Anyone know what the "do not pass" symbol when loading the OSX install USB means?

6:19 PM
@Luke is that the Apple-provided thumb drive to install Lion?

Nope, one I made from a 10.6.8 DVD

@Luke AFAIR it means generically you can't boot that hardware from that medium
What's the hardware and what was its OS when new?

10.6.8 on the USB and the system... I don't know the original

What's the hardware? AFAIR not all Snow Leopard-compatible Macs are compatible with the generic Snow Leopard DVD.
Afterthought: 10.6.8 may be a hardware-specific DVD.

It was made from a retail CD

6:35 PM
More likely 10.6.3 then.

You're right
Anyways, when I get in to OSX (when booted normally), up comes Application Crashed messages from Finder
I'm not understanding the error that is coming up... But I'm wondering now, is there a Mac version of Windows' sfc command?

@Luke so you wish to reinstall the OS?
@Luke what's sfc?

SFC is the System File Checker, verifies the files with the installation CD to make sure all the Windows files are OK. I'd like if I could do an Archive and Install, but the install tells me I can't install to that volume. It's a customer's machine, not mine

@Luke nothing equivalent to SFC. Any reason to not use the DVD?
And what's the hardware? The model identifier is most useful. Apple menu > About This Mac > More Info …
Here for example, MacBookPro5,2

6:53 PM
iMac 10,1. Can't use the DVD cause I don't have it anymore

7:06 PM
You'll need either the retail DVD or the DVD that came with the iMac. You can probably still buy the retail DVD for cases such as this …

A: How can I download Snow Leopard?

Mr. MelApple still sells Snow Leopard via Phone Sales. Call the number at the top left of the screen at store.apple.com/uk and you can purchase a DVD copy of Snow Leopard.

For that class of iMac, which can take up to 16 GB memory, it's probably easier and cheaper to get Mountain Lion.
@Luke How much memory in that iMac?

7:25 PM
4GB

7:52 PM
@GrahamPerrin pastebin.com/HfJH9gHH is the error showing

Per-App Crashes Since Last Report: 319929
ouch!

Q: Finder crashes constantly

LukeOn an iMac 10,1 system running OSX 10.6.8, Finder is crashing on every startup, including in Safe Mode. I have the error message posted, but it seems very cryptic. As per a conversation in the Root Access chatroom, the file /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Backup.framework/Versions/A/Backup does...
