil?

Yeah
I used to play it all the time on console and I can tell it's optimised for controllers
The movement has that annoying "left" just turns the character left and doesn't strafe and moving the mouse doesn't turn the character

Can you not just plug a controller into your computer?

If I had one probably, Though I can't use a controller anymore haha
I used one a couple of months after I went to PC and stopped going on my console and you know when you see an older person using a controller and they turn, stop, then aim. I was like that haha
White Widow has changed name again

10:26 AM
This is back to his monthly change.

Their profile picture is of "SEX" magazine :facepalm:

Better than the last one though haha

Better, but there's a running theme..

I know

10:31 AM
300 rep behind again, need some questions over here...

Aye, it helped that I answered a story ID Q on Friday
Try and answer this one, I had a quick look but am stumped really

I don't know transformers, shrug

Me neither, at least I barely know much about it, I mainly did some googling haha

JAD
Imma guess Tankobot
Hmm googling autobot tank results in Hardhead, which has some resemblance I guess. Also tires on the arms:
but honestly, they all look the same to me

Yeah they're all similar

JAD
10:43 AM
also, googling decepticon tank also has a result, but it didn't really look similar

I've found like 5/6 that look like possible candidates but don't quite match

2 hours later…
1:00 PM
Do we have a policy regarding "Honourable mentions" on Id Qs? I've seen a few recently where an answer was already accepted and someone came along and said" although this isn't it it matches mostly..."

Downvote
Leave angry comment
If it's an issue, meta.

Just that the ones I've seen recently all seem positively received
Or are at least "cashing in" on the more popular Ids to ride the train to rep town

JAD
@TheLethalCarrot hmm, that sounds like a pretty good idea

Make a meta, make it ok to delete, have fun!

Haha, I'll have a look for a few examples

JAD
shame :ding ding:

On that note then it's likely fine to do so

No make a meta, it's not fine to do.
Adding wrong answers is just noise.

I know I'm just saying as it dstands

It's not anything right now. People have probably noticed and are just hopping on rep/badge trains.

1:08 PM
That's one of the ones I was looking for again
There's the one from the mouse detective Q too

Yep

yes but "technical inaccuracies are not a reason for deletion" or so I have been told many times in rejected flags

There's one thing doing it when you don't know if it's wrong
It's a whole other thing doing something that you know is wrong

Yep ^

many times i flag stuff that is short 1 sentence stuff that has come after a canon answer and it gets rejected
timing of answer doesn't matter

1:10 PM
Adding objectively wrong answers should not be left
@Skooba Putting "I'm aware you've found the answer, but this book also sound similar" is different to some guy coming along hitting the answer button and then just typing away some random mumbo jumbo

I'm going to word the meta so it looks like I don't have an opinion on it so I don't get accused of trying to sway the discussion again

@TheLethalCarrot When did that happen?

The auto flagging one

God I love that meta.

Even though I got accused of apparently trying to sway it so we don't get auto flagging but I actually wanted it...
So it didn't make any sense

1:12 PM
What, I'd say you'd swayed it to get auto-flagging

Exactly, I don't know
I tried to make it neutral though

JAD
objectively wrong answers should be downvoted ideally
but as it stands, not even that is happening

Nope
I think your new meta that you're writing will just be back duped to this one:
17
Q: What can be done to **effectively** combat 100% wrong answers that generate more upvotes than correct answers?

DVK-on-Ahch-ToFor example, here: Do (weaponized) lasers exist in the Star Wars universe? @Zato posted a what-seemed-at-the-moment-correct answer, which generated tons of upvotes (10) stating "no such examples exist" - he did the research, but the only actual reference he had was Wikia (lack of references is ...

or this:
19
Q: Is deleting really wrong answers OK according to the rules?

DVK-on-Ahch-ToThere are some answers on this site that are just plain out 100% wrong (explained why wrong in the comments, and usually downvoted). We can't flag them for moderators to delete (that usually gets declined), since the answer is simply wrong and not spam/etc... leaving aside other consideration, ...

I think that's enough examples

The last one is effectively the Q and it means don't do it

Yep, needs upvotes to be more consensus-y, so get your votes in lads
The second to last suggest they're fine.

JAD
1:20 PM
hmm, I dislike answers getting accepted on policy questions

The second to last though is coming from the angle that an answer has not yet been accepted

@JAD Yep
@TheLethalCarrot True, and is specific not general.

It might be worth making a new meta now but I can't be bothered right now haha

It'll be back duped, the one that exists is fine. If people want to vote on it, find it.

Meh, whatever happens people are still gonna add the honourable mention answers anyway

1:28 PM
And I'm going to delete them citing the policy!

Haha fair enoguh

JAD
honestly, you could point out that there are two threads that appear contradictory. Focus the discussion of both into one, dupe the other(s)

Could, too lazy too now though

1:51 PM
People need to stop with the pointless tags today, it's getting on my nerves

2:11 PM
What now?

People opening story id questions, seeing random key words, typing them in the tags box and if they come up selecting them...

Ah I get ya

@Edlothiad let someone else get some review in then

@Skooba I let you get the review.
If I would've approved it you wouldn't have gotten it, but I rejected it. You're welcome.

@Edlothiad and here i thought i had a miracle happen

2:18 PM
#NotAllHeroesWearCapes
:O 4,999 Reviews
Someone suggest an edit to something!

Total reviews right?

Ye
My highest single queue is ~2700 something, first posts.

Nice one
How d'ya see total review stats?

Profile, Activity, All actions, Reviews
https://scifi.stackexchange.com/users/*UserID*/*username*?tab=activity&sort=rev‌iews

Ah that way, I wish there was some better way to see your stats. And some meaningful stats at that like times people agreed with you etc.

2:23 PM
What kinds of stats?
If you hover over you picture in the review list you get some breakdown
Otherwise the per review stats

That page is shite, it's called stats but there's literally only 2, total reviews alltime/today

Yep, stats for reviews in general are shit, they should put me in charge of it

2:48 PM
And 5k reviews, it's a first post

Ahah!

JAD
3:10 PM
so many identification questions :X

1 hour later…
4:32 PM
Why you no answer? :(
On a different note this is just brilliant
If you guys like DailyWTF, I've just found this code in a project of ours
	if (File.Exists(strSrcImageFilePathFront))
	{
		if (File.Exists(strSrcImageFilePathRear))
		{
		}
		else
			log.Error(string.Format("Unable to find the Rear Image[{0}].", strSrcImageFilePathRear));
	}

	else
	{
		log.Error(string.Format("Unable to find the Front Image[{0}].", strSrcImageFilePathFront));

		if (File.Exists(strSrcImageFilePathRear))
		{
		}

		else
			log.Error(string.Format("Unable to find the Rear Image[{0}].", strSrcImageFilePathRear));
	}

JAD
uuuuh

(Ignore the indenting, pasting it seems to have borked it)

JAD
that doesn't need to be nested

I just changed it too
        if (!File.Exists(strSrcImageFilePathFront))
        {
            log.Error(string.Format("Unable to find the Front Image[{0}].", strSrcImageFilePathFront));
        }
        if (!File.Exists(strSrcImageFilePathRear))
        {
            log.Error(string.Format("Unable to find the Rear Image[{0}].", strSrcImageFilePathRear));
        }

JAD
exactly

4:44 PM
Which makes about 1000000000000000000000000% more sense

wtf?

I know right, it actually took more effort to write it like that too

JAD
also, eew at having the type in the variable name

I know, I'd change it but I'd only get moaned at if my boss saw I did so in the commit

JAD
feared as much

4:46 PM

It also doesn't make sense that source has been shortened to src but then the rest is ImageFilePathFront when it could easily be frontImagePath or something

never seen an if followed by empty brackets in my entire life...

I've seen it a few times in our legacy projects, none of which have ever made sense

JAD
oh, there was a question about that on software developers SE a while back

It wasn't that long ago

4:49 PM
i dont see any case where it could make sense. if you use only the else part, use !

JAD
otoh, compiler quickly gets rid of it, so I don't think it's the biggest sin
you can do a lot worse

Oh of course but it does make it unnecessarily more difficult to read

JAD
well yeah, of course
but still, the nesting is a bigger issue in that department
the empty if is just icing on the cake :D

Oh I know

useless nesting AND duplication

4:53 PM
I like that it checks if the rear image exists in two places depending on if the front image exists or not even though they are completely unrelated to each other
What's better is it then processes the images regardless of if they exist or not too

JAD
I wonder what's better. Checking beforehand, or just trying to read the file and catch the filenotfound exception?

Oh it catches the error too

JAD
:|

Though checking yourself is better, catching the exception is slower

JAD
just incase between the two pieces of code the file was removed

4:56 PM
Even better is it catches the error and only logs it but doesn't report it to the user

JAD
I guess that depends on what the code is supposed to do
if it can't function without the file, not reporting to the user would be weird

Well it's supposed to show the image to the user but if it fails it fails silently to them

JAD
and it doesn't show anything?

so he have no feedback ? he dosn't now if theimage is still loading or have failed?

JAD
^

4:58 PM
Well instead of using our own viewer (which is actually the change I'm doing) at the moment it calls a Process.Start on the file so it'll open in Windows Photo Viewer or whatever the default it so that might error I'm not sure
Basically no
I'm essentially re-writing the whole method
What's annoying though is this is an app that I'm 99% sure the user is never going to use

JAD
:(

that's lame
is it a POC or something like this?
i mean, is it intentional to not be used?

Well we upgraded a system for a new customer but they wanted to still be able to see all the old data from the system that did their work before so this app is for them to view that old data. I just can't see them wanting to view the old data though

JAD
so is it a commandline tool? or a UI?

5:06 PM
so basically, upgrading a tool that will disapear soon. great.

Well they'll always have it but likely never use it

JAD
hmm, so how do you get the filepath?

They need it "just in case"

and can't the new system use old data?

JAD
does the user type it in, or in a file select dialog?

5:07 PM
Some convoluted way of building it up, I'm not touching that though I'll likely break something haha

JAD
fair enough
was wondering if you use the file window, whether validation was really necessary anymore

@Kepotx They didn't want the new and old data mixing together and to be honest looking at the way the old system (not by our company) stored the data I'm fine with that haha
@JAD Ah right yeah we build the path from a few variables like doc Id and what not

JAD
yeah nevermind

Though again that's done blindly with some straight parsing which could error which isn't in the try catch

JAD
if it were a simple file select thing, you might be able to remove it, but you still would want to check if anything was entered, so if you're at it, why not check it completely.
but yeah, bettersafe than sorry

5:11 PM
Oh I know, I'm changing as little as possible though, I only changed those if statements cos they made no sense haha

JAD
I wonder if VS would suggest such a refactor
doubt it, since evaluating the if statement might have side-effects
(as ugly as that may be)

Yeah if you have a method call in the if it could change how it worked
I doubt it suggests it and I don't think it did (2015)

2 hours later…
JAD
7:27 PM
@TheLethalCarrot eh, you can do nasty stuff without an explicit method call as well
bool notJustABool => {sideEffects(); return true;}
